How to make this easy ground turkey dish

I buy a package of ground turkey every week, and I am always coming up with new ways to use it. Here’s how to make this ground turkey and potatoes recipe.

  • Finely chop the tomato, garlic, and cilantro.
  • Brown the turkey and season with salt and cumin.
  • Add the scallions, tomato mixture, peas, potato, tomato sauce, water, cumin, salt, and bay leaf.
  • Cover and simmer on medium-low heat for about 25 minutes until the potatoes are soft.
  • Add more water if needed and remove the bay leaf.

What to Serve with Ground Turkey with Potatoes

We served this ground turkey dish over rice, and the portions were extremely generous. You could also use cauliflower rice for a low-carb option. If you want to skip the rice, double the potatoes or serve with roasted vegetables.

How to Freeze

Leftover ground turkey and potatoes will last in the refrigerator for three to four days or in the freezer for up to three months. To reheat, thaw overnight in the fridge and microwave until warm.

Variations:

  • Potatoes: Sub sweet potatoes for russet potatoes.
  • Peas: Use frozen peas instead of fresh ones. If you don’t like peas, swap them for corn, black beans, carrots, or bell pepper.
  • Tomatoes: Use a can of diced tomatoes if you don’t have a fresh one.
  • Spiciness: Add crushed red pepper or jalapeño or top with hot sauce to make it spicy.
Spring peas, ground turkey, cumin, cilantro and potatoes come together to create this quick comforting weeknight dish.

  1. Love an easy, complete meal with protein, veggies and carbs! Also found it bland even after adding taco seasoning. Definitely needs some love!

  2. Perfect description:” Don’t you love it when you whip up something with random leftover ingredients, and it turns out incredible? ”
    We loved it, thank you!

  3. We tried this tonight. My husband and I loved it. I only added some mushrooms and celery just to increase our veggie intake. I used tomato sauce made from our garden tomatoes and a potato we also grew.

  4. This was a great recipe. I added more spice because of the other reviews and a can of pinto beans. Great easy week night meal. We will definitely make again 🙂

I have this cooking on the stove as I text I can’t wait to eat it smells so good thank you for sharing this recipe. I have enjoyed every skinny taste recipe I’ve made . Thank you for helping me stay on my path to success ♥️

  6. I love almost all Gina’s recipes but this one was not a favorite. it was ok but I found it bland so I doubled the cumin and garlic and added a little crushed red pepper which helped but I would not make again.

  7. Easy to make and we were talking about different ways to modify it as we were eating it. We made it with parsley because that’s what we had on hand and it came out great. Will definitely be making again!

  8. I truly love all of your recipes. I really enjoyed this one. I messed up and did whole snow peas instead of hulled, but it tasted great anyways! I love how easy the recipes are. Very few processed ingredients, easy substitutes, and usually most of the ingredients I can supply with my garden. So thankful for your recipes. This tasted amazing served over white rice

  9. This was such a good meal! The hubs even said, “I’d eat this any time.” I added a tsp of chipotle chili powder and used some leftover pico de gallo in place of the tomato.

  10. I’m sorry, but this was quite bland. I did use black beans as suggested instead of peas because that’s what I had. I’m hoping flavors will meld and leftovers will be better. I couldn’t taste the cilantro at all (and I used more than called for) and I couldn’t taste the green onions, either. I would suggest adding those near the end.

  11. I made using frozen peas and used regular organic ground turkey instead of ground breast. Probably upped the calorie count a bit. Also cut back a little on the salt and add a shake of chili flakes. Didn’t need rice was very hearty and filling all alone. Great meal!

  12. I love Ground turkey recipes , their healthy for you, Love this one but ,what can I replace instead of “1/4 cup cilantro”?

I love this recipe. I recently made it again and I didn’t have tomato sauce so I used mild harissa. It was delicious!

  14. Easy and healthy ground turkey option! I’m always looking for more of those. I served with a mix of white rice and cauliflower rice. No complaints from my family, which I consider a win! Thanks Gina!

    1. I love all of your recipes – they are delicious and healthy which is what we’re looking for. .can’t wait to try this one.

Thank you for taking the time to share

  15. I’ve been making this recipe for YEARS. It’s always a hit, almost like curry, great use of ground turkey, super easy and it’s ingredients we always have on hand. I like to add a small cubed sweet potato along with the white potato.

