My brother shared this recipe with me back in 2009, many years ago when I first started this blog. This makes enough for leftovers, which taste even better the next day. You can prepare this the night before and turn it on in the morning, leftovers freeze great too.

And since so many people ask what slow cooker I have, it’s the 6 Quart Hamilton Beach Set ‘n Forget Programmable Slow Cooker. I love it because you can adjust the time you want it to cook, and it automatically turns to warm when it’s done. It also has a probe for meat that automatically shuts off when done. I love it so much, I own three! I also love my Instant Pot, which is great when you want a meal quick. Whichever way you decide to cook it, it will be great!

Can I cook this on the stove? My crockpot/instant pot cooker died.
I’m sure I can cook this on the stove. I just want to make sure of the time for cooking.

  2. This is the best, most delicious turkey chili recipe, and so easy to prepare in our Insta Pot! We serve it with toppings and cornbread. Our absolute fall/winter favorite! Thank you, Gina, for another great recipe!

  3. I have been making this Chili for a couple years now… it’s so easy and delicious! My family favorite! I add a can of refried beans to make it less “soupy”.
    Just a personal preference.

  4. This is my favorite chili recipe. I’ve made is many times and usually use whatever beans I have on hand. I’ve also added diced red pepper to it.

  5. What a fabulous chili recipe! I followed the recipe as written and it is just the best! Perfect for a cold (for Florida!) night. Gina, thanks for another great recipe!

  6. It’s cooking now. Easy to make. Can’t wait to try it.
Question, I’m using crock pot method, since browning meat before adding to pot, everything is really already cooked. Why does it have to stay in the crock pot so long?

  7. I wasn’t sure I wanted all those beans but I try to do what the recipe says the first time if I can. Glad I did.
Added about 1/3 tsp salt and went a smidge heavy on the spices. Delicious and so easy.

  8. I have this chili recipe saved from 2012 and I make it multiple times a year (fall/winter)- it’s my absolute favorite and such a staple!

  9. Just made this as a meal prep recipe. Added extra cumin (because I love it) and some garlic powder, and it is delicious! So simple!

  10. This was so good! The only change I made was using ground chicken since I’m not a fan of ground turkey. As expected, it tasted even better the next day. This will definitely be added to my rotation!

  11. Just made this exactly like the recipe and it was delicious! Topped it with Mexican cheese and sour cream, yum!

  12. Made this tonight for a quick, last minute pantry dinner. It was delish! I used what I had one hand, kidney, garbanzos and red beans. Had no tom sauce so I did a one to one ratio of tom paste to water. Had no diced toms so I smashed a box of cherry tomatoes I had in the fridge. Added 4 calabrian chilis for a little kick since I had no diced chilis on hand and added minced garlic because I love garlic with everything. It was delicious. Allll my boys from 22 to 5 years old loved it. Thanks for the healthy & delicious recipes. XO

  13. I made this tonight exactly as the recipe stated and my family LOVED it. We topped it with a little sharp cheddar and avocado. Thanks, Gina!

  14. This is the best chili. I made it just as written, but I did add 1/2 tsp of salt. My husband and I both really enjoyed it.

  15. I followed the recipe exactly, but kept getting the burned food message on my instant pot. Any suggestions?

  16. This is my favorite chili recipe! Must admit I’ve been messing with it over the past couple of years. This week I added 1 small can of diced jalapeños, 1 sm can green chilis, 1 can of rotel diced tomatoes with chilis, and 1 tbs extra chili powder.  It had a nice bite to it , but not too spicy 🌶 I use an IP.

Hi Gina, You do an amazing job of creating tasty and clear recipes. I am making the turkey chili and would appreciate a photo of the chili finished up in the pot and ready to serve but not garnished for reference when I am making it. I am cooking my first batch on the stovetop. Thanks!

  18. I’ve made this twice now, used the IP both times. Added garlic, extra cumin and used different beans. Really good simple recipe.

  19. For the diced tomatoes, buy the kind with the chilies already in it (like Rotel) and do not drain. Gives it a bit more liquid and one less can you need to open!

  20. As a new instant pot user this was one of the first recipes I tried.  So easy, my family loved it and it’s been a staple since.  Hard to come by recipes that taste o good and are so WW friendly.  Thanks so much!

Awesome chili! I didn’t have time to slow cook it, so I just put it together on the stove top, let it cook for 20-30 minutes. Fabulous taste and so easy!

  22. Hi I had a hard time finding the right size cans on a few things are there substitutes for the recipe ? Especially the chiles

  23. Just delicious. Made this on Sunday and the left I version in Monday even better. Did in the crock pot. A real tasty chili. Once again Skiny Taste a hit with us.

  24. I tried this in the instant pot and got a burn food notice almost immediately. I think because we drain all of the cans, there is not nearly enough liquid to do it in an instant pot. Also this recipe would really benefit from some garlic. Next time I try it, I’m going to not drain the diced tomatoes and add garlic, while cooking in the crockpot.

  25. I’ve been making this recipe for a couple years now every time I get a craving for chili. By far my favorite chili recipe. However, I am a vegetarian so I sub the turkey for Morningstar Farms beef crumbles or soy chorizo. I also add a couple cloves of fresh garlic and salt & pepper. Everyone loves it.

  26. I just made this! It it so good! My son is very particular and he loved it, said it was just like the one he loves at chipotle! A rave review! I used 97% lean turkey,  a little olive oil to brown it,  and drained only two of the cans of the beans in my crock pot. It had some liquid and I loved it. So much better than our usual recipe for Chile con carne, and healthier! Thank you Gina! Our family appreciates it so much!!! Tomorrow we are making your slow cooker roast turkey! It’s my other son’s favorite!

I am wondering if you can substitute dried black beans in this recipe? I make it all the time and just love it 🙂 but I forgot to grab a can of black beans this time around. Any suggestions?

  29. I out this recipe into My Fitness Pal and it is giving me double the calories per serving. Anyone know why?

All ingredients and number of servings are correct

  30. This looks wonderful. I have a question, I am doing Green WW and when I plug in the nutritional info on the WW site t gives me 6 points. Am I doing something wrong?

I come up with 6 points as well. It’s always a good idea to just check the nutritional value with the WW app, just to be sure.

Hi I love the 3 bean chili recipe ! I need to make it Vegan though . Im thinking of using morningstar farms veggie crumbles in place pf the turkey but Im worried the consistency won’t hold . Should i add them at  the end ? I usually do the instant pot version , but I could also do the slow cooker one . Thanks !

    1. I cook the crumbles then throw em in at the beginning just life beef, turns out perfect every time. 🙂 no change in texture or anything.

  32. If you omit all the chilies, then it is no longer chili. The amount of chili needed just adds flavor not heat, but if you must, why don’t you try it without, then add more spices as needed.

  33. This is one of the first times I have used my Instant Pot and the burn sign kept coming up. Is there anyway that I can avoid that or fix it for next time? Otherwise the flavors were really good!

    1. I would suggest not draining the tomatoes and perhaps adding some water.  I am making right now and my ninja FOODI was preheating pressure cooker and signaled me to add water.   I just added about a half cup of water.  Hopefully that’s the problem. Seemed odd no real liquids.

  34. I am looking forward to trying this recipe.  My family does not like spice. Should I omit the chilies and chili powder?  Will it still taste alright?

  35. It was the perfect day to make a pot of this chili. Hail and rain was falling outside and the temperature dropped. I gathered all the ingredients, cooked up the ground turkey (and onions) but everything into the crockpot and discovered I didn’t have any powdered chili! Yikes! But I did find a packet of McCormick’s Original Taco seasoning mix. I dropped it in, stirred it up and cooked on low for about 7 hours. I tasted it and it was AMAZING! DELICIOUS!

  36. Delicious! I puréed the can of tomatoes (husband hates tomato chunks) but otherwise made it as the recipe states. Even our 3 yr old ate it!

    1. I made it on the stovetop tonight & it was delicious! I followed directions for the crockpot & then just simmered on the stove top covered for about 45 minutes.

  37. Zero free style points! Whoo-hoo!  This is one of my all time favorite skinny taste recipes! So easy and so yummy!   I’m so happy that I can make it in the Instant Pot now!

  38. Everyone is leaving comments stating to refrain from draining the canned veggies (i.e. tomatoes) to create a more “soupy” consistency. But, I made this recipe following Gina’s instructions and I can vouch that you SHOULD drain the veggies, just like she instructed. Gina’s version comes out with the perfect consistency for chili. It was absolutely delicious. No doubt that I will be making this again. Just one question to WW friends… is it still ZERO points if I had 3 bowls of it?! (it was so good and I was so hungry… I couldn’t stop eating it)

I made this and it was so delicious.  It is a staple in the fridge to keep me on track for weight loss.  The flavor and spice is perfect and satisfying to the palet.

