Spaghetti with Chicken and Grape Tomatoes, a pasta inspired by the abundance of tomatoes and basil in my garden this year.

Spaghetti with Chicken and Tomatoes

Each summer, I plant every variety of tomatoes, including grape tomatoes. Grape tomatoes are always the first to grow and ripen. Since I usually wind up with more than I can eat in salads, I like to create new recipes with them. Adding them to pasta is one of my favorite ways to cook them. This is also a great way to use chicken breasts in a flavorful way. Some other recipes with grape tomatoes you make like are Spiralized Zucchini and Grape Tomatoes, Angel Hair Pasta with Zucchini and Tomatoes, and Sheet Pan Shrimp with Broccolini and Tomatoes.

Spaghetti with Sauteed Chicken and Grape Tomatoes on a plate.

This tomato basil chicken pasta recipe is bursting with flavor and is pretty easy to make. When you use in-season produce, you don’t need many extra ingredients. The only ingredients in the sauce are the fresh tomatoes, sautéed with garlic and seasoned with salt and pepper. I top it with fresh basil at the end.

Are cherry tomatoes and grape tomatoes the same?

Cherry and grape tomatoes are similar bite-sized tomatoes, but they do have their differences. Grape tomatoes are oval like a grape with a thicker skin than cherry tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes are rounder like a cherry, juicier, and sweeter. You can easily switch out the grape tomatoes with cherry tomatoes if that’s what you have. Tomatoes are the best in the summer, so they’ll both be delicious in this chicken pasta.

Spaghetti Variations:

  • Use shrimp instead of chicken breast.
  • Add extra vegetables, like spinach, onions, or mushrooms.
  • Sub cherry tomatoes for grape tomatoes.
  • If you’d like some heat, season with red pepper flakes.
  • Swap the spaghetti for angel hair or use zucchini noodles or spaghetti squash for a low-carb alternative.

  1. I’ve only made one of your recipe and it was it was a keeper my family loved it so I’m going to be making more of your recipe

  2. This is such a simple and delicious dish! My only change was using chopped chicken thighs instead of chicken breast because that’s what I had on hand, and it tuned out great. The chopped fresh basil and tomatoes combined to make this dish as beautiful as it was tasty.

  3. Delicious! So easy, quick and tasty. I loved using our fresh garden grape tomatoes in this dish. I might try adding more veggies next time to make it a complete one-dish meal. Thanks for sharing it!

  4. This was easy to prepare and full of flavor from the garlic & basil. I needed to cook the chicken longer to get it fully cooked (about 8 minutes), but otherwise I followed the recipe exactly and it was delicious! Will definitely make again!

  5. So easy and versatile. I cooked the chicken in the air fryer instead of in the stove to save time (and I think it makes the chicken juicer). We added mushrooms and spinach and some shaved Parmesan. Don’t skip the red pepper flakes if you like some heat!

  6. This is one of my favorites! I use left over rotisserie chicken to make it even easier. I use your recipes 6 days a week because I know it will taste delicious, and the nutrition information makes it so easy to count my macros! Keep up the great work!

Thank you for showing sodium content. Too often people do not include this. Your recipes are my favorites. Loved this one. Thank you.

  8. This was such a great recipe! Add salt where you need and crushed red pepper. I marinated my chicken in an Italian marinade as well which was good. Pasta water is very important!

  9. Made this recipe as is with grape tomatoes and basil from my garden. Sooooo good! Husband was lured with “something smelling wonderful from the kitchen.” Added some buttered crunchy bread. Thanks Gina for another easy and delish recipe….looking forward to the leftover meal.

  10. Just found this recipe and so I glad I did! So easy, delicious and not too many calories since we’re watching our weights. Will definitely be making quite often!

  11. Made this last night. I used cooked rotisserie chicken and added the dry basil and oregano when I added the tomatoes. Quick, easy, and yummy!

I’m a bit confused about the serving size. What is 11/2? Sorry not a math person. I’m super excited to make this though. Can you advise?

  13. Thoughts on freezing this? Mine was yummy. I did add more seasoning and I tripled the recipe for a crowd, but I have too many left overs.

  14. Loved this! Even my (slightly picky) husband couldn’t get enough of it! So easy and delicious. This will definitely become a staple in our house.

  15. This was delicious. I added Celery to mine to use up what I had. My husband and I loved it. It was added to our rotation.

  16. We found this recipe fresh and easy to make, but the result was a bit bland. Definitely needed salt. Overall, we’d make it again.

  17. This was incredibly good. My 100% italian husband even liked it ~ alot! Very easy to put together which made great to cook after getting home from work.

