Sloppy Joe Recipe

I always have ground beef in my freezer, and one of the ground beef recipes I make all the time is this Sloppy Joe recipe. We love to serve it on potato rolls but I have also served it over baked potatoes, baked sweet potatoes and roasted spaghetti squash. I used lean ground sirloin and minced up some carrot, mushroom, bell pepper and onion for flavor and bulk. I mince them in the food processor so no one notices the veggies. For a slightly different on Sloppy Joes you may also like this Sloppy Joe Baked Sweet Potato which is also gluten free or Crock Pot Italian Sloppy Joes.

How To Make Sloppy Joes

I adapted this recipe from Rachel Ray’s Sloppy Joe recipe, which was a great place to start, as it was rated five stars with rave reviews. To make it a bit lighter I use lean ground beef and minced up veggies. Instead of brown sugar I used minced carrot for a little natural sweetness.

Ingredients

Using lean ground beef sirloin, veggies, and a flavorful sauce, this dish is sure to create a satisfying and filling meal. Here are the key ingredients you’ll need to make healthier Sloppy Joes:

  • Lean ground beef sirloin: Using lean beef sirloin helps to reduce the fat content of this dish without sacrificing flavor or protein. You can also use 93% lean ground turkey, if you prefer.
  • Steak seasoning or seasoned salt: This adds flavor and a bit of seasoning to the beef.
  • Vegetables: carrot, red bell pepper, mushrooms, onion and garlic all minced small.
  • Vinegar: Red wine vinegar adds a tangy flavor to the dish.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: Worcestershire sauce adds a tangy and slightly sweet flavor to the dish,
  • Tomato sauce: Canned tomato sauce serves as the base for the sauce that gives this dish its signature “sloppy” texture. It’s low in calories and high in vitamins and minerals like vitamin C, potassium, and lycopene.
  • Tomato paste: Tomato paste adds richness and depth of flavor to the sauce.

How to Eat a Sloppy Joe

The nutritional info for this sloppy joe filling is just for the meat. Below are some ideas for serving them.

  • Sandwich – Serve on a hamburger buns, whole wheat roll or potato roll, which is my family’s favorite way to eat them. Just make sure to have plenty of napkins on hand!
  • Sliders – If you’re feeding kids, use slider buns for a smaller sandwich.
  • Over Veggies – Make it gluten-free and serve it over baked potatoesbaked sweet potatoes, or roasted spaghetti squash.
  • Sides – serve them with a green salad, veggie sticks or baked potato chips.

How to Freeze Sloppy Joes

The meat will last in the fridge for up to four days and in the freezer for three months. To freeze, store in single-serving airtight containers. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat in the microwave.

Variations:

  • Swap the ground sirloin for ground turkey or bison.
  • If you don’t like mushrooms, feel free to skip them and add more bell pepper or carrot or grated zucchini. You really can’t taste them, though!
  • If you don’t have steak seasoning, you can add garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • To make it spicy, add some red pepper flakes to the beef.

  1. This recipe is one of my favorites and my family DEVOURS it. What I love about it is that it is not too sweet. Lots of Sloppy Joe recipes call for brown sugar and I find that too sweet. This one is perfect. I have been making this for years and we love it every single time. Gina, I love what you do!

  2. This is on regular rotation in our home! I double it and let simmer uncovered on low for several hours to get it to a nice thick consistency. Pour some over an oven roasted sweet potato…delish! A little shredded sharp cheddar takes it over the top if you have a few extra calories to use up. ♥️ thank you for this recipe!

*also really good on a bun with some mustard 😉

  3. My first time making sloppy Joe’s from scratch, will never use canned sauce again and no need to try any other recipes. Love the ease of mincing the veggies in the food processor.

  4. Amazing amazing!! A crowd favorite in my house. Been making this for years and it never fails!! I do use ground turkey instead of beef though.

  5. This was delicious! I didn’t have mushrooms so added extra red and green pepper and more carrots! I also used spicy steak seasoning to give it more zip. This paired nicely with air fryer sweet potatoes!

  6. This is a good way to get your veggies in your meal. It doesn’t taste much like the stuff you make with the package but that’s likely good because it’s healthier! I will freeze the leftovers for a quick meal in the future.

  7. One of my family’s favorite recipes! I love adding zucchini and mushrooms to bulk up the meat and hide veggies. Husband, 3 and 1 y/o approved. Thanks again Gina!

  8. This was fantastic! Husband had no idea all those veggies were in there. The flavor was so rich. Thanks again Gina!

  9. Family loved this! 9yo and 11yo approved. And great way to get a bunch of veggies in with ingredients we tend to have on hand. Also such a great comfort meal to kick off the cooler temps. Thanks!

  10. Wow, this recipe is FLAWLESS. So so good. Definitely going to keep this one on rotation- thanks, Gina!!!

  11. Made this for new mom and family.
It was a huge hit with the 21 month old.
I doubled it to freeze some.

  12. This was another really wonderful recipe! We really enjoyed it. I substituted ground turkey and it was still yummy.
One interesting note, I doubled it and 4 cups of tomato sauce made it a bit too soupy. Had to let it reduce. (Didn’t use the recipe doubler provided. That probably would have helped!)

  13. Love the “secret” veggies in this! It’s was flavorful and my husband (who hates veggies) even liked it!

  14. Great recipe! It tastes better than the canned stuff I ate as a kid, and I love all the hidden veggies. Delicious over a baked potato instead of a bun. 😋

  15. Wonderful! My family didn’t notice the veggies at all, and I liked the flavor more than traditional sloppy joes. Froze the leftovers and they heated up nicely for another meal.

  16. My husband dreaded hearing I would be cooking healthier meals but after this one he said he never knew eating healthier could taste so good! Didn’t even taste the veggies!

  17. Can we change the color of the pepper? Since there’s some stomach issues with the red pepper in our family?

  18. Forget about the canned sloppy joes sauce. Leave all the sugar & unnatural natural flavors behind. This is delicious! You can hide any veggies you have in there with the carrots. My only advice is if you are making this for a family of young adults, be sure to double the recipe or everyone will be looking for more. Another winner!

  19. We made this for dinner tonight. I left out the vinegar because my wife hates vinegar. My wife loved the dish! We will definitely have it again

  20. very tasty! I doubled the recipe and used ground turkey. Used a bit less tomato sauce and also added a bit of crushed red pepper, along with some additional chopped fresh peppers.