  40. I forgot to get canned chopped green chilies, so I used about 4 T of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce-added about 28 oz of water, and it gave it a different, smoky and super-hot flair!

  41. This was delicious.  I  missed the gene in soup making….I was so surprised ….this is the best chili recipe I have ever made!
    Love your cookbooks too!

Gina, I have a small instant pot. Would you be able to add as part of the instant pot instructions, what size is mandatory? Thanks!

  43. I am making this recipe this week. I cannot wait. After years of these recipes, I haven’t found one I don’t like…or that my picky boyfriend doesn’t like. You are greatly appreciated Gina!!

Isn’t this missing an ingredient like broth or water? There is not enough liquid in the ingredients list to make this a soup.

    1. Yes, it does need more liquid for the Instant Pot! I tried it as written in my Instant Pot and got a burn notice. I tried again after adding 2 cups of chicken broth and had no issues. At the end I took off the lid and put it on saute until it reached the consistency I like for chili.

Any time I try making chili (this and other recipes) in my Instant Pot, I get a “burn” message and it shuts down…Any ideas?

    1. The burn message will happen if the brown bits from frying the onion and turkey are stuck to the pot and not COMPLETELY scraped off when you add the liquids. Nothing should still be stuck to the bottom when you put the lid on.

I absolutely love this recipe and my husband just can’t get enough! I am making it for a holiday party tomorrow. I wanted to double the recipe. Can I just double it by using two of everything or. ?

  47. I’m not sure why, but when I made this in my Instant Pot it said “burn.” I followed the recipe and drained the beans and tomatoes. I added some water back to the pot, so hopefully that helps.

    1. The same thing happened to me! I ended up transferring it to my crock pot and it turned out pretty good, a little more soupy than I normally like because I tried to fix the instant pot issue by adding water but it wasn’t bad.

  48. This is a terrific base recipe for turkey chili. I’ve made it many times with various tweaks based on what I have in the house. Today I browned the meat on its own, then added an orange bell pepper and some finely chopped carrot to the onion and sauteed those for a few minutes before adding to the turkey in the crock. I only had 2 cans of beans (black and kidney) so that’s what I used. I also added some chipotle chili powder along with the other spices. Delicious!

  49. I’ve made this twice, and I love it. It converted a “beef only” chili guy. The first time I made it, it was dry. My crock pot does not have a rubber seal around the lid, so it does spit. This time I used some water to scrap browned bits from browning and added that to the crock pot. I used two cans of Ro-Tel tomatoes with chilies instead of the 28 oz diced tomatoes and chilies and added 14oz can tomato sauce. It still needed a little more water after cooking on low for 11 hours. But then it was great.

    1. I know its been a few years since you asked, but others may be interested. I’m making this now and using 93% turkey. It works out to 2 Blue WW pts/serving.

  50. Has anyone made this in the Instant Pot using the slow cooker option? I’ve read the slow cooker isn’t good in the instant pot because liquid doesn’t evaporate like a regular slow cooker.

  51. I think I commented on this recipe a long time ago. It’s my go-to base chili recipe now. Originally I made it as-is (or was) and it was great. The next time, since I like more spice I tweaked it to add cumin and garlic and a little oregano. This recipe is so easy. . The original recipe was a little too watery for me so I drained about half the cans and left some with liquid. This makes it just right for me. I don’t know why some people are freaking out about the amount of liquid or spices . Just tweak it to your liking. It’s not hard!
    This chili recipe is awesome!

  53. This is so easy and so delicious! I’ve made it numerous times, now, and using different methods: slow-cooker, stove-top, and oven. I’ve also used different combinations of beans depending on what I have on hand (black-eyed peas in today’s instead of chickpeas), and will sometimes use firm tofu instead of my usual lean ground chicken. This recipe is so versatile!

  54. I got an Instant Pot for my birthday, and this recipe was my first attempt at using it. I’m so happy with (a) how easy it was to use thanks to the clear directions (b) how delicious the chili is, and (c) how healthy it is. I didn’t add cumin because I didn’t have it on hand, and I used chili diced tomatoes, because that’s what I did have on hand. I’ll make this recipe again…and again…and again.

  58. This is my favorite Chilli recipe! I leave out the cumin and meat(vegetarian) and use a dried whole hot chili pepper(I  take it out when the chili tastes good to me)…When I take it to potluck and there’s never leftovers!
Would everything be the same to make on the stove top?

    1. Oh, and I’ve also done it stovetop (by simmering for several hours after bringing everything to a boil) and in the oven at a very low setting for several hours. Turned out great.

  59. I made this as my first recipe using my Instant Pot and I am seriously impressed by how easy it was to make and how delicious this is. After reading other comments, I did not drain the tomatoes nor the beans so the chili would not be too dry. The flavors are wonderful, the consistency is perfect, and the one cup serving is enough to fill me up. You did it again, Gina!

  60. Love this recipe so much! Put it together in the slow cooker while the Oscars were on last night and woke up to it smelling amazing. The one modification I made was I didn’t drain the tomatoes and it came out perfectly, tastes great. Definitely going to be a weekday lunch staple, thanks for the awesome recipe Gina!!

I made this exactly as indicated in the recipe, and my chili was not too dry.  It was delicious!  I used the Instant Pot.  The only thing I added at the end was a pinch of kosher salt and coarse ground pepper.

  62. Loved this recipe! My husband doesn’t like beans and he loved it too.  I used all the liquids from the beans and it was the perfect consistency.  Thank you 🙂

  63. I tried making this in the Instant Pot but kept getting a “burn” message. Any idea what I did wrong? I’m an IP newbie.

  64. I’ve made this recipe as is multiple time in the instant pot and love it! Was going to make it tonight, but double it. Do I have to do anything different? Will it be too much for an 8 quart IP?

  67. Rookie Instant Pot question…I just bought a 3 quart Instant Pot. Are you using the 6 quart size for your recipes? I can easily cut the ingredients in half to fit but do I need to adjust the cooking time at all? Thanks! Can’t wait to try these amazing looking recipes.

  68. Another huge hit in our house, even for the one who doesn’t like chickpeas. I’ve never thought to put cilantro on my chili, and what a difference that makes. You have never disappointed us in ANY of your recipes. Thanks again Gina!!

  69. Saw this recipe on WW Facebook (a success story, Yussy) followed the link, and decided I wanted it tonight! Had to substitute several things, which is my style! But because of time, I challenged myself to preparing it in my Wolfgang Puck pressure cooker (before Instant Pots)! We loved it, very, very filling! We ate it with Nabisco Good Thins Corn and sea salt crackers! It was so delicious!!! My husband and I are maintaining and loving #Freestyle and so excited to use more of Gina’s recipes!!!

  70. I made this recipe for the first time and its a keeper. My husband loved it as well. I do recommend the sour cream on top-added a nice flavor. I did read some of the reviews and agree about keeping some of the liquid and not draining all of it. I kept 1/4 of all the liquid from each can and used it in the crock pot and it was not dry at all. This is very filling and would be great for any party especially for the super bowl.

  71. For those mentioning the old recipe, it’s essentially the same just don’t drain your canned goods and omit the cumin, instead using 3tbsp of chili powder. This is my family’s favorite chili recipe!

  72. Another winning recipe! Made this one for the first time today and I’m so glad I doubled the recipe so use for lunches this week!

  73. So easy, filling, and delicious. This was the first thing I made in my Instant Pot– made it for a party (before even making it for myself to try) and everyone loved it. Now it’s a staple in my meal prep for the work week-keeps me feeling full for hours. I have also mixed in various kinds of beans. Another Skinnytaste classic.

  74. This recipe was my first-ever chili recipe and the very first SkinnyTaste recipe I made in my slow cooker. I am a single woman so I meal prep a lot and tend to eat the same thing Monday through Friday. This recipe allows me to cook once and have lunches for TWO weeks. I always pair with a serving of low fat Mexican blend shredded cheese, and a side of raw veggies. I also some cut up 1/4 of an avocado to mix in the chili at the time I am eating it. This recipe is FANTASTIC!

  75. Now that this is 0 points for the new WW plan how much gets you 0 points before it becomes points? Would 2 or 3 cups still be 0 points?

  76. I just got my Instant Pot and tried it for the first time today making this. It turned out fantastic! I followed the recipe exactly. Will definitely be making this again.

  77. This was my first time making chili, so I was a bit nervous. But it was delicious! I had friends over who also raved about it! Little did they know it was so healthy.

I made this for Dinner tonight in the Instant Pot and it is amazing! Would be able to add corn to it?

    1. I thought about doing that tonight but didn’t.  This chili is delicious.  I used the Instant Pot.  I will be making this again!!!

