I’m in love with Matcha, not just because of the antioxidants, or because it has two amino acids (theophylline and L-theanine) which have both an energizing and calming effect (which explains why Buddhist monks have been drinking Matcha for centuries!)

I really just love the taste of Matcha, more than I enjoy drinking a regular cup of green tea. Because it’s a fine powder form of the tea leaf, it quickly dissolves in anything you put it in, hot or cold, so if I want to drink it cold, I just mix it in – no heating required!

This is so easy, and takes just 1 minute to make. I combine sweetened vanilla Almond Breeze almond milk and Matcha powder – then shake, shake, shake! That’s it! You could even use unsweetened almond milk and a few drops of stevia.

For a quick afternoon pick me up, rather than reaching for a cup of coffee (which I prefer to drink in the mornings) I go for Matcha instead. It’s the perfect pick me up without the jitters.

  1. A PS to my comment just written – I see that that some others note that they do use the ceremonial grade. Is this higher in antioxidants or other benefits, I wonder?

  2. I have found organic matcha from Japan at a local Asian market. Also at a natural foods store, though the Asian market is cheaper. I buy the "for eating or drinking" rather than ceremonial grade. Sometimes I make a cup of green tea then stir in matcha for a double-green drink. But I'm looking forward to trying these matcha shots!

  3. Wow, I use matcha for everything, but never considered shots. Love this idea! My personal favourite matcha which is ceremonial grade AKA the most benefits is from Tease Tea. Called A matcha made in heaven <3 A little goes a looong way. http://teasetea.com/products/classic-tease-a-matcha-made-in-heaven.

    1. I also love tease tea’s matcha green tea as well! It’s super good quality and affordable from what I’ve seen. Cheaper than amazon.

  4. I found the best matcha at www.midorimatchacompany.com
Its organic and ceremonial grade and very delicious!

  5. I tried matcha a while back and hated the taste. I recently found Jade Monk flavored matcha and love it. You might want to check it out. You can find them online.

  6. I've tried this matcha shot a few times and LOVE it!!
This weekend I had it before a morning run and noticed the difference when I skipped it the following day…its a nice alternative if you're like me and can't eat before running
Thanks so much for this one 🙂 Love your stuff

  7. This is soooo goood!! I find myself craving it. I use my blender bottle to mix it up and it works like a charm. Thanks for introducing me to matcha!

  8. I ordered Matcha from amazon and it is so expensive :-/ I'm looking up ways to make it myself. I love this though, the vanilla almond milk really makes it taste great!

  9. I love Almond Breeze! What a good way to drink it, I never thought about mixing it with my Matcha!

I love the Starbucks drink, but this is so much easier and cheaper to do at home. It was delish! I bought my Matcha powder at our local organic grocery store.

My daughter works at Starbucks and they have drinks they put matcha in and I am pretty sure you can have it added also. Is there anything else you add it to besides milk?

    1. I add it to smoothies. When I go to Starbucks, I have it added to their Vivanno Smoothies. However, the Starbucks matcha blend is primarily sugar.

Starbucks matcha (teavana?) Is about 50% sugar… Be careful to check the ingredients before buying…

  12. Everyone's different. Coffee's never made me jittery but even a small amount of matcha will do it. It does have a wonderful flavor, though.

  13. Good work, Gina: matcha is the only form of tea in which you actually eat/drink the whole leaf, which adds other polyphenols and their benefits.

Adding vitamin C (often done in ready-to-drink products to increase shelf life) increases levels of the two most abundant catechins by sixfold and 13-fold: but we can do it with lemon or orange.

Thank you, I actually have the Teavana. Which I love:) But I noticed the one in the picture was different. Just curious what brand it is?

    1. Hmm. I wasn't a big fan of Teavana's matcha. Also I heard that to get all the health benefits it's worth getting the best. There are lots of good ones around. Favorite so far is from matchasource.com

I also buy it from Amazon, and my local health food store carries it. It's more expensive than tea bags, but it lasts me a while.

    2. My favorite is from www.MatchaSource.com. They have a very high grade one called Kama Matcha but when I mix it with milk (I prefer to use the unsweetened almond milk) like this I use their Gotcha Matcha. yum.

    3. Adagio has a very good matcha – adagio.com. Much more cost effective than Teavanna, and you can purchase a sample size to start out with, if you're not sure if you'll like it. Price points are all over the place on tea – but I have trusted Adagio for years. Very high quality and extremely reasonable prices.