  21. Delicious! Made this regular version along with a vegetarian version for my daughter. Traded out the beef for the non beef crumbles. It was a hit with everyone.

  22. Loved this recipe and honestly almost every recipe of yours I have tried! Thank you for making healthy eating taste so good!!

  23. These are great to make ahead and keep warm in the slow cooker to serve. Loaded with veggies and so fast with the chopper. But serve them in HOT DOG BUNS. A restaurant we grew up near always served them this way and called them grub burgers. It’s easier to keep the meat in the bun. 👍

  24. This was the best sloppy Joe I have ever had, I will never buy canned sloppy Joe again…………

Hubby asked for canned manwich for dinner tonight, he came home to Turkey Sloppy Joes! I use ground turkey for a healthier dinner. Like you, I will never buy the can again. This is a repeat in our house. Everyone loves it.

  25. Made this for tonight’s dinner and my 14 year old grandson had no idea how much veggies there was in it and he LOVED it! Will definitely make it again.

  26. I enjoy this and make a couple modifications. I just dice the veggies and cook before the meat, no carrots for me. I use ground chicken, and I add a little brown sugar which makes it more sloppy Joe like. Yummy!

  27. I think the carrot flavor just threw me off. It wasn’t the worse taste thing ever, but I think leaving out the carrots would make these better.

  28. Oh wow!  Made this today because I was trying to get back on track.  This is so much better than my old system of canned Sloppy Joe.  This was easy to make and very   tasteful.  I can’t wait to use the leftovers up later.

  29. Probably a dumb question, BUT by “tomato sauce” do you mean jar of spaghetti sauce,.like Prego or Ragu?

  30. I put this into butter lettuce for sloppy Joe wraps for lunch and it was delicious!! Keeper for sure!

  31. These were delicious!
I never liked sloppy joes growing up but this recipe was a real hit. My husband and 5 year old enjoyed them too.
More nutritious than classic sloppy joe recipes, and more satisfying with the increased fiber from the vegetables.
    Will made these again!

How would I make this in the crock pot? I’m thinking it would be easier for feeding a large group.

  33. I really liked this recipe, my only feedback was they were a little too sloppy lol. Completely made the bottom bun soggy after 1 minute. I would make again but with 1 cup of tomato sauce and had the extra to taste.

  34. Talking about a quick dinner and good! Loaded with mushrooms, carrots,  red peppers and onions! Great quick weeknight meal!  We put it over sweet potatoes and it was a hit! My daughter, who doesn’t like mushrooms, couldn’t even tell they were in there.
Definitely a thumbs up dinner. Serve it with a salad and dinner is ready! The hardest part of this recipe is limiting yourself to a 1/2 cup of the sloppy Joe mixture!:)

  35. Delicious! Comes together really fast. Served over rice. Savory and satisfying. Love connecting your recipes immediately to my ww pp!

  36. I’ve been making this for awhile and love it! I use 93% FF ground turkey and let the moisture cook out so it’s not too soggy to pick up and eat. Also, the buns I use are only big enough for 1/3 cup of the mixture, so I get 10 servings out of the recipe.

  37. Loved the recipe! Thank you for sharing this! Personally I’m in favour of salty and sour flavours. I found some ingredients on  Tesco, and few from https://dietly.co

Let me know if you have fav place, like local shops!

  38. This has been a longtime favorite in our house. So delicious and good on anything! When I worked in a place that had a traditional cafeteria I would top my salad with this (:

  39. This recipe is a keeper! I subbed in turkey for the ground beef and added a tablespoon of brown sugar. One bite and I was transported back to my 1970s childhood kitchen! My whole family enjoyed their sloppy joes on gluten free toasted rolls. Thanks for another great recipe!

  41. Love the sloppy joes baked sweet potato recipe and this looks similar so I definitely need to try it. The fact that these aren’t made with ketchup and a bunch of sugar is the selling point! I love that the carrot and red pepper adds a bit of sweetness. My kids have been asking to try sloppy joes and this would be the only recipe I’ll make for them. The added veggies is quite the bonus!!!

  42. This is always a favorite at my house! I always double or triple the recipe and freeze for quick weeknight meals. I love all the hidden veggies… my kids don’t even know they are there.

  43. I made this recipe for my family last night, and it was SO GOOD! I’m not a huge fan of condiments, so things with Ketchup & Mustard in it is just icky to me. I loved that this had real ingredients in it and NO SUGAR! The hidden veggies are great. I took the meat mix and mixed it with some egg noodles for my 21 month old and he LOVED it! This is a new family favorite!

  44. We added a tablespoon of mustard at the end and it tastes just like the sloppy joes my mom used to make! Thanks for this veggie forward version!

  45. I normally adore skinny taste recipes, but this one missed the Mark. It definitely doesn’t compare to the classic recipe. I followed exactly as stated and the salt flavor came through strong, so I’d recommend lessening. This recipe is very savory with all of the vegetables coming through. Maybe just needs a tinge of sweetness.

  46. I have used this recipe for YEARS & my family loves it! Any chance you have instructions for the instant pot? It’s baseball season it would be perfect for practice nights.

  47. This will definitely be on regular rotation! It was so yummy!  I actually omitted the mushrooms, the bell pepper, and the carrots because we just don’t like them. It has a little kick to it! It was so good!!

  48. Made this last night for dinner and it was delicious. Lunch today is leftover Sloppy Joe over 1 point french fries! Delicious!

  49. I’ve made this recipe several times and it’s always delicious!  I’ll usually use ground turkey instead of beef. It’s a great way to sneak in some veggies for those picky eaters!

  50. Love this recipe I make it all the time!!  So tasty my hubby at it over pasta
tonight!!  I leave the mushrooms out as I cannot eat them and add more onion and carrots.

  51. My wife loved this. I used venison instead of beef. I thought it was a really good change up from my usual not so healthy recipe. We have also decided to chop the mushrooms instead of mincing them. I will definitely make it again. Considering swapping out the red wine vinegar for balsamic. Thanks for the recipe.

  52. This was SO GOOD!! I added some salt and about a tablespoon of brown sugar and it was perfect. I love all the veggies mixed in!! Will def make this again!

So excited! The kids had no idea what was in their sloppy Joe’s! They loved them! This recipe is a keeper!