  79.  Love it!  Will definitely make agAin. Not sure with the old recipe is that everyone is referring to but I did take the suggestion to not drain the tomatoes,

  80. I just got my instant pot. This is the first recipe I made. I drained everything and after reading the comments was a little worried as I like my chili thick and hubby likes it soupy. So I went ahead and added a cup of beef broth. It turned out great! Appreciate all the great recipes and easy directions. This is definitely a keeper will make again.

  82. So excited to make this tonight. Snow day here in the south (which means no one is going anywhere) AND this is my first day on Freestyle. Loving that this is now ZERO points! Yummy!

  83. I’ve been reading comments that’s say the chili didn’t come out as moist or soupy as the old version, and I wholeheartedly disagree. I read the comments prior to me making it in my Instant Pot and didn’t drain the tomatoes bc of this so it wouldn’t be dry. I should’ve followed Gina’s recipe exactly because I found that it was waaay soupier than the original recipe, which was in my regular dinner rotation, not draining the vegetables like the commenters instructed. If you’re chili came out dry, something went array. Gina’s recipes have always been a homerun, and I should’ve followed her instructions to the letter bc she’s never disappointed me.

I just realized I do not have green chilies can I substitute something for them or does it just make it a little spicier?  If it just adds a spicier flavor I would be fine with leaving them out.

Do you have this recipe on the stove top? And Is ok to use dry beans that have been soaking all night?

  86. Can you give the instructions for the instant pot? I just got mine this week so I’m a newbie. Thanks!!

  87. It would be great if you could add instructions for a Dutch oven with slow cooker / instant pot recipes. Thanks!

  88. This looks great! Curious what your thoughts are on the new Weight Watchers Freestyle since you’ve been a member for a while.

  89. The point values are incorrect. It is 6 SMART POINTS, not 4. I think the smart points and point plus values were mixed up. But other than that… LOVE this. (I dont drain my tomatoes)

    1. Did you use the recipe builder? The only accurate way to determine any recipe’s SmartPoints® value is to plug the ingredients into the recipe builder on the Weight Watchers website (Click on “My Foods,” select “Recipe,” and click “Create a recipe.”) which does not count fruits and vegetables in recipes in the calculations as they are now 0 points.

The SmartPoints® calculator isn’t meant for recipes and will often give you the wrong points (usually higher) because it’s counting the fruits and vegetables. So if you see a recipe with a SmartPoints® value that’s different from what the calculator tells you, now you know why.

  90. I made this today for 6 of us – it was a great dinner, and I will make it again. I did include the liquid from the tomatoes, and am glad I did. I figured it would be on the mild side of spicy, so just put a bottle of tabasco on the table for those of us that like our food a bit hotter.

Served it with a green salad and corn bread – perfect meal for a fall night.

  91. Mine turned out a little dry….not sure if i did something wrong? I saw people posting about the “old” recipe… can i still access that one and try both? Love your recipes, I used to hate cooking until I discovered Skinny Taste! So easy and always so delicious!! Now I love cooking your recipes!

  92. This is hands-down THE BEST CHILI OF MY LIFE!!! And nothing beats coming home from a long day of work and already having dinner made! Thank you Gina 🙂

  101. I also liked the old recipe as well it was much juicier. I found when i did this new one it came out not as soupy which is what i liked about the old recipe.

    1. Are you using the recipe builder?

      1. Wow — I had no idea about this! I was wondering why my points kept being off sometimes! I usually just put in what the #’s are off your details and then calculate because I like to have it noted that I had “skinny taste ___” and save it! (I often use the same ones over b/c i love them!). Moving forward i’ll just have to create a new recipe every time?

  102. Does the calories count the additional toppings or is that just calories for a cup of the soup without any toppings?

  103. This has always been my go to chili recipe but I noticed you changed it a lot – draining all the beans and tomatoes. I should’ve followed the old ones as I’m nervous this is going to be dry. Also why cumin!? This used to be just 3tbsp of chili powder and always tasted great. Does everything need cumin!?

    1. I agree!! Someone is going out of their way to provide you with amazing recipes and all you do in return is complain?? Wow… Some people really have a pair on them…

I have a question…new cook here. When a recipe calls for a 28 oz can of tomatoes, is that the amount of the tomatoes only? I often get my canned tomatoes from Costco and break them down to save money and I don”t know how to convert it without the weight of the can.

It seems the last time I made this it had more liquid. Seems dry. I didn’t drain the tomatos by mistake and glad I didnt. It would have. Been super dry I don’t remember draining all the beans last time. Is this a different recipe. ?

    1. Mine dried out, too. FYI, I have a 6-quart Hamilton Beach Set n Forget slow cooker. It didn’t burn — I just added two cups of water at the end of 7 hours cooking on high and it still turned out great. I would make this again, but next time I wouldn’t drain the tomatoes and I would add a little water or broth before I start cooking.

    2. I never drain the tomatoes because I never noticed that the recipe called for it until reading your comment. Lol. It turns out perfect every time.

  106. When I put the 3 bean chili into the WW calculator it shows that 1 serving is 6 smart points,  not 4.

    1. You can’t use the calculator, it won’t be accurate.

      1. Thank you Gina! I had no idea. I will use the recipe builder from now on when calculating points for recipes.

  107. My new Sunday routine, make a big batch of something from   Skinnytaste and eat it all week, no more dinner/ lunch prep worries.  This week, three bean turkey chili for lunch, zucchini lasagna for dinner, done!  I do this for me, I have no trouble making my family their dinner while I eat mine. As long as we are all at the table together, that is what matters.

  108. I have this recipe saved in my pinterest from the first time you shared it… and I literally make it once a month… it is my favorite chili. EVER. And all my roommates (3 boys and 1 girl) love it too. And it makes enough for everyone to have! Glad to see it reborn on this website because it’s my FAVORITE.

  109. Another delicious recipe of yours, Gina!  Thank you!  How does this one freeze?  Thanks for your time.

  110. This is my second time making this except I have it simmering on the stove. I hope it’s as good as the crockpot version because it’s delicious ????
We like our chili a little “soupy” so I dont drain the tomatoes. I also add garlic, a. chopped poblano pepper, and a chopped red Serrano pepper to spice it up. I buy no salt tomatoes and beans and just add a little to taste at the end.  Sooooo yummy!

  111. Did you change this recipe? I’ve made this a million times, and I’ve never drained the beans. I feel like the recipe used to say “undrained” after all the beans…

  112. I’ve been making this recipe for a couple years now and it is delicious! I love lots of beans in chili. Originally I made it as written, and it was great. I do add other stuff now for personal taste. I add cumin and garlic. I use chili hot beans, garbanzos, black beans, and kidney beans. Sometimes I use Rotel in place of the chilies, it just depends on what they have at the store. This is my go-to chili recipe now. So easy and delicious! All of your recipes are wonderful! I’m so excited to get your cookbook!

  113. Can’t wait to try this! I just got an Instant Pot and was wondering how to modify the directions for the IP? Thanks so much Gina, your site and books are absolutely amazing!

  114. I made this tonight and added to my ww calucator and it gave me 6 sp per serving.  Is the info incorrect on here?

    1. Per Gina:

The only accurate way to determine any recipe’s SmartPoints® value is to plug the ingredients into the recipe builder on the Weight Watchers website (Click on “My Foods,” select “Recipe,” and click “Create a recipe.”) which does not count fruits and vegetables in recipes in the calculations as they are now 0 points.

  115. Making this for dinner tonight! My husband is not a fan of beans in chili. I was thinking about using one can of beans, then using two cans of something else. Does anyone have recommendations on bean substitutes for chili? Thanks!

    1. You can add more meat, or just omit the the other two cans. Another option would be to puree the other cans.

I am now making the crock pot turkey white bean Pumpkin chili. After 6 hrs cooking it is still very watery, more like a bean soup. What do you advise.
    Suzanne Barber

  117. I’ve been making a version of this recipe for years. I put all my tomatoes, chiles, and add fresh cilantro and 1 whole white onion in blender before putting in crockpot. On lazy days, you can use the reduced sodium taco seasoning packet and it comes out great too!

I am just SO excited that I have found your website accidentally. I am a struggling diabetic and think your recipes will help me immensely. I am looking forward to purchasing your cookbooks.

  119. Did you change this recipe recently? I recall it used to be all the cans of beans and diced tomatoes were undrained. Is there enough liquid if you drain everything?

      1. I think it might’ve been best to leave maybe one of the cans undrained. I just tried the recipe with everything drained and mine came out slightly burnt 🙁 I added a 1/2cup of water to it before leaving this morning and even that evaporated. Still tasty though 🙂

  121. How come when I use the points calculator on the weight watchers app it tells me 6 smart points, but it’s listed as 4 smart points?  Am I entering it wrong it wrong? Or is it because some ingredients are 0, but still are listed in the nutritional info?