  16. Yummy!
I had ground turkey and was thinking of what to make. I googled ground turkey recipe and found this one. Tried and and my whole family loved it!

We have this every week or so. Thank you Skinnytaste for yummy and healthy recipes 🙂

  17. I really enjoy this recipe! Since it was so hot yesterday I decided to make it in the crockpot rather than on the stove and it worked perfectly! I browned the turkey in the same crockpot since I have a high setting, and then I had it on low for about 3 hours or rather until the potatoes were cooked through. I doubled the tomato sauce and peas but left the meat and potatoes the same. Goes great with broccoli/cauliflower rice or actual rice!

  18. Doubled the meat and sauce. Kept the potatoes and peas the same. Finished by cooking in instant pot for six minutes. Oh, and I used my neighbor’s canned tomato sauce from her garden. So awesome!

  19. I made this for lunch today and it’s really good! It was quick and easy, so it’ll be going in my meal prep rotation too.

  20. This recipe is easy to make and could easily be adapted to fit your tastes. The seasoning as written is pretty mild, so I would spice it up a bit next time but it’s a good jumping off point. I cut my potatoes at a smaller 1/2″ dice based on other reviews and it still took longer than indicated for them to be cooked. I liked it and my husband really really liked it, so this will be added to our list of weeknight quick fixes with a couple of tweaks. Thank you!

    1. UPDATED:: We made this again last night and used 1/2 tsp of garam masala and 1/2 tsp of curry powder in place of the cumin. We added half of a jalapeno to the tomato mixture in the food processor and the results were great! A departure from the recipe as written but just some feedback for those who might want more spice.

      1. good tips – i didn’t get the flavor i was looking for and the garam masal/curry powder addition sorted it right out. thanks!

Nice change of flavors from the original recipe. I’ll try it both ways. Thanks!

      3. Thank you! I was looking for a variation from cumin and cilantro as we just did turkey tacos.

  21. I couldn’t give this 5 stars which would make it equal to your Fish Florentine but it was darn good. I was generous with the cumin. And I didn’t want to cook rice since I needed to use potatoes. So I increased the potatoes, doubled the tomato sauce and other “wet” ingredients. The mini food processor was a great idea for prep work, Gina. Cutting the potatoes a little smaller allowed them to cook in 25 minutes. I would call this comfort food. Another plus, it came together easily. Thank you, Gina!

  22. This is one of my all time favorite meals! It is bubbling in the stove right now and I cannot wait to eat it. I’ve made it several times and it is one I hope my kids will ask for in the future. Thanks again Gina for your awesome recipes that keep my family healthy and make me feel like a rockstar in the kitchen.

We enjoyed the dish but did make some tweaks. First, I cooked sweet potatoes (2)  in the instant pot so they could be added in already cooked.  I sautéed onions garlic and green cabbage, and then added the ground turkey. Salt, cumin, a touch of curry powder and turmeric, and black pepper for seasoning. Can of diced tomatoes (half puréed because my kids prefer no tomato chunks 🤪)— all that simmering while adding chopped (and cooked) sweet potatoes and some frozen peas right at the end. let it all cook together just a bit longer.  Served as is, with no rice hence the extra potato. It was a hearty meal, healthy, and delicious. Best comfort food.

I substituted the potatoes for asparagus . With a rice dish I thought eliminating one starch would make it less filling and diet conscience. It was delicious. Particularly with fresh herbs, cilantro, parsley , chives and Jazmine rice.

  25. I gave this 5 stars for a simple and easy to make dinner.. I would’t serve it to guests, but for a week night family meal it is fabulous! I served it with steamed broccoli.

  26. I love this recipe! I’ve made it twice now and it’s delicious and makes an easy meal prep. Thanks for posting it.

  27. I feel like I could turn this into a really great Indian dish with just a few tweaks.  As always thanks for the inspiration!

  28. I did not find this recipe very flavorful. Cooking the fresh cilantro and scallions seemed to deny them oftheir flavor. If I made this again, I would add those in at the very end. I also think it may have been better to brown the turkey with a yellow onion and garlic first, to better bring out the flavor.

  29. I’m a vegetarian, so I haven’t personally tried it..  but my husband said I could put this on a weekly rotation.
That is not something I have ever heard him say.
Thank you, for an easy go to

  30. Made this for dinner tonight and it tasted amazing. You’ll just have to ignore how it looks 🙂 I substituted the peas for carrots because that’s what I had on hand and it turned out great!