  18. We changed the pasta to spiralized zucchini and increased the garlic to 8 cloves and tomatoes to 3 cups. This was an absolutely amazing meal in under 30 minutes.

  19. I generally love your recipes. I followed this one exactly and it was extremely bland. My boyfriend was not a fan either.

    1. We spiralized zucchini from the garden. Cherry tomatoes fro. The garden. Increased the amount of garlic and tomatoes. It was spot on.

  20. This was absolutely incredible!!! I followed the recipe exactly and it was perfect. SO flavorful and fresh! Thank you, Gina, for another amazing recipe!

I made this today for my wife, my son-in-law and myself. Three people with different food tastes. All of us loved it! I used less oregano because my wife’s not a fan, less garlic because my son-in-law is not a fan and no fresh basil because I won’t spend the money for it at the supermarket. And I used Kraft parmesan cheese.

It was delicious nevertheless. (A year ago I would have purchased the fresh basil and imported parmesan cheese, btw. I’m self-employed and business has been a little slow these past months. 🙂 )

  22. I made it exactly like the recipe called for and it was so yummy!! I can’t wait to eat the leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

  23. This recipe was really good!  Loved the taste of the grape tomatoes and garlic all mixed with the spaghetti.  Will be making this again in no time.

This is an amazing recipe utilizing fresh items from the garden with many options to customize depending on preferences. Soooo good.

  25. Excellent!  Quick, delicious and easy.  Perfect for a Monday.  Both of my daughters loved it and no extra calories in sauces.    Simplicity is the key for this dish.

  26. Looks good!! I’m new to the website. I’m beginning a new diet plan after a heart attack in May. Looking forward to trying these recipes!!

  27. This recipe is beyond amazing!!  This will be in our regular rotation now.  With the abundance of FRESH tomatoes and basil right now, it’s a winner.  I did use angel hair pasta and I think that made a difference.  I also used fresh basil when I sautéed the chicken, but did use dried oregano.  Fresh oregano might kick this whole thing up a notch.  I used all of the reserved 1/2 cup of pasta water, it was definitely needed.  The fresh basil and freshly grated parmesan at the end put this one over the top.  Yes, this is one of those all-time favorite recipes.  Thank you, SkinnyTaste!

This recipe was so good. It was a hit with the whole family. My 18, 15 and 12 year old kids all wanted seconds. So light and yummy.

  29. Yum! I combined this recipe and the “Angel hair with zucchini and tomatoes” recipe(basically just added spiralized zucchini) to use as many summer veggies from my garden.  Delish!

I have been following you for years. This is the first recipe my fiance and I made from you. It was absolutely wonderful!

  31. I made this recipe tonight. I didn’t have fresh basil I used 3 Tbsp. of jarred pesto instead. Absolutely deliscious. I will definitely make it again. Thanks Gina for another amazing recipe!!

  32. My grandkids are here and we bought them pizza for supper tonight, As I am bring a cup or two of cherry tomatoes from my plants everyday, I decided to make this for my husband and I. So simple and light. It was wonderful. It was hard to not go back for seconds. Thanks so much for this recipe!

  33. I added about a half a cup of white wine (sauvignon blanc) right after the garlic to deglaze the pan to get all that brown good stuff up. It added a few calories but it’s SO GOOD.

  34. Thank you for the enhancement to the printing function that enables setting the serving size. That is so helpful! Great recipe too. I’ve made this many, many times with shrimp and have also added spinach.

I doubled this recipe for my family of 6 and it was a huge hit. We have a ton of grape tomatoes, so I will definitely be making this again. I’m a little bummed because there’s not a lot of leftovers.

  38. Looking for the chicken with zucchini noodles tomatoes recipe. I saw it on my feed and then lost it before I could copy it. Wanted to make it for dinner

This looks great!  I was thinking of using shrimp instead of chicken. Has anyone tried it with shrimp?  Do you think it would work?

  40. This was good. I used yellow grape tomatoes and added mushrooms and Swiss chard. The only change I would make is to cut the chicken into thinner strips. We had leftover so I’ll have to see how it reheats.

  41. Made last night – FINALLY a chicken recipe my husband said “chicken is awesome” instead of “meh…. tastes like chicken” when asked if he enjoyed it. So easy to make.

  44. This was delicious and simple! My husband told me to double the batch next time so that we would have more leftovers! It reheated very well. I think I’ll add some sauteed mushrooms to it next time.

I think it needs more sauce. I will use a can of diced tomatoes instead of the cherry tomatoes or in addition to.

