Low Fat Cream Cheese Frosting

A lightened up cream cheese frosting perfect on cupcakes or your favorite cake recipe. This recipe frosts 2 (9-inch) round cake layers, 2 dozen cupcakes, 1 bundt cake, or a 9×13 inch cake. You could also use Splenda to lower the sugar if you are on a restricted sugar diet.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz 1/3 fat Philadelphia Cream Cheese
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Beat together cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth.

  1. I made pumpkin cupcakes and iced them with this, delicious!  I made the frosting go further with 24 cupcakes and it brought it down to 2 points!

    • A few of you mentioned runny frosting. Did you use the 1/3 fat cream cheese? Those of you who had non runny frosting. Did you use full fat cream cheese? Thx!

  4. I baked a carrot cake BUT USED YOUR RECIPE for frosting.

    The frosting was delicious. It did not need the stick of butter or the extra cup of sugar.

    I choose to add drained, unsweetened, crushed pineapple and 1/2 cup crushed nuts.

  5. I used full fat and a cup of icing sugar with splash of vanilla and it’s runny? Are we supposed to beat it and then it will thicken? It’s too runny to use on a cake as it is.

  6. I made it tonight to put on a carrot cake that was divided into 12 servings (& recalculated the amount of points for icing on one slice). So terrific! it had all of the tangy cream cheese flavour with vanilla that I love in cream cheese icing. With the cake, my dessert came to 12 SmartPoints, which is a lot less than the 29 SmartPoints a slice of commercial Carrot cake with cream cheese icing would have cost. Thank you for the recipe!

  7. I made a cream cheese frosting the other week and it was too liquidy. How thick is this frosting? Will it keep shape if I pipe it onto some cupcakes? Thanks

  8. so….I'm trying something a little different and I'll let you know how it turns out. I am making the 2 point pumpkin muffins and I am using the icing as a filling….it's not so much an icing as I reduced the icing sugar to 1/4 cup and left the vanilla as it…I didn't want it toooo sweet. Hope it turns out.

  9. Ugh. I tried this with Splenda on a diet coke cake. Tastes…like chemicals. Not even the dog would eat it. I would recommend going half Splenda and half real sugar if at all possible – don't want to rain on anyone's parade, just wanted to share my experience. Maybe it could be better with strawberry cream cheese as well – I dunno, I won't give up 🙂

    • Please don’t give anything with artificial sweeteners to your dog! It’s highly toxic for them. I know this comment is old but just want to put it out there.  🙂

  11. Tried it with Splenda. If possible do a little more exercise to burn the few extra calories, and use powdered sugar instead.

  12. Trying this on Betty Crocker Pumpkin Angel Food Cake. Will be putting ginger in the frosting too. Can't wait to try it. LOVE this site!!! Only thing I would improve is a recipe search that only included SkinnyTaste.

  16. Wow! I just took the gingerbread men recipe and rolled it into a cake pan and backed it and then put on the cream cheese icing. It's AMAZING!

  17. You don't even need to add water to the spice cake mix…just pumpkin and cake mix! 12 cupcakes, 5 points+… but they are large!

  19. One would be enough depending on how much frosting you add to each one. If you like a lot of frosting, make 1 1/2 batch Of it.

  21. Yep,made the mistake of using fat free cream cheese too! Liquid. Boo…..but I used it more like a drizzled glaze and poked holes in the cupcakes so I was able to salvage the taste. YUM!!! Used it on lemon cupcakes made with wild berry seltzer. Delish!!!!

  26. I am making a new recipe for pumpkin bread I got from a friend. She made pumpkin butter and put it in the center of the muffins she made, and then frosted it with cream cheese frosting. I am going to use this frosting recipe for my pumpkin bread. I like it cause it doesn't have all the butter in it. I love butter but it doesn't love me!

  27. I went to try this recipe and thought I had vanilla but found out I only had almond, so I used that instead and still came out very good. I am going to put them on top of the diet coke cupcakes that I am also doing the first time. Can't wait yum.

  30. @Stash, I don't think they make a powdered sugar but I'm not sure. I don't use Splenda often. I meant instead for those of you who prefer Splenda to sugar.

  33. Since it's Autumn, I'm baking pumpkin spice cupcakes and using this frosting.

    One box spice cake mix
    1 Cup canned plain pumpkin
    1/2 cup water

    mix ingredients and bake as directed. So moist and rich. I liked it even better than the soda recipe. DIVINE! the cupcakes are 2 points ea when you make 24 and I'm going to top it off with this frosting, which may add that one additional point. 3 point spice cupcake with frosting? Yum =) Life is Good…

    • I even add the eggs cuz their 0 points so why not! It makes for lighter fluffier cupcakes! I’m making a pumpkin spice cake for a Thanksgiving dinner today. Gonna try this frosting! I may decide to make it a little more like a glaze by adding some unsweetened almond milk!

  36. I've used that recipe to make the weight watchers peanut butter butterfinger cake. It tastes so great!!

  37. If you are using Splenda instead of sugar, I would start with 1/2 cup and taste it. If it needs more, add more until you get your desired sweetness.

  38. I stopped eating a lot of frosting because of the sugar in it. I'll have to check this one out for sure.

  40. Thanks for the recipe! I make carrot cake for my husband's birthday every August and love cream cheese frosting with maple syrup… This will work great with a little maple flavoring!
