When summer hits, I can’t get enough of seafood in my diet. Some of my favorite shellfish and fish appetizers are Baked Shrimp Taquitos, Shrimp Summer Rolls with Peanut Hoisin Dipping Sauce, Smoked Salmon Pinwheels and my latest recipe, Steamed Mussels with Piri Piri.

These were actually a happy accident. I had leftover fresh lump crab meat that I didn’t want to waste after making crab cakes so I whipped up this easy appetizer. They turned out really good! For best results, don’t fill the phyllo shells until you’re ready to bake, and eat right away!

  1. Are the blue and green points mixed up on. this? Phyllo dough, crab, and avocado are all worth points on the green plan.

  2. this looks like something that would be great for an appetizer for christmas dinner. I have to transport them, about an hour car ride. Would it be best to cook the crab mixture before leaving, and then assemble in the phyllo cups and bake when we get there?

  3. I’ve noticed there aren’t a lot of reviews in the comments. Mostly people just commenting on how good it looks. I just made this, and had to add a lot of extra seasonings. It was too bland w/ just salt and pepper. I added some lemon and Old Bay Seasoning. I’m thinking some jalapeno would be good too.

  4. My daughter and I made these last night for a neighborhood happy hour and they were a hit! Quick and easy too.

  5. Gina,
These looks so delicious and I'm sure they are. My family and I thumb through your recipes EVERY week and to be honest most of the meals we eat come right here from skinny taste. Everything always tastes great and I have personally lost 30 lbs from following weight watchers and eating your recipes. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! Please never stop. You have helped me SO much!!

    XOXO,

    Jackie

Oh.. love fresh lump crab meat. Sometimes I think my best recipes happen when I am trying to think of a way to use something up and just throw stuff together. The crunch from the phyllo dough and the creamy from the avocado sound awesome with the crab meat. Pinning!

I love this idea! I buy crab meat at Costco and it's always just a little too much for whatever I'm making at the time…

  13. These look so good! I love crab but am always skeptical of canned lump crab. I will still have to give these a try, maybe for the Superbowl!

    love to cook!

The FILO cups you can find in most major supermarkets in the frozen section where you find the FILO sheets and pastry dough. The crabmeat you can get a great price at Costco if you have one or just a good fish store. The fish store may have it in the frozen refrigerator. Costco has it fresh in a can in the refrigerated section. I use it all the time. The best priced. The extra you can use on a sald or make something else or freeze it double the recipe. Good luck

    1. my store carriers them but not in the freezer aisle. they are usually in the back of the store where they have the refrigerated cases for cool whip and frozen pies, ice cream, etc.. they are shelf stable and are usually on a stand alone case. they come plain and also in flavors, tomato, spinach, etc.
