I love breakfast smoothies, a few of my favorites are Kale Banana Chia Hemp Superfood Smoothie, Strawberry Peanut Butter Swirl Smoothie Bowl and Skinny Green Tropical Smoothie.

Whenever I go to my local health food store, I like to challenge myself and purchase something I’ve never tried before. Last week I bought a small bag of raw cacao nibs which come from the bean of the cacao plant and is rich in antioxidants, fiber and magnesium. What I was expecting when I opened the package was the bitter taste when I put a spoonful in my mouth. But after asking around on Instagram I got tons of great feedback and ideas. I realized if you combine them with something sweet, the bitterness subsides and tastes like rich dark chocolate.

I’ve been playing around with them all week and decided to try them in my smoothie. Here, I combined almond milk, peanut butter, a really ripe banana with a few drops of stevia along with a handful of spinach. Aside from all the health benefits associated with raw cacao which you can read more about here, this tasted great and was very satisfying.

  1. My wife and I love this smoothie (she has it every day). We’ve added dates for the sweetener, a little bit of kale and chia seed. When we first made it and looked at – we though ewww, green slime. Then tasted it – amazing!!!! Healthy and it tastes great – winning combo! Thanks Gina!

    1. I suppose it’s healthy, so I will try to get used to it. My bad: I used frozen spinach, it was floating like threads in my smoothie, as the blender did not chop it at all.

  2. Hi Gina- long time fan! Just ordered your Air Fryer and cookbook! Tried this recipe for the first time this week- OMG. I am new to smoothies. Could you post a recipe where you prepare smoothie ingredients and put them in the freezer so you can quickly make your smoothie on the way out the door? Thanks so much for all you do! My husband and I have lost over 100lbs. since August doing WW- but using all YOUR recipes!! xo Colleen

  3. I haven’t used cocoa nibs in smoothies before. I was wondering if they are supposed to blend smoothly into the smoothie? I tried this recipe today and it had a nubby texture. I felt like I had to chew my drink. The smoothie was super tasty though.

  4. Yum!
Added fresh blueberries, and skipped the sweetener. Honestly, don’t think any sweetener is needed even without the blueberries. Definitely an easy, healthy smoothie to keep on rotation.

  5. I did not have cacao nibs so I had to adapt.  I used 3/4 cup Almond Breeze unsweetened original almond milk, 1 cup ice, 1/2 banana, a handful of baby spinach, 2 Tbsp of chocolate flavored PB2, 1 tsp. of Penzeys Dutch Process High Fat Cocoa, and 15 grams of protein powder. The smoothie was very good; however, I may add another teaspoon of cocoa powder next time. 139 calories and  4 Points+ points in recipe builder.

  6. Delicious! I use Fairlife skim milk for the same points value. I also used cacao powder since that’s what I had on hand; I suggest using less than a tablespoon of it since it’s more dense.

  7. Ladies I do want to let you know this site has everything you need cocoa nibs are 12.99 lb …has much more need to check out www.nuts.com hope this helps some of you

  8. Tried this for lunch today and it was like drinking a delicious chocolate milkshake. This will be my new go to snack/smoothie! Yumm! Thanks for another great recipe!

  9. This is a really delicious smoothie. Instead of cacao nibs, I use about 1 teaspoon of already ground cacao.

  10. OMG! This was delicious. I added some frozen mango and skipped the cacao nibs. I think I drank it in less than 30 seconds!

  11. This looks so tasty, great photography too. My smoothies have gotten kinda boring lately, and this is something I can throw into the rotation!

  12. This was delish!! Tasted like an ice cream based shake!! Which is so good for a preggo like myself!! Any thoughts on using the cacao nibs when baking?

  13. I clicked on the link above to price the cacao nibs…on the Nutiva site, 16 ounces is $18.99. Same brand, same size at Netrition.com is $15.49 🙂 I don't work for them, just love their site! Thanks for all the great recipes!

I love a good dessert smoothie! Banana, almond milk, nut butter and spinach are my go-to ingredients when I want something sweet. I'll have to try adding some cacao nibs next time, I've only ever used cocoa powder. Yum!
