Sweet, succulent roasted chicken. Get a napkin and be prepared to get your fingers dirty!
Seems like everyone I know has read or watched the movie, Fifty Shades. I on the other hand have not read the book, but I do plan on seeing the movie just so I can see what the hype’s all about.
But I did get my hands on the Fifty Shades of Chicken: A Parody in a Cookbook. This cookbook is hilarious, with beautiful and somewhat risky nude photos of chicken… I couldn’t stop laughing. And the recipes are actually really good – talk about the perfect gift for a foodie/Christian Grey fan! Recipes like Steamy White Meat, Dripping Thighs, Bacon Bound Wings, Chicken Strip Tease, just to name a few. I couldn’t put it down or decide which to make, so I went with “Please Don’t Stop Chicken”.
I did have to modify the recipe to make it light. Originally it called for a whole chicken cut up, you can use any chicken parts you like but I went for drumsticks since I love them and they are leaner than thighs. I also removed the skin to reduce the fat, you really don’t mind because they are coated with a delicious glaze.
And this week only, I’m giving 10 copies of the Fifty Shades of Chicken: A Parody in a Cookbook away! To enter fill out the form below, ends Sunday!
Sticky Baked Chicken with Apricot, Sage and Lemon Zest
Ingredients
- 8 skinless drumsticks
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- fresh cracked pepper, to taste
- 5 sprigs fresh sage
- 1/2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 lemon
- 1/3 cup Polaner All Fruit apricot
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 large garlic clove, minced
Instructions
- In a large bowl, gently massage the chicken legs with salt and pepper. Add the sage and oil and toss. Marinate in the fridge 6 hours or overnight.
- Preheat the oven to 400°F. Grate the lemon zest from the lemon then squeeze the juice. Add the zest and juice to a small bowl and mix in the preserves, Worcestershire sauce and garlic.
- Pluck out the sage from the chicken and discard. Brush the sticky jam all over the chicken then place them in a baking dish, leaving plenty of breathing room. Bake 45 to 50 minutes, until the juices run clear when pricked. Serve hot and be prepared to burn your fingers.
Delish! Question: my sauce wasn’t very ” sticky” something I can do to or should have done to increase sticky consistency ? Will make again and again family loved it but would like to improve consistency with any suggestion you might have.
The sauce didn’t stay on the drumsticks, but it was delicious. I am going to try one poster’s idea to cook on the stove using chicken breasts. I am going to use that sauce again!
This recipe is delicious. No changes made and my husband went back for seconds. It turned out as a nice sticky glaze that looked almost a little broiled. It’s become part of our regular rotation now. Easy weeknight meal and so tasty.
Can you confirm you use one whole garlic and not one clove?
It is one large clove. Sorry for any confusion- it is updated now!
Mine were not sticky. They were tasty, but they didn’t get sticky. Wondering if you could put these in the air fryer? I really want to like these like everyone else!
I used chicken thighs for this, so I cut cooking time down. It was fantastic!!! Husband and I absolutely loved it! Woot!!☺❤🙌
Love your recipes!
Thank you!
could you use apple butter instead of apricot jam?
Really delicious and simple. I make with chicken tenderloins, and the sage and lemon plus apricot is a nice combination. My kids also randomly love!
Would this recipe work in the slow cooker??
I love all your recipes since counting macros! Can you please explain how you get 9 grams of fat for 2 drumsticks with oil?
Whenever I ask my fiancé what he wants me to make the response is always “sticky chicken.” He is not a fan of bones in chicken so I’ve adapted the recipe for chicken breast and make it in a skillet on the stove. I follow the Marinade and Apricot sauce directions to a T. Brown the chicken breasts first in the skillet and then add in the apricot mixture and bring everything to a boil so that the sauce gets gooey and reduced by half then I turn down the heat to simmer until I’m ready to serve. It’s always a hit and great for leftovers for lunch.. week if there ever are any leftovers.
Thanks Gina your recipes rock!
We’ve made this a handful of times and always double the sauce recipe. We’re likely using a lot more chicken than just 8 drums, and besides, extra sauce is always a good thing.