  54. Thank you for sharing this delicious recipe!  It was a hit at my house.  My husband kept going back for more!

  55. what about that crusty whole wheat roll? sounds wonderful but doesn’t it change everything on WW? Thanks..

    1. You would need to add those points in.  There are probably too many calorie ranges for bread to be added.  I don’t use bread. I place the sloppy joe mix on Zoodles or butternut squash noodles.

  56. So delicious! My husband and my toddler both ate all of theirs and wanted seconds. This is delicious and classic. Yummy!

  57. It’s great base recipe for a healthy sloppy joe but it needs more flavor! I used ground turkey 1/2Tbsp seasoning salt, drained the liquid, then added a 1/2Tbsp more seasoning salt. I added cracked pepper, used one can of chopped tomatoes (2 cups seems like too much liquid!), and added about 2 tbsp of honey to sweeten it up because sloppy joes are meant to be sweet! Super easy to make when you throw the veggies in the food processor. And I suggest tasting as you go to ensure you get the flavor just right for you.

  58. Family favorite for game night at our house. They are going to be served up again this Saturday! Thanks!

  59. This is one of my family’s favorite recipes! My kids like to spread some laughing cow cheese on the bun then pile the sloppy joe on top.

    1. Wonderful recipe, thank you! I reached for my Rachel Ray recipe and nearly cried looking at the added sugar. I’m on Weight Watchers and wanted a simple tasty recipe for the family. This one was a hit and one I’ll keep in rotation. The sweetness from the carrots was more than enough. Seasoning is a personal preference, so you’ll need to make this your own. Other than changing the seasoning, I cooked and followed the recipe. It’s perfect!

  60. Excellent recipe. 3/4 of my family love it! Still tasted great and flavorful out of the freezer. Yum!!

    Thanks for sharing Gina!

  61. I love this, I add beans because I like it like that but totally not necessary….I eat on a 647 low carb bun….

  62. Love this recipe, make it several times a year. Always add mustard, cuz that’s how I roll.
Thanks for all of your recipes, I never would have made it to lifetime and stayed there without all the variety you have placed at my finger tips. (Have purchased cookbooks as well ?)

  63. Loved this recipe! How clever to use carrot and red pepper to replace the sweetness of ketchup or brown sugar. I honestly wouldn’t change a thing when I make it again! I will say that I did simmer it uncovered (I don’t have a lid for my large skillet) and I simmered it for more like 15 minutes which really helped thicken it.

  64. I did not care for this recipe. Normal sloppy joes are made with some sugar (ketchup). I missed the sweet.

  65. This recipe is amazing! So easy and full of flavor. I will be making this A LOT. Thanks Gina! You are the best!

This is a family favorite! I usually make it with lean ground turkey and my only other change is to add 1tbls of brown sugar. Its so so much better than the Sloppy Joes of my youth!!! I throw all the veggies in a processor to mince finely and my non mushroom eating family is none the wiser. Im making this tonight and my mouth is already watering thinking about it. We always have it with sweet potato fries and airfryer roasted cauliflower florets.
Thanks for another win in my house, Gina!

  67. When I put this into the WW app, it comes out to 4 pts. Per serving, not 2.  Also your nutrition information is different from WW .  I tried to calculate it with your nutrition info but you haven’t given any values for saturated fats or sugars which are needed by the app.  I love this recipe but I’m so disappointed to find out that the points are double what I thought they were!

  68. This is fabulous just as written. My girls devour it and ask for it. I eat mine over rice or quinoa to eliminate the bun but they love it on buns.  SO much healthier and less sweet than traditional sloppy joes.

  69. Love this recipe! I did change one thing for our taste and that was in place of one of the cups of tomato sauce I used G. Hughes sugar free BBQ sauce. awesome! and didn’t change the points! Thanks for all your recipe’s !

  70. A little different than the sloppy joes I’m used to, but I used lean ground turkey instead of beef and was amazed that it all came up as 0 points per 7 servings. It was completely devoured by all of the picky eaters who don’t eat vegetables in my house, including a 6 year old. I wrapped mine in a Romaine lettuce leaf with some black bean and corn salad on top, all 0 points. I’m in love with this recipe and will definitely make it again soon. A food processor is needed to chop the vegetables up really fine.

  71. Great recipe. The only change I made was adding shredded suchinni and carrots.  Very flavourful and well received by all in my house.

Absolutely fabulous! I added half a cup of unsweetened applesauce to make it a little bit sweeter. Everybody loved it. I had a large group over. I love how there are hidden vegetables in it. Made it ahead and warmed it in the crockpot this morning. I think it became even more tender in the crockpot

  74. I liked this but found it SO salty. I used the seasoned salt rec’d since I didn’t have steak seasoning. Next time I would try a teaspoon instead of a tablespoon. I might even try 1/2 T of both the vinegar and worcestershire next time to start and add more if needed. I did feel the need to add some mustard in the end for flavor, but I always like mustard with my sloppy joes. I had made the rest of the family their favorite version in case this did not turn out well. I am glad, because they would not have eaten with this with the salty flavor. I think next time with the tweaks they would like it though. I used 0pt extra lean ground turkey and liked it with that. The sauce was a bit liquidy, but using a slotted spoon helps.

  75. I have made this recipe three or four times. My husband and I really like it. It reminds me of the recipe my mother used to make, which I love. I will definitely makes this again.

  76. I enjoyed this recipe but I did feel the need to add more steak seasoning, a couple tablespoons of barbecue sauce, and a tablespoon of brown sugar, which didn’t slam the calorie count between all of those servings. Over all a wonderful recipe & I can’t wait to add this into my regular dinner rotation. Nice that the veggies blend in so well.

  79. I made this using ground beef and I also made a leaner version using ground turkey. They both turned out amazing. I pour it over a sweet potato since I follow a mostly paleo diet. Great recipe!

  80. I’ve made this twice and it doesn’t come out right. It’s pretty good, but not  like a sloppy joe. I used a food processor the second time to see if that was the problem but no luck. I’ve made about 100 Skinnytaste recipes in the past 3 years and they’re always amazing, I think the only problem with this one is expecting it to taste like the manwhich canned sauce. Again, I liked it, but my boyfriend was disappointed it didn’t taste like he expected. Still love Skinnytaste and recommend it to everyone that wants to eat healthier.

