Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

BBQ pulled pork is one of those dishes you can serve all year round. It’s perfect for feeding a crowd at potlucks or large gatherings and doesn’t require much time in the kitchen. I created this leaner pulled pork recipe using boneless pork loin roast and homemade BBQ sauce, which gave me complete control of what was added. Try these pork carnitas for Mexican pulled pork, and check out my slow cooker recipes for more easy dinner ideas.

Pulled Pork Sandwich

Pulled Pork Ingredients

  • Pork: The best cut of meat is usually the fattier cuts but I like to use a leaner center-cut boneless pork loin roast which has less saturated fat and tastes great. Pork butt or Boston butt will also work. If it’s bone-in, add 1 more hour to the cook time.
  • Liquid: Two teaspoons each of red wine vinegar and hickory liquid smoke
  • Seasoning Spice: Garlic powder and salt, black pepper optional to taste
  • Barbecue Sauce: I love to make Kansas City BBQ sauce from scratch, but if you have a favorite BBQ sauce you like to buy, you can use that instead.

How to Make Pulled Pork in the Slow Cooker

  1. Season the Pork: Place the meat in the slow cooker and season it with vinegar, liquid smoke, salt, and garlic powder.
  2. Cover and cook the pork on low for eight to 12 hours until tender.
  3. Shred: Remove the pork, transfer it to a large dish, and pour all the liquid into a cup. Shred the pork with two forks and return it to the slow cooker with ¾ cup of the reserved liquid and the BBQ sauce.
  4. Finish Cooking: Cook the pork on high for one more hour.

What to Serve with Pulled Pork

Variations

  • Vinegar: Sub apple cider vinegar for white wine vinegar.
  • Smokiness: If you don’t have liquid smoke, season the pork with smoked paprika for a smoky flavor.
  • Pork Swap: You can use pork shoulder if you prefer.
  • BBQ Chicken: If you want to try this recipe with chicken, use boneless thighs and cook on low for four hours.
  • BBQ Sauce: If you don’t have time to make the pulled pork sauce, buy a BBQ sauce from the store – just make sure it doesn’t have high fructose corn syrup.
  • Instant Pot Pulled Pork: Follow the same directions, but cut them meat in 4 pieces and use the “Meat/Stew” function on the Instant Pot, add one cup of chicken broth, and cook for about 40 minutes high pressure until the pork easily shreds with a fork.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pork is best for pulled pork?

Pulled pork is typically made with pork shoulder, but I used pork loin for a leaner cut of meat. If you want to use shoulder meat, go for it!

Should pulled pork be covered in liquid in a slow cooker?

You don’t need much liquid to slow cook pork since it releases juices while cooking when using the low setting. I use just enough to flavor the pork along with the reserved juices of the pork and serve the extra BBQ sauce on the side. If you wish to add liquid, you can add 1 cup of chicken broth.

Do you put BBQ sauce on pulled pork before cooking?

For my recipe, I add the BBQ sauce to the shredded pork at the end. The size of your pork loin will determine how much sauce you add. Here are two things to keep in mind:

  • Pork shrinks after it is cooked, so you will want to weigh the meat cooked. I added two tablespoons of BBQ sauce for every three ounces of cooked pork, along with some reserved pork juices.
  • If your kids don’t like BBQ sauce, set some pork to the side for them before putting it back in the crock pot with the sauce.

What is the secret to pulled pork?

The secret to tender pulled pork is to cook it low and slow. That’s why the slow cooker is the perfect way to make it. How long you cook it depends on the size of your pork. I used the smallest roast I could find since I was making it for my family, so it took about eight hours, but it could take up to 12. Here are a couple of tips:

  • If your slower cooker runs too hot, you may need to add a half cup of water or broth or possibly replace the appliance.
  • Your BBQ pork may only need five to six hours. I recommend checking it at the five-hour mark – if it easily shreds, it’s ready.

What slow cooker do you use?

I have the 6-Quart Hamilton Beach Set ‘n Forget Programmable Slow Cooker. I love it because you can adjust the time you want the crock pot to cook, and it automatically turns to warm when it’s done. It also has a probe for meat that automatically shuts off when done. This slow cooker is so great that I own several!

How to Freeze Pulled Pork

You can eat leftover pulled pork for up to four days after it’s cooked. Just reheat it in the microwave until warm. For the freezer, pack it in airtight containers and freeze up to three months. You can store it in one large container or multiple smaller single-serving ones. Thaw it in the refrigerator the day before you plan on eating it.

  1. Easy prep with tasty results‼️ I did not stray from the recipe directions. My family loves the meal!.

  2. This is delicious!!! I don’t usually like pulled pork, but this is definitely a keeper. I made it for New Year’s Day, but I plan to use the leftovers for pulled pork sandwiches and baked potatoes. I will definitely make this again.

  3. Absolutely YUMMY!! I cooked the pork overnight on low so I could do my other items the next morning. It worked out perfect!

  4. Could I use pork tenderloin or would it be too dry? Or can I cook it longer with that help ? I’m looking forward to cooking this.

  5. This recipe is amazing. This is not something I would normally eat, but I was having some teenagers over for dinner and did not want to serve them takeout. Everyone loved it and it was so easy.

  6. This was absolutely delicious. My husband loves your recipes, Gina, but with this one the “Mmmmmms” started right after the first bite. It’s a definite keeper. I made the BBQ sauce and the coleslaw which were both fantastic. I served it with frozen corn on the cob. A real winner. Thank you!

  7. So good, easy and delicious. Love the liquid smoke addition. Thank you for so many great recipes. I love trying out new recipes and having an abundance of options.

  8. I need this recipe to feed 11 people but only have a 2.8 lb roast. Can I add some boneless pork chops to the slow cooker to increase the amount? Would I pull them out sooner?

  9. Easy and delicious! Even better with the coleslaw. My first time to use a pork loin roast instead of pork butt.

  10. Wow! the homemade sauce makes this recipe! i doubled the meat but forgot to get enough ingredients to double the sauce…during our pitch in many people commented on how much they liked the sauce over the batch with store bought sauce. made one in the crockpot and one in the instant pot.

  11. I loved it! I wanted to make this for weeks! Easy to make! This was better than the Pulled Pork I had at a restaurant this past weekend! Will be making it again!

  12. This is the perfect pulled pork recipe. So easy and delicious! I used it to make pulled pork nachos with corn, cheese and more BBQ sauce. I’ll be making this on repeat

  13. I had some extra pork loin in the freezer and wanted to make something new. This was delicious. I even made her BBQ sauce recipe too. So good!

  14. Needed something substantial when my daughter’s boyfriend came to dinner. It was a busy day so having this already done when we got home was amazing! Everyone loved this.

  15. Ah, Gina, you just answered my question. We are having a friend coming over for dinner on Tuesday and was undecided as to what to make and this is PERFECT, I can throw it in the crockpot before work and just whip up a limey slaw and corn on the cob. I’ve fixed this before and we loved it. To make things more interesting that night, my husband’s friend will be dropping off their golden retriever, it looks like she will be staying here while they are on vacation. Maybe they would also enjoy some pulled pork before they head out. Yum! I think it’s going to be one of the most fun Tuesdays around here on record!

  16. I’ve made pulled pork before with a lean cut of pork and it always tastes dry. How do you prepare it so it doesn’t dry out?

  17. Could you please always include regular oven instructions for recipes as well?
Love your recipes and do not want to miss trying them when I do not have the other equipment.

  18. I use your recipes daily. Many thanks for so many slow cooker healthy options. I really enjoy the ease of this recipe and that it makes plenty of food. I usually freeze some of it.