  48. I have some opened organic chicken broth that I don’t eat any to go bad. Can I use half organic chicken broth and pasta water? Or just the organic chicken broth? How will that change the nutritional facts?

  49. This dish is amazing. Trying to get back on track with meal prep, and this is perfect! I kept the chicken and pasta separate so i could make sure i was getting the appropriate portions, but OMG the flavor is soooo good!!!! thank you Gina, i’ve lost 30 lbs with your recipes and recommend this site to all my friends

I made this last night and it was great! I added chopped kalamata olives to it, for that bit of salty flavor .
It will definitely be one of my go to meals!

    1. I’m a newie from down under Australia I’ve seen all your recipes and they look good but I’ll cook this one first. I’m sure my family would love it and me too. Thank you very much Gina. Joaniex

  51. Made this tonight and it absolutely delicious.  I made it as directed but added some red pepper flakes in with the garlic and also threw in some fresh spinach with the pasta  as recommended by other commenters. Thanks again Gina!

  52. What should the weight of the Chicken Breasts be? i’m assuming 1 lb. what did some of you use, thanks for your help

  53. This is so delicious. My family and I really enjoy it. When I add the tomatoes I also add baby spinach. Comes out great! Thank you

  54. this was delicious. made a few variations due to what I had:
    >used leftover chicken
    >added broccoli (wish I had spinach!)
    >added a few shakes of onion/garlic powder
    >used a tad more pasta water (gluten-free pasta) and a teaspoon of olive oil after adding everything together for a final sauté 🙂

quick, easy and delicious – thanks for sharing ~

Made this with zucchini noodles instead of pasta noodles and it was almost better than having the real pasta!!! This recipe will definitely be in the rotation!

  56. I made this last night and was really pleasantly surprised with the amount of flavor it had. I added some additional veggies I needed to use up (kale and red pepper), and it was a really hearty and filling dish.

  57. How many lbs or ounces of chicken did you use in the calculation? I buy the large chicken breasts which are sometimes 10oz each!!

Delicious! Unfortunately, my husband and 2yo son won't eat tomatoes so I added broccoli instead-it was great. Next time I will make it with tomatoes for myself- I'm sure it will be even better!

My family loved this last night!! Definitely making again. However, no idea how it only took you 20 min to make. Took me over an hour with all the chopping of chicken, tomatoes, basil, and garlic. But I'm no expert chopper either. I'm making this for another family later this week, so I'm glad I tested the time first.

    1. Me too!  I hope it is good .  All the prep is done but this has taken me a lot longer than 20minutes.  Wish me luck!

Prep people help tremendously! Ina does the same thing. I wish these chefs would be more realistic as far as the time required.

      1. Recipe works. But not in 20 minutes. Though I did add onion, ‘shrooms and zukes. Prep was most certainly, definitely, positively more than 5 minutes!

  60. We made this today after a busy afternoon in the ski slopes. We were exhausted and hungry and I considered ordering pizza. I am so glad I didn't! This dish was so easy and quick to make. Both my husband and my six-year old give two thumbs up!

  61. I've made this twice now (Once for lunch and once for the whole family for dinner) and it's really good! Maybe it could use some zucchini, but still flavorful over Ronzoni Smart Taste spaghetti. we will keep it in our rotation.

  62. I've made this recipe a few times and it is now my favorite pasta recipe. Even my fiance loves it. I use rice vermicelli because I don't eat pasta, but it's just as good of not better. Thank you for all your wonderful recipe's! Merry Christmas to you and your family 🙂

  63. Have made this recipe several times now exactly as posted and my husband says it is just like going out to eat at a nice italian restaurant. He and I love it. The kids, not so much, but they are very young, so we just give them sauce from a jar on their plain noodles and we can still eat together. Definitely a keeper recipe for this family and currently my husbands favorite. Thank you, Gina!

  64. I made a similar dish to this but did shrimp instead of chicken..and also added a lil red pepper flakes for a bit of spice. Then when I added it all to the pot I added 4 handfuls of fresh spinach!!

  65. I've made this twice now, and am making it again tonight. We absolutely love it! My vegatarian mom even makes it minus the chicken. So fresh and delicious with my garden tomotoes.

  66. I found this on Pintrest and decided to try it. I didn't have cloves of garlic so I used minced and I added the oregano and basil to the water I cooked bow-tie pasta in. It was a total hit on so many levels, Delicious, inexpensive, fast, easy and hardly no mess. My husband says this needs to be added to the menu often! He also said he thinks broccoli would be great in it as well!

