Turkey Sweet Potato Chili Recipe

This Whole30 chili friendly recipe has just the right amount of spice to compliment the sweet potatoes without being too spicy for those of you who prefer a milder chili (you can of course bump up the heat if you wish). A quick chili ready in under 30 minutes. If you love chili as much as me, you may also enjoy this Quick Beef Chili Recipe or my most popular Slow Cooker Chicken Taco Chili.

How To Make This No Bean Turkey Sweet Potato Chili Recipe

This is one of my favorite chili recipes I make all year once the weather gets cold. You can swap the sweet potato for butternut squash if you wish.

I have provided both stove top and pressure cooker directions if you have an Instant Pot (this is the one I have) afilliate link. Either way you make it, it’s a quick chili recipe.

For topping you can serve it with chopped cilantro, scallions, sour cream and cheddar on the side. Since this has no beans, it’s perfect for picky eaters (my youngest daughter is not a fan) and it’s also gluten-free, Whole30 and Paleo-friendly. It freezes well and makes a great lunch if you have leftovers!

  1. This recipe is very good/tasty and healthy – we have been using in a weekly food prep rotation and everyone loves it so it is not getting rotated out 🙂

  2. Love this in the work lunch rotation!! It is so easy to make and freezes so well!!
I also like to add a can of green chilies, mushrooms and some red pepper flakes for a little extra kick!

  3. My husband asks me to make this meal over and over again. Definitely a favorite in our house! Thank you for sharing!

  4. Taste great nice warming meal for this time of the year. Easy to make. I made it in the Insta pot so good.

  5. This. Was. Delicious.
I was surfing for a good Turkey / sweet potato chilli and this hit the spot. I added a can of black beans. I’ll definitely make this again.

  6. I have been on a sweet potato kick lately and this was delicious! I made a few minor changes, I used garam masala and authentic Indian curry powder made by my former m-i-t. I also roasted the sweet potatoes first and added a can of black beans. We loved it so much that I made it again the next week. Definitely a keeper!!

Whenever I remember to make this chili, it is always a hit. Because I like the nutritional value of beans, I usually add a rinsed can of black or kidney and generally I am heavy handed with the spices. This is easy to assemble, smells marvelous, tastes terrific, and freezes well in single-serve amounts for quick lunches. Gina has been part of my healthy lifestyle for nearly a decade and is a 10/10 for inspiration and recipes.

  8. This is amazing. I used Chili-o for seasoning but other than that followed recipe. So impressed! It’s low cal too! Took it to a church chili fest and won the most popular chili. Beat that! It’s a 10!

    1. Hi Jeb, you could figure this out with a quick Google search. 🙂 Turkey is not vegan. You could make this recipe vegan by subbing the turkey for Beyond or Impossible Meat. In the future, instead of asking the recipe author to give up their time to answer questions like this for you, I recommend utilizing Google unless it’s genuinely something only the recipe author could answer. It’s faster for you and more considerate of the author.

The turkey sweet potato recipe was delicious. I made a small change. I used barrilla garlc sausce and less water and diced tomatoes half a can. I would rate this 4.5 I look forward to try more of your recipes!

  10. Delicious! I don’t love sweet potatoes but they just melt into the chili providing just a little sweetness.

  11. Made this with all the original ingredients and it was wonderful. I’ve also made it with ground beef (lean) and ground chicken in place of the turkey. I substituted fire roasted diced tomatoes in place of the Rotel because I didn’t have on hand and diced up a fresh jalapeño pepper for a little kick. Regardless of what meat you use this chili is delicious! I did make it in my Insta pot and it was quick and easy ! This recipe is a keeper.👍🏻

  12. I LOVE this recipe! I make it every week during the colder months and whenever I’m in the mood in the warmer months. I don’t put a lot of sweet potato because I like a hint of sweet and it is still Yummy!

  13. Great flavor! I used ground turkey and added a can of low sodium black beans. Will definitely be making this again.

  14. I’ve only made white chicken chili, but this will be my new go to. So good and flavorful. Glad I doubled recipe, eating for lunch as I type this review.

  15. I love this recipe! I switch out the sweet potato for butternut squash and add a can of black beans. I also use ground Turkey breast so if you’re doing WW, it’s 0 points! But it tastes amazing!

  16. This soup is weirdly AMAZING at clearing your nasal congestion lol. I discovered this by accident a few years ago while making this amazing recipe while battling a sinus infection. And now years later I make this soup every time my family has stuffy noses.

  17. My whole family loves this recipe – it’s a staple in our house. We make it maybe every other week, especially in cooler months. Although it’s a bean-less recipe, it’s also great with beans! Sometime we also throw in some frozen corn. It freezes great too! We like to top it with sour cream, shredded cheddar, and serve with tortilla chips!

  18. Double this every time!!! (: Prepare once a week. So delicious, nutritious, and filling in a “light” way. Gift it ~ on special occasions. A simply delightful meal with crusted cheese bread, so good. You will not be disappointed! (:

  19. I make this recipe probably twice a month, and finally had to comment and say thank you to Gina! It is such a nourishing, comforting meal. I always double it so it can feed my family of 5 and I can have leftovers throughout the week (I especially love having it the next day with a fried egg on top!). I love everything about it. Usually I’ll end up browning the turkey, onion and garlic the night before then dumping everything in a crock pot the next day. Turns out great with minimal effort.

    1. I was wondering about using a crock pot to make it easier. We love this recipe- on Whole 30 and off. Thanks, Vanessa for this info 🙂

  20. This was delicious! I only had 1 lb of turkey meat so I added a hot italian turkey sausage link and it really added a ton of flavor. I also increased ALL of the spice measurements pretty heavily and added some cayenne. I will definitely be making this recipe again!

  21. Just curious if others after browning the ground turkey with the teaspoon of salt do you all drain the excess grease before continuing on with the recipe? Thanks so much for your input.

    1. I use a 14.5 oz can of diced tomatoes and throw in a fresh chopped jalapeño…turns out perfect 🤩

  22. Really good! I couldn’t taste the flavor of the sweet potato at all, so it seems it’s more to bulk it up (which wasn’t a good or bad thing, just mentioning in case the addition of it is scaring people off). Really just tasted like a traditional chili, which is always good! I followed the recipe exactly and added black beans. I will say this recipe only fed my husband and I with enough for one leftovers lunch container, so double if you’re making for a family 🙂

  23. I have made this many times with ground turkey but tried it today with shredded chicken breast (using what I had on hand!)  Also very delicious! Love that this is an easy recipe that tastes so good!

  24. Great baseline recipe, and I’ve now perfected it with a few tweaks. This is absolutely perfect, my family and I are all in agreement that this is the perfect spice and depth formula. Also, it’s a double recipe.

40 oz 90% lean organic ground turkey (sprinkled with 1/8th tsp redumnd fine sea salt and 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground fennel seed during cooking)
1/8th teaspoon redumund ultra fine sea salt
    1 1/4 cup chopped onion
6 cloves garlic, crushed, then minced
20 oz (2 cans) Rotel mild tomatoes with green chilies OR Rotel fire roasted tom w/green chiles
20 oz of canned tomato sauce (I used Muir Glen Organic no salt added)
    2 tablespoons tomato paste
1.5 teaspoons organic better than bouillon chicken base, dissolved in 1 3/4 cup water
    1 tsp cumin
    1/2 tsp chili powder
    1/4 tsp regular paprika
    1/4 tsp smoked paprika
    1/2 tspn ancho chili pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried cilantro (this can be skipped)
    1/8th tsp garlic powder
    1/4 tspn onion powder
    1 bay leaf
2 1/2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and diced into 1/2-inch cubes
    fresh cilantro, for garnish
5% milkfat Fage greek yogurt for garnish
chopped fresh jalapeno, ribs and seeds removed, for garnish
polly-o part-skim mozzarella shredded, for garnish
cabot pepper jack cheese, shredded, for garnsish (children may prefer plain monterey jack, less spicy)

I used the instant pot method, and I also sauteed the onions and garlic separate from the turkey. I sauteed the turkey in its own pot on the stove, and then I drained the turkey (which was 90% lean). I also sauteed the onion in 1/2 teaspoon avacado oil, then added the garlic after a few minutes.