I ordered my groceries from Instacart. And instead of bringing me a pork loin roast. She brought me pork loin chops in the same weight. Is it the same? Can we still use it to make this? I’m so bummed. I was just about to throw it in the crock pot when I realized she got the wrong thing for us. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  20. I feel like I did someone wrong. I bought a 2.5 on center pork loin. I cooked on low for 5 hours. Then shredded (it was hard to shred). Then cooked for another two hours in bbq sauce. Would appreciate some advice!!!!

    1. If your loin was very lean ..which a center cut usually is … it would need more time to cook. It is the fat in pork and beef (marbling) that makes it moist and tender and shred-able … anytime it’s hard to shred … allow it more time to cook. Camille below did 7 hours …. all pigs are different. BBQ can rarely be cooked too long at low temperature.

  21. Great and so easy! I did 7 hours on low and then drained and shredded, added back the meat and 3/4 cup of drippings and BBQ sauce and cooked for the last hour. Will make again!

  22. Another fantastic dish that pleases the very different palates in this house! I do it in the Instant Pot and it comes out beautifully. So flavorful, and the KC BBQ Sauce (also from this site) really adds another dimension, and this KC woman approves! Making this tonight with Brown Sugar Baked Beans (another fave) and Baby Red Potato Salad with Apple (also Skinnytaste, but this one’s a first), This will be the fourth time we have this. Oh, and the meat comes out so tender you don’t even have to shred it with forks – I just use a pair of tongs and squish it up right in the pot. Works like a charm (I really hate shredding meat with forks!)

    1. Hi Becky, When you use instapot, are you still slow cooking or pressure cooking it?
How long did it take and did you use all other ingredients and pork loin per the recipe?
      Thanks, Melissa

my Instapot has a slow cooker function… has anyone used this function and if so how much time did you let it cook?

      1. I used the slow cooker function on the Instapot. I set it to “regular” which is the same as low, and cooked it the same time Gina lists on the recipe – 9.5 hours. Turned out great!

  23. This pulled pork is absolutely amazing! I made it with sugar free BBQ sauce to reduce the calories since I’m on WW. My husband kept coming out to the kitchen talking about how good the house smelled! I only had a 1.25 lb tenderloin so I cut the whole recipe in 1/2. I wish I had more for leftovers. A+++!!

  24. This is our “go-to” pulled pork recipe. It’s delicious and easy to make on busy weekdays. I like that it’s not overly saucy, but just the perfect amount. I heat some extra sauce for my family to add on top. My husband and kids eat it with a bun,  but I just eat it with a side of coleslaw.

  25. I have been wanting to try this recipe for ages and I’m so glad I finally did! It was SO easy and really delicious. I had a bigger piece of meat, almost 4lbs. I started it when I left for work it was ready to shred at 10 hours. My whole house smelled amazing when I came home and my family absolutely loved it. Thank you for another winner!!

  26. This is my go to pulled pork recipe. My family, 3 kids included, love it. I always make extra and keep some in the freezer for a ready made meal. Thank you!

  27. How long do you cook the 2.5lb pork on low? The recipe says 8 to 12 hours, plus another hour, but the video says 6.

  28. Fixed this for supper. It is a keeper for sure. I’ve tried several healthier pulled pork recipes and this is the one I will use from now on

  29. I cooked this in the instapot! I did 50 minutes on the meat/stew setting because my roast was about 3.25 lbs. I also used the barbecue sauce recipe and used all of it in the shredded pork probably because my roast was a bit bigger than the recipe called for. I used maple syrup instead of molasses in the barbecue sauce and it was excellent! I also made the skinny taste baked beans to go along with it but instead of using the instapot since it was already in use, I just smeared the beans on the stove top on low while the roast was cooking. I added some of the barbecue sauce to the beans to flavor them and had to add a little bit of water towards the end of simmering just to add a bit more liquid!. All three recipes are excellent!!!!

      1. My husband and I loved this. I used Sweet Baby Ray’s ( too tired to make BBQ sauce) which was very good. Served with homemade coleslaw. I can’t wait for leftovers! Thanks for posting.

This looks amazing and I’d love to try it! But can you also share the cole slaw recipe that in the photo?

  31. Sooooooo yummy. I kind of combined this recipe with the Pork Carnitas recipe and made it my own…I used Pork Shoulder and pan roasted it before putting in the slow cooker. My slow cooker runs hot and I noticed others had issues with it coming out dry so I added 3/4 cup chicken broth to the pot. I also cut slices in the pork and shoved in a bunch of garlic slivers and then subbed Smoked Paprika for the Liquid Smoke and Cider Vinegar for the Red Wine Vinegar. It was so moist and the flavour was heavenly, it didn’t even really need BBQ sauce!

  32. I saw that several people asked about making this with chicken, but no answers. Has anyone tried it with chicken over the years since this was originally published?
My husband does not like pork. Thanks!

  33. I made this in my instant pot using the slow cooker function. It came out wonderful, and my brother asked to take home half of the leftovers.

  34. This recipe was delicious! (I’m not even really a pork fan but my husband loves pulled pork so I thought I’d try it.)

Because so many people had the ‘dry crockpot issue’ I started with 1/2 cup of chicken stock in the bottom of my slow cooker but otherwise made no changes to the recipe. It turned out great.

I am making it now. I didn’t have liquid smoke (threw out too many over years!) so used smoked paprika. Your thoughts?

  37. If I used smoked sea salt instead of liquid smoke how much should I use? Would that change the amount of regular salt?

  38. I just made this but it came out to 1 1/2 cups.  I masured everything and simmered for 25.  Has anyone else gotten a smaller amount that it’s supposed to make?

  39. So after much research I did this in the instant pot.. with pork tenderloin. Came out great! Followed the directions with the same measurements and put it on high pressure for 40 minutes, let it natural release for about 15. I did put it back in just to warm with some liquid and sauce. It was great 🙂

  40. Can you substitute the Kansas City BBQ Sauce for a different one? I imagine I would need to adjust the SP’s as well.

    This recipe looks great!

    1. I like to use G Hughes Sugar Free Hickory Barbecue Sauce; it only has 10 kcal/2 tbls, and it’s delicious. I think it tastes similar to Sweet Baby Rays. I also like Stubb’s but some of their sauces are 45 kcal and some are 65 kcal…it has good flavor though! They both come in glass bottles, which I like; I’m sure we all get plenty of micro plastics already.

  41. Is it just me or is the number for Saturated fat missing?  All I see is “g”.  Oh, and this recipe is AMAZING!!!

  42. Did the recipe forget to tell us to put water or some liquid in the pot initially?  I followed the directions, but my pork came out dry and hard after 6 hours in the crockpot with barely any liquid!

    1. Avatar photo
      Mary Beth Myers

I wondered this too! I just put mine on and I’m thinking I should add some liquid! ????

      1. I was wondering the same thing. It says to reserve 3/4c liquid and the ingredients don’t include liquid.

    2. Avatar photo
      Valerie Baginski

I didn’t have any liquid at the bottom at 6 hour mark. By then the natural juices were gone. I’m guessing it cooked too long so I just added 3/4 cup of water and the BBQ sauce and mixed to let it continue cooking for the last hour. It still turned out good but next time I will add some liquid at the start and not cook as long.

  43. So easy and soooo delicious!  You are right the aroma while cooking is amazing.  Thanks for another great recipe.

  44. How can I make this in the Instant pot? Not sure if I have 6 hours to spare, and have a Texas themed potluck Monday.  Can’t wait for your new book!!!