    2. I entered this recipe into the WW recipe builder and got 6 SP too, BUT I noticed that it changed the chickpeas to “cooked chickpeas” which made the recipe 6 SP per serving. I didn’t select cooked chickpeas from the ingredients list, the WW site made the change by itself (I acutally had to do this 3 times to get it correct)…gremlins I guess. Anyway, when I finally got “canned chickpeas drained” to add to the recipe it gave me 4 SP per serving. I used the 93% ground turkey and it only added 1 SP. My supermarket rarely carries the 99% ground turkey for some reason. This is a great deal for 5 SP. I also added a can of fat free, low sodium beef broth and a pepper in adobo sauce which I had in the freezer from one of the other recipes. Chili came out awesome. Thanks, Gina!

  122. If you double the recipe to have leftovers for lunches to take to work, how long would you suggest I cook it for?

  123. Very tasty and filling. Really needed acid, though. I will also add some smoked sweet paprika next time for depth of flabor.

  124. Just wondering why you changed the recipe to drain the canned beans?  Does it make a big difference with the flavor?  I have made this recipe many times over the last few years and it is now a family favorite! One of my favorites on your site!

  125. I just plugged your nutritional facts into the Weight Watcher app points calculator, and it says a serving is 6 Smart Points. Your recipe claims 4 SP. Why the difference?

  126. One of the best chili recipes I’ve made! I used a can of chili beans in medium chili sauce instead of red beans. I don’t have a slow cooker so I put it in the pressure cooker on high for 8 minutes and it was AMAZING.  I’ve made  several recipes from your new cook book and converted slow cooker time to pressure cook and it’s worked great on everything so far! Love your recipes and your new cookbook!
I bet the leftover chili will be even better.

  127. This turned out great.  Added some cubed butternut squash for the last hour (for a little added veggie) and it’s so tasty.

Oh and I also didn’t have diced green chilies on hand, so I used 1 small can of diced tomatoes, and 1 small can of diced tomatoes with green chilis. It was perfect!

  129. Mine is in the crockpot now…smelling wonderful! Can’t wait. Thanks for such healthy recipes! I have been following WW for almost 1 year now and have lost 57 pounds. Thankful for you and your recipes which has really helped me succeed!

  130. The nutritional information says Yields: 1 cup, Serving size: 1 cup – In some of your other recipes, you say how many servings a recipe will yield, and I find this information helpful if it can be provided here too.
    Thanks!

  131. irecently purchasedboth of your books but when i entered the nutritional values into the weight watchers e tools for smart points the calculations were often vastly diferent from the smart points you published for your books. am i doing something wrong?

    1. 132. For anyone following WW, this does not add up to 4 sp. I get 6 and that’s with saturated fat of 0. It has been left blank so I don’t know if it should be 0.

  133. My husband DOES NOT like diced tomatoes…..what could I substitute here?? Would crushed tomatoes work or would that make it too soupy?

  134. This is a must try! It is my all time FAVORITE chili recipe!!! Simple, cheap and absolute chili perfection.
I am curious though why the previous recipe called for undrained beans but this one does not. I always assumed that is what added to the great flavor. Regardless Gina you are the best. I just got your new cookbook and have a few recipes lined up:)

  135. How would you compare this recipe with your Turkey Chili Taco soup???  (Other than this one being prepared in  slow cooker).

Debating which one to serve for my book club

    1. Lyn they are both outstanding. This one has more of a hearty traditional chili flavor and the taco soup naturally has more of a tex mex taste especially with the refried beans. So go with the taco if you are opting for a twist.

  136. Can someone tell me where you find the serving size? I see the points but not the serving size. HELP! I love chili and I make a really good one, but this looks very good. I am salivating. HELP!

  137. Recipe looks great but I calculated the recipe in my weight watchers app and it comes to 6 smart points and not 4 smart points. How did you get 4?

  138. Love this recipe! My kids love it too!

Gina, thank you for all your work. I have been visiting your blog for years. And sharing it with friends! Never a bad experience.

  139. love your recipes thank you so much for sharing them. What’s a tin of tomato sauce though? Is that passata?

  140. Hi there. Just saw Jacques Pepin’s recommendation if your cookbook on FB. Congrats!
Been following your site and like your stuff so much.

  141. Can you please verify weight watchers smart points I’m using your information and I don’t come up with 3sp I also have run other recepies and I have the same problem  hoe do you calculate so points

    1. The only accurate way is using the Weight Watchers Recipe builder and inputting all the ingredients which is how I calculate every recipe. The calculator is not accurate because fruits and veggies are 0 in the recipe builder, but they are calculated in the n.i. Try it out on your computer and you will see what I mean.

  142. Love this recipe. I'm assuming you mean cook on LOW for 6-8 hours not cook on High??? All I need to do is brown the ground turkey. I use frozen onions from the store. They are great!

    1. Nope that’s right. You cook the crap out of the sauce LOL which is why I think this recipe has such good flavor.

Are your nutrition facts for the entire recipe or per serving? I put the nutrition facts in the calculator and it said 5 points. Just curious how you got 3 points.

  144. Super Bowl Sunday and stuck at work in the ER so I brought my crock pot with me and made this chili for myself and the staff. I was skeptical about the garbanzo beans and came close to leaving them out, but so glad I didn't. EVERYONE LOVED THIS CHILI!! As others have said, I added Cumin and Garlic and it was delicious. I've made several chili recipes from this website, (all great) but this one is by far my favorite. I paired it with your Skinny Taco Dip for my vegetarian coworkers, and that was a huge hit as well. I didn't think I would like the taco dip myself, but I loved it. 20 pounds down, doing nothing but cooking and enjoying your wonderful recipes! Thank you Gina!

  145. I love this chili! I have made it many times, but this time I exchanged canned chilies for 1 raw chili (added half to the turkey and onions while browning and half directly into the mixture) since I had raw chilies already and also added a few cloves of fresh garlic. Delicious!

  146. Hello Gina!

Was recommended to take a look at your website – i am sure glad i did! everything sounds/looks amazing/ and is SO simple. If i were to attempt this on the stove top, how long would you say the cooking time should be?

    Thanks!

I just want to confirm that you cook it on high for 6-8 hours? That seems a little long for being on high. Thanks!

  148. Any chance any of you know how big a serving is for this? I made some awhile ago and froze it, so trying to figure out how much I can have!

  149. This is my go-to recipe during the winter. I make it like every week. I think I'm addicted. I minus the chilies but it is still so good.

  150. This was a delicious recipe. I also added appx 1 tsp Chipolte Chili Powder for some added heat, appx 1 tsp Smoked Paprika and 1 Red Bell Pepper and topped with some avocado. So good! Next time I'm going to try adding a bag of frozen sweet corn.

  151. Dear Gina – thanks for the delicious looking recipe! I wanted to know if I am making double the recipe (for a large dinner party) do I need to double the cooking time as well? Or else, how much longer does it need to cook?

  152. Does anyone know if I'd be able to prep this entire meal the night before instead of just browning the turkey? I need to leave for work very early in the morning so would prefer to do everything the night before. Also, would I just put it in the fridge in a bowl with aluminum foil, or should it be in a more airtight container? Thanks for the help! I've made this before and LOVED it!

  153. Hi there – I wonder how much the calories change if I used ground chicken breast and cannellii beans (instead of the chickpeas). I tried one site and I wasn't sure how accurate that was (almost doubled the calories!). Thanks in advance!

Also, Gina – I just found your blog in the last week and I am so glad I did! I've made several of your recipes so far and they are all great! Thank you for sharing your passion!

  154. I took this recipe and added some cayenne, basil, garlic powder and instead of regular diced tomato I did fire roasted diced tomatoes and I also added bacon and frozen corn.
I put white cheddar and sour cream on top after cooking it.
    It was delicious!!

  155. The recipes have been so amazing. I made this one and doubled everything. I used my leftover turkey and doubled the chili powder. The seasoning was a little strong.
Should I have doubled the chili powder? It was a little hot and I normally really like hot dishes.
    Thanks for the comments,
    Fay

  156. Would the points value change if I use Kidney beans instead of small red beans? It's what I have here?

  157. Wonderful, added a tablespoon of fennel seeds and cumin as well as 2 bay leaves! Opted not to use the peppers and added Trader Joe's fireroasted tomatoes instead to add a kick friendly kick! Delicious!

Also I drained and rinsed canned beans!

Thanks for helping me through my first ever chili!

  158. I made this recipe last night! It was my first time trying one of your recipes, as they come highly recommended by my boyfriend's sister. I haven't tasted it yet (I'm going to heat some up for lunch in a little bit!), but the consistency seems a little thin. Did I do something wrong, or is this just a more soupy/watery chili? Was I supposed to drain the diced tomatoes? I actually did drain them a little bit, but it didn't specify so i left some of the liquid in. I'd so appreciate some guidance because I love chili & would like to try this again!