  25. I happened to find your recipe and decided to make it for dinner.  My husband and I really enjoyed it. I’m always looking for healthy low calorie meal options and this fit the bill. Thank you for great recipes.

  26. This was so good! I was worried that it would be too sweet with the potatoes but not the case at all. The flavors come together really well and make this a wonderful bean-less chili recipe. Thank you!

  27. I made this tonight only used a small butter nut squash chopped into small pieces, about 4 cups. It was perfect! I did use the whole 15oz can of tomato sauce just because of the added ingredients. Thank you!!

  28. I would love to can this…would you add raw sweet potatoes to the jar instead of cooking them in the chili?

  29. This was delicious, I made a couple small changes, but kept the recipe mostly in tact.  First I like a bit more spice, so I upped the heat a bit with some red pepper flakes and chipotle Chile pepper.  I also had some frozen hatch chili peppers in the freezer and added them as well.  I’m trying to eat healthier, less beef and pork, so ground turkey is a good substitute, however to give more of a pork taste, I ground up a bit of fennel seed and added it to the spice mixture while sautéing the turkey.  A welcome improvement to the ground turkey blandness!

  30. Hi, approximately how long does the turkey take to brown & cook through? Do the tomatoes need to be Rotel? I’m new to cooking so thank you for your help!

  31. I love this stuff!!! I have made it many times. I make a few modifications though.  I like the tomato flavor so double the diced tomatoes and add a small can of tomato paste. I am generous with the cumin and chili powder and also add a can of chipotle in adobo. This gives it a wonderful smoky spicy flavor! The 4 stars is due to the modifications.

  32. This recipe is in constant rotation for us. My kids love it and they can be fussy eaters. I sneak in some cooked quinoa sometimes too and they don’t even notice!

  33. This was really good. I found I did need to up the amounts of spices, i.e. cumin, chili powder and paprika. I did use smoked paprika also. I love Gina’s recipes particularly for her use of spices and herbs. She is a master at that. I turn to her recipes all the time for guidance.

  34. I made this but a crock pot version – browned the meat then the onion and garlic as stated in the recipe.  Then I through it into the crockpot with everything else listed for 6 hours on low.  I adjusted spices (doubled) as noted by others and it came out perfect!

  35. Very good and easy and filling. I added a tablespoon of tomato paste and cooked it down when sautéing onions. Also added a few tablespoons of chipotle in adobo and used smoked paprika instead of regular. Added a can of rinsed black beans. Rotel gives it the perfect medium spice level I prefer. The sweetness of the sweet potatoes play nicely with the smokiness and spiciness. Will definitely make this again.

  36. How does doubling this recipe change the cook time – if at all – for instant pot and stove top? Thanks!

This recipe is very good with a couple of small changes.  I enjoy onion so I use a whole medium onion, I add a small (8oz?) can of tomato paste and a 12 oz can of chipotle in adobo to give it a smoky spicy flavor.  I also use smoked paprika in place of the regular paprika.  It is wonderful!!!

So good! I added a can of drained and rinsed white beans as a personal preference. Bf tasted the chili and requested a pinch of nutmeg to highlight the sweet potato. Delicious the first night, great leftovers for lunch the next day.

  39. I made this for my weekly meal prep for work and it was amazing! I am definitely keeping it in rotation!

Made this last night for the first time. I used 2 lbs ground turkey, since I can only get it in lb increments. I more than doubled the onion and garlic and used 2 smallish sweet potatoes. I tripled all the spices. I can’t eat rotel because they contain cilantro, so I added a 20 oz can of diced tomatoes and a small can of diced jalapeños. I didn’t add any water.

Long and short— it was delicious!

  41. If I make this in a crockpot, can I just throw everything in? Do I still need to brown the turkey first?

  42. This is one of my all time fav recipes that I have been making for years! I have even one a chili contest or two with this one! I do double my spices up though!

This was delicious and easy to make. I used spicy paprika and it was amazing. Thanks Gina 🙂

  44. Oh my! Oh my! A slight change in the weather had me craving SOUP! Miraculously, I had all the (easy and simple) ingredients for this one and was able to whip it up easily- WOW! so so soooooooo good!! My husband and I were fighting for leftovers today for lunch. highly recommend!

  45. Sounds great but in my family that would be enough for three people maximum but probably two, plus some more sides. We’re active and usually don’t have breakfast but still feels like very small portions.

  46. I made this chili last night for my very picky husband who swears he will never eat a bean again and he loved this chili. This is going into our routine. We sprinkled a tablespoon of shredded asiago over it instead of using sour cream and that was good as well. I may play with the cumin and chili spice amounts in future meals but this recipe is definitely going into our meal list. And we used the yogurt biscuit recipe as well so it was a Skinnytaste meal. Thank you for a great dinner!

  47. Has anyone used chicken thighs in this?  If so did you precook and shred or cube them up and sauté like the ground turkey mentioned in the recipe?

  48. I love this chili so much that I made it twice in one week. The second time I added a 1/4 c peanut butter and 1/2 tsp curry powder (two flavors I love with sweet potato) and now it will be part of regular chili rotation. I’m only sad I found it at the end of chili season.

  49. After seeing a friend share on FB about this, I decided to try it for lunches at the office this week. It did not disappoint, it was so, so good! I will definitely be making it again. One thing to note, on the WW smart points, for the Green Plan, if you input the ingredients to the app, it comes out at 6 points, not 5. Just FYI in case you are counting points.

  50. Hi! In the sweet potato chili… I purchased the frozen sweet potatoes from Costco, could i throw those in the chili? Or do you think they’d get too mushy and watery?

    1. I’ve done it both ways. I think it is better with non frozen but is still good either way!  (and helps if you’re short on time). If using frozen I would leave them frozen when you put them in so they don’t get too mushy.

  51. Amazing! This chili is absolutely delicious! The sweet potatoes make it especially creamy. I didn’t miss the beans at all!

  52. I love this recipe and have made it many times. The sweet potatoes usually take 25 mins to soften stove top, so I decided to roast them at 425 degrees while I browned the turkey.  I added a diced Anaheim and poblano pepper (one of each) to the pan I was roasting and  the timing worked out perfectly. Delicious!

  53. I made this in crock pot today, & it turned out great! I did all the steps as listed, except I doubled the spices. Added can of green chiles. Put it in CP for “simmering” step.
On low for 7 hours. Perfect!
Added cheese, cilantro, sliced radish & 1/4 avocado to my bowl. Yum!
Turns out I like ground turkey better than ground beef for chili!

Did you have to soften the potatoes before hand since you were putting them in the crock pot?

The spice mix was excellent! I swapped out the water for beer (low carb-ish?) and added a couple tsp of white wine vinegar. Turned out great.

  55. SO GOOD. I used a larger sweet potato (about 330 grams) and so it definitely needed more liquid; I used turkey stock – about 1 cup (eyeballed to a desired consistency). I also used ground turkey breast (almost 99% lean), and the texture was actually quite nice – I used a little bit extra olive oil for satueeing and made sure to get a little browning on the meat/onions. This soup is really quite low in calories compared to the nutritional elements and the FLAVOR BOMB that it is so I didn’t feel guilty over the extra fat. The cilantro as garnish adds a lot to the soup, which is great with or without a tangy cream (I recommend Forager vegan sour cream to stay dairy-free); I also recommend about 1/2 tsp of ground coriander in the spice blend as you cook this. Fantastic, relatively simple and very easy recipe that delivers in flavor, nutrition, and so many other categories.

  56. Delicious!! Used the InstaPot which made it super easy. I uped the spices to 1 tsp. each and it was just right for us. My picky teenager even liked it. Very filling. This one is going into the Winter soup rotation. Thanks Gina!

  57. LOVED this recipe!! I did as others suggested- double the recipe but triple the spices (add I triple the garlic). It was fantastic! I added one can of chipotle peppers in adobo and WOW! Really wish I tripled the recipe because there wasn’t any leftover! Can’t wait to make this again!

  58. I made this tonight and it was very good. I doubled the recipe and tripled the seasonings based on other reviews and also added cinnamon and oregano.