  45. I was wondering if you will ever try this in the instant pot? I got one for Christmas and have fallen in love with it. If this could be updated for the instant pot my whole family would thank you! 🙂

This is really good however I wasn’t thinking (not a great cook lol) and put all the sauce in the crockpot…I came up with 8 points total. Does that seem right?

  50. hi Gina,
I have a 10 pound pork roast instead of 2.5. Would in quadruple the seasonings in the crockpot or is that too much?

    1. What kind of crock pot do you have that will fit a 10 lb pork roast????

When I have to buy a huge roast like that I just cut it in thirds and save two pieces for a future meal.

  52. Hi Gina! I’m prepping my meal plan for the week and am planning to include this recipe. I was trying to figure out the new freestyle points but Saturated Fat isn’t included in the nutritional information. Do you happen to know what that number is? For now, I’ll just use points plus value. Thanks for all of your amazing recipes. Have a great Sunday!

  53. Can this be made with pork tenderloin? Also, how long many hours would it take if I put the slow cooker on low?

  54. For those asking for Instant Pot timing, we cooked 45 min on high in Instant Pot and it turned out great. Added sauce and afterwards and did not cook any longer.

    1. Thank you as I’m getting ready to make in the instant pot right now . Cooking a meal in this snow storm just in case power goes out my family if 6 will have a meal . Can’t  take a chance in the slow cooker today just in case there’s the every 10-20 minutes  power outages

On the menu: your pulled pork, your BBQ sauce, your slaw, BBQ wings made with your BBQ sauce and potato sausage nd egg enchiladas in white gravy. Oh I almost forgot, cauli- tots. Thanks for everything, it was a great day!

      1. Gina, I would love to share a photo of the table with you. Fyi, the wings came out looking/ tasting sooo good. They were shiny and delish! So cheep to make too!

Can apple cider vinegar be used in place of red wine vinegar and worcestershire sauce in place of liquid smoke?

  63. Has anyone tried this with a different vinegar if you are out of red wine vinegar? I have apple cider vinegar and white vinegar.

  64. Hi!
I love this recipe! I have a question though. When I add in my recipe builder on WW I can’t find exactly “boneless pork loin roast”. So what type of pork do you use to calculate the smart points value?

  65. Your recipes are amazing and fill our dinner menu almost every week! I love this recipe and have made it multiple times to rave reviews! I am needing longer crockpot recipes for the whole day while at work. Have you ever tried this on low for longer hours like 8 to 10?

  66. To everyone that had a dried out roast…I honestly don’t know why anyone would cook this on high. 8 hours on low and it’s perfect.

  67. I have made this recipe more times than I can count but am doubling it for the first time.  Is it the same cook time, measurements, etc?  Thanks!

  68. In the top photos, you have some sort of slaw on your pork. I searched the website but can’t seem to find it. What slaw recipe did you use?

    1. This was in the commentary above in response to your slaw question –

I made a quick slaw with shredded cabbage, carrots, a little vinegar, salt and a touch of olive oil and it was perfect.

  69. Hey Gina – I’m going to make this later this week. Any tips for making it in an Instant Pot instead of a slow cooker?

      1. Thank you Gina gonna try in the instant pot now ! Ty for all your wonderful recipes . Own two of your cookbooks and have printed all my tried recipes . What wonderful recipes you share . Thankful

  70. Gina, did you know that your recipes are changing lives? I found your site about midway through  my journey to lose 100 pounds. I’m down 80 pounds now and your fabulous recipes have a lot to do with being able to stay on Weight Watchers. Thank you so much! I’m looking forward to going the distance (and beyond!!) with your wonderful food.

  71. Thank you for updating for SP! This has been a go-to recipe for me for a couple of years, but this is the first time I’ve made it since starting Smart Points, and my old printed copy didn’t have the sat. fat I needed for the calculator, so thank you for doing that for me! This is one of my family’s favorite meals–along with your BBQ sauce!

  72. Just wanted to thank you for his recipe. Have made it multiple times now and it’s been fantastic each time. I almost feel it’s a shame to add BBQ sauce it’s so good. Last night I just left it off. It even got rave reviews from my husband….who rarely raves about anything. ????

  73. I made this for a work potluck the other day and my co-workers loved it. I didn't tell them that it was from a healthy recipe until later when they asked for the recipe. I ended up doubling the recipe and it was perfect. I was told by a co-worker that this pulled pork was one of the best she has ever had, and she's a big fan of BBQ food. The Homemade Kansas City BBQ Sauce got some raving complements too! Such a great sauce. ~Nakita

    1. May I ask if you doubled the recipe using one slow cooker? Also, may I ask how you adjusted the cooking times? Any other tips? I’m planning to double the recipe too.

      1. Sure, you make want to add more time for a larger piece of meat. Maybe 2 to 3 hours more?

  74. Hi! I am a HUGE fan of your website! I have a question regarding this recipe. When it says to add "3/4 cup of the reserved liquid and the BBQ sauce (for every 3 oz cooked pork)," are you referring to just the BBQ sauce or both the BBQ sauce AND the reserved liquid? I am making this tomorrow (2/24/16) and I am very excited! I have loved every recipe I have made from this website!:)

  75. Hi Gina,

I just wanted to tell you first off Thank YOU for all of your amazing recipes, but second this is my go to party meal. Everyone always asks for the recipe and loves it! I will be making this for New Years Eve tonight! Thank you so much! I love your first cookbook and cannot wait for the second 🙂

  76. If I would like to make this recipe for say 15 people, each eating 1 or 2 sandwiches. How can I adjust this recipe? How much pork loin should I use? How much BBQ sauce should I make?

  77. Hmm… If I use only half of the amount of pork, do I half the cooking time?? I'm a total crock pot newbie! 🙂

  78. Gina @ Skinnytaste is it possible to make this Thurs night, transport to a throwaway container once it's done, to then re-heat in the oven for dinner Fri night? Any suggestions? I don't want it to dry out! Doing this for a Ski Weekend where pre-planning and prepping is key!

I made this the other night with the homemade sauce that is with the recipe and it turned out AWESOME!!!

  80. I made your pull pork recipe with 2 1/2 pounds of boneless pork ribs yesterday. I was a little leery about the small amount of liquid but I took a leap of faith that it would work. Oh my! And I made the Kansas City Style BBQ Sauce ~ it perfectly complemented the pork! Served it for supper last night, froze two packages with two cups in each for a quick supper at a later date and have almost 2 cups left in the fridge for supper tonite. Served it on homemade buns! Yummmmmm! This is a winner! I will be making this again and again!

  81. This is seriously my husbands and my favorite pulled pork! It's so good I even made it when my in-laws came for a week to visit and I pulled out all of my best recipes for them to eat and this made it in that line-up! My in-laws loved and wanted the recipe (2 new fans Gina!). I unfortunately can't use the Pork Loin roast because where I live it's very hard to find so I use pork shoulder instead. It's still soooo good!

  82. I am hoping to double this recipe for a party. any suggestions for size of pork roast and cooking time?

  83. Hi all,
I'm just trying this recipe for the first time and I think I may have missed something. we are 5.5 hours in and there is no liquid in my crock pot! should I have added anything in addition to the salt, spices, liquid smoke, and vinegar?
thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions/ideas.

    1. There shouldnt be a lot of liquid but not having any is odd. Perhaps maybe your crock pot gets too hot?

  84. I'm making this right now. I couldn't find liquid smoke though so I'm hoping it still tastes as good as it sounds without it!

  85. I've made this twice and both times (while it tasted great) there was no liquid to remove and then add back in. Am I missing an ingredient or something? Where would the liquid come from? Thanks for this blog – I just began cooking and my family and I have loved everything we have tried!