  81. made this for dinner tonight my 11 year old son loved so did I. Thank you for always having delishes and healthy recipes.

  84. If I wanted to cook this in the crock pot instead of on the stove, what changes would you make? Thanks!

  85. Pretty good, but needs tweaks. Followed recipe to the letter, but my ‘sauce’ was really more of a thin juice. I tried reducing for longer, and still way too thin. I finally added some panko breadcrumbs to soak up the juice and that worked fantastically. Also, the vinegar was a bit strong, next time I’ll add half that amount. Overall, it still tasted pretty great, and I would make it again with my edits.

  86. This is the only recipe of yours I have made and not loved. My original recipe is much better. This is too tomato-y and I like my Sloppy Joes with a little sweetness. Won’t make this again. Disappointed.

My husband made this tonight for dinner (minus mushrooms because we don’t care for them). It was so good! Can’t wait for the leftovers in my lunch! However, when I put the recipe into the WW site recipe creator, it came up with 4 points. Still worth it, but not the two this recipe says.

  88. I just made this tonight using ground turkey and it was awesome! I did add a bit of brown sugar to sweeten it up for my picky husband and toddler. They both loved it. My toddler had 2 helpings and that is a big deal since she won’t eat any meat besides a hotdog. Thank you!

  89. Do you not drain the fat out before adding veggies? Also I’m wondering if it would be the same with ground turkey…

As is, it tasted like pasta sauce to me. Not sweet enough… so I kept adding to it until I got the classic sloppy joe flavor. I used 1 tbsp of BBQ sauce, 1 tbsp brown sugar and a teaspoon of yellow mustard. MUCH better!

  93. I added an extra carrot and doubled the bell pepper to bump up the sweetness and veggies. I also make it with ground turkey sometimes and it works just as well. It's a great recipe! My husband, a die-hard, canned Manwich sloppy joe guy, is sold on these now. That's a big compliment. I make a bunch and freeze portions for later. I also want to try added some spice and heat and beans andI added an extra carrot and doubled the bell pepper to bump up the sweetness and veggies. It's a great recipe! 94. Made this recipe vegetarian with cooked dry lentils, (from 1 1/2 cup dried lentils). I didn't have steak seasoning, so I made my own using chili powder, paprika, ground cumin, and cayenne pepper. So much deliciousness for so few WW points!!

  95. This recipe is great! I made this last night and the only change I made was I used 1/2 a Vidalia onion vs. a whole onion, mainly because onion causes severe heartburn for my husband. The whole family loved it, even the 5 year old and 2 year old! This is the way I'll be making my sloppy joes from now on, thank you!!!

  96. Just wonderful! I have not made a recipe from your site that I have not enjoyed! We did make a couple of minor tweeks using turkey, extra veggies, red pepper flakes and a bit of mustard. We will definitely be making this again. I had a hard time not helping myself to seconds!

  97. Excellent! Thanks Gina. Even my kids loved this recipe- they did not notice vegetables had been added. Will make again.

Ok I am new at this calorie counting I didnt have everything listed, I had turkey 85/15% baby carrots probably used 6 to12, apple cidar vinegar, tomato sauce and paste, worcestershire sauce, potabella mushroom, onion and garlic. Would this be close to the same caloies?

  99. The original Rachael Ray sloppy joe that this comes from is by far, my most favorite sloppy joe recipe ever. THANK YOU so much for making it healthier! I loved bulking it up with the veggies, but getting the same great taste. Another winner!

  100. We have made this a lot. Love it. Before I have always chopped the veggies. Tonight I immersion blended them. Totally changes the dish. . . We also tried adding some mustard powder and a tablespoon or two of BBQ sauce. It is good also. I used 99% lean ground turkey.

  101. Where are people finding 1 Points Plus light buns? The lowest I can find is a 2 Points Plus light bun. Perhaps they were 1 Point on the old WW program and are now 2 Points Plus? Looking forward to trying this great recipe!

  103. I hate recipes that use ketchup or store-bought bbq sauce. Why does everyone want food sweet? This is very much like my recipe. I like to use leftover pulled pork and a lot of hot pepper flakes and/or hot sauce. Leftover chicken shredded is good too!

  104. Being from the UK Sloppy Joes is not something I have ever had or made. Moved to Canada 5 years ago got married. Motherinlaw does a version but never tried it. Have been trying various recipes here recently and this got the best review from the hubby (better than his Mum's – you cant really get a better review from a husband than that lol). As an aside my sons fave were the buttermilk chocolate chip scones! I don't need the sweetness having never had sweeter ones before. Love the amount of veg in it. DH loved that it didn't just taste of spaghetti sauce. Thanks for the keeper!

  106. I made this last night and both my boyfriend and I loved it. Only change I made was added a little more Worcestershire sauce and added a teaspoon of brown sugar at the very end. So good, makes a TON and keeps you full. Will definitely be making this again!

  107. So delicious! Made this the other night and my husband and I loved it! Followed the recipe and added a little brown sugar as some others have suggested to give it that slightly sweet and savory flavor. This will be going into the rotation. Thanks! : )

  108. We made this tonight with kangaroo meat and it was great! I know it sounds strange, but kangaroo is super healthy and I love the flavor.

  109. I made this last night for the first time. My husband went for seconds, didn't even know it was healthy! I made mine with turkey cayenne pepper for some spice. We are having leftovers tonight for sure!! Thank you for this amazing recipe.

  110. I made these for the second time last night. They are so good. I paired it with your skinny potato salad (like Rachel Ray does) and dinner was fantastic. I doubled the batch so that I can freeze some for lunches. I read a neat trick of putting the leftovers in a muffin tin and freezing. Then you can transfer to a freezer back when frozen. One tin equals one sandwich. 🙂

  111. Oh my goodness! Delicious! My hubby and daughter ate theirs on a potato roll and I had mine on an Arnold whole wheat sandwich thin with spinach. They both loved them! I told my daughter what was in it and she ( who hates mushrooms) told me to make it again.

    Thank you!

  112. College student review:
This recipe was cheap, easy and quick. Not only that, but it turned out better than I expected! I added a little bit of brown sugar just because of what other people said. Use white wine vinegar instead of red and a green pepper vs red due to what was on hand. All on some rye break

Thank you for yet another good recipe!!