    1. I highly recommend preboiling/steaming your potatoes while you’re chopping everything up to shorten the cook time a bit

  31. To make it one less step, I used a can of RoTel Diced tomatoes and green chillie’s, a small 8oz can of tomato sauce and 1/4 cup water. Made it super quick to prepare and added a very very mild spice. Even my kids liked it and they don’t like spicy.

  32. My fiance is eating healthy. Ground turkey is something he eats so this was great for us! So simple and included fresh ingredients. He loves it as well as I! Instead of peas I just added mixed vegetables. Over rice with a spoonful of sour cream.

  33. I had ground turkey and needed a recipe. Google brought up several different ones including this one and I am glad that I chose this one. It was super easy and came out great. I served it over spaghetti squash for myself and whole grain rotini for my husband. I used baby gold potatoes so I didn’t have issues with the potatoes taking too long to cook.  I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions for thickening the sauce? My only complaint was that it was too watery.

  34. I made this in the instant pot. Cook ground turkey on sauté mode, add remaining ingredients, cook on high pressure for 10 minutes and quick release.

  35. Easy recipe but definitely not going to have the potatoes cooked in 25 minutes unless you have the consistency of soup. What I mean by that is if you want it to be thicker then you will be simmering the dish for closer to 45 minutes. And I started off with about a cup of water and added more here and there throughout the cooking process.

  36. Absolutely delicious! My husband and toddlers love this recipe and it has definitely become one of our favorites.

  37. I had little time and ground turkey to use up, so I made this with a can of roasted diced tomatoes and spaghetti sauce instead and it was still delicious. I used white sweet potatoes instead of regular and that really made the dish. Also, instead of serving it over rice, I just doubled the potatoes. Fed a family of four.

  38. I made this a few days ago and ate it for 3 days. Really good recipe. I’ll be making this again very soon. Thanks.

  39. Love the way this came out. My only complaint is that it took longer than what the directions said to make. Be prepared for the cooking time to take a little longer due to the potatoes. Other than that it was delicious!

  40. Very yummy! I read one of the comments where someone had used sweet potato and not having white potatoes I used a sweet potato. Worked very well. A quick to make dinner that is healthy.

  41. Could someone confirm if this is 5 Freestyle points per serving or is it 1 Freestyle post (like some of the other comments above mentioned)? Looking to meal prep for the week and this seems like a good one! Thanks!

  42. It’s not the “prettiest” dish, but the flavors are amazing.  I think fresh garlic is the key.  If you are using frozen peas, I would recommend adding them later (as they get a little over cooked after 25 minutes).  I will definitely make this again.

  43. I made this tonight with ground chicken breast vs. turkey. I put the ingredients into the Weight Watchers recipe builder and came up with 1 point per serving. Even after double checking quantities (like, 16 oz of chicken vs. 20 oz. turkey), it was only 1 point. Not that I’m complaining – this was tasty and filling! One serving was way too much for me 🙂

  44. I made a few minor adjustments, but this recipe was delicious and full of flavor. I used a sweet potato instead of regular potato. I used 2 1/2 tsp cumin. 1 tsp to brown the meat and the rest when it was all simmering together. I also added 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper for some heat. Frozen peas were also used. This is a definite make again. Easy, budget friendly and delicious!

  45. I was out of cumin so I used a curry powder. Took much longer than 25 to cook my potatoes. Next time I will just cut them to much smaller dice. Tasted great!

    Thank you!

  48. Hi Gina,

When I calculated with the new Freestyle points, I came up with around 1, yes, I said ONE smart point per serving!! Couple changes I made: I doubled the recipe and used 98% ff ground turkey. I doubled all the ingredients except the potato. I had only one large potato, so I used it. Also added, fresh green beans. For a little heat, I used red pepper powder (gochugaru). My whole family absolutely loved this recipe. We served with basmati rice, and a ZERO SP raita (made with nonfat plain greek yogurt, cucumber, a squeeze of lemon, and several dashes of cumin and salt). Rice smart points not added into recipe.

  51. This was delicious, even with the changes I had to make. I didn’t have cilantro and I ran out of frozen peas. I used parsley and frozen spinach and I loved it!  Next time I’ll add some crushed red pepper.