  86. I have a pulled pork crockpot recipe that calls for the BBQ sauce to be cooked with the pork for the whole time. I see where your recipe says to add the sauce after cooking. Have you tried adding the sauce at the beginning, and was that successful?

  87. pulled pork tenderloin in the crockpot has literally changed my life! my husband requests it constantly

  88. Fixed this for my boyfriend… He RAVED how amazing it was! Not to mention the aroma that filled my house was mouth watering. Served with a light vinaigrette coleslaw and green beans. Thank you!

  89. Quick question- I need to make this for a group of 20 so I was wondering if you have ever doubled the recipe? Any advice? Thank you!!

I just made this (pulled pork is my favorite!) and it's amazing. I would like to look into making larger amounts and storing it, say enough for ~15 servings.

The meat and sauce would roughly double, of course, but would I also double the vinegar, garlic powder, etc? Is there anything I WOULDN'T increase? What about cooking time? (Sorry, I'm new to cooking. Your site has been a godsend!)

  91. This is amazing – I will make it over and over again. I had to double the recipe cause I had a crowd. I used 5 pounds of pork and cooked it on high for 6 hours. Then I shredded it and after adding the bbq sauce (Carolina Sweet), I cooked it on low for another 3 hours. It was amazing. I will make this over and over again! Thank you!

    1. Do you have a standard size slow cooker?  Just wondering because I’d like to use 5lbs as well if possible.

You weren't kidding when you said it smells incredible. I have my meat in the slow cooker and I'm salivating at the thought of tonight's dinner! 🙂 Thanks!

Perfect! I am so making this this weekend for my son's 1st birthday. Thanks so much for the recipe. My mouth is watering looking at your pictures. Pinning now.. making friday! 🙂 I'll let you know how they turn out!

    Krista @ joyfulhealthyeats

  94. My house smells fantastic. I made the Kansas City barbecue sauce followed by homemade potato rolls. So good! Now if Friday will just hurry up & get here to have the pulled pork.

  95. Does anyone else know the answer to the above comment about the barbecue flavored pork? We want to make it tonight! Will it change the fat/calories/etc and do we still use the liquid smoke?

    Thank you!

  96. Gina, my husband went shopping for the pork center cut. He got that but got a barbecue flavored version which says it already has smoke flavoring. We also bought the liquid smoke. Will having the barbecue flavored pork change the calories/fat or change the amount of any of the ingredients needed? We can always return for a regular. Thanks!!

  97. I have never had a bad experience with your recipes, but today was time for a first, I guess. I put my pork into the crock pot like the recipe said, and six hours later it is completely inedible. I can't even shred it because it is so dried out, and there is no liquid left. I don't feel like I did anything wrong, so it must be a discrepancy between our crock pots. Mine is obviously manufactured by the devil and operates only at Hell temperatures.

    1. I have made this several times and have the exact same problem, there is never any liquid remaining after the cook time. I have had to add way more than the recipe calls for.

    2. The problem is a) it's pork loin roast, which responds better to fast cooking methods, and b) that vinegar is added. Newsflash: Vinegar is a powerful astringent! That means it not only dries things out, it toughens them, too.

Use the same spices, but leave off the vinegar. And replace the pork loin roast with a Boston butt or picnic ham. Put it in your slow cooker fat side up, then cover the whole thing in Dr. Pepper or root bear.

It will turn out right, every single time.

    3. I had the same issue! With about an hour to go in the initial 6 hour cook time, I started smelling something burning. I went and checked on the pork and the liquid that was in there before was all burnt onto the bottom and the pork is basically a brick. 🙁

  98. this looks amazing!

if i have an unthawed tenderloin at home and not a roast, would i be able to make this?

  99. Wonderful recipes, Gina! I've made several of your recipes and have really enjoyed them. My 3 year old liked the baked chicken nuggets so much that she wanted me to make them for breakfast!! I made this once before which was so good, but didn't have the liquid smoke so I'm excited to try it again! I had a question about the pulled pork. If I use a larger piece of meat should I times the recipe say 3 times if I make 7 1/2 pounds of meat? Thanks for all your fun ideas and helpful hints!

  100. Wonderful recipes, Gina! I've made several of your recipes and have really enjoyed them. My 3 year old liked the baked chicken nuggets so much that she wanted me to make them for breakfast!! 101. This was a complete disaster yesterday. The pork cooked but did not shred like it was supposed to…any thoughts? It was a bit dry and "chunky."

  102. My sister told me about your website, and it is amazing! I used several of your recipes for my super bowl party. Everyone was surprised when I told them how "skinny" all of my dishes were. I am going to make this tonight, and surprise my hubby with a skinny pulled pork! I am so excited! Plus, I don't have to cook the pork before putting it in the crock pot. Thank you! And keep up the good work!

  103. Made this 2 nights ago with a 3.5lb pork shoulder roast. So easy and delicious. Used the BBQ sauce linked on the page, was very easy to make, never made a BBQ sauce before. Followed another poster's idea of shredding in the Kitchen Aid Mixer and was super fast. Ended up using the whole recipe of sauce for the roast I cooked and was perfect. 4 of us ate almost half the recipe and the rest went into the freezer for another quick dinner in a few weeks. Served with Gina's Asian Cabbage Slaw. Aloha, Kiara

  104. LOVE! Made this along with your twice baked potatoes (my BF is a big eater) and it was a hit!!! Already planning on making it again. Thanks so much for your recipes, I look forward to checking your site every morning 🙂

  105. I made this today (for dinner tonight) and like earlier posts I had plenty of liquid until about hour 5 and then it started to dry up. Luckily I noticed and added a teeny bit of water and took out the pork for shredding. So mine cooked on high 5 hours and then the last hour in the bbq sauce – which is amazing and worth the time to make!! The smell in the house is amazing!!!!! At first I thought the bbq sauce would be too sweet but added to the pork it is the right balance. My husband is so excited about this recipe.

  106. I made this tonight and it was so delicious. The simple ingredients ended up with amazing flavor! I was skeptical about not having enough cooking liquid but it was perfect. This will be my go to method for cooking pulled pork! My whole family loved it. Thanks for a great recipe!

  107. Just a warning – know your slow cooker!!! I was skeptical about the lack of liquid, but based on all successes in the comments above I decided to give it a try. By the first hour there was a nice layer of liquid on the bottom and I was thrilled. It DOES smell amazing. BUT I left the house and when I came back at almost 5 hours into the 6 hour cooking time the liquid had dried and burnt to a crisp with smoke coming from the slow cooker. I removed the burnt parts of the pork and although it was very dry the flavor seemed to have potential. The BBQ sauce is delicious! I may try it again. Next time I'll only prepare it when I'm going to be at home and I'll either cook it on Low or reduce the time.

Good point, sounds like your slow cooker runs too hot. My old one was the same way and I had to replace it.

I made this and it was AMAZING! I added more vinegar for us but seriously the best pork ive ever had. I made cole slaw and corn on the cob with it. So Good! I love this site, your recipes are always delicious and healthy 🙂

  110. I made this today and it was so good! We bought a three pound pork long but after three hours I checked it with a meat thermometer and it was almost over-cooked, so I turned it off and let it rest for about an hour and a half. I added the barbeque sauce and cooked it again for about half an hour. So good! I definitely recommend cutting down the cooking time because you do not want it to get overcooked. We had on sandwiches with broccoli slaw and your cauliflower mash on the side. What a great meal!

  111. I love this recipe, but I never get enough liquid at the end of the 6 hours, its only about 1/4 of a cup. Any idea what I can do to prevent this?