  113. Gina, you are amazing… Thank you for your dedication and hard work!! And Imagination!! 😉

I was wanting to clarify 'tomato sauce'…. canned pasta sauce? crushed tomatoes? ketchup? I just want to make sure I go with the right one to stick to your values 🙂 Thank you again!

  114. Gina – I see many have opted to use ground turkey vs. the beef – would the WW points be the same? Looks awesome and a great comfort food during these winter months! LOVE your site – keep up the great work and kudos for your recognition for the awesome work you offer and great WW recipes

  115. This recipe is also considered Simply Filling for WW as long as you use organic tomato paste! Love that I can have this and a light hamburger roll until I am satisfied! Keep up the great work!

  116. Made this tonight and it exceeded my expectations. If you use afood processor, you can't tell there are veggies in it. My 3 year old gobbled it down!

  117. Made this last night! It was so good! I used ground turkey and added some pepper (I love pepper) and it turned out amazing! I put my half cup serving on a slice of 35 cal wheat bread

  118. We are big fans of a sloppy joe in this house. I tweaked the recipe a bit and everyone enjoyed it! I used a package of ground chicken , two carrots, a zucchini, a package of sliced mushrooms, a small onion, and a bell pepper ( all minced in the food processor.). I added all the same seasoning as the above but also added two packets of Splenda. It was the perfect combination of sweet and tangy. The kiddies had no idea I slipped them all those veggies either.

I dont know. Usually I love your recipes that i've tried on here, but i'm unsure about this one. I think sloppy joes should be more… bbq-y. This one tasted like more of a meat sauce to be served over pasta. I'm disappointed. I'm a 22 year old poor college student and I cook two meals for myself and my boyfriend to last the entire week, now I feel like we have a bunk meal to deal with for the rest of the week. I had to add bbq sauce and sriracha just to make it taste like an actual sloppy joe and now it's just like .. what was the point, it's not healthy anymore. Ugh.

    1. Do you have a crockpot? If so, get a chuck roast and buy the BBQ Pulled Pork Slow Cooker packet. It makes a whole lot of bbq beef for only 5pp per 1/4cp…and it lasts the week. Might be a more affordable alternative.

  120. Trying this for dinner tonight. I am cooking for my very picky father so we will see if this gets his approval.

  121. This is our favorite sloppy joe recipe! I love that its packed with veggies. I throw a zucchini into the mix. Makes for a super colorful dish 🙂 Thanks Gina!

  122. This is amazing!!! I used extra lean turkey and added a tablespoon of brown sugar to the sauce. Thanks!!! 🙂

  123. Thank you SO much for this wonderful site! I get so many recipes from here and it has been immensely helpful in meal planning and helping me stick to plan. The hardest part for me is meal ideas, and your blog is a goldmine! I really really appreciate all the hard work you do! Made these sloppy joes tonight, and they were wonderful! Will add them to our menu rotation just as many other of your recipes have been! Thanks so much!

  124. This recipe was amazing. I was kind of hesitant since I dont like the can or the mixes for sloppy joes, maybe because I dont like the sweetness of the can or mix. I did not add the carrots which I read later was for the sweetness to subsitute for the suger. I am glad I skipped that ingred. b/c this was amazing, it will now be part of our monthly dinner menu!! Thank you

  125. All I can say is WOW! I made this last night for my wife and I and she wanted a 2nd serving. I'm not a fan of mushrooms, so I omitted those but I added a tsp of chili powder to give it just a little more flavor. This was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend this to anyone looking to make healthy Sloppy Joes for themselves or the family.

  126. This recipe is absolutely fantastic. I don't know that I've ever had a Sloppy Joe, but these are incredibly tasty and tangy. And what a generous portion for so few points! Thanks once again, Gina!

  127. made these last night and then had another for breakfast! 🙂 they were sooo good and it made me feel so happy adding in all those veggies. my hubby doesnt like sloppy joes or tomatoes so they werent his favorite and i added the 2tbsp of brown sugar to hide the tomato flavor. but i'll definitely be making these for myself for to pack for lunch!

This recipe is amazing. I just made it with a few substitutions but nonetheless my fiancee and i loved it.

  129. These were awesome. Though, I didn't follow the directions.. but only b/c I know I bought a big can of tomato sauce, but I couldn't find it when I went to make these. So I'm guessing it's either in the husbands truck or left at the store 🙁 so I decided to use some ketchup (I had a small amt of sauce), well I ran out of ketchup, so I improvised with bbq sauce! And used the last bit in that bottle to finish! They were great. I'm sure way more points than if I'd have used that sauce. Next time I will make them by the directions…. hopefully that can of tomato sauce won't elude me.

Made this tonight and it was great! I didn't have carrots or red wine vinegar though so I substituted with a little apple cider vinegar for the vinegar and a little sweet for the carrots. We also put spoonfuls on little dinner rolls and made "sliders". Definitely will do again!

  131. This is one ofmy favorites from this site. I don't like mushrooms so I add rated zucchini and a couple of slashes or beef broth instead or Worcesteshire. Sooooo good!

  132. Just made these with your cornbread casserole and they were delicious. Want to try adding some shredded zucchini next time like other reviewers have suggested. I love your site!

  133. THIS WAS EXCELLENT!! My 8 year old loves sloppy joe's and I am always trying to cook healthy nutritious meals. HUGE hit, not only did I love it, my 8 year old loved it said is was the best she had ever had 🙂 and my 2 year old asked for seconds. THANK YOU!!! Only thing I did different was a used a no added sodium tomato paste and sauce and a low sodium steak seasoning.

  134. This was amazing. My wife made this last night and I had to just jump on the website and say thanks!

We have tried a number of recipes on here and they were all very tasty. thanks!

  135. I'm trying this recipe tonight w/ ground turkey thighs, can't wait. From the reviews, it sounds very yummy!!

  136. I am not a sloppy joe fan, but my husband is. I made these last night and I loved them. My husband (who is a landscape foreman – crazy hours – heavy duty work) ate 4 sandwiches in one sitting – I think it's safe to say that he liked them. Of course he can get away with it since he's the tall and thin built – can eat whatever he wants and still lose weight. I don't know what we'll do if we ever have kids – he'll never leave enough food for them! Thanks for a wonderful meal!