Love your recipes would never guess lo calorie, taste not spared ,thanks
Hi Gina! Thank you for starting Skinny Taste. I just started weight watchers and your site is amazing for it! I was going to make this tonight but just saw that you have to marinate the chicken for at least 6 hours. Should i want to forgo the sage, should I still put on olive oil prior to putting the mixture on it?
Thanks!
So when I read this,, I thought, “Eww apricot and sage?” But the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to try this recipe. I just finished making it with chicken thighs. OMG! It’s delicious!! So sweet and tangy. I thought I put enough salt and pepper while it was marinating overnight but I guess I didn’t. So next time after the glaze, I will add more salt and pepper. Paired nicely with buttermilk mashed potatoes and lemon roasted asparagus. Good news is I have the ingredients to make more! Thanks so much Gina!
You’re welcome! 🙂
This looks delicious and that cookbook sounds hilarious. I would definitely love a copy for my library. I will definitely be making this recipe, thanks for sharing!
Thank you for all the entertainment lol
If I wanted to make these in a slow cooker, how long and on what setting would you recommend? Also, would you alter the amount of any of the ingredients? Thanks for your help!
It will change the dish, you can cook it 4 to 6 hours on low. Let me know how it turns out!
love this recipe, did it in the crock pot for a couple hours and then reduced the sauce. Can you tell me the weight of the chicken legs-they vary so much. Or the cut off the bone weight. Thank you
Frances
I usually buy the small drumsticks.
LOVE your website! With smart points now, what is the saturated fat in grams? Thanks! Kathy
Also if I use sugarfree apricot jam I would guess that the sugar content would be 0? Thanks Gina
Kathy, I made it with sugar free jam, and while still very good, it didn’t caramelise nearly as much as in the photos, so next time I’ll go for the full blast sugar version 😀
The recipe looks delicious. I'm getting my chicken out of the freezer now.
Aye yi yi……ANYWAY, thanks Gina for sharing your hard word and yet another amazing recipe. This was great! Made it with cauliflower rice and green beans and it was a huge, huge hit 🙂
I made this recipe tonight using chicken breasts. I followed it exactly; except doubled it because I had 6 breasts and not enough glaze. It never really got "sticky" just kinda rolled off the chicken. Did I do something wrong?
Gina – when entering this recipe into recipe builder on WW, do I put it in as cooked or uncooked chicken? I've seen this question asked before but I cannot find the thread again. This recipe was amazing. And sticky is an understatement! Thank you!
Uncooked
oh my goodness this chicken was AMAZING! I ate every piece!!! Gina, if I want to make it again in the future with chicken breast how would I calculate the points?? 1 point plus per oz of chicken?
Thanks so much for the amazing recipe!!! =]
So glad you liked it! I would put it in recipe builder to get the exact points.
Gina, I made this chicken recipe specifically to spite all the haters commenting on here about how disappointed they are that you would dare associate yourself and your blog with the 50 Shades fad. Ladies, get off your soap box and busy yourself with real life issues. This is a food blog and a fictional piece of literature we're talking about, both intended for enjoyment. If you don't like either one then move along. I made this recipe for my uber conservative (and none the wiser) Mother in law and guess what? The fiery gates of hell didn't open and swallow her up. The only thing that was swallowed up was this delicious chicken. The excitement of these books will fade but this chicken recipe will last…and I'll have a little smirk on my face every time I serve it. Cheers Gina, keep up the good work!
LOL, happy you enjoyed the chicken!
Hi Gina. I love your site. I have made several recipes now and love them. I am going to make these tomorrow night. Thanks so much for all you do. As for 50 Shades of Grey. Take a chill pill ladies. It is only a book and the name used as a parody for the recipe. If you don't like it, don't read it. If you don't like the parody don't use this site.