  67. This Spaghetti with Sauteed Chicken & Grape Tomatoes looks delicious. Like always you present us a healthy & delicious meal. Really perfect for a busy weeknight. Thanks for sharing.

  68. I make this all the time, except I use Roma tomatoes (chopped) and I add cooked broccoli. My kids (7 and 10) LOVE it!! It is one of their favorite dinners (and they don't like anything) LOL

  69. This was really tasty and light and felt like summer. We ate it out on the balcony. Can definitely see making this again with some summer tomatoes. http://epifurious.tumblr.com/post/26319591085/linguine-with-sauteed-chicken-and-grape-tomatoes

  70. Found on Pinterest and tried it for dinner tonight…i LOVED it! My husband didnt really enjoy it though, he is very picky and likes big hearty meaty meals. I think i will just make this for my lunches 🙂

  71. My whole family loved this. It's very easy to make and delicious. I didn't change anything except I added some thyme to the chicken.

  72. Loved this! We made it with Rice Fettucini Noodles and it was delicious! Very light and flavorful

  74. This was so yummy. I added onions and loved it (I used half a sweet onion), it really brought all the flavors together. Thanks for sharing!

  75. Made this last night and swapped out the whole wheat pasta for spaghetti squash… Just as good and even lighter!

  76. I found this on pintrest and made it all in under 30 minutes. Rachel Ray's got nothin' on this recipe… it's delicious and figure friendly! My husband raved about it

  77. Love it! The first recipe i've been able to make and serve as is to my whole family. Definitely going in to the weeknight rotation.

  82. Tonight I plan to make this one for the first time. I am assuming your points calculations include the pasta since it is in the ingredients list. Just checking because it seems like a really low points dish (which is fabulous)!

Thanks, Gina! I'm positive I would not have lasted on WW this time without your site. It's a different world to lose weight with a family to cook for!

  83. Loved it! I agree with other suggestions about trying to add more veggies. I might try asparagus on the next go around. It's a keeper!

  84. Made this last night! Awesome! I love your site!!! I tell people about it probably everyday! Me and my husband added a bit of our favorite hot sauce and it was amazing. The kids all loved it too (without the hot sauce). Tiffany

  85. I made this dish today and it came out awesome. I also added spinach to it. My picky 4yr ate all of it including the spinach that she normally wouldn"t eat.lol.

My husband and I made this for dinner this evening and it was FANTASTIC. Gina, you just keep amazing us every night. I actually did a mini promo for you on Facebook this morning telling friends to use skinnytaste.com!

We added fresh mushrooms, steamed asparagus, fresh spinach leaves to the saute mix. This is a meal that both my husband and I agreed that we would pay for if out at a restaurant. It was THAT good. Add a 4 oz glass of wine as the drink and it was just fabulous.

    Thank you, Gina!!!!

  87. This was delicious! I just made it tonight. Absolutely wonderful – it will become a favorite in our house!

  88. bought the ingredients and now I am very excited to make this tonight for my husband and my picky 3 year old! Love that I can have a filling 1 1//2 cups of it and still only 5 points!! Thank you Gina! I love your website and especially the mouth watering pictures!! xoxoxo

I use this site ALL the time and have loved just about everything I have tried! Thank you SOOO much! With help of this website it makes it tastey to lose weight! Down 32 lbs and counting! Thanks again!

  99. I have made this probably about 5 times and I love it everytime! I usually just throw in whatever veggies I have laying around, but last night I only had the tomatoes and it was still amazing! I threw a chopped shallot in with the garlic and YUM! I wish my husband was ok with us eating this everyday!

  100. I just made this last night and it turned out great! I didn't include the garlic because I don't eat it but it still tasted good! I just found your website a few weeks ago and I am so glad I did. I plan to continue trying new recipes off of here every week! Thanks Gina!

  101. This was amazing! I made this last night and it was so yummy. I used penne pasta instead though. Threw a little parmesan cheese on top and wow!!! This is def. a keeper!

  102. @Nikki and Lisa – Glad you like it! I just bought some grape tomatoes to make this again this week. Looking forward to it after all the comments.

  103. This is one of my favorite recipes from your site. My super picky husband asked for this for dinner tonight – we just had it last week as well 🙂

  104. I LOVE your site!!!! Just made this pasta for dinner, looked like such a simple dish but WOW what a taste!! I used fresh herbs that I grow..So so tasty and my husband was drooling…I found gourmet grape tomatoes? A little bigger.. Really nice – thank you! I just have to say, I am finding myself on your site daily and have made several dishes, all fab! I love WW but I do prefer to make whole food meals and find that a lot of people on the program buy processed foods and I am SO SO happy to have found your site.. to be honest, it doesn't get healthier than this! Many, many thanks from a huge fan!!! (who is getting smaller) Lisa ..

