Hot Spinach Artichoke Dip

This healthy spinach artichoke dip is so good! I lightened it up by using fat-free Greek yogurt and half the mayo, which worked out great. It’s low in carbs and has five grams of protein per serving. If you’re looking for more ideas, I also have a cold Parmesan Spinach Dip and a Hot Spinach Dip without the artichokes. And a few more of my party app favorites are this Buffalo Chicken DipMini Bell Peppers Loaded Turkey “Nachos,” and Baked Buffalo Chicken Jalapeño Poppers.

What is spinach artichoke dip made of?

  • Artichokes: Drain one can of artichoke hearts.
  • Spinach: Thaw one 10-ounce package of frozen spinach and squeeze out all the liquid. If you want to use fresh spinach, steam it first and then squeeze it.
  • Shallots: You can use red onion if you prefer.
  • Garlic: Peel one clove of garlic.
  • Greek Yogurt: Get fat-free yogurt.
  • Light Mayo: I know some of you don’t like mayonnaise, but I promise you can’t taste it. I highly recommend using it, but if you would rather not, sub light sour cream instead.
  • Parmesan: Grate a good-quality parmesan, or swap it for Pecorino Romano, which is usually a little cheaper.
  • Mozzarella: You’ll need four ounces of shredded part-skim mozzarella, which is about one cup.
    Salt and Pepper, to taste

How to Make Spinach Artichoke Dip

  1. Food Processor: Coarsely chop the artichokes, garlic, and shallots in a food processor.
  2. Combine the remaining ingredients with the artichoke mixture.
  3. Bake: Put the spinach dip in an oven-proof dish and bake at 375°F for 20 to 25 minutes.

What to Serve with Spinach Artichoke Dip

I always put out a variety of dippers when I serve dip at a party and include veggies for a low-carb option.

  • Chips: Pita, tortilla, or bagel chips
  • Crackers: gluten-free rice crackers, or whole grain
  • Veggies: Carrots, mini bell peppers, celery, cucumber
  • Sliced Baguette

Can you make Spinach Artichoke Dip ahead?

Yes, this spinach dip is great to prep before your guests arrive. Here are a few tips:

  • You can make it one day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. Pull it out 30 minutes before baking and heat it until warm. It may take an extra five to 10 minutes to heat through.
  • If you’re serving a crowd, you can double the recipe and bake it for the same amount of time.
  • You can put the dip in a slow cooker after you bake it and keep it on low so it stays warm throughout your party.
  • If you have leftover dip, it’ll last in the refrigerator for about four days, and you can reheat it in the microwave.

Yeah baby! Bring this hot spinach and artichoke dip to your next party, no one will know it's light! Easy to make ahead then bake when you're ready to eat.

  1. This was absolutely superb! Perfectly balanced between the spinach and the artichokes, just creamy enough that it was yummy and gooey but not overpowered by the dairy at all. I absolutely loved it!

I made this dip for company and it was a big hit. Planning to take it to a party this week. I usually have all the ingredients in my pantry. Very tasty dip!

  3. I made this for Thxgiving and it was gobbled up in no time. I was surprised at how easy & quick it was to make. Follows recipe as is but always add extra garlic + red pepper flakes. I’m making it again for Xmas eve 🙂

  4. If I wanted to bake in individual ramekins vs one baking dish, should I change the baking time at all?

  5. I’ve made this (microwave version) twice in the past few months for work potlucks and it’s always a huge hit. I add a generous pinch of red pepper flakes – the entire dish is gone and I’ve been left wondering if I should double given the way everyone raves about it. Thanks for another tasty and healthy recipe!

  6. People love this dip! Nobody knows it’s on the lighter side. It’s always a hit for happy hour. Made it exactly as the recipe is written and I wouldn’t change a thing!

  7. This is the smoothest and lightest Spinach Artichoke Dip I have ever had! I always thought this was a heavy appetizer, delicious but heavy. However, with your version it is sheer perfection!

  8. This is so delicious! My family loved it and I love the lighter list of ingredients. So much less dairy and fat than other recipes, but so good.
I love your website and use it every week to plan my menus, thank you for so many delicious recipes!!