It seems some people need to relocate their sense of humor. If you don't appreciate the theme of the book and/or movie, fine. Teach your kids these lessons you consider to be so invaluable. Fine. But most of us are adults, including Gina, and we don't need to be lectured. I haven't read the book, and I don't intend to see the movie, but it has nothing to do with being bothered by the theme. The subject matter just doesn't appeal to me. Find something to busy yourselves, ladies. Unfortunately, there is much more to get upset about in life than some subpar book and subsequent movie about two consenting adults engaging in questionable sexual activity.
We loved this recipe!!! Thank you, Gina!! 🙂
I made the recipe last night! So delicious and the hubby loved it too! Will be a repeat in my house. It's so nice to have easy ways to help dress up chicken. THANK YOU.
Finally, a review that was from someone that actually tried the recipe and not about it's loose reference to the 50 Shades of Grey series!
but then you had to bring it back to the 50 shades series.
Wow people are so crazy. Gina this chicken looks fantastic! Great to pop in and let bake while company arrives for dinner. Thanks for always sharing such unique recipes!
can you make the glaze ahead of time and keep refrigerated?
Oh PS Gina, do you think it would work to make a large batch of the glaze to save in a jar? Because I see us making this pretty often!
Made this tonight. We had boneless/skinless chicken breast on hand and used that, and your recommendation of 30 minutes was perfect. This was SO GOOD.
Fantastic…5 out of 5 stars. I used thighs, rosemary (didn't have sage – chopped rosemary fine and left in for cooking). Also subbed soy sauce for worchestershire. This will be repeated, and likely adapted for the crock pot. I posted a photo on Instagram with your hashtag. Thanks for a terrific recipe!!
This recipe looks delicious! I have a question though. When I put the ingredients into the recipe builder on WW, I get 9 points instead of 6. I know this is due to the drumsticks but I can't figure out how to make the points match what you have here. I have this same problem with the maple-dijon drumsticks, which I love. Any advice? Thank you Gina!
Dear Gina! Ignore the drama! You are an amazing cook…. I have followed the blog for a very long time! When I saw your post I knew some of the comments were going to be negative…very negative… and I was right…. this is such a controversial topic right now…. sadly the devout Christians are bringing it up more than anyone… My facebook feed is full of why you should not see the movie stories…. I am a Christian and I have mixed feelings about it….. but they are giving more advertising by talking about it so much than anyone…. The recipe looks great! Keep cooking! Ignore the haters…
Thanks…glad you liked the chicken though…lol
I used the juice of a whole lemon and it was too much. Sadly it's all you can taste. I would try half next time. I used boneless chicken breasts for 30 minutes and was great other than too much lemon. I think boneless thighs would be great to try.
Ladies! Stay Calm … and Cook on!
What about adding red pepper flakes to this chicken dish?
This cookbook looks amazing! I can't wait to try the recipe!
Ooh, I recently started trying all kinds of recipes with chicken with sauces made from different kinds of preserves/jams (orange, apricot, pineapple), and my oh my it turns out so good every time! The preserves make for an amazing sticky finger-licking good sauce every time! I love the addition of sage to this. Perfect.
So back on topic, would I cook this the same with boneless, skinless thighs? It looks delicious and I bet it smells great.
Oh my, this looks so delicious 🙂
I made this tonight and my family loved it! I hope I win the cookbook (fingers crossed)! Thanks Gina!
Looks like a simple, easy dish to prepare and I am sure it will be delicious. Thanks for a chance to win the cookbook.
Lovely recipe! Will be giving this a try very soon. I love how you make everything health and WW friendly!
I read the book…didn't like at all…no plans to waste my time seeing movie…however, I love chicken and I think the cook book could be a hoot!
Thanks for this recipe….sounds delish!
I am another who hasn't read the book and as I can't remember the last time I saw a movie I didn't get free from the library I probably will never see it either. However, you cannot have missed the hype over both for the last several years so controversy aside the cookbook really does look amusing and truly more my style anyhow. I used to do something similar with orange marmalade and this sounds like a great variation!
This recipe looks delicious! I love all the great comments about the book and movie!
Hi, Gina! May I omit the sage? Thank you so much for your delicious and easy recipes!! 🙂
could you use dried sage instead??
I have a wry sense of humor, so the photo alone on the book is worth getting.