  52. Just made this! Loved that it was quick and simple. I’m not a pea fan so I used green beans oh and I used ground beef because that’s what I had.

When I add this recipe to My Fitness Pal it comes up as 1200 calories! I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong if anything. Can anyone explain to me why this is the case?

    1. You have to change the number of servings in My Fitness Pal. 1200+ cal is for the entire dish, not for one serving.

  58. Quick easy and healthy! I like this with a little rice, some tabasco sauce, and some yogurt for an indian style meal that is still healthy 🙂 A great quick and easy weeknight option!

  59. I come up with 259 kcal on my Fitness Pal. Not a huge discrepancy, but the ingredients match completely, so it makes me wonder why the difference. Is weight watchers not counting one of the ingredients?

  60. This is such a tasty recipe!! This is basically the Piccadillo but with ground turkey instead of ground beef

  61. My boyfriend won’t eat peas or edamame.  Any suggestions of what else I could use instead of the peas?

  62. This was my first ever skinny taste recipe adventure. Really like that it’s a healthy beef alternative. Needed to chop taters smaller, used frozen peas and added more cumin and some curry powder. Pretty happy with myself and how it turned out. Thanks for the great recipe.

  63. I like all of the ingredients, but had to add salt & a little bit of cream (about 1/3 cup) to make it more flavorful. I also cut the potatoes smaller than 1 inch & they weren’t done after 30 minutes.

  64. Gina, I made this today with frozen edamame and 1/4 tsp turmeric. My whole family loved it! Thanks for all the great recipes!

  65. This is one of my go-to favorites! It’s simple and makes great lunches for the week. I usually only use one red potato to keep the carbs low. I also add a little cayenne to give it a tiny kick and some turmeric because of all the great health benefits! Love your recipes, Gina!!

  68. I’ve been cooking this recipe since the original posting every few months. It’s amazing. Follow the recipe exactly. I also use hot sauce to kick up the spice a notch when ready to serve.

  69. This has become one of my favorite things to meal prep for my lunches during the week. It's very versatile and you can really add anything to it that you want. Not to mention is tastes great!

  70. I jut made this dish. I though i was pretty bland for me so i add a tablespoon of brown sugar and it is now tastier. I think changing to sweet potato is a great idea too. Defineitly will cook this when my friends come over. 🙂

  71. I wasn't expecting much when I saw this recipe but I had all of the ingredients on hand so decided to give it a go. I'm so glad I did! It reminded me of a nice hearty stew without the beef yet very filling. I'm going to double this recipe next time. We loved it!!

  72. I made this last night with sweet potato and boy was it a hit! So tasty!!! Thank you for the great recipes!!!!

  73. It's almost done and smells amazing! I didn't have cilantro so I used mint instead. It smells like this Lebanese dish my family makes called kafta. Yum!

  74. Hi Gina,

Just made this for my boyfriend and I annnd it tastes SO good! I put sweet potato rather than ordinary potato and didn't add the cilantro because I don't like it lol I also added a little more cumin than the recipe asked for. It was delissssh

  75. Just made this – AWESOME!! I just rejoined WW today and what a great way to kick it off. Thanks for the amazing recipe!

  76. All 5 people in my family LOVED this I added cauliflower and carrots and left out the peas (didnt have any). Thanks for all of your great recipes

  77. Great recipe. I'm making this for the second time! I actually used zucchini instead of potatoes and its fantastic! I used more cumin and added crushed red pepper flakes to give it a little kick and its awesome. Thanks for the recipe its yummy!

  78. I made this yesterday and I have to say it was great! My boyfriend took 3 portions he loved it that much !

I added a few things like extra spices and a flat free broth instead of just water. Was great!

You are my go to website and I don't even open my cooking books anymore!

    Thank you

  79. I have made this recipe twice now, and it has become one of my go-to favorites! I added 1/4 cup of green olives and the dish was perfection. I am not at all a fan of ground turkey, so I was skeptical, but all the flavors combine into such a delicious dish that the turkey wasn't even an issue for me. I just love the recipes here, keep them coming 🙂

  80. I made this tonight! Awesome! I used sweet potato instead of white just because I had a large sweet potato left from another recipe. Full of flavor! SOO GOOD.