  59. Has anybody made this with ground chicken? I’m making it today as I have all ingredients except that I have ground chicken. Gonna try it…I will let you know!

  60. I was looking for new turkey recipes and was going with something that I already had all the ingredients for. I found this recipe and loved it! I only had 1lb of turkey so I added a can of black beans (I think red, pinto, or black beans would work well). I made these into 4 servings to make this closer to around 350 calories per serving.

  61. This chili was so tasty and easy to make! I didn’t have a can of Rotel tomatoes so I just left it out and added diced red pepper instead. Followed everything else as directed but with 16oz of turkey. Put over top of a few tater tots with cheese and some everything but the bagel yogurt dip. So so good!

  62. one of the best recipes I’ve made. Family loves it.. I’ve made it for company also and it was a big hit.

  63. I have made this many times now and I follow the recipe generally but I used smoked sweet paprika and added a can of Chipotle en adobo. That gives it some spice and some depth of flavor.

  64. This is so good! My husband isn’t a big fan of sweet potatoes and he loved it. He also like that it wasn’t too spicy. I added chopped jalapeños to mine.  Made the IP version. Definitely will be making this again!

  65. This recipe is so good! Yum! Can’t wait to make it a again.  This is good right out of the pan but it is even more delicious the second day as the flavors from the sweet potatoes and spices really permeate the dish and sauce seems to thicken up after sitting.   I would probably double the batch so I have more leftovers next time.

  66. My family really likes this recipe! I always use a white sweat potato instead of the orange just because I don’t prefer the orange and its great!

  67. This is a favorite at our house. I double it making one version as written for the kids and another for my husband and I. In that one, I double the spices, add chipotle peppers as well as extra sweet potatoes and tomatoes. Love it!

I have toyed with idea of adding extra sweet potatoes so maybe I will try that next time. I think the smokiness of the chipotle’s would go great with the sweet potatoes so I may have to try that as well.

    1. Yes!  I always make this in a crock pot.  After browning the meat, onions and garlic I just throw it all into the crock pot before work and set it on low.  By the time I get home in the evening the house smells amazing and dinner is good to go!

  68. I LOVE this recipe and have made it several times, for us and for church members who need a meal delivered.  There is one confusing error–adding the cumin is mentioned in 2 different stages of the recipe–with the turkey and salt, and later with the tomatoes and chili powder.  Which is it?  I’ve added it both places and I don’t think it makes much difference.

    1. Hey Julie! While it doesn’t really matter, I have fixed it to add later with the tomatoes. Glad you enjoy it! 🙂

  69. It’s not terrible. Not great. Doubled the spices as other suggested-good call. Lacks depth or complexity or something.

Deeeee-lish!!! I made this for Superbowl Sunday. Loved by all! Great on our low carb/high lean protein diets. I at least doubled the spices, added another 1/4 c of water up front and cooked it for 1 hour and it was perfect. Friends have already asked for this recipe.

  71. Thank you so much for this recipe!  This is a favorite at our house. Even my picky daughter loves it. Just the right amount of spice, not too overwhelming for a 7 year old’s palate. And the flavors are wonderful. I chop my sweet potatoes just a tad smaller than 1 inch cubes and cook it on high pressure for 10 minutes, with NPR of around 10 minutes. The sweet potatoes are soft enough but still holding their shape at the end of the cooking time and the small uneven pieces break down and mix into the sauce and thicken the sauce just a bit.  This is a. keeper.

  72. Now that WeightWatchers has made sweet potatoes zero points for Purple Plan members, I am trying this!  I’ve seldom been steered wrong by Gina, but I have avoided sweet potatoes for years due to their point value.  I am sure it will be great!

This has become a staple at our house and it never lasts more than one night. If you haven’t tried it don’t let the sweet potatoes  in lieu of beans deter you. It’s delicious!!

  74. Soooo good & so easy to make! Even my suspicious 7-year-old loved it! This will be in our weekly rotation for sure.

  75. Wonderful, easy recipe. It’s fairly mild (which I liked) but I wanted a bit more spices to it so I added a little bit more cumin and garlic towards the end after I tasted it. I also read some of the comments saying that the chili was a bit watery so I used about 30% less water which turned out to be perfect. I cooked some quinoa on the side and put the chili on top and it was wonderful. Id love to try this recipe in a slow cooker. If anyone has suggestions on how to do it in a slow cooker let me know.

  76. Why is this 3 points for purple? I tried it in the recipe builder and it’s zero. I love this recipe please help!

  77. I used a can of garlic tomatoes (fire roasted would be really good, too) and a small can of diced green chilies. I also added kidney beans because I love beans. It ended up having more broth than pictured, but I considered that a good thing. My favorite and go-to chili of all time.

  78. This is such a delicious recipe and so easy to make!!!  Love it!!!!  I made mine in the crockpot. I commented to hubby that I could eat this forever it’s so good!!!  A favorite!

  79. I really like this recipe, but you need to double or triple the cumin and chili powder. Otherwise, it’s a little on the bland side.

  80. Delicious!! I added some pumpkin purée because I had some left from another recipe- it thickened the chili a bit as well. Will definitely make this again!!

  81. Soooo good!!! On of our favorite recipes to cook the moment we get a cool fall day! The sweet potatoes add a great texture and sweetness. I always share this recipe with people who are looking for something new to cook besides the standard bean chili.

Also try the white bean and pumpkin chili. It’s a runner up to this one.

  82. Crazy easy and crazy good. I used 2 sweet potatoes and a whole onion. I also added a little more of each spice than the recipe called for and added a pinch of cinnamon. It came out delicious and got better as it sat in my fridge each day.

  83. So glad I tried this recipe. It’s just absolutely delicious. I topped my soup with a little diced avocado. I am doing Whole30 and this recipe is a really nice change of pace. Thanks for all your great, healthy recipes. Oh, I kind of wondered about the cooking time since I live at high altitude. My soup was perfect at 25 minutes.

  84. Hi Gina!  This is a favorite in our house but I’ve never doubled the recipe.  If I double it, would cooking time be the same in the instant pot?  Thank you!

  85. I added a can of rinsed black beans and doubled up cumin and chili powder; added dash of cinnamon.  If you leave the lid off at the halfway point, the water will cook down.  Delish!

  86. Mine came out more like soup… I smashed the sweet potatoes to thicken it up and added some tomato paste Also there is not nearly enough chili powder in this recipe. Really surprised at the good reviews.

    1. Agreed! I gave it 5 stars after adjusting the spices: 1.5 tsp. chili powder, 1 tsp. cumin, 1 tsp. oregano, and 1 tsp. paprika, plus extra salt and pepper to taste 🙂

  87. Just made this recipe for dinner and it’s delicious! I used the same amount of turkey but used 3 sweet potatoes, a whole onion and i added a can of organic red kidney beans (just to make it more hearty). Toppings: cilantro, avocado and tomatoes. I wish I could post a pic!
    Thanks for this awesome recipe.

  88. This is so easy to make and really yummy. I like adding avocado and dipping coconut “tortilla” chips (Whole30 complaint) in it. As with all chili, it’s better the next day. I also freeze bathes for easy weeknight dinners.

  89. I have celiac and sensitivities to beans, but I love chili! This is sooo delicious and easy on my tummy. I used regualr (not chili) tomatoes, added a splash of white wine and oregano. So easy, too.

  90. This is by far my favorite instant pot recipe I have made to date. This chili is DELICIOUS!! So easy to make and whole 30 approved! Unbelievable! I have made this recipe several times already and I’m sure it will be a staple going forward.

  91. My favorite new soup recipe. I added 1/2 package of frozen corn and 1 can drained black beans. I use 16 oz. turkey sausage. I cook it in a pot on the stove. Delicious! I have shared the recipe with others and plan to bring it for a soup cook-off contest at work this week.

  92. Honestly, this is one of the best dishes I have ever made, according to both my husband and son. I wish I had doubled it, but will definitely do so this week! I love beans so I added a can of cannellini beans to the recipe. Absolutely a keeper of a recipe!

