Adding to my list of air fryer recipes, this simple method for air frying a sweet potato! I love making baked sweet potatoes in the air fryer because it’s quicker since you don’t have to preheat the air fryer like you do an oven and the sweet potatoes come out perfectly – fluffy in the center with crisp skin. If you don’t have an air fryer, check out my Oven-Baked Sweet Potatoes.

First off, this is the air fryer I have and love, and trust me after writing 2 air fryer cookbooks, I have tried a lot. I have the 7 quart, perfect for making a whole chicken.

What is healthier: baked sweet potato or baked potato?

Baked sweet potatoes and baked potatoes are both very healthy. If your goal is to add more fiber to your diet, then I’d go with a sweet potato. However, both types would be great additions to any diet. They both have a lot to offer:

  • Sweet potatoes have about 50% more fiber than a russet potato, but they have about the same amount of protein.
  • Sweet potatoes are loaded with more vitamins A and C than baked potatoes, while regular potatoes have more potassium and folate.

Tips for the Perfect Air Fryer Baked Sweet Potatoes

  • Buy sweet potatoes that don’t have soft skin, wrinkles, cracks, or soft spots.
  • Store sweet potatoes in a cool, dry place for three to five weeks.
  • Pierce sweet potatoes all over with a fork before air frying.

How long does it take to air fry sweet potatoes?

Sweet potatoes take about 35-45 minutes to cook at 370F degrees in the air fryer, which is less time than they take in the oven.

How to Serve Baked Sweet Potatoes

There are so many ways to serve baked sweet potatoes. The simplest way to eat them is with butter (or coconut oil if you’re dairy-free) on top – a little goes a long way. Another easy option that’s calorie-free is to sprinkle on chili powder, cumin, cinnamon, or pumpkin spice.

You can also stuff sweet potatoes with different fillings. Some delicious ideas are these Slow Cooker Chicken Enchilada Stuffed Sweet Potatoes, Loaded Vegetarian Baked Sweet Potato, and Italian Stuffed Sweet Potatoes.

  1. This is the recipe I chose for my first Air Fryer use. I love sweet potatoes and was not dissapointed at all! They taste great. Perfect!

    1. Lining the air fryer with foil or parchment paper blocks the circulation of air in the fryer defeating its purpose. I guess you could put something on the very bottom, below the shelf the food sits on to collect the mess., but you want to allow air flow all around your food so it cooks evenly and thoroughly. When you do this, your food often cooks in less time 🙂 My sweet potato took 25 mins to cook and it was delicious!

Cooking can be a messy event though, so there is always gonna be cleaning to do after 🙂

  2. Gin, will u be doing a vegan or vegetarian cookbook? & a cookbook non-gluten, sugar free, non-dairy, etc… For gastritis health concern?? My g- daughter was just diagnosed with gastritis & she is the type that is strict about what she consumes. We need a cookbook designed just for GASTRITIS with non-gluten & non-dairy. Thank u, love this recipe! This is 1 of my 1st recipes of many i will trying of yours! 😋

    1. I don’t have plans for that at this time–but maybe in the future! I do have recipes on the site with those options though– look under the recipe key. 🙂

    1. Just want say in Gina’s defense that she did say 370° in her recipe, but I’d assume the time would be according to the SIZE of the sweet potato, so prob u would have to use trial & error on the time, beginning with 30 mins for small potatoes. I hope this helps & happy eating!! Love air fryers & cuts down on time & HEAT in the kitchen!😋💙😋

  3. Thank you for this info. My air fryer won’t go to 370 (375 or 360) lol, so I made some adjustments. I also dabbled coconut oil all over it, just coz! You could then sprinkle on salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper or whatever you like (pumpkin pie spice). I’m in a plain mood tonight so it’s just oil. Will have to keep track of the time, coz my temp isn’t yours.

OK, here I go…2 clean sweet potatoes, poked with holes with fork. Do I need to pre-heat my air fryer to 370 degrees or just put them in? I’ll write more later.

  5. Thank you! I want to love my air fryer and use it more often. I appreciate these easy recipes for beginners to use their kitchen gadgets.

  6. Thank you for this. As a beginner with an air fryer, I need to know the temperature and how long to cook for even the most basic things. I love sweet potatoes and can’t wait to try these!

I think this recipe sounds really easy. I am looking to buy an Air Fryer but don’t know what brand to buy or what the difference is. You said you love yours but only said it is a 7 quart. Can I ask what brand/kind it is and is it easy to use?

    Thank you

    1. Im sorry if im butting in, but ive owned 1 the basket slides in/out & i now, thx to my daughter, have a MULTIFUNCTIONAL air fryer & i ABSOLUTELY love it! Air fryer that also has a bake option, rotisserie, dehydrator, a rotating basket (no more pulling out basket to shake fries). I LOVE it so much for its muti uses. Also, can bake more food at once. Ck them out!!
