Steak and Cheese Sandwiches with Onions and Mushrooms
Steak and Cheese Sandwiches

I have a confession to make… steak and cheese sandwiches are my weakness! I love them for lunch or dinner and have a really hard time passing up a Charley’s Subs whenever I’m in the mall. I blame my Mom, she always made the BEST steak and cheese sandwiches for dinner, and luckily I don’t have to give them up and neither do you! I love this with Swiss, provolone, cheddar or even American cheese… whatever you wish!

Steak and Cheese Sandwiches with Onions and Mushrooms

Yesterday I posted a recipe for Quick Skillet Steak with Mushrooms and Onions, this sandwich uses that steak recipe as the filling, also a great way to use up leftovers. And as I’ve mentioned before, I always scoop out some of the bread to make a bigger sandwich without the added calories or points.

Make it more substantial and serve this with a cup of soup such as Cauliflower Soup or Zucchini Soup.

  1. Had left over eye round sliced very thin and put this together with some extra au juice like a french dip. Very good and will make again .

  2. I made this last night. I had left over steak and cut it up in strips and added it at the end to warm. It was delicious. Would definitely make it again.

  3. I have been making these for a few years now and I use beef tenderloin pieces and I also add peppers to the mushrooms and onions. I use a french loaf and mix 1/4 pkg. of cream cheese, 1/4 cup of mayonnaise and 2 garlic cloves. I have also swapped chicken for the beef!

  4. I’ve entered the nutritional values in my WW app. And I’m only getting 11 points? Also it appears nothing is listed in the saturated fats. Is this because it’s at zero?

  6. You use different types of steaks for different types of recipes, but can I use sirloin steak for any of them?

  8. Made this last night on Italian bread. Cutting the hole is a great idea.  Usually everything is falling out of the sandwich.  No problems here I did add  mushrooms also.

  9. I have made this recipe many times and it's a great "cheat" meal because it tastes so good, you don't feel like you're eating light. I use the Ultra Thin Sargento provolone because I don't always love the taste of a reduced fat cheese. It melts and browns beautifully in the oven under the broiler. Gouda is amazing on this also!

  10. This looks so good! But I'm not going to use "light" ingredients, to many chemicals. And as to the sandwich? It's missing something else to make it the best… baby spinach, tomato, green pepper, and some mayo! YUM!

  11. Gina, I LOVE your recipes. Started with Zucchini Tots (huge hit with kids, teens and adults alike) and haven't had a miss from you yet. Question on this recipe and it's "mother recipe". Is it 1/2 pound of beef or 1 pound of beef and on which is the nutrition information based? Recipe calls for 1/2 pound but "Servings: 4 • Serving Size: 1/4th (about 4 oz) • Old Points: 2 pts • Points+: 2 pts "

  12. I made these over the weekend – fabulous! I used thinly slicked pork because I didn't have any beef. Great recipe and so flavorful!

  13. Does the calorie/carb content reflect having scooped out some bread, or is it just with straight-up from the bag bread?

Just made these for lunch. My husband loved them! I couldn't find sandwich steak and my butcher had no clue what I was talking about. I used a thin round steak. It turned out good, but it took much longer than expected. I also added bell peppers and the onion/bell pepper mixture was what took so long. I think it would be a quick dinner if I chopped the steak, onions and peppers the night before. We're going on vacation next week with another family and I plan on making these for dinner b/c they will be fairly quick and easy after a day at the beach!

  15. I have never heard of that cut of meat. Can you suggest something that would be a little easier to find?

  16. Instead of using this bread, couldn't you substitute that for a whole wheat hot dog bun….only 3pts for the bun. Smaller sandwich, but the taste would be the same!

  17. ok what is the proper name for the beef round sandwhich steaks?!?!?!? im not a big cooker with steak and looked today and only could find like round eye steaks or something along those lines??? HELLLPPP please!

    1. i used london broil since i wasn't sure what sandwich steaks were either. The meat was tender and it tasted just as good (even better actually) than Charley's

  18. Made this with venison steak…..I don't normally like venison but this was awesome. Thanks for the recipe!

  19. OMG such a comfort food and good cold for lunch the next day!!!

I added a couple tablespoons of reduced fat mayo mixed with 1 teaspoon of sirracha. To. die. for.

  20. Gina- Have you tried Sara Lee Delightful bread, hamburger/hot dog buns?? They work great for recipes like this! Same taste just not as dense. The bread is only 45 calories a slice and the buns are 80 calories a piece.

  21. This was THE most delicious sandwich I've ever made! I used pepper jack cheese for an extra kick. Thanks for the recipe 🙂

To Kim… if you look at the original recipe for the meat with mushrooms and onions it has the calories and points for just that. It's under 100 cal.

  23. could you please let me know what the points would be without the bread so then I can decide how much bread I can afford (points).

  24. Ok… I made it today! Wonderful!!! I added two things though. I followed the recipe as is… but before I squished it together and dug it… I added a little bit of horseradish & some fresh spinach…
I've made 3 of your recipes in 2 days… all winners!!

  25. saw the recipe… I have a London Broil that will be going over a few recipes! This one is going to be added!!

  26. I used the previous steak and onion recipe so is it the bread and cheese that raises the points so much? I also used wheat stick of bread and no oil I used ff beef broth to cook the meet in does that bring the point value down?

  27. Looks great, I'm making it tonight. Is there a reason you use garlic powder rather than fresh garlic? Is it because it's easier or a taste choice? So glad I discovered your Web site!