  9. Great recipe! Thank you. I have used this one before but did not leave a message. I have share it today on FB.

  10. Extremely easy to make and delicious. I didn’t have mozzarella so I just used the shredded blend I had. Also used grated parmesan Romano cheese and 12 oz of the spinach. Came out perfect.

  11. A friend brought this to a party last night, and it was delicious. When I asked for the recipe, I was pleasantly surprise by the ingredients and simplicity of the recipe.

  12. This is a household favorite! I just chop the artichokes by hand and hand mix everything by hand. I just made it with reduced fat mozzarella, minced onion flakes, garlic powder, salt, and Target brand grated cheese because that’s what I had. It was awesome! I eat it with Way Better sweet potato chips and it’s sooo good!
    Thank you for this recipe!

    1. I really like it with veggies! I use carrot sticks, slices of bell pepper, and even whole grape tomatoes.

  13. Love this delicious recipe! Has anyone made this in phyllo cups? I’m wondering how long to cook it in cups?

  14. This is so good…2 of us ate the entire batch in 2 days, whoops. I subbed half the mayo for yoghurt to make it a bit lighter too. Really good in a wrap with chicken.

I used my blender to chop the artichokes. I kept them in water but then squeezed the water out after they were chopped up.

  15. My family now requests this at every family gathering! They think it’s my “specialty”! 😂 Thanks for the great recipe!

  16. Can this be prepared in a crock pot instead? I want to prepare it and keep it in the crock pot to take with me on a day trip and just plug it back in on arrival to warm it up for a potluck the same evening. Do you think that will work? Every recipe I have tried of your is delicious, by the way! I’m looking forward to this one as well.

    1. So so so good!!! Added a few splashes of hot sauce to it, it’s delicious! Thank you, Gina, for yet another winner!!

  17. I have made this a few times now. I think it’s the best spinach artichoke dip, skinny or not! People really don’t know it low calories. Such a great recipe!

  18. Love this dip!!  Making it next weekend for a party. Do you think this will do well if I put it in a small crock pot on low, so it stays warm?  I can monitor it but don’t want it to burn.

  19. Love this dish, always an empty dish when I take it somewhere. I also add chopped water chestnuts to it for a little crunch. .

  20. If I wanted to use fresh artichokes would I need to modify the recipe and I’d so what would you recommend?

  21. I want to bring this to a work potluck. I’d need to bake it the night before & re-heat it in the dreaded microwave oven. Anyone tried this? I’d love to bring this instead of something else!

  22. Absolutely delicious!!! My 10 month old grandson who is just starting table food loved it too!!
Think this could be frozen and reheated???

I have made this 4 times already in the last 2 weeks. It is one of my families faves and is a great snack and wonderful over a chicken breast.

    1. Deanna:  Just wondering, do you warm the dip & spoon over chicken breast, or top the breast and then bake it?

  24. Made this as an appetizer for Christmas dinner – absolutely delicious!  Worthy of a holiday meal!  Fast and easy too!

  25. This dip was a huge hit when I took it to a party with crackers and veggies.. There was about a cup and a half left over when I brought it back home. We had it for dinner last night with pasta and chicken…amazing! I thinned it out with a little chicken broth, mixed with cooked pasta (use any type) and shredded chicken. A little parsley on top and it is so good as a sauce. We didn’t even add more cheese, flavorful enough.
    Just a thought…

  26. This dip is great! I make it all the time and EVERYONE raves about it – even all the young kids eat it up. Thank you for a fantastic recipe!

  27. This was good, but not creamy enough for my daughters taste. We added a block of Neufchâtel (reduced fat) cream cheese and that did the trick!!!

  29. Do you know if I could prep this in a dish one day ahead of time, wrap it up, then bake it the next night?

  30. I recently made this for a get-together, and it was a huge hit!! Amazing recipe. I couldn’t get enough of this stuff. Thanks, Gina!

  31. Yummmm this is delicious!! I made it according to the directions (regular parm instead of parm-regg), then used it to stuff some mushrooms! I sprinkled the tops with some extra parmesan cheese then baked them at 350°F for 15 mins. So good!!