Wow – who knew a chicken recipe would get people so up in arms! Either way, looks delicious to me!
Let fiction be fiction, let chicken be chicken, and enjoy them as is.
Love the recipe, will try it this week. As for the other ……..haven't read the books, haven't seen the movie, no desire to do either….my choice……everybody has choices and I wouldn't presume to judge.
I purchased that cookbook as a gag gift for a holiday gift exchange at work,. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to keep it for myself!
Anonymous, Those of us who believe in a God ordained marriage and sexual relationship will always be ridiculed. It is sad that we have to have this topic on a food blog! I just started following this blog and I am very disappointed that the book was mentioned.
It IS sad. The road is narrow and only a few will find it.
Your readers need to lighten-up. Hello isTs a parody cookbook.
Everyone needs to get over themselves… give Gina a break! A good laugh now and again is as healthy as the recipe! Lighten up folks-strip that crispy skin off, great job Gina! And YES, I'd love to win a copy of the book!
Domestic violence is not funny
I agree! It's a recipe for crying out loud. It's not domestic violence when the participant is willing.
Clearly you know nothing about domestic violence. People are groomed and the abuse is gradual. They are looking for love and are willing to place themselves in harm's way for it. They don't realize it is abuse until it is sometimes too late. They are emotionally manipulated and the lines get blirred. ducate yourself before you become a victim.
Would love a crockpot version of this recipe.
A recipe blog is no place to comment about your stance on the 50 Shades of Grey book or movie. The cookbook is a parody. With recipes. Hence, a recipe blog. Great work, Gina!
The place to comment is the place where the subject is raised.
Then go comment on the book and movie!
I love Gina and her blog. But the fact that this topic comes up so casually is a testament about the sad state our society is in. I don't need to smoke crack to know that it's detrimental to the health and lives of those who use it and our communities as a whole. Ladies, let's try to raise the standards in our lives and not just in health and nutrition.
I'm a little confused… How is smoking crack even remotely comparable to going to see a movie involving BDSM? The movie is not a drug, it is not an addiction, it doesn't get your children taken away from you by social services….. I'm just not seeing the similarities.
BDSM existed long before the 50 Shades books were ever even written. If it's not your cup of tea, don't do it. If you don't want to watch it, don't go see the movie. Stop demonizing people just because they have different interests and values of entertainment than you.
Peace.
Why am I seeing references to this movie on a recipe site? Umm.. domestic violence anyone?
Because apparently women love this stuff….. $90 million at the box office first weekend….Yes a majority of that 90 million was from women
It is not about domestic violence.

If only you were so careful and discreet about what makes you laugh and what offends many of your readers. Glorifying abuse for a silly chicken recipe is pathetic. I am very disappointed in your.
Gina, you have been my main go to site for several years now. My main Christmas gift was your cookbook! This website should not be turned into such a controversial topic and I am really sorry it was introduced. There is no need to go see the movie to know what all the hype is about – you already KNOW what the hype is about. Be careful eyes what you see, be careful ears what you hear, be careful hands what you do and be careful feet where you go, and be careful mouth what you say. I believe you want to think twice about watching this. Once you see it, you can't take it back and you will have introduced it into your marriage and thoughts. It will be there forever ever. Don't be casual about this choice.
I'm so excited to try this recipe! Can you recommend any of your side dishes that I could make with it?
Bahaha not only is the cookbook name hilarious, this sounds delicious!
Looking forward to making this recipe with chicken breasts. The cookbook looks like fun, always looking for new chicken recipes!
Sorry, Gina. I don't care how delicious the recipe sounds, I simply cannot bring myself to try it, simply because of the association it has with "50 Shades of Grey". I love your recipes, however, I'm a bit disappointed that you showcased this cookbook, thereby lending tacit support/agreement to the "50 Shades" franchise.
Thank you for letting me voice my opinion.
Janet, this is your THIRD comment on this blog entry. It might be more helpful if you made the chicken, and posted thoughts about the recipe.