  159. I love this recipe! I've made it so many times and everyone who has ever tasted it loves it. I usually add 1T cumin 1-2 tsp oregano and 1 tsp or less of chipotle powder. I also will sometimes add a can of corn if I don't have enough beans. All ways have been amazing. Thanks for the recipe!

  160. I've been making this dish for over a year and now my family demands it as part of our Christmas Eve tradition. I use half the amount of chili powder with them because they're sensitive to spiciness, and I use extra hot chili powder when it's just my wife and me. Definitely one of my favorite recipes.

  161. Gina.. is there a Crockpot you recommend? I just cracked my crockpot that we were given as a wedding present and not really ready to drop $$$ on a new one. Looking for 6 qt. and something that switches to warm after alloted cooking time so it doesn't burn the deliciousness out of the food. Thanks!

How spicy is this? 2 TBSP of Chili Powder seems like a lot of spice. My husband unfortunately can't eat very spicy foods.

    1. I find it to be not very spicy. The first time I made it I had the same feeling. I kept looking at the recipe to make sure that’s what it said! But I don’t find it spicy at all, and I actually add hot sauce to my bowl to make it a little spicier. I would make sure to get mild green chilies and not hot ones. I think the chili powder just adds a lot of flavor, but not really spice. It makes so much chili that it really is spread out.

  163. This is probably not the healthiest chili recipe because of all the canned items and sodium content. However, I probably wouldn't make this as often as I do in our house if it didn't have all the canned items, which makes this so easy to make!

Everyone is surprised when I tell them it's turkey, and I've had to share this recipe multiple times!

Love it! Thanks so much for sharing!

    1. You could always soak and cook up some dried beans the day before to do away with the canned items.. You may have to alter the liquid content and spices but it should work fine.?

    a little hope

Would it be alright to use ground beef instead of turkey? Obviously the points will change, but my husband hates ground turkey and I have a lot of ground beef to use.

    1. I have once during a cabin trip. It was perfectly fine. The cooking time was shorter and I had to add a little bit of water when it was almost done, but you can totally do it. Hope this helps!

  165. Made this today, as we have a snow day! A couple of revisions: added garlic (3 cloves), instead of 2 cans of diced tomatoes I used one can of diced and one can of diced w/ green chilies (in addition to the can of green chilies) 1 Tbs Cumin, 1 Chipotle Pepper in adobe sauce, and an extra Tbs of Chili powder.
My daughter gave up meat for lent, so I use the Boca veggie crumbles and two Boca burgers diced.
WHOA…this is AMAZING!!!! My recipe in the WW recipe builder was 4 pts plus.
Thinking of making a Crema w/ avocado, Greek yogurt, lime, & cumin for a topping!

  166. This is a great recipe. It needed a little something so I added a little cumin and salt and that took it over the top. So yummy!

  167. I am not sure if I mentioned this before, but this recipe is also Simply Filling aka Core program on WW. I make this and free the leftovers so I have lunches that are Simply Filling. Yum! Going up to the poconos tonight and volunteered to make dinner for tonight and tomorrow. Skinny Mac and Cheese tonight and this Chili with cornbread tomorrow!

  168. This was so good! I pureed one can of chickpeas though because they're not my favorite! probably made it a bit thicker. Loved it!

  169. Made this for the second time yesterday and it's a true winner. I add two chipotles in adobo chopped and a T of cumin, drained and rinsed the beans and added about a cup of chicken stock.

I did an experiment today and made a batch on the stove (2.5 hours simmering) and a batch in the crock. I couldn't tell a difference between them.

  170. Hello. I was just wondering if there was any way you could make this chili without a crockpot? Thanks so much.

    1. See my comment below. I made two batches one day – one in crock pot and one on the stove. The stove top simmered on low about 2.5 hours. I couldn't tell a difference between the two.

  171. Gina, I love your recipes! I was wondering if I wanted to cook this longer than 8 hours like 10-12 hours….would you still cook it on high or low?
(My work days are usually about 10 hours, so I'm trying to figure out how to time crockpot)
    Thanks!

  172. Not sure if this was asked or mentioned in any of the previous 200+ comments. I apologize if it was. Could you do this on LOW in crockpot? If so; how long would you suggest.

    Thanks,
    Mary

  173. This was SO delicious. I made it for dinner last night and had leftovers for lunch today. Thanks for an awesome recipe!

  174. I have made this recipe twice now and everyone absolutely loves, loves, loves it! I made corn bread to go along with it. I was skeptical about garbanzos in the mix but was pleasantly surprised. Gina, you make my WW journey so much more manageable and I appreciate all your hard work!!

  175. I didn't drain my Diced Tomatoes and noticed it to be a little watery. did this happen to anyone else?

  176. Do you think I could make this vegetarian by using the veggie (Morningstar or similar) crumbles? Or would it lose some of the taste?

I don't usually leave comments, but I had to say that this chili turned out amazing! I added garlic, cayenne pepper, and a can of corn. I had it in the crock pot on low for 2 hours, and then high for 7 hours, turned out perfect! I love your recipes, I have yet to try something that isn't great. Thank you!

  180. This is a great recipe! As a Weight Watchers (WW), I am always looking for recipes that are easy and point friendly. As a bonus, this recipe contains ALL power foods which makes it a Simply Filling recipe! YAY!

  181. This was delicious! My whole family loved it. I added a glove of garlic and only used a can of red beans. It was a little soupy (but good that way) so next time to thicken it I might drain the tomatoes. My husband didn't mind, he just threw his corn bread in to soak it up. Will definitely make again!

  182. This was absolutely delicious. I had to make it in a chili pot because I came to the heartbreaking realization that the movers broke my crock pot when I opened the box. (Don't worry, my mom generously bought me a new one!) The chili was amazing. Very flavorful and definitely didn't taste like I was eating anything healthy!

ok, so, I am single for many years and have been just doing the easy low cal. frozen dinners :)/ I am so excited that I have, as we speak crock pot chili cooking.. I am not a bean person so I only used pinto beans. I love garlic so I added minced garlic to the recipe. I don't like chunky tomatoes so omitted that… Thad is the first recipe that I have tried in 20 years.. I am excited to see how it is going to turn out :)….I will let you know..Is it less calories with less beans? I am so glad that a friend referred me to your website…

  184. I fell in love with this recipe, everyone in my house liked it as well. It is so easy and convenient and super tasty. This is my first recipe of Gina's but now I will continue making more recipes. I appreciate you putting the old W.W. points as well.

  185. I have been in First Place Bible study for the past 8.5 weeks, working to lose weight, get healthier, and re-align priorities. One of my friends in class told me about your site, and I have become addicted! In 8 weeks I have lost 20 lbs, and I am still losing! My family has not wrinkled their noses at any of the healthier dishes I have served so far! Thanks so much!

  186. Just finished my first bowl, and I've got to say, it was amazing! Not sure where I went wrong as it only made 6 servings, but none the less it's by far the best thing I've made in ages… and the family agree, haha.

    Thankyou!

  187. I made this on Saturday and it came out delicious. Not sure how crazy I am about the chickpeas in it, but it still tastes great. Husband loved the smokey flavor of it, and tastes even better left over. I didn't add anything or make any changes, don't think it needs to be messed with. I can't decide which I like better – the Turkey Taco Soup or this recipe! Both are equally great.

  188. absolutely delicious!!! i used one 14.5 oz can of diced tomatoes (drained) and 2 10oz cans of rotel mild (drained) to cover both the tomato and chilies. Other than that, followed the directions fully and it was so good! Had it for lunch and dinner yesterday, froze a few bowls of it, and lunch again today! It's a winner!

This came out amazing and perfect for the cold weather, so easy and healthy too…thanks again gina!!

  190. We had this yesterday! It was quick and easy! My family had an event to go to during the day all morning to mid-afternoon and the temps were in the mid 40's! This chili really hit the spot after being outside for so long and while we watched football!

This was fantastic! I've made many recipes from your site! I love chili and my dad has always made his "famous" kind. This was equally as good! I added fresh garlic (tip from another commenter) and cumin! Turned out wonderfully!

  192. Long time follower, first time commenter 😉 Love this recipe and nearly ALL of your others! Just curious as to if this one is freezer friendly? And if so, would you recommend freezing it before or after cooking? I'm making a big stack of your recipes to fill up the freezer of a brand new adoptive mommy 🙂

  193. This is the 50th recipe I've tried from Skinnytaste and they never disappoint. Whole family loved this! I want to thank you – I joined Weight Watchers in April and have lost 45 lbs so far. I tell everyone my success is due to Skinnytaste. Your recipes have made this a true lifestyle change for me. Even my WW leader told me she tried two of your recipes last week because I brag about them so much! 23 weeks and I've had a loss every week – your site has been a Godsend!