  112. Dear Gina,
I'm LOVING your recipes!! I made this pulled pork today and instead of liquid smoke (which I did not have, and my kids aren't real fond of it anyway) I sprinkled some smoked paprika on the pork loin and added a tablespoon of water (to compensate for the missing liquid). Everyone raved about this! Thank you for sharing all your wonderful ideas.

  113. I am not sure where to go to tell you that your website has radically changed my life. I am back on WW (lapsed lifetime member). Having raised 5 children and working a job I love, I had left cooking behind. Back on WW–and after purchasing TWO cookbooks, which were big disappointments, I have found your website. I have benefited more than I can say. I am cooking again–doing this recipe today, and the mini meatloaves. I love the pictures, and the freezing recipes. My husband and I thank you!

    always trying

Gina, made this recipe tonight. I thought it would be something different leading into Thanksgiving. I did not remove the fat from the Pork Loin before cooking (the piece I purchased did not have much fat on it). After the pork cooked in the slow cooker for 6 hours, I placed the pork on a plate to shred it, the fat fall off first and I threw it away. I had about 1 1/2 cups of reserved liquid. I did use my smaller slow cooker, 3 quarts. The BBQ sauce was delicious. I did eliminate the liquid smoke from the BBQ. This sometimes is an overpowering flavor. The pulled pork and BBQ was delicious. My husband raved about it. Cleaned his plate! Wonderful recipes. Thank you.

  116. Just made this last night and it was so delicious!! I didn't have any molasses so I almost got lazy and didn't make the sauce….so glad I went to the store and made your BBQ Sauce because it was also delicious! I am starring to use this site regularly now for meal planning. My boyfriend even loves the recipes and is always shocked when I tell him it's skinny. One thing about this recipe though….like others, I only got 1/4 cup of liquid. Still came out great though, thanks so much for for all the great recipes!

  117. I used Wright's Hickory Liquid Smoke because that's all they had in the store and it turned out really great. My boyfriend, who doesn't always eat healthy and certainly has consumed a plethora of pulled porks, stated it was "phenomenal". I got many compliments. Thanks for another winner.

    1. I’m attempting to make this but the cook time at the top of the recipe says 7 hours total. But the instructions say to cook 10-12 then another hour after shredding?? Which is it? 10-12 seems a lot for a lean center cut pork LOIN. Should the recipe be for a pork Shoulder?

  118. I chose this recipe to feed a ton of people at a church lunch. I have never, ever made pulled pork so it was a bit of a risk I was taking to feed that many people! The reasons I chose this one?:

    1. Skinnytaste recipes are ALWAYS good from my experience. I haven't been disappointed by a single one.
    2. It's made from scratch…even the sauce, which is delicious.
    3. Very good WW point+ value…and again, I always think your recipes are fantastic for the amount of points they are!

It was absolutely delicious. I can't wait to make it again for my family. I chose pork tenderloins and a centre cut…the tenderloins were amazing. I am going to give it another go! I made a bunch of extra sauce, too! 🙂

  119. This is FANTASTIC! Smelled good, looked good, and tasted GREAT! It's very satisfying for only 5 pts. on WW – put it on a wheat roll, with some cooked brussel sprouts as a side – love this meal. It is going to become one of my staples!

  120. This was so good! At the last minute I realized I didn't have Worchestershire sauce so I used steak sauce. My slow cooker is pretty fast so I just cooked on high for 4 hours and then shredded the pork and refrigerated it with the sauce. So awesome! This is an instant hit. I am going to try it with a vinegar based NC BBQ sauce next time.

  121. Good thing I just read the 9/28/12 reply from mp! I was going to allow the roast to cook for the length of time on directions, I decided to take a peek early @ about 5.5 hours and it was almost burnt!! Maybe I should not have removed the fat because there was zero juice and the meat seems really dry. )-: Hopefully it can be salvaged with the sauce. (And I used a pork loin roast about 2.2 lbs.) So far disappointed.

    1. Good news!! After letting the meat sit in the bbq sauce for a few hours before dinner, it turned out to be actually very good. My husband did not think it tasted dry at all. He had 2 sandwiches. lol Next time will probably add a little fat free chicken broth in crock pot while cooking. And check it after 4.5 hours.

  122. This was absolutely delicious pork, Gina. Thanks for the recipe and the guidance. (I will admit I fiddled with the BBQ sauce, since I come from a BBQ state! haha) Finally I make something yummy in the slow cooker, thanks to you!

  123. Just a tip for those making this – I used a super lean tenderloin and it was perfectly tender and falling apart after about 4 1/2hrs on high. I never knew you could get pulled pork like this from a tenderloin! Delicious : )

Yuuuummmm! Made this tonight for a group of friends with some corn on the cob. I had lemonade with mine, made a great late-summer dinner. Delicious.

  125. Ok, so just to clarify the points+ value- the points are for the pork cooked in the BBQ sauce PLUS another 2 Tbsp of sauce? I just want to make sure I'm figuring it out right. 🙂

  126. I made this last night and it was wonderful! I suggest not making it when you are going to be home all day, it smelled so amazing that I was starving and wanted to eat all day!

  127. Gina, I found organic chuck roast on sale, so I bought it just to have. Do you think I could use that instead?

  128. Gina, your site is awesome and every recipe I have made from your site is delicious. I plan meals using your site almost every night of the week. With that said I made this recipe and my family loves it. My son's b-day party is this weekend and I asked him if there is a favorite food he wants me to make. He requested this one. Today I am making 4 roasts so I have a few crockpots going. My house smells so good right now.

  129. Gina, your recipes are our "go to" site. My family and I have made many of your recipes-all are fabulous! Thank you for your hard work in creating tasty, healthy recipes. We substitute Quinoa for pasta, including your mac & cheese recipes. I am making your Slow Cooker Pulled Pork for dinner tonight. Drooling as I type…..

  130. You add the BBQ sauce after the first round of cooking then cook for one more hour.

I love pulled pork and this meal has been a hit every time I've made it. My guy friend said I could put our local BBQ restaurant out of business with the recipe (and this was before I told him where I got the recipe!)

  131. Am I suppose to add 1 cup of the barbecue sauce into the crockpot with the pork initially? The instructions leaves the 1 cup of barbecue sauce out.

I made this for my hubby's 40th party, it went over big time and was so easy to make taste amazing!

  133. This is so wonderfully delicious! I use a 1lb loin instead and cook it for 3 hours on high. After I shred it and add the BBQ sauce, (1/2 cup) I switch my slow cooker to warm. I do not continue cooking it or it seems to dry out. My 3 y/o and 15 month old will eat the pork until they are stuffed!

  134. Here's a stupid question. When I make pulled pork the recipe calls for me to cover the pork with water. It doesn't say to do that here but I just wanted to make sure it wasnt some unspoken slow cooker rule. Love your recipes by the way. Thanks for sharing all the deliciousness!

  135. Made this today using 2 lbs. pork tenderloin. Cooked it for 5 hours on high after reading comments that suggested longer would dry out. Meat shredded perfectly. I added bottled BBQ sauce (maybe I'll try homemade next time) along with what juices it made (didn't measure because I shredded right in crockpot). It's moist and flavorful. My traditional recipe uses a pork shoulder roast. I don't miss all the fat at all, I'm using tenderloin from now on! Thanks Gina.

    1. Forgot to add that once I added sauce I left on "keep warm" rather than continue cooking. Maybe this is what helped keep it moist and it was hot when time to serve.

  136. Gina, I made this and the meat came out really tough. I've had a hard time making slow cooker pulled pork or chicken well. Is a pork loin roast, different than a pork loin? I used a pork loin, and it did not shred well at all. Maybe my slow cooker cooks too fast? Any ideas?