  93. Just made this and it’s delcious! I didn’t have chili powder so I used taco seasoning instead and it worked out. I can’t taste the taco seasoning at all.

  94. So great! I had the idea from other recipes to add in a bunch of riced cauliflower and I had some extra carrots to add in and it was amazing. I made this for Whole30 and I’m so happy!

  95. I can’t figure out how you got to 8grams of fat for 1 cup… when i put the whole recipe into my fitness pal, using 93% lean ground turkey, I get 4 grams of fat for 1 cup… and there’s no other source of fat in the recipe.

  96. This is a new favorite/staple for me! It is SO dang good and so easy to make in the instant pot. It’s so good on top of a bowl of steam broccoli too!

Add a bit of lower calorie sharp cheddar on top for a bit on contrast to the sweet potato.

  97. I made this recipe last night and it was devoured. It was so extremely easy and so delicious. I definitely plan to make this a staple since it’s so fast to make. I used lean ground beef instead of ground turkey; however otherwise followed the recipe as written. So yummy.

  98. This is an absolute winner!! I probably make this every week, it’s that good and so filling, but still light! I love that it’s made with things I usually already have on hand – super easy. Thanks Gina!

  99. I am a huge soup, stew, chili fan. My husband – not so much.  But he loved this!  Asked me to make it again tonight. I double the recipe and freeze a bunch and it freezes very well.

  100. SO SO good! The texture of the sweet potatoes had such a similar texture of beans that I may not ever use beans in chili again. Was great leftover too. So excited to find a ww chili friendly that was both easy AND delicious!

  101. I rarely leave reviews on recipes but this chili is fantastic, I absolutely had to. I was thankful for this delicious and rewarding soup on a bitterly cold night. Saved and sharing with friends!

    Don't Like Cooking

Excellent chili option for Whole30! I doubled (actually 2.5x) the recipe so it’s around for several days and used two large sweet potatoes. I added cumin/salt to the ground turkey as it was cooking (as opposed to after) and that made the ground turkey mixture super tasty by itself. Rather than stove-top this recipe, I threw everything in a crockpot after the cumin-salt seasoned ground turkey with garlic/onions were complete, and just let it simmer on low 8 hours overnight. This cooked the sweet potatoes to a very soft texture, and the smaller pieces actually crumbled when stirred and added to the gravy of the chili (which I liked). There were still larger (soft) SP chunks in the mix too – so if you decide to use the crockpot method and want your SP in cubes, may want to cut your SP in cubes larger than 1/2″. The chili-simmered SP cubes are super tasty. This recipe is very flavorful as is, but added some cinnamon to complement the sweet potatoes and ground turkey combo. After cooking other Whole30 recipes that use ground beef, and trying to eat that meal over and over, I appreciate that this recipe uses the easier-on-the-stomach ground turkey (and I don’t think the sweet potato combo would taste very good with ground beef). I don’t like cooking, but I’d definitely take the time to make this even off Whole30.

  103. I’ve been looking at this recipe the last few weeks. I’m new to having to cook for myself and I’m not much for change. I’m really glad I made this. It was easy and delicious. I’m glad I doubled the recipe

  104. Love this! Used regular Rotel ( so excited to be able to get this here in my neck of the woods now!) and diced tomatoes instead of tomato sauce. Used a tsp each of cumin and chili powder. Loved it!

  105. This is seriously delicious! I did add a can of red beans and a bit of frozen corn and wow we gobbled this right up. My husband loved it too. I think this is going to be a staple recipe!

  106. I substituted cubed butternut squash for the sweet potatoes for lower points and it turned out great.

  107. Just made this in my Instant Pot. Followed directions to a tee, and the sweet potatoes are mush and its watery 🙁 It tastes good, but just wanted less mush and more substance. So many positive reviews, Im stumped as to what I did. Maybe less time in IP next time, or even a quick release? NR took 18 minutes, – too long.

    1. Mine was the same. The flavour was really good, but it was watery and the sweet potato was mushy. I think next time I’ll omit the water.

  108. This recipe was absolutely delicious! My husband and I are on Whole30, and we both loved this. So good!

  109. Absolutely, hands down, my favorite chili recipe ever. Ever. …Not just turkey chili, but ANY chili! So good and soooo easy to make. Even my meat and potato loving boys in the house devour it, so it’s a staple at least a couple times a month. Thanks for another great recipe Gina!

I made this last night and we really enjoyed it.  I added diced jalapeños as well as some hot sauce for more heat.  A squeeze of lime at the end pulled it together

  111. This chili was absolutely delicious! Very quick and easy to make in the instant pot. I was fairly heavy handed on the spices and it turned out great! I will definitely be doubling the recipe next time.

  112. I made this for the second day of our January Whole30. It was delicious! My husband requested that I make a double batch again soon.

  113. Made this recipe for day 2 of our January Whole 30. It is delicious! My husband wants me to make a double batch next time.

  114. Soooooo good! I love this site, but I honestly think this was one of the best recipes I’ve tried. I decided to make this with leftover turkey (still have plenty in my freezer from Thanksgiving!), shredded into the chili for the last 10 minutes. It was out of this world! Perfect with sweet potatoes.

  115. Great chili recipe, will definitely make again!  I did increase the water to about 1 1/4 C during cooking, probably because the sweet potato I used was huge and it needed more liquid.  Simple and easy, yum!

How did you calculate so many weight watchers points? When I plugged all of the ingredients into the app the only ingredient that was any points was the sweet potato (6 sp). Then those 6 points divided by 5 servings made it 1 sp.

  117. I made two IP batches of this for a party/open house, and people were scraping the last bits out of the pot. I had hoped to have some leftover to freeze for lunches. Instead, I’m going to go out and buy the ingredients for two more batches! We served it over spaghetti squash with avocado, cheddar and sour cream as fixings. I pretty much never post comments on things, but this was great. It hit all the spots: super tasty, super healthy, super fast, super easy. This is going right into regular rotation.

  118. I’ve loved many of your recipes, but this one might be new favorite. It was delicious! My only complaint is that there were no leftovers. ha! I think I’ll double it next time. Thanks for the delicious recipes, Gina!

Delicious!!! Mine was a little watery too. I doubled the batch and used half sweet potatoe (1 medium) and half butternut squash.
    Will make again!

  120. I have yet to find a recipe that my family dislikes.  I’m so happy I started following you nearly 3 years ago.  This recipe is DELICIOUS!!

You added cumin twice, once while browning the meat then again with the other spices. When do you add it?

  122. Hi, Gina. I’m wondering about cooking this in a crockpot. Is there anything you would adjust for a slow cooker? Thanks!

    1. I made it in the slow cooker, on high for 3-4 hours. I’m sure if you did low for 6-8 it would be fine, but you may have to worry about it burning because there isn’t too much liquid in this.

  123. Has anyone made this and added beans?  I’d like to add black and/or kidney.  Do you think two 15 oz cans would fit?  Thank you!

  124. Fantastic!  Made this for friends of mine who are on the Keto diet. I loved how easy and quick it was to prepare and the taste is nothing short of delicious. I highly recommend.

  125. This is the first time I’ve commented on this site. I have made 3 of your recipes now and they’ve all been home-run successes! I had a women’s prayer group meeting at my house and made this recipe (first time using an instant pot) doubling the ingredients. Thank goodness I did, because we all went and got seconds! We also all raved about your website. Just wanted to share and let you know to keep up the good work! You have more fans than you know 😉

  126. Yummmm! Yet another winner! Do you think this would freeze well? I had sweet potatoes left from Thanksgiving so I did a double batch but I don’t want it to go to waste.

  127. Haven made this several times, I usually make a double recipe. Family loves it and it keeps well. I use more cumin and sometimes a bit of mesquite aeasinjng or taco seasoning

  128. Really good! Used petite diced tomatoes with onions and garlic, didn’t have the Rotel tomatoes. Used smoked paprika also. Tasty!

  129. Do you think this recipe will work with leftover roasted turkey? I have 5 cups and want to try something new

  130. I made this exactly as the recipe suggested and it’s fabulous! What a nice twist on traditional chili. I put a very thin layer of raw baby spinach in the bowl before ladling in the hot chili. Pretty too.

