This easy Hawaiian teriyaki burger is made with lean ground beef, carrots, scallions and topped with grilled pineapple and a homemade pineapple teriyaki sauce.
This burger was inspired by a trip to Disney World with my husband and youngest daughter Madison. We stayed at the Grand Floridian Resort which was a lovely place to stay. One of those nights we ate dinner at the Kona Cafe at Disney’s Polynesian Resort, where I had a delicious teriyaki steak topped with pineapple; which was the inspiration for this burger recipe.
The homemade pineapple teriyaki sauce is delicious, but if you wish you can use pre-made teriyaki marinade to speed this up. Canned pineapple can also be used instead of fresh, just be sure it’s packed in juice and not syrup.
To lower the carbs, swap the bun out for a bed of lettuce and drizzle the teriyaki sauce on top.
Pineapple-teriyaki Sauce Ingredients
- cornstarch, to thicken
- low-sodium soy sauce, for unami and salt
- pineapple juice, for sweetness and acidity
- brown sugar, for sweetness
- fresh ginger, for pungent flavor
- garlic, for pungent flavor
Grilled Hawaiian Teriyaki Burger
Ingredients
- 2 lbs 93% ground beef
- 1/2 cup grated carrots
- 1/2 cup chopped scallions
- 1 tsp fresh grated ginger
- 1 tbsp reduced sodium soy sauce
- 1 tsp sriracha sauce, or more if you like it spicy
- 8 slices fresh pineapple
- 8 whole wheat 100 calorie buns, I used Martin's
- 8 lettuce leaves
For the pineapple teriyaki sauce:
- 1/2 tbsp cornstarch
- 1/4 cup cold water
- 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
- 1/2 cup pineapple juice
- 3 tbsp brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon fresh grated ginger, very fine
- 1 small garlic clove, minced
Instructions
For the burgers:
- Gently combine the ground beef with grated carrots, scallions, ginger, soy sauce and sriracha sauce.
- Form into 8 equal sized patties, try not to overwork the meat so it doesn't get tough.
For the teriyaki sauce:
- Combine the cornstarch in cold water and dissolve. Set aside.
- Mix soy sauce, pineapple juice, brown sugar, grated ginger and garlic in small saucepan over medium-low heat; bring to a boil and simmer until sauce reduces, about 15 to 18 minutes.
- Add cornstarch water mixture and simmer until thick, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
- Heat the grill. When hot clean the grates and spray with oil.
- Place the patties on the grill and cook on high heat for about 5 to 7 minutes on each side, or until burgers are cooked to your liking.
- While the burgers are cooking, grill the pineapple slices for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side.
- To serve, place a piece of lettuce on the bottom of each burger bun. Top with the cooked burger and 1 tbsp of teriyaki sauce, then top with grilled pineapple.

This is a favorite in our house. We have made these with beef and Turkey. I added more sriracha for turkey and they are delicious with either protein. Love this recipe!

I made these tonight with a few subs based on what I had on hand. I subbed turkey for ground beef, and airfried them and the pineapple (it was dark by the time I started cooking so I didn’t go out to grill), also I didn’t have green onion so I used red in the burger. And I used Liquid Aminos instead of soy sauce, used dried ginger and garlic, and cut down on the sugar to only 2 TBSP for the sauce. Lastly, I used canned pineapple instead of fresh, and used the juice(its 100% juice) from the can for the teriyaki sauce.
Delish! I had mine over shredded romaine and carrots and a little more red onion. The kids had it on a bun. The sauce was the star of this dish! Highly recommended. I even made the burgers and sauce (minus the cornstarch slurry) ahead and had them in the fridge ready to go! Airfried each side about 10 mins, threw the pineapple in for the last 5. Perfecto!

My faimily really likes this recipe, I’ve made it a few times now. This weekend I made it, but instead of burgers, I made it into little meatballs, and broiled them in the oven.. Now I have a week’s worth of meal prep teriyaki meatballs with pinepple. Paired it with rice and roasted carrots. That sauce is just the best.

I made these burgers for dinner tonight and they are totally delicious, but I put the ingredients into my WW calculator afterwards and it comes out to 7 SP just for the burger and the teriyaki sauce alone and doesn’t allow for the bun. Could the math be off on this one? Has anyone else checked and found a difference? Still worth the extra, but if made with extra lean 96% ground beef, they’d only be 4SP!

We made this lean burger for supper today.. Hubs used to complain about not liking lean meats.
Now that he is past 70, he seems to recognize the need to follow a healthier lifestyle.
He said he liked the meat with veggies mixed in. I made 4 burgers and put 2 in the freezer. I’m looking forward to heating them up.
There are still a couple months of warm weather, so we will have this again.
On your menu for the week, you served this with slaw. However, I had left over corn on the Cobb, so I made the Roast Corn Salad instead.

When I first discovered this on Pinterest we would have them monthly. 6 years, a move interstate, a marriage and 3 children later, (and not having made them for probably 2 years) my husband piped up tonight with “what about rhose teriyaki burgers you used to make? Aaah, I think I figured it out! 7 points for burger on a (100 cal) bun (4 for burger, 3 for bun), 10 points if you add the teriyaki sauce. Does that sound right?
Hi Rachel. I use 2 point Village Hearth buns and made it using the above recipe and it came to 7 with the sauce. So maybe it would be 8 with the buns you use?