  194. I just made this for dinner, and this is BY FAR the best chili recipe I've come across. My taste buds are in heaven! This is so incredibly rich in flavor. The only thing I added was ground red pepper for a little extra kick. And now I have left overs to enjoy for over a week. Awesome!!

  195. This is amazing! Just made a batch! Beyond delicious! Haven't had chili since I began weight watchers! what a treat!!

  196. This was perfection!! I've made a lot of chili in the past, but none ever as good and flavorful as this recipe. I was skeptical about the diced chilies, but they add wonderful flavor. Brilliant!!

    1. You should figure that most food only lasts a certain number of days in the fridge after you have cooked it. Most food does not hold for two weeks once cooked, and I never eat anything that has been in there for a week. I may be overly cautious but a week seems like long enough, but after a couple of days if you haven't made it all the way through your leftovers then you might want to think about freezing the rest for a future night when you are tired and need dinner quick. It takes a lot for one person to keep a website like this going, new recipes and responding to our comments which is so wonderful. I think we as people could figure a few things out on our own and not ask more of someone who is already giving so much to us,especially when it is not something that is a necessity. Use your best judgement when it comes to how long it will keep in your fridge, just like you do with anything else you make and or have in there. I am sure you will do wonderfully! 🙂

  197. This recipe was so easy and so good! This is my first time making chilli and using my crock pot! I will certainly be using this recipe again in the future. Thanks!

  198. So Im making this chili right now, and just realized for the last 4 hours I had my crock pot on low, instead of high. Just turned it to high…but that shouldnt makes a difference, should it? :

  199. After browning turkey and onions,I added 3 cloves of garlic and two Tbs. of fresh cilantro with other ingredients. It was delicious topped with chopped red onion, lite sour cream, lite shredded cheddar. p.s., cooked on stove top due to scheduling problem and it was SUPERB! I can't imagine how tasty it would be if it had cooked for three hours 😉

  200. We fixed this today for dinner and it was awesome! I'm so glad I found this blog! I've been doing Weight Watchers for several years and am always looking for new, healthier recipes! Thanks for sharing!

  201. I have lost count of the # of times I have made this chili it is one of the best. My son says he is bringing a bottle of wine that begs a spicy dish guess what we are having for dinner tonight?

    Thank you many times over.

  202. Hi I wanted to know if I can Substitute ground chicken breast instead of turkey chop meat? this sounds delish thanks

  203. I made this and didnt get home from work in the 8 hours so it cooked a bit too long, about 8 hrs 45min total. It was dry and a bit overcooked on the bottom. Is there a way to moisten it other than just adding water and simmering?? Any ideas?

    1. When you say chopped chilies, do you mean diced green chilies? I have those but didn't want to put them in in case it wasn't the right chilies. Thank you so much!

  204. Made this for dinner tonight. I confess that I was skeptical about putting chickpeas in my chili, but they were just fine. I will definitely make this again!

  205. This was SO good! I actually was thinking before I made it, "how can a recipe that is so simple for chili taste as good as the reviews say?" So I tried it- I added garlic and about 1 tsp cumin, just because I love both of those, but it is just about the best chili I have ever had- and easy too! My picky husband had just taken a small helping, but after his first bite, said, "mmm, this is good!" and went back for a large scoop. We served this wish sliced green onions, low fat sour cream, cheddar cheese and crushed tortilla chips- baked for me. SO YUMMY!!!! Thanks for all of your amazing recipes!

  206. Made this yesterday for 24 adults/children for my sons 3rd birthday party. It was a HIT! So much of a hit that I ran out so no one could have seconds! Next time I will triple the recipe instead of doubling. It was so simple to make and amazingly tasty. I had many requests for the recipe.

I served it with corn muffins and a mixed greens salad and made the Pineapple Bliss cupcakes for dessert. Perfect party food but next time I need to make more of everything because it tasted so good! Thanks again Gina…

  207. This was great! I didn't have any turkey, so I made it exactly as described, minus the turkey. It was so good! Thanks!

  208. Can you use white beans rather than chickpeas? And will points be the same? I want to make this tomorrow.. Thank you!

  209. Thank you for all of your recipes! Many are not on regular rotation at our house. Do you happen to have the sodium content handy for this chili? Thanks!

  210. This chili recipe is WONDERFUL! Made it a few times now and everyone wants the recipe. So easy to make and tastes great.

I must admit I make the best chili around (so, I thought!) but WOW – I will always make this one instead of mine! Thank you!

  212. OMG I just made this today. Cooked in crockpot for 8 hrs. like you said. It was absolutely delicious. My whole family loved it so much.

I must say I've been making about 3 recipes per week and have loved every one of them.

    Thanks!

  213. This was wonderful. Made this on Saturday, and it was so so good. My whole family loved it. I love this web site, and share it with everyone I know, and talk to. Yummy meals that are healthy.

  214. I just tried this and love it! I'm 5 months pregnant now and starving all the time, but I refuse to gain the same 60 pounds I did with my first. Your web site will be a staple in our house to help keep me full, healthy, and not gaining too much baby weight! 😉 Thank you!!!!!

  215. Gina, I Have followed your website for over a year now, I LOVE it and rave to family and friends every chance I get! Was wondering how many points plus you think this would be if I don't use any meat? I am guess 3+, not sure though, wondering if you know? Im planning on making it this week, meat free! 🙂 thanks so much!

  216. I found your recipe on Pinterest, and am now an avid follower of your website. Thank you so much for sharing your recipes!

  217. DANG (not the word I really used)…I used 93/7 lean ground turkey, not turkey breast. Not really worried about the calories/point difference because I'm making it for work. I'm worried about how its going to turn out! Crap! (again, not the word I'm using at the moment. Oh well, its in the crock pot. Cooking it a night early because "it's always better after a day!". Wish me luck!

I thought it was very delicious and hearty for the most part, but next time I will leave out the chickpeas (too bean-y for our taste), and add a chopped jalapeno for more spice. All in all, I gave it an 8 out of 10!

  219. Love how awesome you are, just checking to see if the points or serving size changed as you commented that you were double checking last February.
    Thanks for making WW delicious!

  220. Another delicious dinner. My daughter ate two bowls and wants to take some for lunch tomorrow. Thanks again!

  221. My fiancee made this chili today because she's on WW and we're both eating healthier. It was awesome and I'm a tough customer but I'm sold!

I hope this question hasn't been asked yet, but can this be cooked on the stovetop vs. a crockpot? If so, for how long? I don't have a crockpot but would love to try the recipe!

  223. Made the chili for dinner last night. We all loved it, great recipe. The only change I made was adding a couple cloves of garlic in the mix. We cooked in the crock pot on low for 8 hours and it turned out fine.

  224. Does it have to be 6-8 hours on high? Wouldn't it over cook? What is the reason for being on high for so long?

  225. Great recipe! I was skeptical about the cooking time as well, but it turned out perfect after 6 hours on high. Keep up the great work.

I just had a question about the cooking time. Since the meat is already cooked, it still needs 6-8 hours to cook on high? That seems like a long time. I made a chicken and rice dish in the crock pot yesterday, and it only took 5 hours on low. Please let me me know, as I'm looking forward to making this, but afraid to leave it that long on high. Thanks!

Yes, that's right. The longer the better but if after less time you taste it and are happy with the results, you could always shut it off. It won't hurt your turkey by cooking it longer, it's like simmering a meat sauce all day.

  227. Do you really cook it on HIGH for 6-8 hours? I cook mine on low and it comes out perfect. I guess crockpots vary. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this recipe! Peggy

This would work in a 6 quart so yes, you will have to scale it down.

    Sorry, 99% fat free turkey.

  229. Love the site! Thanks!! The recipe looks yummy, can't wait to try it but where do you find fat free turkey?

  230. Hi Gina! I love your blog; I always look to your site first when I'm planning dinner! I just got a new crockpot and this is the first recipe I'm going to try. My crockpot is 3.5 quart, is that big enough or will I have to scale this recipe down? Thanks so much!

So I just made this TONIGHT. Was worried that it was going to be to many tomatoes. I couldn't find chilli's with out tomatoes mixed in so I had a bunch, but most of them cooked down so much that the chunks that were left were minimal. I am learning to love tomatotes in things!! Such a delicious and hearty chilli. My next thing to do is to drain off some of the juice and make it into an enchalada or sorts! GREAT RECIPE!!

  232. I made this tonight and am thankfully adding this to one of my fav Gina recipes. Having makeover spinach gratin on my thanksgiving table also 🙂

  233. Maybe I did something wrong or missed a step (?), but this was quite bland made exactly as the recipe calls… added some garlic, cumin, chipotle and a few other seasonings I can't remember. Much better! Would definitely make it again with those quick adjustments.

    1. I thought the same. I don't like it too spicy, but this was a little bland so I added red pepper flakes, more chili powder and green pepper. I wish I had added garlic too. Makes quite a bit of chili. I prefer Gina's turkey taco soup. My personal favorite.

