Salpicón is a fresh homemade Colombian fruit beverage. It's served cold and loaded with chopped fruit such as watermelon, papaya, strawberries, pineapple, oranges, apples, bananas and carbonated soda. Serve it with a spoon to eat the fruit then drink the juice when the fruit is all gone. Thirst quenching on a hot summer day and perfect as an afternoon snack or dessert.
It's been years since I walk the busy cobblestone streets of Colombia filled with street vendors in the center of town. A tropical country with a warm climate and an abundance of fresh fruit year round. How I loved to sample all the wonderful assortment of tropical fruits, delicious street food and beverages unique to that country. Salpicón was one of those treats I never forgot. I actually searched for the recipe I while back but couldn't find one, then just last week I found out my aunt makes this all the time! So thanks to my aunt, you too can try this delicious fresh homemade fruit punch too.
This makes a large amount and would fill a large punch bowl; great for back yard parties. Although it's usually made with champagne kola, I made this with Sprite Zero instead and thought it tasted just as good. You could really use any sparkling soda you desire, we even played around with a fresh watermelon juice/seltzer combo to give you healthier options.
As for the fruit, watermelon and fresh pineapple is a must as it gives you lots of juice; you could substitute whatever fruit is in season near you. Mango and peaches would be great too and you could certainly make half the amount.

Okay, I know you took the NI and put it into the calculator and came up with 2 points, but if the only ingredients are fruit and soda I would not consider this cheating to count it all as 0 points.
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOSH.. Looking at this makes me Happy! Gonna try it this weekend. Sadly I'll have to leave out the pineapples since I'm allergic but everything in it sounds SO yummy :)
ReplyDeleteThis looks delicious! Think it would be good served up with moscato instead of sprite??
ReplyDeleteEG- I won't tell!
ReplyDeleteEllie- You will LOVE it! Oh use mango in place of the pineapple then.
Kier - I bet that would be fabulous : )
oh wow. I've been thinking about doing something like this, but couldn't put it all together in my mind. Thank you so much. I see this in my future this weekend.
ReplyDeletewow sounds yummy! my aunt in mexico makes a dish called salpicon, but it consists of a cold beef salad eaten on tostadas.
ReplyDeleteWow, this looks insane! I'm going to try this over the weekend.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. And so are your pictures.
ReplyDeleteoh, that`s great! It reminds me about sangria :) and I love your bubble glasses!
ReplyDeleteoh my WORD! i need to make this with a quickness.
ReplyDeletedefinitely going to share this!
ReplyDeleteThat looks delicious, I can't wait to try it. I think I'll take the banana out, but I think I might add some pomegranate.
ReplyDeleteOMG can't wait to give this a try thanks for sharing =D
ReplyDeleteThis looks great! I know you recommended subbing Mango for Pineapple, but I'm highly allergic to Kiwi. Do you recommend mango as a replacement, as well? Or is there a different fruit you recommend?
ReplyDeleteHow interesting. I always knew salpicon as a Columbian shredded beef salad. I learn something new every day.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it is served in Columbia with a dollop of vanilla ice cream to top it off...it certainly would skew the points...but how wonderful!
ReplyDeleteWhoa! When I saw Salpicon in the title for this dish, I was so excited. I LOVE Salpicon. But, when I went to the recipe, I was shocked because it is a fruit drink. The Salpicon I've had is a beef salad. LOL!!! How funny! I don't speak Spanish and don't know the literal translation of the word. The dish I expected is like this one: http://www.food.com/recipe/salpicon-spicy-mexican-beef-salad-65156 I guess now I can have 2 salpicons! I LOVE your recipes and your site. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteEG is right...this IS zero points. Yum!
ReplyDeleteDanielle - Sure, you can replace the kiwi with mango. My aunt usually adds cantaloupe so if you would like to add that instead you could. I dislike cantaloupe so I left it out.
ReplyDeleteJudy yes, some people add ice cream or condensed mil on top!
Hi Linda - Different Latin countries have their own unique recipes so that does not surprise me that Mexico has a recipe completely different to Colombia with the same name.
The cold beef salad sounds like it would be great too.
So beautiful and refreshing looking! I am keeping this on my must try list for the summer!
ReplyDeleteI'm totally going to make this at my next get together. This sounds amazing...thanks for the recipe. I'm a new follower and I'm very happy to have found your blog.
ReplyDeleteFirst, look at the bounty of fruit!
ReplyDeleteSecond, how do you say it?
Third, bet it would be great with a shot of vodka or rum per glass :)
Thanks Natasha and Pam, wish I had more!!
ReplyDeleteIt is what it is - let's see it would be pronounced like this... sol-pea-cone and yes, I'm sure it would be!!
i am so excited - i'm helping put together a latin potluck with my church, and i just found what i'm bringing. yum!!
ReplyDeleteThey make DIET champagne?? I'll have to check that out.
ReplyDeleteSorry Lori, it's a champagne cola, not the same as champagne but I'm sure non-alcoholic champagne is probably diet!
ReplyDeleteCould I substitute the apple for something else? I'm allergic.
ReplyDeleteAny fruit could be substituted, I probably would leave the watermelon,
ReplyDeleteSounds wonderful! If you combine the chopped fruit and refrigerate a while before adding the soda, do you have to worry about the fruit browning?
ReplyDeleteThey didn't brown for me and I chopped them all the night before. I kept it in a sealed tupperware.
ReplyDeleteWOW this looks great! Is there any way to freeze it? I am probably the only one in my household that will eat it, and even cutting the recipe in half I am afraid I may have to freeze some (if it last long enough, I have a feeling I will eat it up quick!). Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI suppose you could freeze the fruit, then add the soda in smaller portions.
ReplyDeleteWow that's a gorgeous drink....think we may have to enjoy some over the 4th. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI hope you make it, it's so refreshing and delicious!
ReplyDeleteSuper scrumptious! I will definitely try this and the vividly fruit-full Frozen Fruit Pops...maybe add some blueberries too! Thanks and Happy Weekend!
ReplyDeletelove it
ReplyDeleteI have not tried this but I want to clarify, I always thought Salpicon was a beef dish. My mom made it when I was growing up. It is shredded beef marinated in Italian dressing overnight then baked with green chili, garbanzo beans and cheese.
ReplyDeleteNever knew it was a drink!
This drink is been one of my favorite growing up and still is. Its very famous in colombia. My mom always made it for me. they sell it every where n in the streets vendors would sell in lil cars. Got I miss my country COLOMBIA!!!
ReplyDeleteso wait, you said you played around with watermelon and seltzer. should I just substitute seltzer for the sprite zero or does it need to be half seltzer half watermelon juice kind of deal ???

ReplyDeleteI once had this in an Argentine Restaurant except it was with freshly squeezed orange juice. Gosh, it was amazing. My fave drink ever.
ReplyDeleteI used Fresca and this literally saved me during Mardi Gras!