Anonymous, it's a free country, and I can voice my opinion when and where I believe it needs to be heard. Too many women buy into this movie and book franchise without a second thought. If Gina is offended by my comments, she's free to take them down, and at no offense to me. As for you, obviously you've trolled through all the comments in order to find how many I've made, so who's the one with the real issue, I wonder?
Ha un aspetto divino questo pollo!
Hah! That cookbook looks hilarious!
Oh no! How did a movie about "sexual practices involving bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism" (Wikipedia) end up on my favorite food blog! The recipe looks great but I find nothing funny about a cookbook or movie/book that does not respect women, men and real relationships. The family kitchen is not a place to make light of the serious effects of pornography and violence against women.
it was more for the recipe…that just happened to come from the 50 shades of chicken cookbook.
If you read the books, they are actually about a real relationship and abuse that he actually suffered. He does not beat her and she does not do anything she doesn't want to do. The third book ends with them married and with two children.
Erin,
The books do a disservice to women in portraying Grey's actions as acceptable in the context of the BDSM community. This is not an accurate representation of their practices!! The female character is coerced throughout the entire series, so much so that none of her "choices" are truly her own. It both saddens and angers me that so many women have been deluded into believing that this series has a "happy ending".
Seriously tired of people who haven't read the books turn their noses up at them. I think the books were great.
I also thought the books – especially 2 and 3 were great. It is a love story.
I totally agree with Erin and this Anon. I sincerely hope the people who are so appalled by 50 Shades of Grey are equally appalled by The Hunger Games – a book about children murdering each other. It's fiction. People seriously need to relax.
Wow, best comment ever about the comparison with the Hunger Games! 😀
The recipe looks delicious. I'm getting my chicken out of the freezer now.
Amen to Angie's comment above. Gina, please donate your movie ticket money to a battered women's shelter instead. You, not to mention the shelter, would be better off for it.
Great idea, Rebecca!!!
Perfect suggestion, Rebecca! As an RN/NP and sexual assault nurse examiner I have seen 1000's of abused adults and children. No one should support this behavior even in a "fictitious" format.
I disagree, that's like saying no one should read Huckleberry Finn because it portrays black people as slaves. I might like to read horror stories but that doesn't translate to me in real life thinking I should hatchet people. Fiction is fiction because its fictional.
Looks great! Why do you marinate in just the oil and not the preserve mix?
The chicken looks delicious! On another note, I would encourage all women to take a HARD look at the 50 Shades of Grey phenomenon and ask themselves, "What is this doing to our society?" Romanticizing and glamorizing sexual exploitation and violence against women is just plain dangerous. Girls, we are BETTER than that. Let's take a stand against it! For the sake of all the nameless women who experience that reality every day.
http://endsexualexploitation.org/fiftyshadesgrey/
You obviously haven't read the books.
Angie, I agree completely!! The book and movie do nothing more than try and make sexual and emotional abuse look sweet and romantic! Wake up, women!! It also does a disservice to the BDSM community, as Grey's practices are NOT how BDSM works!! I don't need to read the book or see the movie!!
Just a little me lemon zest and the juice of a whole lemon ?
Looks delicious
Do you think this would work in the slow cooker? Would you cook it for a similar time to your Maple Dijon Drumsticks?
Thanks for this! We were gifted apricot preserves but we're not big fans. This looks like a great compromise
this looks delicious! Any ideas on what sides would go good with it?
Green beans or asparagus with rice
I hate apricots. Could I substitute orange marmalade instead?
I think that would be good with some teriyaki instead of worcestershire!
I think orange marmalade would be great; it is less sweet, more tart than apricot so taste and adjust glaze to your liking.
Recipe looks good. I will try it next week. I would love to have the cook book. I’m trying to change my eating habits because of serious illnesses. It’s hard to make changes when you are over sixty.
Can you make this recipe with boneless chicken breasts? If so, is there any adjustment to the cooking time?
I don't see why you couldn't, I would cut the cooking time down, maybe 30 min?
Hi Gina- 1 large garlic…. do you mean a clove or the entire garlic bulb?
Clove