  137. Hi Gina. I just wanted to give you a BIG KUDOS for this recipe. Made it tonight with ground turkey and this is BY FAR the best sloppy joe recipe Ive EVER HAD!!!! Delicious!!! Thanks for sharing your passion with all of us!

  138. Gina–made this tonight for dinner because we wanted something different. And it was FABULOUS!!! This was such a good and easy meal everyone enjoyed with the enjoyment of leftovers tomorrow!!! 🙂

  139. Gina -I wanted to let you know this is one of our family's all-time favorite meals now, and we have been having it at least every other week for these cold winter months! Every time I make it, my husband sits down, takes his first bite, breathes a sigh of pleasure, and his eyes light up. I know how he feels because I'm sure mine do too! I have never before liked sloppy joes but they were always the ketchup-laden kind I'd had, I suppose. My two year old gobbles it up and my 10 month old cries for more. Comfort food that couldn't get better – or better for you! Thanks for all your great recipes!

  140. I just made this recipe– I am used to a less healthy version, with ketchup but I honestly could not tell the difference.I used one whole onion and green pepper as veggies and added a tbsp of brown sugar. I served it over rigatoni and it was great! I live by myself so had some for dinner and bringing the rest to work for lunch- YUM!!

  141. I made this tonight but poured the serving over 1/2 baked potato with fresh green onions, low fat cheese and jalapeños. Soo good!

  142. My husband is a Sloppy Joe snob. I was nervous about this one. SO GOOD! I actually made it with 96% lean beef (b/c that's what I had on hand) and it was still delicious. I made dinner start to finish in 25 mins!

I followed the recipe exactly! I decided to make it and then throw it in the crock pot for when I get home today, but I just tried a little bite when it was done cooking on the stove and WOWOWOWOWOW. My fiancee just tried a bite, and he gives it an "8 of 10" and he "can't really taste the veggies" (which is a good thing for him) and when I ask him what made it an "8" instead of a "10", he said "it's not as beastly as other sloppy joes, it could be a little more saucy" whatever that means LMAO, but it is definitely a hit.

  144. I followed the recipe exactly and it was delicious. I was tempted to add mustard because I use it in my normal recipe but I didn't, and I didn't miss it. It was a hit with my family. I served it on 100 calorie flat buns. I will be making this one again…soon!

  145. I followed this recipe to the letter but did not have tomato paste. It was terrible. Could the paste have made that big of a difference??? It was so bitter that I had to add brown sugar, honey and bbq sauce just to make it palatable. Of course that had to have added 100's of calories so it was skinny no more. This one will not go in my recipe box!

    1. I would think tomato paste would have a huge effect on taste.  It’s concentrated so it would have a lot of flavor.

    2. It always cracks me up when someone writes i followed the recipe exactly EXCEPT… And then goes on to blast the recipe for how bad it is!!! Seriously this is now one of our favorite recipes. It is delicious AND healthy. We love it. Thanks for sharing it.

This recipe looks great! So are you saying you started with 1.25 lbs raw meat or you cooked the meat and ended up with 1.25 lbs? If the latter is is the case, how much raw meat did you start with?
Thanks! Can't wait to make it 🙂

  148. Another fantastic Skinny Taste creation! My children didn't recognize all the veggies nor did my husband and they all went back for seconds. YUM!!!

I made this last night along with the Low Fat Baked Onion Rings. I know you have so many people telling you how amazing your recipes are, but I have to tell you as well! My 2 year old- who typically has no interest in eating, cleaned his plate! My husband (a HUGE Sloppy Joe and Onion Ring connoisseur)raved about them both. He said and I quote: "These sloppy joe's are incredible! Much better than that junk in a can!" Ha! So, five stars from our family. You have had us eating well this whole week–most to which my husband said you would think you got 5 star restaurant! Thanks again, you're the best!

  150. Amazing recipe (as usual)…made this for the hubby last night and we both absolutely loved them! We put our mixture on soft potato rolls…so good!

  151. Delicious! Slight modifications – 90/10% grnd beef rather than 93/7% b/c that's what store had; Used 1 tbspn Lawry's Seasoned Salt + 1 tspn salt free McCormick's Grill Mates Steak Seasoning; because we like it sweet, added 1 tbspn brown sugar. Ends up 5 pts per 1/2 cup serving – made exactly 7 servings. Hope to find 93/7% next time and bring down points a bit.

My son, husband, and I loved these! My daughter wasn't a fan (she is resistant to new things) but a little extra catsup and she was fine. I can't believe they didn't cotton on to the hidden veggies, that is genius! Thanks for all the recipes, Gina. I have pumpkin chili made for lunches this week, and at least 3 main and side dishes are on the menu for the week. WW is certainly easier now that I have found your blog!!!

  153. I used a can of tomato soup instead of the tomato sauce and omitted the red wine vinegar (because I didn't have any) and it was a HUGE hit at the dinner table. Especially with my picky husband.

Thanks for all the great recipes – they are sooo delicious 🙂

I will be honest and say that I hate traditional sloppy joes. I hate everything about them, and have since I was a kid. My husband always wanted me to make them, but I flat refused. YUCK! Until now….

I realized the other night that I didn't have ALL ingredients for any of the recipes I had planned to make. My friend told me about this site, so I decided to have a look.. As I was going through, I saw the Skinny Sloppy Joe recipe and couldn't help but wonder what was in it. After reading the ingredients, I realized #1 I had all of the ingredients for it and #2 the recipe didn't sound like traditional sloppy joes. Why not try it, right? Right.

Oh wow! It was so good! It's spicy and… magic in my mouth. I was completely shocked at how good it was (and spicy!) NOTHING like traditional sloppy joes, other than it being sloppy 🙂 Definitely a keeper. My husband is a happy man.

*Next time, I think I'm going to throw a zucchini into the mix and see how that goes.

I'm sure it is leaner than beef, you'll have to check the n.i. to see how that effects the points.

  157. I used groung chicken breast. Would you know if the makes this recipe leaner or 'skinnier' ? I dont know much about groung chicken but at the store they ran out of turkey so is was my last choice?

  158. I've been following your blog for quite some time now and LOVE it! I recently started my own healthy recipe blog to help my clients (I'm a nutrition/health/fitness coach) and I am happy to report, and wanted to let you know, that I'll be featuring this very recipe tomorrow on my blog (www.mimisfitfoods.com). My husband and I loved it and I think several of my readers will too! Thanks for sharing!

