My favorite way to enjoy fall fruit is baked, sometimes with a little yogurt, or a little ice cream for dessert, much like I do with these delicious baked apples. Here, I baked the pears with cinnamon, honey and walnuts – it doesn’t get simpler that this!

I had some beautiful ripe Royal Riviera pears on my counter from Harry & David and didn’t want to waste them, so I cut them in half, cored them and baked them in the oven this morning. While they baked my kitchen smelled heavenly! They turned out even better than I hoped – I had one for breakfast with a little yogurt, but this would also make a wonderful dessert.

What are the best pears for baking?

I love Royal Riviera, Bosc and Anjou for baking for the best texture and taste.

  • 2 large ripe pears
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp honey
  • 1/4 cup crushed walnuts
  • optional yogurt or frozen yogurt


  • Preheat the oven to 350F.
  • Cut the pears in half and place on a baking sheet (I cut a sliver off the other end so they sat upright).
  • Using a measuring spoon or melon baller, scoop out the seeds.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon, top with walnuts and drizzle 1/2 teaspoon honey over each one.
  • Bake in the oven 30 minutes. Remove, let cool and enjoy!

  5. Yesterday I bought real Prussian pears in Königsberg,which were planted in Prussia even before the annexation of Prussia by the USSR.The pears were not sweet,I baked them in the oven-the taste of pears changed for the better,they became sweet and tasty, very tasty with coffee.

  10. Found this recipe when looking for a way to use up some of the exact same pears from Harry & David!  Each one is big enough to feed all four of us, so we needed to find a way to use them up. I made the recipe as is, and then added a drizzle of maple syrup over them just before serving them. They were a big hit – soft and delicious.  Will make again!

  11. I love this dessert. I actually make this almost every night. I pile some blackberries or blueberries on top of the pear half before baking and save the honey for when it’s done. So yummy! A little serving of vanilla no sugar added ice cream on the side and it is just to die for! Even eating this every night for dessert, my husband has lost 22 pounds and I’ve lost 19 pounds in a little over 2 months.

    I used almonds since I didn’t have walnuts and it turned out great. I baked them a bit longer for 40 minutes and ate it with plain Greek yogurt.
    So so so good!!!

  19. Really delicious!  I had two ripe pears and this was the perfect recipe.  Substituted pecans for walnuts as that is what I had on hand and paired with Greek yogurt.  Will make this again!

  25.  This recipe was so simple that I made it immediately after finding this recipe online. I actually had just picked some pairs. I had honey and cinnamon but had just recently finished my walnuts. So I made it with just three ingredients the pears the honey the cinnamon. We enjoyed it very much.

  39. This was excellent and very easy. However, my walnuts were still raw tasting after only 30 minutes in the oven. I would suggest cooking them a bit before using them.

  50. I just made this for dessert last night…really didn’t expect it to be that great. I was wrong.  I put a dollop of Ellenos plain Greek yogurt on top (this is the best yogurt on the planet…and if you live in Portland, Oregon you can buy it). I sprinkled the fruit and plate with a little cinnamon sugar for each serving,  it looked beautiful. It tasted sweet and creamy.  It would be equally good for breakfast.  And it was so simple…

  59. Wonderful and healthy alternative than traditional desserts. Note, if you want your pears to stay in place without cutting the bottom, just make a aluminum cradle under the neck part of the pear.

  63. i wiped sliced pears with lemon juice to stall browning, substituted pecans for walnuts, put 1/2 pat of butter in each core hole, sprinkled some brown sugar, drizzled with honey and added pecans. not low cal, but what the heck. jim

    • I was wondering about adding raisins, or cranberries or dried cherries. I’ll giving it a try. This would as as a gift for a friend on a diet.

  66. Do you know if these hold up well if eaten the next day? Maybe zap them in the microwave before eating?

    • I made a bunch of these and they kept in the fridge just fine for almost a week. Like you said just microwave for 20 seconds and they're good to go.

    • Sandra, I did this with Gala Apples last week because I dislike pears. and it came out great. just make sure to choose a sweet type of apple like gala or honeycrisp and you should be good to go.

  76. Sounds easy and tasty. I've baked Bosc pears. Cut in half, spray with cooking oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper (yes, really), place cut side down so there is a bit of carmelization. Serve sprinkled with Feta cheese and walnuts. Ummm..