You don’t need my testimonial as you already have a ton, but these burgers were amazing! I am not a huge burger person anymore, especially homemade burgers, but these are soooo good! I used grass fed beef and next time I will skip a bun in favor of just using lettuce, so fresh and flavorful I found the bun to actually interfere with the burger. Second time making these. One of my skinny taste all star recipes! This time I added a little red bell pepper , onion (out of scallion) and spinach chiffonade to get more green in. Making sauce now. Next time I might experiment with more of a veggie patty ( was thinking mashed broccoli, cauliflower and peas with spinach and some beef) who knows. Thank you. My husband kept giving me dirty looks while making this…he's very picky and doesn't like trying new things. So I made an extra plain hamburger just in case. He devoured this burger…and made yummy noises the whole time he was eating it. Then kept naming all these things that the sauce would be good on. These are SO good! I'm not much of a "scratch " cook and i wondered while making the sauce if I should have just bought a bottle. After tasting, im very glad i made it myself. Very much worth the bit of extra work.
I made these last week and they were delicious! I used ground turkey since I had that on hand. I think beef will be better. I added cumin as other suggested. Next time I think I will add some more siracha or some red pepper flakes to spice it up a bit. The sauce was out of this world!! I used sandwich thins but next time I will be sure to buy the Martin's 100 calorie rolls. This recipe made a lot of burgers. For lunch I chopped up some of the leftover burgers , pineapple and used a little of the sauce on a bed of lettuce and chopped us some scallions. It was so good. I will definitely make these again!

These were delicious! I will note that as a recipe follower that goes to the 'T', the sauce never boiled after 45 minutes on medium-low heat. Turned it up to medium-high, then simmered and it was fine. But maybe I'm just dumb. 🙂 The burgers were perfect though!

Can I sub the cornstarch for arrowroot powder?
Cornstarch and arrowroot are both starch thickeners, but they have slightly different properties. They are generally interchangeable in the same amounts, but there are times when one works better than the other.
Use cornstarch for:
sauce recipeswith dairy
dishes cooked at a higher temperature, such as pies
Recipe: Lemon Meringue Pie
Use arrowroot for:
•Sauce recipes with acid such as vinegar and lemon juice
•Dishes you want to freeze
•Recipes cooked at a lower temperature or for a long time
Made these tonight for myself, husband and son. I used canned pineapple instead of fresh, and under the broiler instead of on the grill. I went a little light on the sriracha because my husband is not a spicy food guy.

I made these last night with ground turkey. I added some bread crumbs and oats to keep the pattys together. Oh my goodness, they were sooo good! And btw … the sauce was purely amazing. My husband was also very impressed!

I use ground Bison instead. It tastes so much cleaner than ground beef or ground sirloin. Very clean and slightly different. It's higher in protein, lower in sodium and cholesterol, lower in saturated fat. It's a bit on the expensive side (at $8.99/lb. here in Ontario, California) but I only use it 1-2 times a week. Give it a try! It's really good…
It's me again. Just now I used more of the leftover sauce to create some quick lettuce wraps for lunch. Romaine leaf, shredded carrots, rice leftover from Skinnytaste chicken yakitori, scallions, cilantro and this sauce. Terrific, light, fast lunch to recharge for more yard work. I was thinking about dicing up leftover chicken from the yakitori to add but am doing Meatless Monday so skipped it. This sauce is really fantastic! Wish I could post a photo of my creation!

These were great! Really delicious and very messy eating. I made a double batch of the sauce to keep some in the fridge for grilled chicken or shrimp later this week. Even though I toasted the rolls they got pretty soggy – which is fine because they were so tasty – so next time I may try bulkie rolls or a similar, more substantial "support" structure around the burger, pineapple and sauce. These would also be really great served as meatballs with pineapple/bell pepper/onion chunks swimming in the sauce at a cocktail party, or as sliders for a casual event. Excellent!

My boyfriend (who is the pickiest easter EVER ALIVE) found is very good. Especially the sauce. It was heavenly. I will make a big batch of it so I can use it with chicken on the grill.
Only the burgers came out a little to big for us (and our mouths) so I will make the patties smaller and the pineapple slices thinner. But this recipe is definitly a keeper and is going straight to the recipe binder. Thank you so much Gina.

Just made these burgers a couple hours ago. AMAZING! my husband went on and on about how great they were. I didn't have any pineapple juice on hand for the sauce so I used orange juice instead, was still incredibly delicious. Thank you for these wonderful recipes Gina. Made this for dinner last night and served it with corn (frozen kernels). The burgers were so tasty, especially with the teriyaki sauce. My family really enjoyed them. I will definitely be making them again.
For those who were asking about the calorie count on the sauce, I used a recipe converter to figure it out. Not sure how accurate, but here is what I came up with (assuming a serving is 1/4 of the amount made, since it serves 4 people).
66 calories, 13g sugar, 1g protein, 0g fat, 576 sodium

These were fantastic! I used ground turkey since I don't eat red meat and was planning to add panko crumbs to hold them together but forgot. Didn't matter, they held up just fine. I used 2 teaspoons of sriracha and may even use a 3rd next time for extra kick, we love spicy in this house. Thanks Gina!

I used some on hand veggies (snow peas, carrots, etc) and grilled with some of the "sauce" on a mesh grilling rack.

I enjoyed this burger recipe! Only change I made was after I grilled the Pineapple I diced it up "salsa style" rather than leave in a ring. Reason was, I only had 1/2 rings left from a fresh pineapple. Worked out just perfect and had grilled pineapple in every bite.

Is the ginger absolutely necessary? Some members in my family do not care for it at all.
Also, I have everything except the ginger of course, and garlic. Could I use garlic salt or garlic powder???
You can leave out the ginger and improvise with garlic powder. Should be fine.

If you use 93/7 lean ground turkey instead, its the same points for the recipe! I have put them both in the recipe builder on weight watchers, and 4 oz 93/7 lean ground turkey is 4 points, and 4 oz of Laura's lean ground beef is 4 pts 🙂