  81. I made this last night. I think it was good? Due to a cold I can't taste much 🙁 But my fiance gobbled it up when he got home from work and he's a picky eater. Success! I did however use chicken broth instead of water. I thought I had peas, but of course when it came time to add them, there were none! So I left those out, and I HATE bay leaves so I left that out too and like I said, I think it was good. Having leftovers for lunch today 🙂

  82. Made this a few days ago and the whole family really enjoyed it. I made some changes due to not having all the ingredients on hand –so I'll list in case it helps someone else. I used a sweet potato instead of a regular potato (delicious!), used frozen peas instead of fresh, and ended up doubling the amount of cumin as I taste tested it. Also I used about 1 and 3/4 cup of crushed tomatoes instead of the fresh tomato and the tomato sauce. All in all was so delicious and filling. We served over brown rice, as Gina suggested. Thanks for the recipe -was amazing and quick!

  83. I made this recipe last night for the 1st time and it was AMAZING and SOOOO flavorful! Loved it. Thanks for sharing 🙂

  84. For the first time since using SkinnyTaste I actually had to make a few changes…overall the recipe was absolutely delicious and super easy, but couldnt really taste any of the garlic, cilantro or even green onions. next time i make this (which I definetely am!!) I would prob almost double the amount of those that the recipe calls for.

  85. Made this tonight and it was awesome! I used a large potato since I love them, so I tweaked the point count. It was awesome and yummy! Will definitely make again. Tasted like picadillo

  86. I made this last night…my fiance went for seconds 🙂 I didn't have any cilantro so ended up using dried parsley and it worked well. I used frozen peas and put them in as the recipe said so. This dish reminds me of a Macedonian stew that mom makes. I know she adds a flour/olive mixture to thicken it up and I was amazed how similar this tasted to her stew. I might add some more tomatoes since I love tomato sauce

  87. Loved this so much. I added some curry and sriracha for some heat. I served it over couscous. So good! Thank you for all your awesome recipes. I've been telling all my friends about your website. They love it too!

  88. I would like to do the turkey, potato, peas tonight. Sounds delicious. Dont particularly like cilantro but will use it anyway. Can I use frozen peas instead of fresh?

  89. I made this tonight for dinner and my boys loved it!! The flavour was fantastic, and a nice change from what we normally eat 🙂 I didn't have fresh peas, and used a frozen mix of peas, carrots, corn and beans. I liked the variety of veggies. My hubby wants me to try it with either chard or broccoli next time too!

  90. Hi Gina, Your site is amazing!!! I was wondering how do you think this would do in the crock pot?

PS: I just made the Pumpkin Oatmeal Pecan cookies and my husband said it reminds him of something his late Grammy would have made…thanks so much!!!

Hi Gina, This is a fantastic simple dish but very delicious. Thank you for sharing this great recipe! We will definitely be making more of this for sure.

  92. Diana, I'm SO glad you made that comment as I was just about to ask whether it would work with a sweet potato 😀 Yay!

  93. Hi Gina –

I love all of your recipes – I've tried several in the last few weeks and all of them were delicious!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I made this with sweet potatoes and it was SO good – I don't think I'd ever try it with white potatoes! Also – instead of dicing a tomato, I used some cilantro salsa that I had on hand and it worked out perfectly!

Second time making this. Love it. Best part is I normally have all the ingredients on hand anyways! :o) Great in a tortilla the next day too! That's how my son eats it.

  95. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up! I came home today to find I left the freezer door cracked and was left with thawed peas, ground turkey and a container of tomato sauce. Assuming the sauce and peas were dunzo, I hopped on here to get some ideas for how to use the ground turkey.
Imagine my surprise and delight when I came accross this recipe and was able to use all my random, thawed ingredients!! Most importantly, it's DELICIOUS! You're a genius and a lifesaver!

  96. Aaaaaaaaahhhhhmaaazing! Dumped in a container of mushrooms that I had to use up, and added curry powder. Incredible–so filling and delicious, and husband-approved, too.

  97. Made this tonight Gina and it got 4 thumbs up from this family. So yummy! Had fresh cilantro and tomatoes from the garden. Subbed cauliflower for the potato as I had some and it needed to be used. Also added red bell pepper that needed use as well and the whole things was so delish!! Thanks for your fabulous recipes! Everything I've tried off your site is wonderful!