  32. Seriously, every time I make this to take to a party or for when people come over, people think I am “having a splurge day.” No one knows this is a light, friendly version of an appetizer classic. It’s so creamy and gooey and delicious. And I will never tell.
Thank you so much for all of your recipes. They have been and continue to be one of the biggest contributing factors to mine and my husbands healthy lifestyle! 🙂

  33. Is it a terrible idea to cover it in the oven for 20 minutes and then taking the cover off the last 5 – 8 to brown the top up? Im going to try that. Awesome recipe

  40. This is yet another fabulous recipe, Gina: In addition to its terrific taste and nutritional jackpot it appears more complicated than it is. I made it for a birthday celebration today and decided it will make the Christmas Eve rotation in three days. Thank you, Gina.

  41. Can you advise how to do this in the crockpot? We will be at my son’s baptism and I want to have it ready when we come back

  46. This was delicious – served with pita chips. We added shrimp to the leftovers & re-baked for a main meal. Delicious the 2nd time around as well.

  47. I forgot to mention that I am "allergic" AKA detest mayo. So I drastically reduced the amount of mayo and subbed more greek yogurt. I haven't tried it yet with just greek yogurt.

  48. Ok I was the guinea pig/scientist. I made two batches and froze one. I lined the baking dish with foil and put the mixture in. Then I froze it. After it was frozen, I pulled the foil and dip out of the baking dish and rewrapped for the freezer.

Then a month or more later, I pulled the frozen packet out, tore off the foil and put it back in the dish. I let it defrost on the counter. Then I cooked as directed. And it turned out perfectly fine to me. I am so happy because I am glad I can have an appetizer ready to pop in the oven on short notice. I would like to know how it would be cooking it from frozen. That will be my next experiement.

  49. This looks amazing! Though I hate mayo and never have it in the house…. Is it totally vital to the recipe or can I skip it or just replace with a bit more yogurt? Thanks in advance!

Side note: I LOVE this page. I made the baked oatmeal this weekend and it was so good. I couldn't believe there was no sugar! Huzzah for yummy, healthy foods! 🙂

    1. There is an awesome new vegan mayo called Fabanaise; and it does not have unhealthy oils (canola) and it is so tasty! it’s made with chickpeas and sunflower oil. it is so creamy and delicious and not gnarly like the egg mayo 🙂

  50. This looks amazing! Definitely will make for Superbowl weekend. Can you suggest a good low point chip option? That is the tough part for me.

    1. I like to bake my own pita or tortilla chips! Super easy. I just buy whole grain pitas/tortillas and tear them apart and bake for about 10 minutes at 350 to crisp them up. You can add a little salt and oil pre-bake or leave them plain. Super yummy.

  51. can you make this ahead and freeze. then defrost and bake?
I want to have an appetizer handy for last minute invites.

  52. I just made this for Christmas Eve. My family raved about it. One of them had to leave the room to stop from eating it. Love 🙂

  53. I make this for Thanksgiving and Christmas because it's requested! It is so delicious. I make it with some homemade pita chips and everyone is super happy, thanks for a great recipe!

  54. I love this recipe! I first made it in 2012 and keep coming back to it. I use leeks instead of shallot and seasoned salt instead of salt and pepper. Fabulous! I always serve it with tortilla chips because those are gluten free. Thanks for such a great recipe!

This has got to be one of my favorite indulgent dips of all time…thanks for making it skinny, Gina 🙂

  56. Has anyone made this without the mayo? would something like fat free sour cream work in it's place? curious if there is a work around.

  57. I have made this twice now for parties. Everyone loves it and no one has any idea it is light. Thanks so much for this and all your recipes.

  58. I made this last night for a small get-together, and everyone loved it! I don't have a food processor yet, so I kind of pulverized the artichoke/shallot/garlic… but it still turned out great. My future sis-in-law said that a friend of hers before had used yogurt instead of cream cheese and it was awful… when I told her this used yogurt, she was pleasantly surprised!! Thank you 🙂

  59. I made this last night for company and followed the directions as written. It was so good! I like it much better than the packaged kind I usually buy and it's pretty easy to make, too. Thank you so much for posting this!

  60. Sounds lovely but if you found this from the vegetarian section please know any parmesan cheese is not vegetarian – all use lamb rennet.

