Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps

Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps

This is my go-to turkey taco recipe. It's delicious and light – On nights I want to go low-carb, I forgo the taco shells and use lettuce wraps instead!

This is an oldie from the archives, but since I make this so often I thought I would update the photos just in time for taco Tuesday! It's naturally gluten-free, low-carb, and paleo & dairy-free without the cheese and sour cream. I find the outer leaves of Iceberg lettuce makes the best wraps, it's crisp and pliable and the leaves are large enough to make decent size wraps.

Turkey Taco Lettuce Wraps

Add your favorite taco fixins such as shredded cheddar, light sour cream, chives, black olives, jalapeno, tomatoes or whatever you like on your tacos. The portions are generous, and if you're kids want shells, you can easily bake a few for them and use the same filling.

Making your own taco seasoning is a healthier alternative to buying packaged taco seasoning, and uses less sodium, no sugar, no preservatives and no msg. It also saves you money if you are on a budget. If you prefer to use the package seasoning, simply replace it with the spices listed here.

  7. Thank you for your recipes! I got inspired by your site and joined WW this week. I made this recipe for my family tonight- and it was a hit! I didn't have any big lettuce leaves, so I served it on a bed of salad mix and crushed a few Trader Joe's low fat blue corn tortilla chips in (2 pts) to add extra crunch. Thanks for the seasoning mix too! Awesome recipe :-)

    ReplyDelete
  8. @ Natali, glad you liked it! I love Trader Joe's and love those blue chips! Great idea : ) Good luck with the weight loss!

  9. Loved this! Made this tonight -- whole family raved. No need for points-adding toppings!

  10. LOVE LOVE LOVE your site! We've made this three times in the last three weeks. I subbed taco seasoning for the spices, and used about half of both a red and green pepper. I also used Boston (aka butter) lettuce.

The next night, I mixed some leftover turkey mix with some whole wheat penne and it was delicious.

    Thanks for this excellent recipe!

  11. I made this last night. I used one large clove of garlic (minced) instead of powder garlic. I didn't have any bell pepper on hand so I tossed in about a tablespoon of diced green chilies.

I had some for lunch today. Both times I had it with romaine lettuce for my 'tacos.'

    Thanks!

  13. I just started WW and found your website tonight , I can't wait to make some of your receipes!!! Do you have a cookbook?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  14. We live on a limited budget and eat mostly venison. I have no idea what the point system is to adjust for that. Can you help me?

    ReplyDelete
  15. You're welcome Jana!

No, I don't have a cookbook. Hopefully I will someday.

3 oz venison is 3 points, 3 ounces turkey breast is 2 pts. I'm not sure how the venison would effect the points in this recipe, it will be a little higher.

  16. This taco seasoning is amazing!!! It will now be a staple in our house, no more taco packets!!

  17. Gina, I shared your white bean turkey chili at my WW work meeting. I have lost 56 pounds so far. I make the chili recipe once a week and take leftovers for lunch. Also I am a big QVC watcher, they you can come on there and share it on the Cook book corner on Sundays with David (one of the host).

  22. I was definitely skeptical of these, being that we are a family that loves tacos, but was beyond surprised by how good they ended up being. My husband and all 3 of my boys loved them! Even the youngest who usually doesn't want lettuce in anything. Imgaine that! These will definitely become a popular meal around our house. Thanks so much, Gina!

  23. I recently joined Weight Watchers and stumbled upon your site after Googling "weight watcher recipes". I made these last night and it was super yummy and my husband was in love with it too! I think next time I will use Boston lettuce, because i kinda ripped my romaine lettuce cups-haha! the other thing I wanted to ask you was do you drain out the juices when you serve? or do you serve the meat with all the juices? is it grease?

    ReplyDelete
  26. The juices dry up while they simmer, boston lettuce makes a great wrap!