  131. Loved this recipe and so did the family. But my question is, does the calories for this dish  include the sour cream and cheddar topping?

  132. Question, it calls for a 1/2 tsp of cumin. Directions say to add cumin to turkey after it’s browned and then again when everything gets mixed together. Is this additional cumin the second time or a 1/4 tsp twice? Just wondering. I actually added a half can of kidney beans and it was wonderful, but I love beans in my chili. By far my favorite Skinnytaste recipe!! Amazing

  133. Can I add beans if I want to? Will it work out the same way in the instant pot or will it require more cooking time?

  134. Made this in the instant pot with a sweet potato out of my dad’s garden. . It was amazing ! Will definitely make again.

  135. Another winner of a family meal. Thank you, Gina. I have made this twice in two weeks but I added in butternut squash, corn and soaked beans. I wonder why people use canned beans when soaking beans for several hours or overnight and then cooked in the IP has much better flavor as well as being more nutritious without the gas and stomach distress that canned beans can give people.
Keep the Instant Pot recipes coming. The pot has revolutionized my cooking and kitchen!

  136. Any advice is appreciated, mine has been cooking for an hour and the potatoes are still hard. It smells good but the potatoes are crunchy!

    1. Possibly more liquid and higher temp on stove top. Sweet potatoes shouldn’t  take that long to cook when they’re cut up into 1in. Cubes

  137. I used 99% fat free ground chicken, and added a can of white beans (I like beans). Otherwise, I followed the recipe. Excellent!

  138. Just had to come back to tell you, and everyone here that this dish is just delicious! I followed the recipe, exactly. The first day it was good, but found that the 2nd day was absolutely the best  Thank you!.

  139. Made this last night and it was delicious, definitely should’ve doubled recipe, will probably make again this weekend as meal prep for the week.

  140. Loved this so much! Only issue is that it turned out a little watery. Do you think I should omit the water next time?

  141. Made this last night and it was a hit.  Instead of Rotel tomato, I used 24oz Organic Muir Glen fire roasted and 15oz Muir Glen tomato sauce and smoked paprika. It was heavenly!!

Made this tonight for dinner and it was excellent! I did add lots of extra heat (dried red chili peppers, etc.), extra cumin and chili powder – but we really like spice. It sounded good when I first read the recipe, but it exceeded even those high expectations. Best chili ever!

  143. This was so good. I’m not even much of a sweet potato fan but I wanted to try this and I’m glad I did! I did add 2 cans of kidney beans because I like beans in my chili. Everything else stayed the same. So good!

  144. I think I’m gonna cry! I totally spaced!! I didn’t have all the ingredients on hand. Had to do a lot of improvising. Bought cubed butternut squash instead of sweet potatoes. Tomato paste and a handful of grape tomatoes instead of canned tomatoes. Ugh. And salsa verde instead of Rotel mild tomatoes with the green chili’s. Gosh I really hope this turns out well. It’s in my instapot right now. My instapot gives me such anxiety. It’s not my friend yet

  145. Excellent! It disappeared so fast and I wanted more, so I had to make another batch within a few days. This is already a favorite.

  146. I made this today for lunch. It is absolutely delicious! Question: Did you use sweet potatoes or yams? The photo on your site looks like they are actually reddish in color. Just curious.

  147. Delicious! I used roasted butternut squash because I had leftovers and added baby spinach fbecaue I wanted to use them up 🙂 My son loved it so its definitely going to be part of our dinner rotation. Thanks for all your great recipes, Gina!!

Yummy! So many of your recipes are family favorites. Thank you for all the time and effort that you put into creating such delicious recipes.
I have what might be a silly question. Do you add the cumin and salt in step 1 or in step 3? Or does it even matter??
    Thanks.

If you add the cumin/salt while cooking the ground turkey, the meat itself is more flavorful. I’m not a fan of biting in to unseasoned ground meat in various dishes, so this matters to me. May not to others. I added it at both stages, but tasted before adding in second stage to see how much salt was needed.

      1. I’ve been cooking for 45 years. For soups, stews, chilis and casseroles, If you add the spices when either cooking onions or the protein, it releases the flavor of the spices much better. The fragrance and flavor is much deeper than throwing it in later, once you have added your liquid.

  149. Love this recipe.  I used ground chicken and added a can of black beans, a small hot red pepper from my garden and more cumin and smoked paprika.  We like heat!  Topped with old cheddar  and light sour cream.

  150. My family loved this! Quite possibly the best chili I have ever made. Even my five-year-old reported that it was his new favorite soup and he wanted to eat it again the next night! I doubled the recipe and used pre-cut butternut squash instead of sweet potato. I cooked the turkey in batches and increased the cooking time to 17 minutes on high pressure (in my Instant Pot) because I had doubled it. I’m not sure if that was necessary, but the squash was cooked perfectly. I am making it again tomorrow and will try it with sweet potato. Thanks for the great recipes!

    1. We made it with butternut squash, too – total accident, confused too recipes, but loved it this way. Haven’t tried it with the sweet potato yet – have you? which was better? may family loved the butternut squash so I am hesitant to switch it up.

      1. By chance, do you remember how much cubed butternut squash you used? I’m hoping to switch the potatoes with the squash.

  151. I’m usually a skeptic when it comes to turkey chili (I’m a beef purist for such matters), but this recipe is a solid A+ in terms of ease, taste, and macros. I threw in 2 chipotles in adobo sauce for extra heat and it turned out perfect. The sweet potato also makes a delicious texture substitute for beans. Thank you!

We tried this turkey chili with sweet potatoes with little modification and it was a bit!! Super excited and thanks!!

Loved it! I was skeptical about having chili without the beans so I put them in. I wish I left them out. Next time, no beans.

  155. Delicious!
I also added a can of rinsed black beans.
I used the pressure cooker, cooking for 9 minutes and letting sit for a minute or two before releasing pressure.

Thanks Gina for another delicious keeper!

  156. This is a good recipe base. I added more tomato because I felt the proportions were off as stated, and used broth instead of water for more flavor. Added a can of black beans too, but it was just as tasty before I added them.

Made this last night.  So good that I’m making another batch today to freeze.  This time I’m doubling the spices. It was easy to make.

  158. Hi Gina – just looking for a bit of clarification please … I want to make this in the IP tomorrow & some of the commenters say that they wish they hadn’t added the 1/4 c of water … but, the recipe actually says to add 3/4 c of water … should I add water (or not ?) & if so then how much ?
Thank you, I love your recipes & am hoping to get a cookbook soon 🙂

    1. Yes, add the 3/4 cup of water. The last step mentions to add an additional 1/4 cup of water but this is only if needed / too dry.

  159. This is a very tasty recipe, but, according to this Texas girls, needs more cumin, lots of corriander and a small can of beans to make it real chili!

  160. This is wonderful! I doubled the recipe, using 99% lean ground turkey. Comes out to 1 SP for those of you tracking WW points. If you exchanged the sweet potato for butternut squash, it would be 0 SP. Was a family and friends “hit” for chili and game night at our house!

  161. This was wonderful. I surely will be making again but doubling since I would want leftovers. I did not have the rotel tomatoes on hand but had everything else, so I subbed a can of petite diced tomatoes and a can of mild chilies. Otherwise, I made as directed. Husband loved too!

  162. This was the very first Skinnytaste recipes that I ever made. The family loves it. The great thing about a recipe like this is that it can be so easily adapted to suit your liking. My family doesn’t like anything too spicy, yet this delivers on flavor. I once had a handful of kale that needed to be used up, so I slivered it thin and stirred it in at the end. It gave a nice visual contrast, and bumped up the veggie nutrition without altering the flavor. If I have it now, I add it.

This is a great recipe- my husband who does not like chili turned his nose up when I said I was making this – 3 bowls later he was a very happy camper and said he was wrong- it is now on my go to list.

  166.  I have an expert veggie finder in anything I make, could I make the sweet potato into purée and mix it in with the chili? Does that affect the texture?

I made this again this week. It is one of my favorite chili recipes, perfect for cold weather. It’s not too spicy (unless you add extra heat.) My 2 year old loves it, kid friendly easy meal.