  98. I plan on using frozen peas. Will probably add them within the last 10 min. or so. Hopefully it works. I LOVE your recipes and hopefully this will be no exception. My husband hates tomatoes so I won't even tell him there in this. They are so pureed I doubt he will notice.

Ok…I LOVED this! My can opener was broken, so I added a jar of Indian Simmer Sauce instead which basically just added heat (with a lean to indian flavor) instead of just plain tomatoes…and I found it to be SUPER flavorful! My hubby wasn't so sure about the potato…but, that was one of my favorite parts! Nice job!

No, I cut it small and add it raw, because of the liquid it cooks with the meat if you keep it covered.

    maybe a silly question but:

do you cook the potato (boil or microwave) before cutting it into pieces and throwing it on the skillet?

  104. This is delicious and very versatile! I browned the meat and then plopped everything in the crockpot on low for several hours. Modifications: I added some leftover chopped red bell pepper, added extra cumin, and added about 1 tsp of garam masala. We served it over rice and topped it with extra cilantro and sriachi… also to make it creamy- sour cream, Greek yogurt, or even cottage cheese! Yesterday when we had leftovers, my husband thought it would make a tasty filling for a meat pie/turnover. Thanks, Gina!!!

  105. I made this tonight and it was fantastic! I enjoy Indian food immensely but it didn't dawn on me when I was planning to make this that it would have flavors reminiscent of that cuisine. I was super excited when I smelled everything simmering away and could not wait to have dinner! My husband kept yelling from the other room that it smelled awesome and finished an entire plate 🙂 He said it probably would be great too with cut up pieces of chicken like cubes and maybe I'll try that next time! Thanks for another winner. You make staying on plan so much easier with your recipes. We've made many delicious dishes from your site and I cannot thank you enough!

    Beauties and the Feast

I just chopped the tomato, garlic, cilantro by hand and it worked just fine. I loved this recipe last night! My husband wanted it to be a little spicier which is easily done. Another yummy, easy dinner. 🙂

Kate, just making sure I'm clear, I served it over 1/2 cup rice but the rice is not included in the points so you would have to add extra for that.

It is clear to see why this dish was a huge hit. This dish looks absolutely mouth watering. Thanks for sharing.

  109. Hi Gina

Sorry – I didn't realise there was rice!!! Will definitely try it and come back to you 🙂 Thanks for the response.

Kate, this is extremely filling with rice, give it a try and then leave a comment and tell me what you think. If you prefer not to have trice, then add another potato.

  111. Looks delicious but 1 potato seems incredibly small amount between 5 people!!! I'd probably still be starving 🙁

  112. This was so good, reminded my husband and I of a shepherd's pie, almost.

I think this might also be good with some corn and we discussed between us the possibility of adding some sandwich thins and making it like a sloppy joe next time.

Hi, after I put the ground turkey and browned it. I added some shredded carrot and then put the rest in the crock pot with the potatoes and tomato sauce. Instead of adding diced tomatoes , I found diced fired ( grilled ) canned ones no extra additives…YUMMY! My daughter just came out and said'Supper smells awesome!"! It's so nice to cook food everyone will eat and it also stays in my points system! Thank you, Jenn from Canada

  114. This is my first visit to your site. I've seen it recommended by many of my FB friends! Your recipes look great, and I think I'll be making this one for tomorrow's dinner.

A quick question though — what kind of tomato "sauce" do you use here?

  115. Just made this for dinner tonight! Came out great!! I didnt have a fresh tomato so I sub'd 1/2 can rotel w/ habaneros… which added some perfect heat! Oh and also vidalia onion instead of scallions. I will def. be making this again! 🙂

Making this tonight! Really looking forward to it. Found fresh peas at Trader Joe's today…

  118. Very delicious! Added red pepper flake and chipotle hot sauce to spice it up a bit for the husband. Cilantro was fresh from my herb pots. Had the creamy grape dessert for a snack after dinner too. SO SO good! Thank you!!

  119. Followed the recipe, except used Vidalia onion in place of the green onion since I have a 10lb bag of them I'm trying to use up. My husband RAVED about this dish! It's going in the rotation. Thanks so much.

I'm sure jalapeño would be nice or even a red bell pepper.

Keema was my inspiration but to get the kids to eat, went with what I know will work. And that's Latin!!