Good to know! I don't care too much for sweet food, but I bet some mustard would be nice!

  160. Hi Everyone! We are huge Skinny Taste fans at our house and one comfort food we love is sloppy joes. We found this to be a little sweet so we were surprised that people added sugar, although to be fair in my mom's recipe she added brown sugar. I'm not sure if adding mustard is a mid-west thing, but my family thought it lacked the balance of flavors we were used to so we added yellow mustard. I HIGHLY suggest you try it that way! What a difference! Soooo yummy 🙂

  161. Hi Gina! This is actually the third or fourth time I've made these skinny sloppy joes. I used to LOVE Rachael Ray's recipe, but I actually found that I PREFER your remake with all the added veggies to the original version! It adds an extra depth of flavor, not to mention so much healthier. The only thing I do different is use zucchini instead of mushrooms (I can't stand them), and add a packet of Splenda for a little extra sweetness. Served on a 1-point bun, even my hubby loves them and requests them often!

  162. I made this for dinner tonight – so yummy!! I've never had a sweet sloppy joe, so for us, this is perfect as is.

  164. Gina, have I mentioned that you are amazing?? I love sooo many of your recipes. I have been cooking your foods for months..I just joined WW this week. I'm even more inspired to cook than ever before! This was great!!

  165. I dont normally enjoy sloppy joes, but my husband LOVES them, so I caved and made this. And I am now a sloppy joes fan!!! And my husband gave it an A+. So far, he has rated all of your recipes as EXCELLENT. And he usually gives my cooking a "yeah, it was okay". YAY

  166. I swear… I get hungry just looking at your recipes. Sloppy Joes for us for supper tonight. Is it supper time yet? Thanks again and again, Gina.

  167. Hey Gina, I wanted to let you know that my fiance says no where in the directions does it say when to add in the garlic 🙂

  171. these were delish!! tasted just like my mom's when i was growing up and hers weren't low in fat! thanks!!

  172. I LOVE these sloppy joes! I make them EVERY Sunday for "Sloppy Joe Sunday." Thank you so much for all of your wonderful recipes and taking the time to post so often. You and your website are very much appreciated!

  173. Made these sloppy joes for the Super Bowl party tonight and they were absolutely delicious! I made extra for leftovers the next day but there was nothing left over! These are my new sloppy joes!

  174. I am a big fan of sloppy joe's and do like them a little sweet. I did not miss sugar at all in this recipe – I thought they were perfect! It was a delicious, filling meal. I served them with your sweet potato fries and a salad – another great Skinny meal – thanks Gina!

  175. This is my second recipe of yours I tried and I tell you WHAT A HIT! These were SO yummy. I was worried if my hubby would like them with the veggies but he really did!

Made this tonight as a go to meal for the week, already portioned up for dinner and lunches. It's really good. I only had 1 lb of ground beef, so I chopped an extra carrot, used a whole red pepper and a few extra mushrooms. Still came out to seven servings 🙂

Awesome recipe! Wanted to share a slight alteration I made that really jazzed this up, for those who appreciate a little extra spiciness over the tomato-sauce flavor.

Pour your first cup of tomato sauce into a 4 cup measuring cup. Then instead of a second cup of tomato sauce, add a small can of adobo sauce (sans chipotles if you can find it, since they can be SO SPICY), and then add barbecue sauce of your choice up to the 2 cup mark. It's great!

Lastly, the recipe calls for garlic but doesn't mention when to add. I just add it at the same time as the other vegetables. Works great.

    Thanks!

  178. Made this for dinner last night. Used two carrots, two celery, a zucchini, a red pepper and mushrooms. I thought it was really good but the son did not like it. So tonight I am going to use the leftovers in a stuffed pepper with a little cheese on top.

  179. i just made this and im eating right now, really good! i followed your recipe except for adding the mushrooms since i dont care for them. i also felt it was missing some sweetness so at the end i just added 2 tbsp of brown sugar twin and it did the trick without adding extra points. another keeper for my menu rotation!

  180. This is the first time I have made sloppy joes from scratch. I always just use Manwich for a quick weeknight meal. While this recipe wasn't quick (I'll use the food processor next time), it was so good, I'll never be able to stomach Manwich again. Thank you Gina, for this wonderful recipe.

I love all of your recipes Gina. I have lost 70 pounds since May of this year sticking to your awesome recipes. Definitely a huge fan over here. 🙂

  183. This was SO GOOD! I made these last week and they are my new favorite! The recipe is perfect as is and I couldn't believe how low in points it was with a 1 pt bun. Very delicious and filling. Thank you so much for this recipe!

Great idea heating this in the crock pot. All food photographed is consumed by me and my family, unlike food you see in magazines, which use all sorts of food photo tricks. I agree, it's nice to see your food cone out like the photo!

  185. I made this the other day, on my day off. I then put it in the crockpot, and into the fridge for the next day. I came home yesterday after a 12 hour shift, to this simmering in the crockpot….thick, flavorful, and the house smelling wonderful! My entire family LOVED it.

And I love the pictures. It is so nice when my recipe comes out just like the picture!!

    Thank you!

  186. Just made this tonight and it was fantastic! So simple and so tasty! My husband had a huge high calorie toasted bun, and I ate mine on a 1 pt bun. I can't believe how filling this 3 pt dinner was! Gina has done it again! Thank you!!!! Thanks to you I have lost 7 lbs in 2 weeks – 8 more to go! 🙂

  187. I made these the first time last week and it was AWESOME. I served it to my children on cooked spaghetti and told them it was meat sauce….Love!!!

  188. GINA! I feel so lucky to have found your website!!!!! I have tried several of your recipes and they are all great! My husband and I especially loved this one! It was so good in a wrap with cheddar cheese! And very low in points!

I'm glad you all enjoyed this. I'm not a fan of sweet tomato sauce myself, I like to sweeten my sauce with carrots but for those of you who prefer a sweeter sauce, you can add brown sugar.

@drc- it was my pleasure!! Thanks for the suggestion!

    Gina,
I made this for dinner last night, served with 1 pt bund, and it was a hit with all four of us! My husband and I ate the leftovers for lunch today, just in bowls. I thought the flavoring was perfect the way you've done it! Thank you for spoiling us with all these delicious recipes.