  56. Love your recipes!. I was just wondering, when you say to add the meat mixture to the lettuce shelss it didn't mentione how much of the meat mixture you use in each. I realize of course when I make this (andI will be making it!) i can just put it all in a big measuring bowl and then divide it up into 8 servings, but I thought if you already knew..... Thanks again, my husband and I really love your recipes and our both on WW. Better yet our son loves them too and just got home for from his first year of college so I can't wait to try some more recipes out for him too.

Gina, I made these for dinner last night, did not have turkey since, where I live, turkey is only sold as a whole and not in small badges, so I made it with ground meat..It was incredibly delicious, healthy and light! 64. I just made this tonight...It was delicious! Thank you for posting it :-). I'll be making this one again for sure.

  65. OK, I need help- how do you manage to pull full leaves off of a head of iceberg lettuce without completely shredding them in the process? Every time I tried the leaf either tore in half, or the end product had little small tears throughout that would have made eating this as an actual wrap a complete mess.

Any tricks you can recommend? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Thank you again. We enjoyed this recipe. :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. BULK this recipe up with steamed, coarsely mashed CAULIFLOWER!! it's healthy, filling and you will never know it's there!

    ReplyDelete
  69. These were awesome!! Thanks again for the healthy recipes.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Found your recipe through google search as I had tacos on my mind after a workout. This is a fantastic variation to typical tacos, in fact I'll probably never go back to normal tacos. The seasoning was perfect, subbed in brown rice with the meat cause I'm currently training for a half marathon, but this is/will be a subbed in meal! Will definitely check your site out!

    ReplyDelete
  71. It looks delicious...Thanks for the wonderful recipe! I am going to try this one

  72. We have Taco Tuesday every week too! I usually buy the "mild" versions of the packaged seasoning mix b/c my kids don't like spice...in this case, does the cumin add spice along with the chili powder? What changes would you recommend to make the seasoning mild and kid-friendly?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Inspired!! :)

I think we're going to start having Taco Tuesday at our house. I love the idea of using lettuce instead of taco shells!

What a tasty low-carb meal idea! Thank you for sharing it! :)

  74. This sounds great. I'll have to try it. I like the idea of the lettuce wrap, but moreover I like the idea of seasoning the turkey without having to use an envelope of taco seasoning, but I would not have known what seasonings to use so thank you! I could also see putting this over a full salad to make a taco salad instead of a wrap. I can't wait to try it.

    ReplyDelete
  75. The idea of using lettuce instead of taco shells is brilliant! I'd add cilantro to the mix, but I know that's a matter of taste. Thanks for giving me a new idea for taco night!

  87. Made these tonight and they were so good! I wrapped them in Boston Bib lettuce and topped with avocado slices. I also made some Spanish rice on the side. What a yummy, healthy, and easy dinner! They will definitely be going into heavy rotation in my house!

  88. The whole family loved this one. We did put them in hard shells because that's all I had (no lettuce), but the meat was awesome!

  89. Hi, was wanting to try this but sodium seems high. I don't see where the numbers come from unless it's the tomato sauce and salt. Any ideas? Was thinking of using no salt added sauce and salt substitute or cutting salt in half.

  93. These are absolutely amazing and from now on Taco Nights are made with this recipe and put on homemade tortillas. I have a question though, I had to sub 97% lean ground turkey and I used an recipe analyzer to get the new calories and for some reason, mine says its only 195 calories per servings? I feel like I am missing something, is cheese included in the calories?

    ReplyDelete
  94. HI Gina,
I'm not on WW as the points confuse me but I have been on it in the past. I am eating a 90% plant based diet and 10% lean chicken and turkey (I don't eat fish anymore or beef, lamb or pork). These recipes are amazing and even I am going to try and make this taco recipe. Can you make this taco seasoning ahead and jar it up? I have a huge container of Lawrys taco seasoning but I would rather use homemade. I inherited the container from a friend that passed away. If I can make this is bulk I will give this container to my son! The main reason I am posting is to THANK you for making this site free for us poor working class amazing people. Thank you thank you thank you!! I found you via Erin Stutland. Thanks again! I just got a VITAMIX and I am too excited for words!! I am reading your smoothie recipes now.