  28. I made this for myself and my husband a few nights ago and we loved it. Looooooved it. I want to make it again tonight.

    Thanks,

  29. I made this recipe for my 7-year old daughter and myself. After the first bite, we both closed our eyes for a second, then looked at each other, and she said "Mmm, Mommy this is what heaven must taste like". Needless to say, this recipe is definitely going on my regular repertoire. We can't thank you enough!! Gina you rock!

Round is the name of the cut of beef, they sell it be me sliced for pepper steak as well. Ask your butcher in the supermarket.

  31. I made this for dinner last night (well actually for the week), and it was fantastic! You never cease to impress Gina! Thanks!

  32. As always I prepare a new Gina recipe every night. I am curious as well, where do you find round sandwich steaks. I was thinking Steak-ums but that is definitely not a Steak-um in your pictures!
Thanks again for all of your expertise! Love every recipe so far!
Hope you and your family faired well during Irene!

This looks wonderful. I like the onions on a good steak sandwich – this looks delicious an still quite healthy. You could also do this open face to shed some additional calories from the bread. I love the quick skillet recipe – this is definitely a keeper!

  34. Soo glad I found this recipe with the WW points!! Have been trying to do my own Weight Watchers recipes lately so definitely adding this one to my bookmarks! Thanks so much for posting 🙂

  35. I just made this and it was absolutely delicious! Next time I might put a little of your zero point horseradish on it for a bit more of a bite!

  38. Can't wait to make these for my husband. He loves philly cheesesteak sandwiches, but I don't make them ever. You have inspired me to try it 🙂

  39. Where would I find beef round sandwich steaks in my grocery store? Would I have to ask for them at them at the meet counter?
I really want to try my husband is such a meat guy, but I rarely make it.

  40. Gina, I just have to say… I love you. You are wonderful. Your recipes aren't just healthy but also so very delicious. You've made a better chef of me (my husband loves "WW Amy"!) and a healthier person of me, taboot. Please never stop doing this!!! 🙂

Ich freu mich schon auf nachmachen!

  42. As always….DELICIOUS!!!! Hubby loved it..he had the baguette..I opted for low-point pita and no cheese. I was just as happy! The garlic powder is genius! YUM YUM YUM 🙂

This is definitely going on this weeks dinner list. If u weren't using spray, would u use olive oil or something else?

  44. that picture of the bite/half of the sandwich looks SOOO freaking good! I really want of of these now

  45. That Looks delicious, the bread looks a little thick for me, so what I would do is pull some of the inside out . Still I will measure the filling to stay with my portion control. I am doing this on the weekend! MMMMMMMMM!

  46. Thanks for all your great recipes. Every one I've tried has been good. Have you done a skinny version of Penn Station's Teriyaki Grilled Chicken sandwich? I make my own version of the filling (with grilled chicken, sliced onions and mushrooms sauteed in low-sodium teriyaki sauce, with low-fat shredded swiss cheese to top it off) but I'd love to see proportions and points you might come up with for it. And, so far, I've only made it as a 'pizza' on a thin Boboli – haven't actually done it as a sandwich yet.
BTW, I've come to the conclusion that most ingredients that taste good together on a plate or in a sandwich usually work very well as a topping for a pre-baked pizza or pita crust – usually with some type of cheese or sauce sprinkled on top.
Think flavors and ingredients for reuben, scrambled eggs and bacon, enchiladas, stuffed peppers, swiss steak, barbacoa, BBQ chicken & onions, Cincinnati four-ways, even chicken gyros drizzled with tzatztki, moussaka, etc.
You wouldn't happen to have a recipe for a low-point slightly pizza or pita crust that could be pre-baked and might work topped with things like that would you? Thanks again!

  47. Appropriate post since one of the great makers of the Philly Cheesesteak passed away yesterday.

Angeluna- The top visited recipes (top right column) is a great place to start. I love the Chicken Rollatini, Pasta Bolognese, Lasagna Rolls, to name a few.

Anon- Sure, London broil sliced thin works well. I'm not sure if Flank would be tough but why not!

Maria, sometimes I just use reduced-fat American or Sargento reduced fat Swiss. Love them all!

These look fantastic! Philly cheesesteaks are my guilty pleasure (don't tell Drew, lol) and I always feel so guilty grabbing one from this take out place near work. I think I'm gonna try making your recipe this week…what other kinds of cheeses would you recommend if I can't find Sargento provolone?

  50. I'm sure that my Dear would love me if I made these for him! Adding it to the "recipes to make list"!

  51. Goodness that looks delicious. I'm a sucker for steak and cheese sandwiches, too. Especially Philly-style cheesesteaks!

  52. Hi Gina! I just found your site and my whole WW group is already talking about all the recipes they want to try! My question is, do you have a list of personal favorites? Everything looks so good that I don't know where to begin 😉

Thanks and keep up the great work!

Oh yes! Mushrooms, steak & cheese are a must! And smothered in onions… ohhh yum!

  54. Ran out for fresh mushrooms just to make this tonight. Loved everything about it! Sargento reduced fat provolone is my fave, so I always have it in the house. Amazing!

  55. Oh my goodness! This looks so good! Is there something else I could substitute for the mushrooms? Or could I just leave them out? I don't like mushrooms too much.

Cooking spray is 0 calories of if you spray 1 second, since I sprayed the pan four times, 4 seconds, I accounted for it.