  169. I’ve been making your recipes the past few weeks and this chili is among the best along with the Kefta meatballs. Its creative and delicious and most importantly it doesn’t taste like you’re doing without.. We have a mix of dietary needs in my family and I love coming to see what you’ve got planned and then making it work for us. This time there were no edits and the whole family loved it.

This was beyond delicious! I made it with carrots instead to get a little veg into my little guy. I also made a very simple parsnip puree to go with. It was super satisfying.

  171. Next time I will double this recipe! My husband and myself both loved it and leftovers are just as delicious. Last minute, I did add black beans as the pot was lacking some color and I’m so happy with that addition.

  172. Love your site Gina, every time I sway from my WW plan I realize I’m not cooking, not enjoying food and love knowing I just have to open up Skinnytaste and get motivated and excited to cook, eat, and shrink 🙂

2 questions as my picky husband has been loving a number of your soup and chilli recipes which makes dinner so much better – the 2 kids another story – but anyhow, without Rotel tomatoes in Canada whats the best sub, equal amount of diced canned tomatoes and ? amount jarred jalepenos?  or diced canned tomatoes and ? amount fresh diced jalepenos? or another sub mixture?

Also, I have explained my use of spices for sure with your recipes but straight up cumin I just can’t get fond of.  Should I sub a 1 of or a mixture of oregano?, paprika?, garlic powder? for the equal amount of cumin or just up the amount of chilli powder?

    Thanks,
    Connie

This was really good. I did make a couple of changes. I added some diced red pepper, a little more chili powder, added small can of diced chilis & did not add the 3/4 cup of water. I felt the can of Rotel tomatoes & tomato sauce were enough liquid. Topped with cilantro & chopped green onion. Thanks for sharing a great whole 30 recipe!

  174. I absolutely love this and it fits the weight loss program I am doing. I just made it today for the firs time. Dollop of plain yogurt on top made it even that much better. Thx for turning out such great, healthy, tasty recipes!

what happens to points value if squash is used instead of sweet potato? and how about the consistency of the chili?

  175. This was great, but I did make some changes to suit my family. I added a can of black beans and doubled the tomato sauce and all of the spices plus add an  1/8 tsp of cayenne pepper.  It is definitely going into the rotation. THANKS!

  176. Made this for dinner tonight in my IP.. Fist time I screwed up an IP recipe, lol..I should not have added the water. Other than my mistake it was delicious!!! Served over brown rice, everyone loved it! Will be making again soon and most likely having it for lunch tomorrow, I made a double batch so I’ll freeze some too! The sweet potatoes really made this delish! Thanks Gina, you never disappoint

How may serving did you get out of this it just me so want to get a couple of days o of it

  179.  Wow this was good! I don’t normally like ground turkey but this has a good flavor a little sweet spicy. You can actually eat it in the summer and it’s not heavy.   I made it exactly as the recipe stated I did not tweak anything.  I will  have it over some cooked quinoa just for the added protein and to stretch it out a bit. Delicious.

  180. I am new to the Instant Pot world and have made this delicious recipe  several times on the stove top, but never in my IP. After I sauté the meat, the onions and add all other ingredients in, do I want to hit “Pressure Cook” for 15 minutes on high? Also should the vent be set to venting or sealing during that 15 minutes? Thank you for another amazing recipe!

  181. This was great! I did add 2 slices of bacon because this is very similar to a high fat recipe I used to make that had ground beef , ground pork, and bacon with sweet potatoes. This is a perfect healthy substitute and much easier to make! Thank you!!

  182. This truly was fantastic. My husband and I don’t care for sweet potatoes so I did not use them. Instead I made turkey chili. I added some cinnamon. It was great. I’ll be making this more!!

  183. This was excellent – after making it once, you can throw it together in no time! I’ve been eating Paleo for a few months now & I’m always on he look out for Paleo friendly and tastey recipes. Thank you!

  184. This was so yummy! It made a lot…enough for at least 4 days. I did use Chipotle chili powder since it’s what I have and it added a nice spice. Thank you!

  185. If I make this with 99% fat-free ground turkey, wouldn’t it be just 1 Freestyle point per serving on WW?

  190. Everyone that I make this for asks for the recipe and ends up putting it in their regular dinner rotation.  It is so delicious.  I usually add extra tomato sauce.

  191. I made this last night in the Instant Pot, and it was DELICIOUS. You definitely don’t need the additional water, it makes the recipe really watery. Instead of draining some of the liquid, I mashed up the sweet potato chunks and put the IP on saute for a bit to cook it down and thicken it a bit more. Otherwise, recipe was on point!

  192. This has been one of my go to recipes for years. Everyone loves it and it is super easy and quick to make! It also works great with ground chicken and lean ground beef. Highly recommend.

  193. This is one of my favorite dishes to take with me in a thermos when I go snowshoeing! Note for Instant Pot users: I browned the meat and sauteed the onions and garlic first. Then I put the remainder of the ingredients in (including the 1/4 cup water) and did a manual pressure cook for 9 minutes. Everything came out perfect and there is only one thing I would change with the IP recipe and that would be the water. I will not be putting 1/4 cup water in next time since I had to drain a large amount. Great recipe, thank you!!

  194. One of my favorites! My mom makes this recipe quite often because it’s so easy, and she had me try it when I came home from college a few years ago. I remember saying that there is no way I would like this, but I was definitely wrong! There is so much flavor, and it is really filling. It takes so good with a little sour cream on top, too!

  199. Made this last night…. Seriously DELICIOUS! Used 1lb chicken instead of turkey but kept the rest of the recipe exactly the same… Only made this for one so I have dinner for the next three nights! I’m not a huge sweet potato fan but with mixed with the spices and tomatoes this is a sure winner!

This is delicious, and my partner is wild over it. It has become a regular recipe in my rotation. I like to add about 1/2 – 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika as well. Thanks for making this great recipe available!

  203. Miss Gina!
I am currently on my first Whole 30 trek & this recipe is magic! I’m not a huge sweet potato fan (roasted or even baked as fries!) but I realize the health benefits they provide. I’m thrilled to announce I LOVE THEM in this chili. Side note, chili is one of the “old life” foods I have been missing so I’m over the moon after eating a bowl of this.
I made the recipe exactly to spec (using Whole30 approved product throughout), then I topped it with avocado, green onions, & cilantro. It also travels well!
Also! I own both of your cookbooks and they’re both stained from overuse so thank you again!

  204. Hi Gina! I made this the first time a few weeks ago for my girlfriend that had just had a baby, and I liked it so so much I’m making for dinner tonight 🙂 Do the leftovers freeze well? Thanks!

  208. YUM!!! Made this last night and it was fantastic!! I added a de-seeded jalapeno to it, may keep some of the seeds next time, but either way – very quick and tasty (and healthy!!!) thank you!!!

  209. Love all your recipes Gina! I was skeptical with the sweet potato but oh my goodness was this amazing! Love love love using your recipes to feed my family! Thank you for continuing to share them.

  210. Huge hit in our house and made mommy super happy to be getting good veggies into my kids  I put the sweet potato and a bunch of baby carrots in the food processor so my kids could not avoid big chunks of sweet potato. I was skeptical, but all four kids and hubby ate it up!

  211. This was so great! My husband and I loved it and my 3 year old had a second helping. Only my very picky 5 year old was on the fence; however, once I picked out the black beans that others suggested adding, she finished it and admitted it’s “pretty good”. That’s a win in my book.

Definitely adding this to the rotation as an easy, freezable family meal! Thank you!

  213. Fantastic one pot meal! I used two packages of lean ground turkey, so I doubled the canned ingredients and added black beans. This will surely be added to the fall/winter rotation.

  216. I cannot get over how delicious this recipe is! I also added black beans to mine but made the recipe exactly as written. It is even better the second day. I know what I’m asking for this Christmas – Skinny Taste cookbooks and the planner!

  217. This was delicious! We had it with cornbread and it was the perfect combination. Added it to my favorites on Pinterest and will be making it again! Thank you!