I'll keep that in mind to weight the potatoes in the future, it was about 8 oz peeled.

Just Jenny, no there was no fat, the pan was dry. If it was beef, I would certainly drain it.

  121. this might be a silly question, so i apologize..but do you not drain the fat from the ground turkey? thanks! I love your recipes and i can't wait to make this one!

  122. Gina – it would be tremendously helpful if you would include the weight of the potato you use (in all your recipes including potato!). You have so many recipes that call for potato, and they can vary so much in size and weight. Can you please give at least an approximate weight so we can get an accurate points count? I'm sure I'm not the only one who would appreciate it! Thanks! I love your blog – I have made so many recipes and there hasn't been a dud among them.

    Food Glorious Food!

Lovely recipe! Turkey is hard to come by here so I will try making it with chicken 🙂

  124. DELISH!

Only change I make to this recipe is to add 1/2tsp each of dried crushed oregano and smoked paprika.

I also added 1/2 chopped bell pepper, 1 chopped carrot, 1/2 chopped chayote, and 1 chopped celery stalk all at the end because I like my veggies to have a crunch.

  125. I have some ground turkey in my fridge to use, and your e-mail arrived at just the right time! Thanks!!!

  126. I've made keema very similar to this with curry powder and garam masala. So easy & delicious — I need to try this version, too!

  127. Looks absolutely yummy! I would have thought of a turkey curry!!!! Its going to be on my must try list now!!!Thank you

  128. Made this tonight. It was soooo yummy! I may just add a jalapeno to the tomato/garlic/cilantro mixture for spice. Thanks Gina!

  129. this will definitely be added to the lists of recipes of "must make" dinners. By the way, I just made your chocolate chip cloud cookies. All I can say is amazingly, super delicious! I've only made 2 of your recipes, but I haven't been disapointed yet. Keep doing what you do and please don't ever stop! I'm constantly checking for your next post.

Swati – I love Keema. I think that is where the inspiration came from when I was making this. I actually have a lamb keema on my site but I'll have to make it with turkey next.

    1. Hi Gina, I have actually made your Keema recipe with about every kind of ground meat you can imagine! My favorite is 97% turkey (even more than lamb).

  132. Hi Gina, I just want to say that this reminds me of a dish my mother makes for me that I love, it's an Indian dish called keema. No potatoes in it, but I love potatoes, so I like your version a lot. I think the Indian dish probably also adds chili powder, ginger, and coriander, so maybe you'd be interested in trying the variation. I can't wait to try your way.

Raquel, I'm not familiar with a moringa leaf.

2 small red potatoes should be equal for the same points.

Rog Dog- Now that would be a great idea! I miss my kati roll!

  134. this looks beautiful and delicious! Think I will make this one tomorrow night. Making the tuna salad right now 🙂

Looks fantastic! I was popping peas out of there shells for another recipe earlier today… I'll have to add this one in next. I love on the fly cooking with things on hand. Saves money and forces you to get creative!

  136. nice!!! I would wrap that in a Tortilla or a Nan.
and of course I will added green chilly (jalapeno)..lol

it's like Picadillo, is it okay if I will include other ingredient such as moringa leaf? Hope it doesn't affect the taste.

This dish was created on the fly with ingredients I had ion hand as well!

Rice is extra points, and that was only one russet potato cut small. Maybe it looks larger in the image.

Olga, I love an Indian dish with that combo so I knew this would work 🙂

Let me know how it turns out!

  139. making this right now. Can't wait to eat! Thanks for all of your hard work and wonderful recipes!!!

  140. That sounds amazing! I love the addition of the cumin with the cilantro. A bit fresh with a bit smokey. Yum!

  141. Is there a typo on the number of potatoes? One is listed but in all the pictures it appears to be more than one potato or that is one GIANT potato. Love your recipes!!

this is SO my type of a dish. Love meat/potato/pea combo. And then you also add tomatoes 😉

    PS I'm completely unorganized also

  143. I was just trying to think up some ideas for the turkey I'm defrosting for dinner when your recipe came up on my FB feed. I have all of the other ingredients so this is perfect! Can't wait to try it out 🙂

I don't like peas but you really don't taste them as all the flavors meld together. Perhaps carrots instead?

  145. Looks pretty tasty. We might have to try it with another vegetable as my wife doesn't like peas, but she does love potato!