  193. You mention that you serve these with whole wheat buns but if I choose to use 1 point buns, then it'll create extra points. Does this mean that it's 2 points with the meat and the whole wheat bun? If that's the case, that is absolutely awesome! If not, 3 points is still not bad at all for this.

    Thanks!

    Laura

  194. As a new member to WW, I've been checking out your site – and this is the first recipe I've actually made. I think it tastes great. I used two handfuls of baby carrots, as that's what I had on hand. Threw all veggies in to the food processor and it was so easy. It was plenty sweet w/out any added sugar and tasted better than any pre-made sloppy joe I've ever had. Will def make again, and maybe try with turkey the next time. Planning on making the roasted acorn squash with this for dinner!

  195. This recipe was delicious! i substituted zucchini for carrots because thats what I had on hand, and added some splenda for sweetness.. yummmm
    Thanks Gina!

  196. This was sooo good!! We made it tonight & my hubby (who obviously isn't on WW) ate 2 servings. Thank you! Please keep the awesome recipes coming – this is my "go to" b/c they are always easy, pretty fast & delicious — with infant twins, that's exactly what I need!. Thanks.

  197. As a ww member I love trying new recipes and be able to stick to my point range. I made the sloppy joes and they are absolutely delicious! I love putting the fresh minced vegies in it for more nutrional value. I just came across this web site while looking for new wt watchers recipes.I too, substituted ground turkey for the meat. I will definately let everyone in my meeting know about your wonderful website!

  198. Hi Gina!

Thank you so much for this delicious recipe! It got double thumbs-up at our house. 🙂

I wanted to mention that the ingredients list includes 2 cloves of garlic, but the instructions don't mention them. I added them in with the veggies. Is that what you do?

Sara – Oh good, great timing then!

Tiffany – fresh mushrooms, I put them in the food processor. I don't personally care for canned vegetables.

Katie- I calculated it as cooked, with the cooked weight (13.6 oz). That's why I like to weigh my meat cooked, I wonder if you would get a different point value?

ljbaxter- I was looking for leaner meat but 93% was the leanest I could find that day.

  201. Just made these for dinner tonight and they were absolutely delicious! I even used 96% lean gr beef. Thanks for the recipe! 🙂

  202. When I plugged in this into WW recipe builder, it tells me that for 8 servings it would be 3 points each (no counting the bun). I noticed that you list as 7 servings for 2 points. I did specifically list 1.25 pounds of raw 93% lean ground beef. When I listed raw ground sirloin, it was 4 points.

For me, 3 points is still great, but not sure what could be different.

  203. You read my mind! My husband suggested the other day that he'd like to have some sloppy joes soon, and I instantly cringed because I wasn't sure how to make them WW friendly! Thank you so much and I can't wait to try these!

Jenn, cute tradition!! I'm sure I'd like it with corn.

Amanda, yes, I should have clarified, lots of nutritional information is for cooked weight, so check before you calculate.

  206. Gina, the recipe looks great! I have to disagree with your tip on weighing meat. It is ok to weigh it raw or cooked you just need to make sure you are looking up the calories for the correct one.

Ex: If you weigh meat raw look up the calories for raw meat
For Weight Watchers, their tools list the points for raw and then for cooked.

This looks great! I haven't had sloppy joes since I was a kid. But I used to have it for dinner with corn every single Halloween growing up before I went trick-or-treating! It was a tradition!

I love recipes like this for my classroom, as well. This is just the kind of meal that kids love to make and eat. The nutritious component is critical and I appreciate your hard work. This is a keeper and going into my grade 9 until.

  209. I have not made this yet but I make one my mom always used. It calls for Ketchup, brown sugar (I use the splenda variety), mustard, Worcestershire sauce and a few other seasonings. MMMMM, I might try this version soon.

  210. Hi Gina, I discovered your site last week and have been making recipes from it weekly. I'm definitely not a cook but with your recipes I've been impressing the family! I made the sloppy joes tonight and they were so delicious. I have a very picky 2 year old and husband (who will not eat veggies) and even he really loved these! I did add just a half packet of equal for some sweetness because I prefer that but it definitely tastes as delicious w/out as well. Thanks for all the work you put into these recipes that allow us to eat with the whole family while being on WW 🙂

  211. Made this tonight, I've only had sloppy joes you make with a package mix. These were so much better homemade. Thanks for tackling this, I'm having the leftovers for lunch.

I've never had one, not even from the can so I'm not sure what they should taste like but I did enjoy it.

  213. Well I made this tonight and I am so sad we weren't huge fans of it! My husband and I haven't had sloppy joes for probably twenty years so we weren't really sure what it should taste like but I guess it just wasn't what we were expecting! I added some sugar to it and it still didn't do the trick and I followed it all to the t. We served it on one point burger buns. I think for the leftovers I am going to add some beans and make it somewhat like a chili! Thanks for all your great recipes! Out of the over 30 I have now tried this is the first that wasn't a five star in our books! 🙂

Jenn @ Cooking Aweigh the Pounds – yes, I used the carrots to sweeten it instead of the sugar, but I suppose if you like it sweet, you could always add the sugar. Thanks for your feedback!!

I love the idea of adding zucchini to it!

  215. My mom has an old recipe that includes sugar as well. I think the sweetness really makes this receipe. I would recommend adding it back in since it's supposed to be savory and sweet. I, too, use ground turkey to lower the fat and it's great.

    1. Sugar is what ups the smart points if you are doing weight watchers. Try splendid for sweetness. Tastes great!

You read my mind! I've been trolling the web for a WW-friendly sloppy joe recipe for days. Definitely going to give this one a try.

Rachael Ray's Super Sloppy Joe recipe is my go to recipe for sure! I see that you took out the sugar, did you substitute a carrot for the sugar? My family particularly likes Rachael's recipe due to the sweetness.

  218. This looks yummy! I add grated zucchini and mushrooms to my home made spaghetti sauce as well. Adds flavor and texture and is good even meatless. 🙂

  219. I've never made the sauce from scratch, always just used the canned stuff…but I am very willing to give this recipe a try. I always use ground turkey and besides adding red pepper, I also add shredded carrots and chopped up zucchini to mine. You can't believe how good the zucchini is in it!

  220. It looks great! I add finely chopped zuchini to mine, too. 🙂 My kids, 6 and 2, never even notice.
