The word “Bento” is a Japanese term used to describe a meal in a box. Bento boxes have been quite popular for school lunch these past few years, and happens to be the only type of lunchbox I’ve ever used for Madison because she never liked school lunch or sandwiches. Instead, I always fill her box up with all the foods she loves, and focus on making easy, nutritious lunches bursting with color that I know she will actually eat.

The inspiration from this lunch box actually came from Madison, I usually turn to her for lunch box ideas since she’s the one eating it. She loves tortillas, turkey and bacon so we just rolled them all up together with a little lettuce and mayo and cut them up in bite sized pieces. Then I filled the rest of her lunch box with all her favorites – cucumbers, tomatoes, eggs, grapes, etc.

Variations and Tips

  • If your kids don’t like mayo, cream cheese can be used instead.
  • Swap the turkey and bacon with ham and cheese.
  • You can double or triple the wraps to make-ahead. Wrap tight in plastic, it should be good refrigerated 2 to 3 days.

Tips and Notes for Making Crave-worthy Bento Boxes

  • Use small cookie cutters in shapes to cut veggies such as cucumbers, carrots, etc.
  • Think of the rainbow and keep everything colorful.
  • Prep as much as you can the night before so your mornings are stress free.
  • Leave notes in their lunch box, Madison loves when I do!