  218. So so good! Made with a white sweet potato and he flavor was great. Easy, quick and delicious (as usual!) Thanks!

  219. I made this for my family last night and they loved it!! Of course, I had to double everything and I added some chia seeds at the end to help thicken it a bit, but it was delicious! Thank you for sharing!

  220. Gina, I just made this tonight and it was delicious. I think your recipes have helped expand my 16 years old taste buds too!!  Everything is so full of flavor!!!  Thank you for all your hard work for us enjoy healthy recipes!!!

  221. This is my new favorite chili! Added extra sweet potatoes and I will double the recipe next time- we ate very last bit.

Made this tonight, it was so good. All three kids ate it (1 is a chili hater) and 2 of the 3 wanted a second helping. Easy to make, didn’t change the recipe at all.

      1. I made mine in the Instant Pot but with a pound of ground turkey. After using the sauté setting to cook onion, garlic and brown the meat, I set to “High” pressure for 9 minutes, then did Quick Release after that finished. Turned out great!

      1. Where does the 5 points come from? The sweet potato? Just want to make sure I am not under estimating my points.

        Thanks?

      1. I’m trying to figure out the calories I did this recipe and measured everything out and I’m getting a much lower calorie count for one cup.

  223. this looks amazing! I do have a question though…approximately how many ounces is a medium sweet potato? I seem to find wild size fluctuations depending on where I shop.

My husband and I loved this so much I made it for my grandchildren when I was caring for them …. they loved it!!! Since then I have passed it on to a few other friend, who have also raved about it.  I also like to add the can of black beans for color and just because we all love them so much.  This has become a family favorite!

  227. I made this for my sister last night, who is on the Paleo diet, and it was AMAZING. I couldn’t find everything I needed in the store so instead of the Rotel tomatoes I used can of fire roasted tomatoes and half a small can of green chilies. The fresh cilantro as a garnish is so yummy. I’ll definitely be keeping this recipe!

  228. This recipe is SO good!! I have made it so many times now and love it every time! The only changes I've made is to put in 2 cans of Rotel instead of one – 1 original & 1 hot. This gives the recipe a little spice but not too much. I also add a can of rinsed black beans because we like beans but it also adds more color. The fresh cilantro added just before eating just makes it!

  229. Oh wow, this was amazing but I gotta admit that I played with the spice. I made my own chili powder blend and replaced all the dry spices with 2 tsp of it. I also added about 1/4 tsp cinnamon, which is perfect with the sweet potatoes.

  230. I browned the turkey, onion and garlic and dumped the rest of the ingredients in a crock pot with a can of kidney beans- on low for 4-5 hrs- very good- spiced just right as per recipe thanks for this recipe

  231. This is so good!! I'm on day 15 of Whole30 and I love finding recipes of yours that work because I know they will be delicious! Can't wait for the leftovers 🙂

I am on day 4 of Whole30 and I am so happy I found this recipe. I made it tonight, following the recipe exactly, and it turned out great! I have never cooked or really eaten sweet potatoes so if like me, you are leery, don't be, they have great flavor and texture in this chili. Although I was surprised at how difficult they are to chop! I definitely recommend doubling it, the serving size it yields is ~3-4 and I could have definitely eaten 2 myself! Thanks Gina 🙂

I made this delightful chili tonight for my daughter and family, using leftover turkey from our Christmas meal, and used fire roasted tomatoes instead of rotelle. My two granddaughters, 6 and 2, can't handle anything too spicy, but it turned out very delicious!

  235. This was a BIG Winner at my dinner table tonight! Thanks for the great flavors! I used raw tomatoes + fresh green chiles for the Rotel, and doubled the spices. I also used turkey left overs for the ground turkey. What an amazing meal! Thanks so much!

This soup was DELICIOUS and soo easy to make!! Was hoping to have leftovers, but it was gobbled up all! (I even doubled the recipe!) Can't wait to make it again!

  240. I love this recipe so much, I cannot thank you enough! Many of my friends wrinkle their noses when they hear sweet potato, and then must admit how delicious it is. I make this about once a month.

  241. Thank you for this recipe! My husband and daughter love your 3 bean turkey chili but my son doesn't go for beans, so this one is amazing! Everyone likes it, it is wonderful for leftovers. I have made a 3 double batches of it this month and it disappears in days! I've made it in the crockpot and on the stove, both work. I was out of rotel tomatoes in the pantry so I subbed diced tomatoes and diced green chiles, that worked. The only thing I added was a dash of nutmeg because I love the way the flavor with sweet potatoes and turkey.

  242. Love all of your recipes! We have just discovered that my husband is allergic to tomatoes….yikes! Is there anything you can offer as a replacement in this recipe? Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can give me!

I made this last night and loved it! It was the perfect end to a blustery day, and such an easy weeknight meal. Though, I could not find Ro-tel anywhere at my usual Manhattan grocery spots, so I subbed for a 10 oz. can of Petite Cut Diced Tomatoes with Jalapeños and Cilantro and it turned out great. Thanks!

  244. This is one of my favorite recipes from your site! I make it all the time because even my picky husband loves it.

  245. Thanks – this looks great! Do you think it would work out well in the slow cooker? If so, any suggestions for cook time? I do crockpot meals every Tuesday so would be great to have another to add to my rotation. Thanks for all of your great recipes!

Sweet potato + chili = My Kind of Math. Thank you so much for this recipe, on a cold and rainy day here in Europe. It's perfect. Mari.

  247. I'll call this a perfect adult chili, as neither of my kids were fans of this (which made dinner less enjoyable with "why are there potatoes in my chili??"), but my husband and I LOVED it last year! Was the perfect fall lunch- or highly recommend for families with more adventurous children haha.

  248. Would it be possible to make without tomatoes? Maybe with diced green chilis instead? I have a kid who won't eat tomatoes at all (she can even tell when they are disguised in foods).

  249. I used 99% fat free lean ground turkey from Trader Joe's. Would you be able to provide the revised nutritional information for me? Thank you

  250. This soup is sooooooooooo good. Just as it is. No substitutions. The sour cream makes it absolutely perfect.

  251. This has entered the regular rotation at my house. I can't stand beans, so it's nice to find something with a "filler" other than beans. My husband normally doesn't care for sweet potatoes, but he'll eat them in this since the absorb the spices and don't taste "sweet".

  252. Thank you for this recipe! I made it tonight with a few substitutions and it was delicious on this cold winter night. I used 14oz can crushed tomatoes instead of rotel and tomato sauce, added small can of diced green chiles, and one deseeded jalapeno, topped with plain nonfat Greek yogurt, avocado, and hot sauce. Will definitely make again!

  253. I made this yesterday, substituted butternut squash for the sweet potato so that it is Low Carb, and it is DELICIOUS! Thank you for a wonderful recipe!!! A new staple in my home! 🙂

  254. I made this yesterday for lunch, it is awesome!! My kids even loved and asked me to make it for dinner sometime! We ate it with a little sour cream and sweet potato tortilla chips! yum!

  255. Thank you for sharing the recipe…it's delicious, and my husband LOVED it (I didn't tell him that there were sweet potatoes in it, since he thinks he "hates sweet potato"!) I kicked it up a bit with the addition of diced fresh jalapeno and I doubled the spices. mmmm goood…I'm making a second batch now since we loved it so much. thank you 🙂

  256. I made this last night and it was a slam dunk with my family!! I think it might be my new favorite recipe too!! Thank you so much and EVERYONE must try this!!!!!

  257. Oh my goodness! This was delish. Thanks so much for sharing. My husband is eating healthier without evening knowing it.

  258. This was dinner last night and will be lunch today. It's delicious. It goes together very quickly. At my daughter's suggestion–and because I had them to use up–I sauteed about 1 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms with the onions. Topped with sliced radishes for some zip and crunch–a skinny swap for chips I learned a while ago! This was just the thing for the single digit temperatures we are currently having!

  259. I made this for dinner last night; it was soooo delicious!! I added a can of corn- otherwise I followed it exactly. It was so so easy and so good! My room mates loved it and there were no left overs!

  260. I made this tonight and it's really good! I added some white beans just to stretch it further. I also made your Dad's cauliflower soup, so I'm going to eat well this week.

I've lost 12 lbs and 14.5 inches, and your website has been a big part of that. Eating healthy isn't bad with such delicious, skinny recipes!