  234. To my friends, I call your site my favorite secret website. I always am using your recipes and can't wait to try this one!

  235. I would say its about 3.5. My crock pot is a 7qt and it fills it up half way. I double the recipe and it spills over the top a little after a couple hours.. I don't know if that helps at all.

  236. I've got this in the crock pot right now! I used my own beans that I cooked from scratch with no salt added 🙂 This is gonna be good~

@anonymous wondering about the size of the crock pot – I have the standard-sized crock pot (I can't find a quart number anywhere) and it's leaving about 2 inches of empty space at the top right now. If yours is smaller than the standard size, I don't think this recipe will fit.

  237. This was a very good recipe and so easy. I loved it, served over rice or my daughter over spaghetti and cheese. Yummy. I just wanted to say thank you for this skinny recipes and all the nutrition posted, I appreciate it!

  238. This was so good!! My whole family loved it! and i loved how the cilantro really blended the flavors together well! def making again! thanks for all these great recipes!

  239. Is there a substitute for chickpeas? My fiance hates them! I just don't want to add tons of calories.

  240. heya Gina – Made this last night. came up with 8 servings when I weighed it on my digital scale and portioned it out to individual cups. tastes great, thank you!

  241. We've made this twice now, and it's wonderful. Pepper Jack adds a nice kick instead of the cheddar. My mom has her doubts about "diet chili", but even my dad conceded that this is good!

  242. Okay, I've made this twice, once with turkey and once without. Both were just awesome. It's the best chili I've ever eaten. I love chickpeas, but it never occured to me to put them in chili.

  243. YUM!!! This was so delicious! I used dark kidney beans instead of chickpeas! I agree with everyone else…my house smelled so good! I can already see me making another pot of this within the next few days. All my friends and family want me to "share" your recipes aka I make them, they eat them! 🙂

  244. Gina-This recipe sounds delicious, can't wait to try it! However, I am concerned with the sodium content with all the canned beans, as my hubbie has to be careful with his salt. Could I drain all the beans and substitute a can of low sodium chicken broth to replace the lost liquid? Thanks for all your healthy tips & recipes!!

  245. Thank you Thank you Thank you for posting! I made something similar tonight and didn't keep track of the ingredients… I'm so glad I found your site ( restarted WW this week using old-already paid for meeting materials)

  246. Gina! This recipe is amazing! My "picky" eater loved it. =)

I don't do weight watchers but just looking to eat healthy and so far I've tried 2 recipes and they've been a hit! Thank you!!

  247. I was just wondering, I use dry beans for most of my stuff instead of canned beans, do I just soak my beans like normal and then measure out what a can would be or do I measure before soaking them? Thank you so much.

  248. This is my kind of recipe – simple, easy, healthy and delicious sounding. I love easy ways to make cooking simple and delicious and the slow cooker is one of the best!

  249. I made this for dinner last night. Like previous posters, I added a couple of cloves of minced garlic and a diced green pepper. Really yummy and plan to make it again.

  250. Just wondering do you mean green chilies?? not sure if i know what chopped chiles in a can are?? i am from Canada and i havent seen these before.. guess i will have to look? Would chopped green chiles work??
    Thanks!

  251. Made this tonight for my fiance and I. It was absolutely delicious and he loved it as well!! I can't wait to try more of your recipes!

  253. YUMMY! Just made it tonight and it was a hit for everyone in the house! Thanks for all the great recipes! LOVE your site!

  254. This is a delicious chili. I'm very impressed. As a note, though, your recipe says to leave it on high for 6-8 hours. I'm not sure that's a good idea, I set mine on low and it did wonderfully.

Ok, making this over to see how many servings I get, and I'll adjust the points if it differs.

  257. Oh my – this is SO delicious!! I thought the flavor was delicious and rich and didn't need a thing on top. I had a 3pt serving of Baked Tostitoes with it and was in Heaven!

As a few others have mentioned, I came up with 8 servings too. I figured up all the points though and come up with about 6 for each of those 8 servings – a bargain for such a satisfying meal!

  258. Gina, you are amazing! Love your site and can't believe how much work you've put into it. Must really be a labor of love. 🙂

Just made this chili–delish!! But, when I measured the final quantity, I got only 12 cups total. Can't figure out why the quantity is so much less than yours. Any thoughts?

Thank you so very much. I've been back to WW for almost 5 months now and have lost 47lbs. Your recipes are so inspiring and enjoyable–I know they'll help me finally get to goal. Know how much we all appreciate you!!!!

It's been a while since I posted this, I think the error is I used Fl oz (a little over a cup) not weight which I realize is confusing. So, the serving size is 1 1/4 cups. Does that sound right?

  260. Hi Gina – this was my first recipe off your site and I must say, this recipe was DELISH!! However, I came up with 8 servings instead of 12 servings, which increased the pp+ 🙁 I even used my digital food scale to make sure each serving was 10.8.

  261. This was SO easy and tasty! Will make again, and again.

Thank you for all you put into this website. It's the best! Great Job!

Made this chili on Sunday. So delicious and so easy – thanks for sharing. Love your recipes!

  265. WONDERFUL! I have a tried and true less healthy chili recipe made with ground beef that my family and I love. I decided to try this. I had to use 2 cans of hot chili beans and 1 can of garbanzo's because I was out of black beans. I added 5 cloves of garlic while browning the turkey and onion. I served this over wheat rotini for the kids and I and my husband ate this straight up. We all LOVED this and actually thought it was just as good as our full fat version, if not better. WONDERFUL! I will definitely make this one again and again! Thank you Gina!

    1. You can get low sodium/no salt added beans at Walmart. Hunting for low salt recipes and I think this one will work.

    2. I am glad to see you are adding the sodium content. I have made several recipes from your website and tried to adjust the sodium as my husband is on a low sodium diet.

  266. This is so good! I made another pot and it's waiting for me at home in my crock pot – 5pm when I get off work can't come soon enough!! 🙂

  267. Do the chille's make this chili spicy? I prefer little to no spice so I usually leave chilles out of your recipes-they are still great dishes! Also not a fan of chickpeas-can I just add kidney or double black beans?

  268. Making this right now and can't wait to try it! I have LOVED every recipe from your site and can't thank you enough for all your hard work. I have lost 95 pounds on WW and your recipes have helped me SO much!

  269. I just made this recipe today and it is delicious! For those of you that like it spicy, try it with a can of Chipotles in adobo sauce with no preservatives; the taste is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! Added bonus, spicy food helps to speed up your metabolism!

  270. It sounds delicious! I am going to add a red and green pepper to bulk up on the "Free" veggies. I also drained the bean's..

You could just let it simmer covered on low heat in a big pot for about 2 hours. You may have too add more liquid so keep an eye on it.

  272. If I don't have a slow cooker, how could I do this just on the stove? Thank you so much for your wonderful recipes! All of my dinners come from your blog!

  273. Gina!!!!
Thank you so much just tried this recipe and loved it I made it last night and brought it to work with me. My family also loves it and it makes plenty so we have left overs. Thanks for posting such great food TWO THUMBS UP!!

  274. Hello Gina,

Is there any way you can calculate the points plus values for this recipe? It is a favorite at my house.

You can thank my brother for this one!! I love this recipe too, I make it often!! It's so easy.

  277. Gina,

I made this and LOVED it. I'm not a big bean person either. Next time I would take someone else's suggestion and puree half the beans, but that's just cause of my preference. I topped it with a little FF sour cream and my hubby added cheese to his and it was delicious!! My kids loved it too!! I've tried so many of your recipes and have to say that I haven't found one yet that I don't like!! Thanks for taking the time to post these amazing 'waist-friendly' meals for us people that need just a little help in the kitchen!! 🙂

  278. Gina,
I made this for the first time about a month ago. It now appears on my menu each week. It has just enough kick to it and is my favorite chili recipe. I love the fact that it keeps me on plan and tastes sooo good. I use the left overs on baked potatoes the next night. Thank you so much for all your recipes.

  279. I love this chili recipe! Putting the chopped onions and about a half an ounce of cheese on top really adds to the flavor. It's just me and my husband in the house so I gave my daughter some servings and she loved it as well. We had the leftovers two days later and it was even better the second time. This will be a new favorite! Thank you for all of your great recipes.

  280. Love your recipes! I've made the carrot cake, butternut squash risotto and now this. And Im only getting started! 🙂 however, I was just at trader joe's and grabbed the only ground turkey they had. Got back home and realized it had 16 g of fat! If I make it with that turkey will it be ok? Or should I venture out for fat free ground turkey? Thanks for all of your awesome recipes!!

Excellent! You could still eat most of the things you love, you just have to cook them differently. After a while it becomes second nature to you. Good luck!

  283. Hi there, I just found your site and cant beleive the awesome recipe's you have. And they are so easy and low in points!