  137. I'm cooking this right now and it smells delicious! I took the pork out of the cooker to shred it and only had under 1/4 cup of the juices left over… I believe the recipe said there were supposed to be 3/4 cup leftover, although there's less than that added during preparation. I was just wondering if I had done this correctly. Either way it looks like it will be a great recipe.

  138. HI Gina.
I've made many things in the crock pot. Most meat recipes I believe I was able to put it in the crock pot frozen. Can this pork be started from frozen or does it need to be thawed first?

    Thanks

  139. I made this today and it was a BIG hit! Made your BBQ sauce, too – it was sooooooo good! I love this site and use lots of your recipes. LOVE it!

  140. I made this w/ a 4lb pork shoulder roast. I kept all the fat on the roast and picked it off after it was cooked. I used a whole batch of the Kansas City Style BBQ Sauce. My boyfriend loved this…perfect Memorial Day dinner. Thanks for the great recipes!

  141. I am making this recipe right now… but the liquid is boiling in my crock pot and I'm afraid it's cooking too fast. I've lowered the temperature to low and will cook it longer. Hope it turns out tender!

  142. I just finished making this though I had to make some changes.

I couldn't find just a center cut of pork loin, I would have had to buy the half cut and then cut out the center. So instead, I decided to try pork tenderloin. I see there are a lot of questions about the tenderloin so here are my results:

I overcooked my tenderloin :/ It still tastes palatable and my fiance with still eat it because he eats everything, but it's definitely overcooked. If you use the tenderloin, I would suggest you lower the cooking time by at least one hour if not shorter. Maybe lower it by 90 minutes and keep an eye on it. I only got about 1/4 cup of juices because I cooked it too long.

  143. I made this over the weekend – not only was is DEEEElicious, but it was sooo easy!! My husband could not stop bragging about me and this pulled pork while we were visiting with family on Mother's Day. Looks like a winner!

  144. Made this recipe for a dinner party on Monday – and this was a HIT. I love being able to be in control of what I'm eating and your website really helps me do that. Your recipes are all great and I love being able to share it with others. As always thank you for another great recipe!!!

  145. In the crockpot as I type; smells wonderful! Hardest part of my new eating healthy lifestyle was giving up my favorite…BBQ. I'm hoping this ends today! I did substitute No Added Salt Tomato Sauce and Paste as sodium is huge for me and it cut the count way down. Can't wait to try this tonight!!

  146. WOW!!!! I made this recipe yesterday, and we ate it tonight for dinner and all I can say is WOW!!! this was unbelievably delicious! My husband pretty much licked his plate clean. Your recipes are amazing. thank you so much for this website it is a god send!

  147. Gina I love all your recipes and easy step by step instructions. I really want to try this one, but I don't have a crock pot. Please provide instructions on how to do this on the stove top or in the oven perhaps?

  148. All put together in my crockpot in the fridge ready to start in the morning for dinner tomorrow! I have made this before…it is a good one!

  149. Hi Gina, I am making this recipe as we speak, but just a heads up, I checked mine at the 4 hour mark and the pork was already shredding apart, so I just shredded it all up and it's on low now with the sauce mixed in. I followed the directions, I guess my crock pot may get a little hotter. My house smells AMAZING!! can't wait to dig in!!! I'm making Cilantro Lime Tilapia Tacos later this week. My family and I love your recipes!!

  150. First off, I want to say I love all your recipes and I recommend your site to people all the time. I am making the pulled pork for dinner tonight and was so excited! I was going back and forth from the laptop to the stove adding ingredients and I mistakenly put TABLESPOONS instead of teaspoons of the red wine vinegar, liquid smoke, sea salt and garlic powder into the crock pot with the pork. I hope that it is not ruined by being too overpowered with the seasonings. Any ideas on how to fix this? Keeping my fingers crossed, it smells delicious!

    1. Update: It's a little salty, but still soooo good! Once I add the BBQ sauce (which is also amazing, btw) it should be fine.

  151. Hi Gina, Just want to say you and your recipes are awesome! I have a binder of all my "Gina's Recipes"….my husband says "That girl can cook!" 🙂 We thank you for sharing your healthy and delicious recipes and for all the work you put into it. Made this pulled pork and the sauce….oh so good! Wish I would have thought to make the Bolo De Fubu cake for desert (another favorite)…next time.

  152. This and the KC BBQ sauce rocked!! And Gina….you rock! Thank you so much for sharing your fantastic recipes and saving me from falling off the healthy lifestyle wagon! 😀

Gina, is there a difference between a pork "tenderloin" and pork "loin" if there is could you use either? I have a pork tenderloin in my fridge now and would love to do this but afraid it will dry out since there really is no fat.

    1. I've done tenderloin in the crock pot too before, you'll be fine. You might want to cut down on the cooking time because most likely if you have 1 tenderloin it is slightly under or at 1 lb in weight. The original recipe has 2.5 lbs of pork.

  154. OH. MY. GOSH. This was SO good, Gina! Even my picky BBQ eater (hubby) was all over this and the simple slaw I made. THANK YOU. 🙂 I wish I could hug you for all the great meals you've been responsible for in my house in the last month and a half. (Very Glenn Close moment, i know. 😉 Still true.

Wow, that pulled pork looks like perfection – it's been so long since I've had tasty pulled pork done right, so thank you for sharing this recipe. I love this so much, I'm featuring this post in today's Friday Food Fetish roundup (with a link-back and attribution), but please let me know if you have any objections. It's a pleasure to be following your creations…

  156. Hi Gina,
I love your site and have loved every recipe I have tried (chicken enchiladas, chicken parm, etc.) but this is the first recipe that has not worked for me. I followed the recipe exactly, was somewhat concerned with having only 4 tsp. of liquid, but that is what I did and it all burned off, no excess drippings at all and the pork was terribly dry when I got home. Any suggestions? Thanks so much for your help!

    1. I just made it tonight and the same thing happened to mine. There was no liquid at all (the bottom of the crockpot was actually all burnt) and the pork was somewhat dry. I'm hoping I can save it with the bbq sauce.

    2. Same issue here! Crappy end cap to a crappy day. 🙁 And now I have burnt-on food to clean out of a crock pot. This is the first/only recipe from Skinny Taste that has gone wrong.

  157. Absolutely delicious!! The only thing I did was add 3/4 cup of water to the crockpot. Thank you so much for your wonderful recipes. You are truly a life saver!

  158. I made this and Kansas City BBQ sauce and topped with the Asian Mango Slaw last night. It was amazing. Had my folks over for dinner and my Mom wants to make it for tail gates this fall. Great as always Gina.

  159. I made this the other night and it was AMAZING. We had it for lunch the next afternoon, lunch today, and there will be some left for tomorrow for the boyfriend. It's so good and feels like anything you'd get from a BBQ restaurant. I didn't use the Hickory Smoke and I used Kraft Org. BBQ sauce, and it was SOOO yummy

  160. Just made this today and my house smells amazing. I, too, only got a few drops of juices. Followed the directions exactly. Pork still tastes amazing and I just added a little chicken stock to keep it moist. BBQ sauce is equally amazing. No one in my house can wait until dinner!

  161. Gina… for some reason I didn't have anywhere near 3/4 cup of juices. I had a few drops. Did I do something wrong???

  162. Gina, did you use one cup of the BBQ sauce in the pork plus 2 tbs on your sandwich? I weighed my pork after cooking and by your measurements added one cup but it doesn't look nearly as saucy as yours. And by the way you were right about smelling it all day!!! Mmmmmmmm
    Joni

  163. Can pork sirloin roast work for this as well?

I do not cook pork so I am a newbie when it comes to that. Thanks!!!!