  261. This chili is amazing, Gina! I've made so very many of your recipes and loved them. I actually entered this one in my school's chili contest last Monday (I'm an English teacher) and won runner up. Thanks!

  262. Hi! I am going to be cooking this later today and want to substitute beans for the turkey (I am a very beginner cook). How many oz beans should I add, and do I add it at the same time as the tomatoes?

    Thanks!!! Love your recipes!

  263. This has become such a staple in our house. My beef-eating, skeptical-over-each-new-recipe-I-try husband loves it and says it's the best thing I've ever made! I tripled the recipe this weekend so we could eat on it all week. Thanks, Gina!

  264. Made this tonight and it was great! Question though, did you use a yam vs. A sweet potato? I bought an actual sweet potato so my chunks are white, whereas yours are orange like a yam. They are often interchanged even though they are distinctly different, so I was wondering if it changed the flavor or consistency.

  265. I made this with my husband last night. He doesn't care for sweet potatoes but he took a second helping after having his first bowl! We added black beans too. Everything I've ever made from Skinnytaste is a hit! I can't wait for the release of your cookbook. I'm going to gift it to every woman I know!

  266. Made this for dinner last night and it was SO good! I used ground beef instead of turkey just because it's cheaper. Next time I will add an extra sweet potato! Can't wait to eat my leftovers today for lunch!

  267. I made this tonight, soooo good! I can't wait to have some tomorrow. I used a small sweet potato so I added some black beans, and I used ancho chili powder.

  268. Hi, I'm making this right now, it's simmering on the stove, smell great! One thing though, the directions say twice to add the salt and cumin, but the ingredient list doesn't divide them. Should they go in at the beginning with the ground turkey browning or at the end with all the other ingredients?

    1. I think you just season the meat with a little salt and cumin to taste in the beginning, then add the measured amounts when you are cooking everything. At least, it turned out good when we did it this way! 🙂

  269. Made this for dinner tonight & it was delicious. I used lean ground beef instead of ground turkey, added a can of black beans & used a little curry powder instead of ground cumin the chili was Fantastic!!!! I will definitely make this again and again.

  270. I'm making this tonight. I did add black beans. My family and I LOVE your recipes!! I am always recommending your site to everyone I know and then some 🙂

I wrote a comment but it disappeared!
I made this in the slow cooker. Substituted a 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes for the canned tomatoes and sauce (it's what I had in the cupboard!). I also added some diced yellow, orange, and red peppers and bumped up the amount of chili powder a little. Spooned it over a serving of Zoodles…I know that may sound odd but it was great! Thanks! Will make again!

ps. this recipe makes me think of the Big Bang Theory episode where Sheldon says that chili doesn't have beans! 🙂

  272. I just made this last night for my boyfriend and I. I did find myself adding more spices and salt that was called for (that may be because the tomato sauce and tomatoes I bought did not have salt), but it was sooo good! Hit the spot on a cold night! My boyfriend never had chili before and he thought it was good! We ate it with toasted bread but this would be great with tortilla chips or rice too!

  273. Made this tonight & it was (is!) SOOOO good!! I put in more diced tomatoes & tomato sauce than i meant to, so i ended up adding an extra sweet potato & some ground beef. DELISH! My husband keeps on saying how good this is! I never imagined sweet potatoes in chili, but – YUM!!! 🙂 Thank you!!!!

  276. I made this recipe tonight and it was amazing. Made exactly as the recipe. Wow – so easy and so so good. I topped mine with Trader Joes Kale and Yogurt dip, and my Mom used sour cream, and my husband topped with crackers. all amazing.

This is sooooooo much better the second day! Thank you for telling us about sweet potato chips. I didn't know they existed, I had some for a snack today.

I added kidney beans to mine becuase I like beans and just wanted more fiber. My 5 and 1 year olds loved it! My husband even liked it.

  278. I made this last night and both myself and my husband absolutely LOVED it!!! I used butternut squash instead of sweet potato which I roasted before adding it to the chili, I added some sauteed chopped red pepper and I replaced the tomato sauce and water with salsa. We made this last night for dinner, and it was really good. My husband said a couple of times how much he enjoyed it. We'll definitely be keeping this recipe handy for many more nights this fall and winter. I think we'll mix in black beans next time to mix it up! and then maybe try other variations after that.

  281. I made this last night and lunch time cannot come around fast enough! So simple and delicious. Really comforting (without being heavy) as the weather gets A LOT colder.

  282. I am making this today with turkey breast I cut up. I added a can of black beans. I hope it tastes as good as the picture looks. I hope the turkey breast works because I do not have ground turkey.

  283. made this last night and my whole family loved it! The sweet potato substitution was a hit. Everyone agreed they preferred it over the beans. I don't mind the beans in my chili but now it will be hard to go back to doing it any other way. I made this last night… and as I stated yesterday.. I added beans (red kidney) . Also sauteed green, red, yellow peppers and jalapeno and serano peppers for added color/flavor. AND I did a little something extra. I roasted the sweet potatoes in oven for 30 minutes (cubed). They were seasoned with oil, chipolte chili powder and salt. This is soo good! and will be good with black beans as well..

    1. For step 2 on the instant pot do you just leave it on saute or switch to another setting? (I’m new to the instant pot).

  291. I love beans as well and would like to add to this recipe. Do you know now many PP+ a can of beans would add to the recipe? Thank you for all you do for us Gina!

Sure, brown the turkey first then proceed with the rest, I might use a little less water since it doesn't evaporate like it does on the stove.

  292. I am so glad you posted this recipe Gina! I love chili but beans and I just don't do well and I've been trying to figure out how to fill out chili without beans as just meat seems like too much meat to me. I don't know how long it would have taken me to come up with sweet potatoes or squash on my own. Thanks so much!!

  293. Thank you so much for this recipe – I love chili, but my teenage son won't touch beans. he said he would eat this! Can't wait to try it! –Melissa

I would add white northern or black beans, honestly whatever beans I have on hand go in my chili.

    2. I added black beans and was delish! I also used 97% lean turkey and calculated just 3 PointsPlus per cup.

The only ground meat around here is beef, venison, or pork–is there really that much difference between ground turkey and drained ground beef? My parents butcher their own cattle, so we get whatever mix they grind it at–probably 80/20. I was just curious, since I've noticed that a lot of your recipes use ground turkey and I'd never heard of it before I started reading this site and still have yet to see any.

Anyway, I'm seriously considering this for supper in the very near future–how could I not?! You had me at "no bean" and "sweet potato". 😉

This looks like a good article on it:
      http://www.livestrong.com/article/527288-nutritional-value-of-ground-beef-vs-ground-turkey/

I use ground sirloin which is lower in fat than most ground beef.

    2. I personally prefer ground turkey because of the taste and the 93% lean variety is lighter. Not a big fan of any other ground meats.

      countrygirlcouture

Thanks! Since it sounds like ground beef is higher in iron (and I'm always low on that since I can't keep the supplements down), I'm just going to stick with beef. Plus, I know where my beef comes from!

    4. Mmmmm, I use ground venison for all my chili dishes. nobody knows the difference and it is so much healthier for you. when I run out of that the only thing I will use is ground turkey.

  298. I'm making my spiked chili this weekend and just might have to add in sweet potatoes after seeing your post! Thank you!

  299. Yummmmmm!!!! I love the combination of turkey and sweet potato and I really dislike beans so this is right up my alley. I'll be making this Monday night for dinner.

    1. I'm going to sub butternut squash for the sweet potatoes, I usually do. Or kabocha squash if I can find it anywhere.

    2. This looks fab! sorry I am in the UK what do you mean by Rotel tomatoes, and tomato sauce? our brands are quite different.

      Love all your recipes!!

      Elizabeth Phillips

Rotel tomatoes are a tin of diced tomatoes with diced green chillies. The result is spicy diced tomatoes. You can probably make your own by dicing the veg, adding water and salt, and letting them sit in the fridge for a day or two.

    4. I have used plain canned diced tomatoes and a small can of diced green chilies for the Rotel in other recipes. It's milder, but suits our taste.