  61. I have made this a few times and making again today. Just wanted to let you know how good it is and thank you for all of your wonderful recipes. Have not been disappointed ever 🙂

  62. Made this yesterday to take to a Super Bowl Party and everybody LOVED it, including myself. Served it with RF Wheat thins, and it was so yummy!! Didn't feel guilty about eating it and you did not miss the heavy cream cheese. Another winner…thanks

  63. Oh my goodness! I made this last night and my family loved it! Spin dip is my all time favorite snack and this skinny version was perfect!!

  64. Could I substitute 1/3 fat cream cheese for the light mayo? I cannot stand mayo, or knowing it is in my dip!

    1. Did you try this in the crock pot? I am thinking about making it for Thanksgiving but would love to do it in the crock! Thanks!

  65. Made this dip for a pot luck last night and it was a hit! I followed the recipe to a T and it turned out delicious:) Pretty sure no one knew it was low fat! I did not add any additional salt or pepper and there was plenty of taste to it

  66. I made this over the weekend and it was so yummy! Tasted just like the full-fat version. The only change I made was, I used a 10-oz can of artichoke hearts (not 13.5 oz) packed in oil, not water, since that's all the store had. Definitely making it for the Superbowl! Thanks for another great recipe.

  67. OMG, I am eating it raw waiting for my oven to preheat and it is awesome already! I also rolled it up in chicken breasts. Can't wait to eat tonight. YUM!!!!

  68. This is, I believe, the 4th recipe of yours I've given a go and I am, yet again, amazed at how good it is. You have enlightened me to the truth that delicious, hearty food CAN be made using healthful ingredients and without ridiculously high calorie counts. I am so very thankful to have stumbled upon your site (thanks, Pinterest!) and truly look forward to each new recipe I try. Thank you for putting your food out there for all of us to enjoy. I will rave about you to anyone who'll listen!

  69. I have made this dish twice for different events and went home with an empty dish both times! This is becoming a staple!

  70. I just served this tonight for some friends and it was great!!! Definitely a lot of flavor without feeling as heavy as full fat spinach-artichoke dip. Everyone at the party kept asking when I can make it again–thanks for the awesome recipe!

  71. Made this last Sunday for the football game and it was a huge hit! Great recipe, thanks for posting! Will definitely be making this again :).

  72. I like to substitute crushed up Triscuits instead of bread crumbs when I can, and it worked wonderfully as the topping for this fabulous dip. Thank you!!

  73. Wow! We are enjoying this while watching the world series! It is delicious! Eating it with bagel chips. I probably should be having it with carrots and celery, maybe next time! But it tastes so good! I will make this again soon!

Made it tonight. Fabulous! I had a double serving with some whole wheat pita chips and a side of shrimp cocktail for dinner, and am completely happy.

  79. I made this for a party and had some left over. So I saved it and used it the next day as the stuffing with your Chicken Rollatini Stuffed with Zucchini and Mozzarella recipe. DELICIOUS!

  80. I made this a couple of months ago and it was fantastic. I couldn't stop eating it. Thankfully, I wasn't on a diet of any kind. Now that I am, I think I'll be halving the recipe for the hubs and I so we don't overdo it. It was that good. Mouth-watering right now.

  81. I made this for Eastern since I dislike mayo so much I doubled fat free Greek yogurt and I hate to say it was not good at all. sadly you really need the mayo to keep it creamy. It came out more like curd. is there anything else that can be used to make it a little more creamier?

  82. Wow! I have tried several "regular" recipes for spinach artichoke dip and have never been satisfied. Who would have thought a lighter version was what I needed! Thanks so much!

  83. Gina i do not eat mayonnaise.. What can i substitute for the mayonnaise without increasing calories?

  84. I made this for New Year's Eve and it was a big hit! Thanks for the recipes! When my friends ask, I love to say it's a skinnytaste recipe!

  85. Remarkable! I love this recipe so much! I made it yesterday with my mom and we both loved the taste. Thanks!! We will be making this again on my dad’s birthday. Hope he likes it! We also tried the recipes at www.gourmandia.com and www.gourmetrecipe.com and the outcome turned what we imagined, the cuisines are mouth-watering. Take time to glance those sites for more interesting recipes.