  164. I was looking at doing this recipe. My girls take piano after school on Fri. Do you think cook it on low about 3 hours instead of the last hour on High? I was thinking It would make a quick dinner if it was all done when I got home.

This was AMAZING! I've never had such amazing BBQ sauce in my life. So thankful for you're wonderful, and delicious recipes. 99% of what I make comes off of your website. The hubby loved iras well !

  166. I just made this for dinner tonight and it was delish with the BBQ sauce recipe. Even my toddler loved it. I may adjust the smoke and vinegar to suit my tastes next time. Since I was in a hurry this morning and didn't have all of the ingredients I just coated the pork loin with a generous shake of seasoning salt and let it cook. It was perfect. 🙂

  167. Hi Gina,

I make your recipes all the time. If I don't have time to make the sauce is there a bottled version you would recommend?

  168. I made the sauce and the pork on Saturday to have for lunch on Sunday, however we ended up getting home later than we wanted on Saturday and I forgot all about it!! 🙁 Needless to say I am making it again on Tuesday. I have made multiple meals from your site and we are never disappointed. Thank you

  169. Love the BBQ sauce and as I type the pork is in my crockpot waiting for me to go home!!! Can't wait to try it!

  170. This with the BBQ sauce was AMAZING! And both were extremely easy. We used pork shoulder roast (rather than loin roast) and it came out great! Thank you so much for another great recipe. We can't wait to serve this with company over this summer!

  171. Gina—-every recipe and your powers and talent amaze me. I have strictly only been eating skinnytaste meals for the past two weeks and not only do I feel skinny—but my husband isn't complaining about the food I am cooking. (Strange…)

Your recipes make it feel like we aren't trying to eat healthy. I make these pulled pork sandwiches for my parents and husband last night and they all finished it off.

I am only going to be cooking your recipes at home. LOL. I am obsessed with you!

On Saturday, I had some friends over. I made them your zuchinni sticks, we grilled some turkey burgers (your recipe) with the mango asian slaw, and we even had turkey meatballs. My friends actually wouldn't leave my house because all the food looked so good! Lol, and it was! All I kept telling them was "go to skinnytaste.com" and i even pulled up the website for everyone there. they were like, "woa, it actually is healthy" all confused.

In the end of my rant and accolades to you, I would like to say how COST-EFFECTIVE all of your meals are too. I shop at Walmart, and not only is everything that you put into the meals low-fat and low-sodium, but they are basic ingredients that can even be found at walmart. I even found liquid smoke at walmart. People have commented this week , "Wow, it must be expensive to eat healthy." And I've just responded that not really. I mean a pound of beef is now $5, while a pound of ground turkey is like $3.

Thank you Gina! When your book comes out, I am buying everyone I know your book (even my Dad, he wants to know how I made that BBQ sauce). Thanks!!!!!!!!!!! <3

    You kick hungry girls butt.

  172. Loved this. I made t over the weekend with a pork shoulder roast that I trimmed A LOT of the fat from. I did not use liquid smoke. Perfect meal to come home to after a day of lacrosse games with 3 busy, hungry kids.I make so many of your recipes,I have a notebook full of printed pages that I need to organize!!!:)
    Thanks for all your work!

  173. Question – this calls for Hickory Liquid Smoke, but I have the Mesquite Liquid Smoke. Do you think that would still be OK or should I go pick up the other kind?

Love pulled pork! And love a recipe that isn't going to kill any hard work I've done killing fat cells in a puddle of sweat in the gym 😉

This little Aussie needs to source some Liquid Smoke and I'm all good. Might have to wait while it gets shipped or I brave the insanity that is the only Sydney Costco – lol. But I shall Pulled Pork this winter! Hurrah!

  175. I made this for dinner tonight and was absolutely wonderful. I used your recipe as a beginning point and adapted it to fit the taste of my family. I did a rub of yellow mustard, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, red pepper flakes and sea salt, let the pork roast marinate for 24 hours. Since my BBQ sauce recipe uses onions and garlic, I placed a bed of sliced onions and garlic cloves in the bottom of the crockpot before adding my roast.

My family loved it and had no idea that it was a healthier version of the original. We had it with your black bean, avocado, tomato and cucumber salad. Love your site it is helping me reach my goal weight without giving up taste.

  176. I am currently on the last 1/2 hour of this prep and it has gone absolutely swimmingly! I used my own BBQ sauce, which is a vinegar based Carolina-style, and I have a good feeling that this is a major winner. 🙂 -Noelle

  177. Oh, my . . . I just made this for dinner along with some slaw. Delish! This is one of my new faves and will be perfect for some summer parties too. Thank you for all your hard work, Gina!

  178. Just made this for dinner tonight, and it got rave reviews. I'm so happy to have found a moist and flavorful pulled pork that I can enjoy without the guilt!

  179. Ok I love Pulled Pork and I've gotten it at just about every BBQ place I've ever been and let me just say, THIS IS THE BEST PULLED PORK I'VE EVER HAD! My boyfriend looked at me with wide eyes and said OMG that's SO good. I have proceeded to tell everyone I know about how good it is. I can't praise this enough. I'm absolutely hooked on this site. Everything I've tried has been fantastic. And I'm a picky eater! Only thing I'd change next time is the cook time. When I pulled out the pork I only had about 1/4 cup of liquid and had to sub in some water to make the full 3/4 cup. But that could be because I've only used this crock pot one other time (I have a bigger one that I use more often). So Thank You for this site and an even bigger Thank You for cutting down my Google search time for "Low Calorie Dinner Ideas" Cause this site has it all!

  180. This looks great! I've tried a few of your recipes and all have turned out wonderful! Keep up the grea work! 🙂

  181. Gina, when I found your website I think I struck gold! Everything I have made has been delicious and enjoyed by my family! I just shredded the pork and am anxiously waiting out the last hour before dinner is on the table. You are amazing and I just wanted you to know you have a grateful follower!

    1. Sometimes it is in the condiment aisle (ketchup, vinegar, etc) as well. That's where I found it at Walmart.

YUM this sounds delicious! I LOVE pulled pork! Normally I cook mine with a bit of celery salt and tomatoes just to season it a bit but I agree that it tastes best when not smothered by other flavours.

  183. Just put this in my slow cooker!! Looking forward to having it for dinner tonight!! I started my weight loss journey a year ago and have lost 112 pounds. I don't use WW but a lot of my friends do and they told me about your site. My husband and I have loved everything we have made from your site!! THANK YOU!!

Sorry if this was asked and answered already (I haven't read the comments), but do you have a recipe or recommendation for a WW-friendly coleslaw?

  185. Do you solely focus on making low-fat recipes?
Or do you also make sure the sodium is low along with carbs, sugars, etc?
I notice you advertise a lot about low-fat this and low-fat that but hey, we need good fats! I am very very particular about the sugars and salts that go into my body.

      Gina @ Skinnytaste

Yes, I agree. I love good fats, you will see many recipes use olive oil, avocado, salmon, etc. I just limit the bad fats. Sodium is always listed, I try to keep the sodium low, and of course a person on a low sodium diet can leave the salt out completely.

  186. Hey there Gina, I have been following your website for quite some time and oh my do I just love it! You are quiet impressive and I love coming on here and getting various ideas. I normally don't enjoy cooking but you have really changed that! And for that I would like to thank you! I'm also featuring you on my blog http://aliparkerblog.blogspot.com/ I hope you enjoy it!

    Keep up the great work!

  187. I am on a low carb, high protein diet currently and cannot have things such as BBQ sauce due to the sugar content, which in turn, creates carbs. But, I would really like to try the pulled pork in the crock pot…so, does your nutritional value for this include the BBQ sauce with it or is that just for the pork?