  105. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!

The instructors weren't 100% clear but It all came out ok. I also forgot to keep some of the cooking water making my pasta a tad dry but it didn't matter. The flavor was out of this world!!!

  106. Sorry you didn't like it Jenn, this is great when summer tomatoes are ripe and sweet from your garden. Perhaps the tomatoes weren't as sweet. We love this dish in the summer!

  107. Sadly, this has not been my favorite dish.It smelled great while cooking, but even after adding mor salt and papper and also having a rosemary flavored whole wheat pasta, it was slightly bland. I added some crushed red pepper and some garlic powder which helped a bit. I still LOVE this site, but this recipe will probably not be in my rotation, I'll just make your chicken parm instead!!!!

  108. Making this for dinner tomorrow night and was wondering how much chicken to use? I know the recipe says 2 breast halves, but would that be like one 8oz breast cut into 1 inch pieces?

  109. Just made this tonight, only I used angel hair multigrain pasta, and added more garlic and tomatoes, it was amazing! Thanks for the recipes!

  110. We have eaten a recipe form your blog every night for the last 2 weeks! They have all been keepers. We had this one last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you!

  111. I adore this recipe! I am a student on WW, and your blog has slowly been teaching me how to cook! Thank you so very much for posting these recipes – I always look forward to more!!

  112. Just finished making it- wow my boyfriend and I made it in about 12 mins… house smells delicious and it tastes incredible!!

So tasty, delicious and incredible its so low in points

    THANK YOU!!!!!!

  113. Thank you for your blog with the fab pics. It was so good. I couldn't believe how much food came out with one and half cups….yummy.

  114. I made this last night only I used shrimp instead of chicken and I sprinkled some goat cheese on top. I wish I had had fresh basil but I only had dried. It was still good.

  115. I know its hard when you first start but you'll get the hang of it. The great part about WW is you can eat just about anything if you cook it right.

  116. My husband and I are doing WW for the first time. I hated it the first week because I felt like I wasn't allowed to cook and cooking is my favorite thing to do. Then I found your website! I love it! I have tried a several of the recipes and loved all of them. This pasta dish was really good. I think the next time I am going to try using canned tomatoes because my husband didn't care for the skin on the grape tomatoes. It is so easy and great tasting! Thanks so much!

  117. Sounds like a nice touch adding balsamic. Thanks everyone for leaving a comment. Such a simple pasta dish, I love this too!

  118. I have made this recipe twice already and each time was equally delicious! I add a bit of balsamic vinegar at the end which gives it a nice kick. And thanks so much for your wonderful recipes and photographs, Gina! I'm getting back on the WW train with my husband and your site has made me EXCITED to start cooking again!

  119. I made this last night and my husband and daughter (both super picky) loved it as much as I did! I see in the comment above mention of chocolate zucchini bread?? Mmm! Going to look that one up now. Love your site!

  120. I've never posted a comment online before, but wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your recipes. I've made several so far, this one included, and all have been great (just made the chocolate zucchini bread for the 2nd time). Thanks so much for posting them, along with your beautiful photos!

  121. I just found your site and tried this recipe first – YUMMY! Even my 6 year old twins loved this meal. I can't wait to try other recipes!

That looks delicious! Like always you present us a delicious and healthy dish. I love the combination of pasta and chicken…mmmm…tasty!

  123. I made this tonight and it was so good! Even my hate-everything kids liked it, and that's a pretty big deal. Thanks so much for all the great recipes you post!

  124. I've just joined WW and now JUST discovered your blog and am SO thankful to you for making these recipes so readily available and FREE! Thank you so much from the VERY bottom of my heart! 🙂

  125. I made this dish this evening b/c I too had grape tomatoes from the garden. I added 1 c. shreaded zucchini and a few mushrooms which I also had in the fridge. It was very good. Thanks for all the great recipes. They are helping me get back on track.

  126. Thank goodness I have not went shopping yet. I am making this ASAP! It looks so light and yummy. Thanks for sharing.

    1. "I have not went" is proper grammar… "haven't = have not" grammar nazi, learn your english before you try to judge someone else on it.

    2. Wow! You two and your grammar nazi stuff nearly ruined the recipe! I'm trying it tonite, and thank you very much for sharing. We have grape tomatoes everywhere, and this will take care of several! Looks pretty easy, too! 🙂