  86. I'm making this dip for my sisters shower tomorrow and all they have is a microwave. I was going to bake it ahead of time and then put it in the microwave to heat it up. Would this be ok to do?

  87. I had some baby spinach in the fridge that was getting ready to hit it's expiration date, even though this one calls for frozen spinach, I decided to give it a whirl. I tossed the entire fridge bag of spinach in the bowl and since I was in a hurry, I didn't even cook it first. After combining everything, I put it in the oven. for the first 15 minutes of cooking I did pull it every 5 min. or so in order to stir to compensate for how much the spinach cooks down.
In the end I still had an absolutely delightful dip that was SO good!! I am guessing it turned out a little looser than if I had followed exactly but the taste was still all there. Thanks for another great one Gina!!

  88. Made this last night- crazy good! I loved the texture- very fluffy and creamy. Will DEFINITELY make again.

  89. I love this recipe! I tried it yesterday and it was seriously the best thing to eat while watching a football game. I'm going to blog about it tonight and have a link to your post soon!

This made a great appetizer for our Thanksgiving. I only baked 1/2 of it for just the two of us. This morning, I turned 1/4 cup of it into baked eggs florentine for only 4 points! It was heavenly!

  91. This was AMAZING. I used sour cream instead of greek yogurt (even though it increased calories and fat) and served with a baguette. Was the perfect afternoon football snack.

  92. I made this tonight and it was delicious! I made the full recipe but only baked half of it, since it was just my husband and I. Do you think the rest could be frozen? If I do freeze it, should I bake it first?

  93. Gina, I just had to tell you that I made this recipe for my husbands dental school cooking competition last week and we won the appetizer round! I added some milk and a little extra parm. and moz. cheese so that it could be kept in the crock pot instead of baked and it was a hit..obviously :)(they will never know it was a skinny recipe!) Thanks for all the great recipes!

  94. Gina — can you give me an option to replace the Parm Regg? I love it, don't get me wrong, but it's SO expensive at our local grocery store.

  98. I'm so excited to try this! I love eating spinach dip at restaurants like Chili's and Applebees but I'm sure that this will be not only healthier but also tastier. Thanks!

  99. Artichoke dip is one of my favorite things but I haven't had it in forever because it is usually so loaded with calories. I'm trying this version for sure!!

Piglet- a crockpot would be great!

Kimberly- If you cook the baby spinach, sure why not!

Natalie- I think this is better hot. I do have a recipe for cold spinach dip on here, I suggestaking that and adding some artichokes.

  104. This might be a silly question but would this be good cold? I would love to take it to a tailgate on Saturday but we will be outside and I won't have access to an oven…thanks for all the great recipes!

  105. Looks yummy. I always make mine with Neufchatel cheese, will have to try it with Greek yogurt next time!

  106. Can I use fresh baby spinach? I have a last minute potluck tomorrow and this sounds great, but I only have fresh baby spinach in the big pack from Costco.

    1. lightly steam the fresh spinach first for about 5 min. in a steamer pan over hot water, then allow to drain before adding to remaining ingredients, & it will probably taste even better, cuz of fresher ingredients.

  107. I was just wondering last night as I sat screaming at my TV whether or not you would have any light tailgate/party foods on here and popped in to have a peek this morning and I see this delicious looking artichoke dip (which is exactly the recipe I was hoping to find!) Go team!

Hope you all enjoy! If you like it hot I bet chopped jalapeño would be good in there!

In place of the yogurt for lactose intolerant, I would replace it with more mayo but this wwill increase the points and fat.

  112. This looks great! Any substitue for the freel yogurt? We have some lactose sensitive people in our family That could probably handle the cheese but not yogurt. Can't wait to try it!

    1. There are equally good soy yogurts, as well as lactose free yogurt made by the same folks that make the lactose free milk.

    2. Yogurt has low, to almost no, lactose because the bacteria have broken them down to simpler sugars. If they can tolerate cheese then they should be able to tolerate yogurt and if not likely the lactose is not the culprit.

  113. Gina, you are my hero!!!! I love spinach artichoke dip more than anything! So excited to try a lightened up version 🙂