I really didnt know if I would be able to lose my weight as I didnt know if I would find anything I would actually WANT to eat thats healthy! And now I feel so motivated just by your recipes!

Thank you so much and THANK god for you!!

  284. yeah, it doesnt reduce, and it was boiling over on to my counter top. i had to make a moat out of foil to catch the overflow. eh, ill leave it be and see how it tastes after the full 8 hours.

  285. Avatar photo
    Gina @ Skinnytaste

No, it really doesn't reduce much, so it sounds like your crock pot is smaller. The cover really needs to be on for crock pots to work, so I would take some out and maybe cook it another day or on the stove.

  286. i must have a small crock pot, this was over flowing by the time i put all the beans in. i couldnt even put the lid on, i had to make a foil "hat" for it. i hope it cooks right, does this reduce in volume as it cooks? if so maybe half way in i can put the top back on.

    1. I had the same problem! I need a bigger crock pot I guess. I just took some of the juices out (about a can full) so the lid would git back on it. Hope it turns out ok… 🙂

  287. I made this for a fun family get together this past weekend but since we're vegetarians, I skipped the turkey but added a half cup of Quinoa and a cup of water. Hearty and delicious! Thanks for the awesome recipes!

  288. Hi Gina,
I don't have a crock pot and wanted to know if this would work on the stove. Would I need to make any changes/substitutions?

Val- this is a very simple recipe! Perfect for beginners!

@Sheryl- Glad you liked it! It's almost chili season, can't wait to make chili and freeze leftovers for lunch!

  290. its wonderful to go to work and you know all day your crockpot is doing its thing for you. I had this for dinner tonight and we loved it! a visiting friend even asked me for the recipe. I didnt do so good on the chicken cordon bleu but this I can handle!

  291. This is the best chilli I have tasted. The aroma filled the house, teasing my husband and causing him to take several taste tests. He and his coworkers loved it. The toppings also really set it off!

@Michaela- I'm not a big fan of the texture of beans either, but they didn't really bother me in this after they were cooked. I would puree half the beans instead of all of them. Do it before you put them in the crock pot.

  294. I am curious about this recipe- however how could I do it if I were to puree the beans as I am not partial to the texture of whole beans? Would I puree the beans together before crock potting it, or after- just taking out the meat from the mix before I puree? Thank you for your wonderful recipes!!!

  295. There are small cans of tomato sauce, Hunts makes them as well as other brands. Here's an example: http://www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Meal-Planning/Tomato-Sauce/ID=prod1568208-product?V=G&ec=frgl_&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=sku1568197

  296. Hi Gina, this looks absolutely awesome!

Just wondering about the can of tomato sauce?

I know there's bottles of tomato sauce, and cans of tomato paste.. or cans of tomato soup?

  297. I am making this today, but, I didn't have chick peas so I used cannelini beans instead. Will this substitution change the points value?

  298. Yes, that's right. The longer the better but if after less time you taste it and are happy with the results, you could always shut it off. It won't hurt your turkey by cooking it longer, it's like simmering a meat sauce all day.

  299. Thanks!

  300. Made your Spinach Lasagna Rolls the other nite – they were great! My husband said they looked like I bought them in the store – looked just like your picture! I love getting all your recipes – have tried many of them and haven't tried one I didn't like! Keep them coming!

  301. That's ok! You can't brown meat in a crockpot. You want the turkey to be separated and browned into smaller bits. I would not recommend skipping this step.

  302. I'm new to cooking so forgive the dumb question.. but why does the turkey and onions have to be cooked first on a skillet? Wouldn't the crockpot cook it thoroughly in 8-12 hours?

  303. I have this in the crockpot right now and it will be done in 2 more hours….oh my, the aroma is delicious! The cleanup was SO easy and the house smells WONDERFUL right now!

    I love your recipes!!!

  304. I made this earlier in the week, and it was fabulous! My 2-year old LOVED it, and has eaten the leftovers all week long. Thank you so much for the recipe, and more importantly, the blog. I love coming here and getting ideas. Everything I've made has been amazing! Keep up the great work!!!

  305. lol ours didn't make it to the next day :-… but I am making it again tonight and doubling the recipe to ensure that it will last more than one night 🙂

  306. THIS WAS SOOO GOOD, I made it SuperBowl Sunday. It was SO delicious I can't get enough of it. I am planning on making it at least once a month now. There is a chili that we have in this town from a local donut shop that people drive MILES to get and I think it taste sooo much like that. It is GREAT! THANK YOU!

  307. Gina,

this recipe was so good even my 3 very picky kids loved it. Your recipes are wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing them with all of us. We have tried lots of recipes so far and my family especially loves the beef empanadas.

  308. Gina,

I am new to Weight Watchers. I tried this today and loved it! So did my picky toddler! I look forward to using more of your reecipes. Thank you!!

  309. Thank you Gina for all your hard work putting these recipes together!! It will make it so much easier to stick to my diet THIS TIME!! 🙂

  310. I agree, this is an awesome recipe. I have to thank my brother for this one. Not all recipes come out good in the crockpot but this one is amazing! I love that people won prizes with this!

    1. I am NOT surprised that people won prizes with any of your recipes. You are truly amazing and I am lucky and glad to have stumbled across your site about 2 years ago. I cook almost all of my recipes from your site. I know this is alot of work and I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart! Even my husband raves to friends and coworkers about the recipes I make from here. We love them all and YOU! Thank you Gina!

  311. I made this chili today and just had a bowl…FABULOUS..This will be my all time chili recipe..I had to come back and look at the recipe 3 times to make sure that it was only 3pts for a serving..tastes so rich and meaty. I followed the recipe exact adding a tablespoon of cumin and some red pepper flakes. Toppped with some WW shredded cheese for 2pts. Very filling meal for only 5pts. Thank you. Saturday I'm making your pasta fagoli..Can't wait.

  312. Jennifer, 8 oz.=1 cup, so 10.8 oz= Approx. 1 1/3 cup. I believe this is correct, this is how I measure out this recipe.

  313. Jennifer, if you figure 1 cup = 8oz then 10 oz would be 1 and 1/4 cups. At least, that's the logic I'd use…

  314. I am curious about the serving size, is the 10.8 oz weight? I think measuring that in a measuring cup would be difficult 🙂 Could someone let me know? Thank you

  315. This recipe was delicious! I also added fresh garlic to it. My fiance and I loved it- thank you so much for all of the wonderful recipes!

  316. I made this for a Christmas party this weekend and it was AMAZING! i added a clove of garlic and it was so tasty 🙂

Thank you again Gina for all of your amazing recipes!

  317. Gina….do they really sell fat free ground turkey breast? If so, what is it made out of? Surely there must be SOME fat in ground turkey to be real turkey, no? What does it taste like? The recipe sounds fabulous. I'll be making it with low fat ground turkey. Please let me know about this fat free product you refer to…

  318. Thanks Jennifer, Yes, it really is a lot of work. Rewarding when I get positive feedback. Thanks for your comment.

  319. My brother sent me the link to your blog last week, and this was the first recipe I tried. Fantastic!

I'm a busy person who loves to cook healthy, and try to avoid processed food as much a possible. Just browsing through your recipes, I can tell I will be coming back here often – and will be passing on the link to all my other busy friends. (I know that keeping up a site like this is a lot of work – so thanks for doing it!)

  320. I tried this recipe and my family loved it!! I browned my gorund beef the night before- the next morning got up and put everything together in the crock pot to let cook all day. Came home to a great meal!!!

    1. Me too.I used 1 tsp of chipotle chili powder, and 1 tsp of chili powder, some garlic and tossed in some cumin, maybe a tsp?

  321. I just made this and LOVED it! My son even enjoyed and it and was surprised that he like chili. Thanks for your great recipes 🙂

  322. I made this and entered into our annual Chili Cookoff at work-it won me 2nd prize out of 18 chili dishes! Its delicious!

  323. @Curry – knowing people are losing weight while making my dishes is so rewarding to me. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment, I love comments!!

    Curry & Gutierrez Family

This was my very first recipe I tried of yours and just loved it.

Let me say Gina that thanks to your recipes I have literally lost since August 14pounds. Of course I am on weight watchers but after a friend finding your site she told me how the whole process works and I have just fallen in love with your food. Let me say that even my hubby who loves food with flavor loves your recipes.

Thank you for inspiring me and please keep those recipes coming.

  325. I made this in my crock pot and it is DELICIOUS! I added a cup of whole wheat elbow macaroni to the mix. It makes a whole lot so I froze a lot of it (it's just me in the house). Thanks for the great website!

    1. Don't add elbow macaroni in until the very end. Mine totally dissolved and made the chili taste starch-y.

  326. This was excellent, I just added some fresh garlic, very satisfying, thank you so much for this website, I love trying your great recipes!