  188. Hi Gina,

I love making pulled pork in the slow cooker by cooking it in Diet Root Beer. I leave it all day and it never burns and it is so moist by the end. I then drain the root beer, pull the meat, and add the BBQ sauce. Would cooking it in diet root beer or regular root beer change the points you think?

    Thank you!

    Jeneanne

  189. Just made this for dinner…came out great! I adjusted the sauce ingredients just a smidge (for convenience sake…). I used an 8-oz. (1 cup) Hunts Sauce and small 6-oz. can Hunts Paste. Also, since I have such a big bottle of Agave Nectar, I used that instead of honey. I bought liquid smoke today but got the "Mesquite" flavor (Stubbs). At any rate, this came out delicious Gina! I love this website, I tell everyone about it. Last night I made the "Cilantro Lime Shrimp"…prob my most favorite dish. Your pictures are so beautiful, the instructions simple and pretty much everything I've made has come out great! (if it didn't, it was my fault). Thank you!!

    1. Yes, that Cilantro Lime Shrimp is awesome! I am in the process of making the pulled pork. I have two of them going right now! I just finished the KS city BBQ sauce and OMG, it tastes incredible!

  190. For those who asked about needing more liquid – it is not necessary with crockpot method. Leave the lid on and the crockpot will do the work. The meat will create it's own juices as it's cooking.

    1. Thank you so much for answering this- I'm using this as my first crockpot/slow cooker recipe, and was worried about the liquid!

Slow cooked pulled pork is perfect for any season, and yours looks so mouthwatering! What a delicious dish. Thanks for sharing!

  192. Hi Gina,

I've tried many of your recipes and they are all delish, I'm so glad your website was mentioned by one of the members of my WW meeting. I'd like to know if I can use another type of vinegar?
    Thanks!!!

  193. Can this be made on top of the stove and if so, for how long? Looks delicious. I love all your recipes and have made several. Thanks so much for sharing!

Looks amazing! I often use pork shoulder instead of loin since it's usually a cheaper cut and they sell it often at my grocery store. Also I use apple cider vinegar but will try next time with a red wine vinegar. Great barbecue sauce recipe too. This dish spells summer for me!

  195. My all time favorite food! You mentioned yesterday this recipe was coming and it was hte first thing I thought of this morning when I woke up. Heading to the store after work and will be making this on the weekend. I cant wait.

  196. Quick question, the recipe calls for 6 hours on high. Just wanted to know if this was okay or if low would work as well. Thank you!!

Gina, you have me drooling for this sandwich at 5:30am!! I need to get some pork and make this pronto!!!

    1. I was wondering the same thing, seems like there needs to be some other liquid in there to keep the pork from drying out.

    2. I was wondering the same thing. Where does this 3/4 of reserved liquid come from? Just wondering.

      LOVE all your recipes!!!!!!

    3. Avatar photo
      Gina @ Skinnytaste

No liquid needed, the crock pot stays covered and all the juices are created by the pork.

    4. It was AWESOME!!!! Even my dog tried to fight to get a piece (she doesn't get "human processed" food – it was so difficult to get rid of her… lol). Smell was unbelievable!:)

About liquid – you were so right, I've got back about 2cups, so to all doubters – just close the lid and don't touch it. After 8hours on low (my version), you should get some liquid.

      You are AMAZING, Gina!!!!:)

    5. Ok. I purchased a pork loin roast and trimmed the fat as indicated in the instructions. It was about 2.2 lbs. After 5 hrs of cooking the bottom of the pan was completely dry and starting to burn!! If the excess fat is trimmed off a lean cut of meat where is all of this reserve liquid coming from? Mine was extremely dry. Did not cook the full recommended time.

If you don't get the 3/4 cup of liquid back, what would you recommend adding in to make it up? I'm making this right now, I used more red wine vinegar but I didn't want to add another half cup.

I can imagine how good this smells. This is exactly how I like my pulled pork. With just a little BBQ sauce.

  199. So bizarre I decided last night, without even looking at Skinnytaste that I would make pulled pork this weekend, and sure enough you posted a recipe the same day! How convenient!

I'm in Aus though and I don't know if we really have liquid smoke, or if so it's not easy to come by, do you think smoked paprika could go in place of?

    Thanks
    Amelia.

    1. I also live in aus and you can get liquid smoke at either usa foods (there's a website) or bbq galore usually sells it. Sometimes I've been able to find it at the David Jones food stalls although it's less predictable! Good luck =)

  200. Love pork roast in the crock pot! I do some with sauce and some without for tacos. Put it in a hotdog bun and it's even easier for little ones to eat. Nothing falling out the back!

This sounds delish! Love that you used the pork loin instead of the shoulder which has a lot more fat. This would be great to make this weekend…

I don't measure, I season with salt and pepper, drizzle a little red vinegar and a little olive oil and mix it. Taste it until it tastes right. You can add a little light mayo as well.

  202. YUM. I love pulled pork and am so happy to see recipe from you! I am not Weight Watchers, but do make an effort to eat healthy, which you make so easy! The other night I made your fish tacos along with cilantro lime rice for my husband and brother, and they couldn't believe it was a skinny recipe. I then informed my husband that the enchiladas he loves so much is also a skinny recipe.

Thanks for all you do Gina!
    -Lauren

  203. I've been thinking about getting a slow cooker but haven't yet… Could I make this in my dutch oven either on the stovetop or in the oven? I assume so but would you have any idea of the temperature/cook time?

Also, I found this site on pinterest and enjoying your recipes inspired me to join WW officially two months ago. I've lost 21 lbs and I am incredibly grateful to you for making it so easy.

    1. I made shredded chicken following Gina's instructions in the Chicken and White Bean Enchilada recipe (another favorite) and then just combined it with the sauce. It was great! Next time I might try using chicken but following the method in this recipe just to see how it is, but the flavors are great!

  204. Gina, this looks amazing! I've been wanting to do a pulled pork recipe, but all recipes that i've found are just too much! Once again, you are awesome!

*side note, I want to thank you for sharing your recipes. My whole family began this past fall focusing on eating better and becoming active, which has resulting in lots of needed weight loss. Without your wonderful recipes, there is no way we would have continued past the first couple of months. Thank you for helping to make my family healthier.

    -Natalie

    1. It is funny, Natalie, how it snowballs…

I started this journey by myself and now my family is along for the ride, willingly. And for once, "diet" or "healthy" food isn't something they grumble about!

My daughter, (the 4 yr old), walked by this morning as I was downloading this to my recipe box and said "OH, Skinnytaste! I love Skinnytaste!" and "can we have this for dinner, mama?" She even expressed some interest in learning how to cook. She now pours over my recipe books and magazines when I am planning the meals for the week. I had to give her a pad of post it flags so she could mark what 'pictures' she wants to try. Now there are green flags all over my Cooking Light and Skinnytaste binders. lol

Thanks, again, Gina. I've lost 20 lb since March and my family is happy with 'good for you' food. This makes meal time a blast (and guilt-free!)

Christine, I love that!!! Our kids learn so much from what they see us do so I think it's wonderful.

My 2 year old is already a foodie, I love it!! 🙂

    3. Congrats Christine! I love Skinnytaste and my 4 year old also is a recipe picture shopper!! Children are so creative that way.

    4. Thanks for the kind words, Gina and Anonymous. She *is* turning into a foodie. She told her daddy yesterday she ONLY eats FRESH veggies now. Recently she begged for me to buy her eggplant and broccoli in the product aisle; the store employee behind us almost had a heart attack he was laughing so hard. Said he has never heard a kid asking for veggies without prompting before. lol
