The unique ingredient that makes these Filipino BBQ Pork Skewers so good is a can of 7-Up soda! They’re perfect for summer grilling!

Filipino BBQ Pork Skewers

Filipino BBQ Pork Skewers

If you want to make a delicious recipe at your next BBQ that will wow everyone, these Filipino BBQ Skewers are it. I’ve tried this 7-Up marinade with beef, pork and chicken and it’s great on everything! Other skewers I love all summer are grilled Salmon Kebabs, Steak Kebabs with Chimichurri, and Pesto Chicken Skewers.

Why We Love This Recipe

One of Tommy’s good friends is Filipino and he always brings these BBQ Pork Skewers to summer parties. I got this recipe from him many years ago! The marinade is so good on any protein!! A few notes about this:

  • Marinade: It seems like a lot of sugar and soy sauce, but most of the marinade gets discarded. I measured the marinade before and it was 2 cups, and after, it was 2 tablespoons left. I adjusted this in the nutritional info.
  • Pork: Tommy’s friend uses fattier cuts of pork, but I found boneless pork ribs had just enough fat. Feel free to use whatever cut you wish.

Ingredients You Will Need:

This is everything you’ll need to make these BBQ Filipino pork skewers. See exact measurements in the recipe card below.

BBQ Pork ingredients with 7 up
  • Pork – I use country style pork ribs but you can use any pork with some marbling. You can also use chicken or beef, instead.
  • 7-Up Marinade: 7-up soda helps tenderize the pork and is commonly used in may recipes. It also adds sweetness. Soy sauce and a savory, saltiness to the pork. White vinegar, and lemon add acidity. Brown sugar gives it the perfect balance of sweentness, while garlic, black pepper and crushed red pepper flakes (optional) enhance the flavor.

How To Make Filipino BBQ Pork Skewers

This is great for summer parties because you can prep them ahead. Then grill when friends come over.

  1. This is so easy to do, simply combine the ingredients for the marinade in a bowl, add the pork and marinate at least 6 hours, or overnight for best results.
  2. When ready, discard the marinade and thread the pork onto the skewers. If using bamboo skewers, be sure to soak them 30 minutes in water so they don’t burn on the grill.
  3. When ready to cook, grill over medium heat 5 to 6 minutes on each side, or until cooked through.

This dish was delicious! I find if i follow the recipe for all skinnytaste recipes they turn out great every single time. Im so thankful for all the work that goes into bringing me easy and delicious recipes!!

  2. As usual these did not disappoint! I used ginger ale cause that was what I had on hand and also added some minced ginger as well. Put them on the smoker for about 20 minutes at 275 and they came out perfect

  3. Excellent!!! My family loved it! Soooo easy and delicious. I paired it with the ST coleslaw and the corn and tomato salad.

  4. I made these in the air fryer and it is SO good. I did 400 for 15 minutes, but could have gotten away with 10-12.

  5. Filipino household here. Hubby makes these and the recipe is spot on. For choice of meat though, try pork shoulder or pork butt. The fat after you grill these are fire

  6. Made this for dinner tonight. Another great recipe. Made your coleslaw recipe which also very, very good. Fresh corn on cob and a veggie. A great meal!

We love this recipe, we just had it last night with leftovers for lunch today.
I usually use a 1 1/2 lb pork loin rather than country spare ribs , just easier to cut. Sometimes I even take the easier way out and cut them in medallions .
I put them on a cooking rack and put it right on our Traeger, 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes depending on how thick I cut them.

  8. I used this marinade for chicken kebabs to take camping and it was delicious. I’d like to try it with the pork as listed too, but we just had pulled pork, so I went with chicken breast.

  9. Definitely need to marinate this overnight. I was in a rush to make supper so not all of the chicken on the skewers had the flavor but the ones at the bottom of the bowl …. OMG… brought me back to my childhood. Thanks for the perfect recipe!

    1. Julius – did you find the flavor similar to a Chicken Adobo? I’ve been trying for quite a while to find a recipe that really has that same flavor, and I’ve not been successful! This one seems like it might be really close.

When I put all this into WW it tells me is 5 points if you make 16 skewers, but the recipe says the serving size is 4oz, which leads me to believe there should only be 10 skewers (40oz of next to start with), which makes the points 8. Am I doing something wrong in my calculations? We are eating this tonight for dinner.

  11. I’ve seen several people ask about the calorie count.  I looked up just the 4 oz  serving for Tyson boneless pork ribs on my fitness pal app.  They are 140 calories & 5 grams of fat.  So maybe that will give us something to go by.

  12. Omg!!! This is by far the best marinade EVER!  We marinated it for 2 days bc we went out and got back too late to make them and I think it made it even better. So tender and flavorful. My husband isn’t the easiest person to wow when it comes to new recipes. Usually he’ll say “Yeah it’s good” or “It’s pretty good” but tonight I got “Wow. This pretty damn good”!  Thank you for this. It will be made again and again.

  13. I love these so much! I have made them several times. As for a side, I usually have corn on the cob

  14. I make this ALL the time because my husband and I love it! I live in place where pork products are not sold, so we use an incredibly lean cut of beef to make this recipe. It has slightly more calories than pork, but not too much. If you're anti-pork or can't get it, its an excellent substitute. The longer you let it marinade, the better it is!

  15. You use bone-in pork ribs and then cut the meat off the rib bones into 1 inch cubes? Is that correct?

    1. No, use country style pork ribs. This is a boneless piece of meat with some fat that is good for BBQ because it won’t dry out like pork tenderloin.

My husband wants me to make these once a week! And he says he doesn't like Filipino cuisine. It's our secret! Thanks for sharing, it was very tasty and easy to prepare.

  17. I'm anxiously awaiting for the calorie count on it too! They sound SO yummy and I can't wait to make them!

  18. I used this marinade on Tofu and it was simply delicious! I will never again use another marinade to prepare tofu. Thank you so much!

  19. Could this marinade be used on veggies or in a rice? Looking for ideas to spice up my carrot, squash, zuchinni mix that I usually serve with skewers.

  20. I was hoping to make these tonight but don't have any Sprite (or any soda for that matter) in my house. Any suggestions for a substitute?

  21. FYI… they work on a gas grill, but taste better on charcoal. Some filipinos add ketchup to the marinade too. But that may increase calories.

  22. Mine is marinating right now for tomorrow's night dinner. I just cleaned up from fixing the swedish meatballs. They were a total hit with my family. I love your website and have already grocery shopped for 6 meals!! I would love suggested sides to go along with the recipes…..like what you typically fix. Thanks!!

Most of the marinade gets tossed, but honestly I will have to remake them to give you the correct calories. As the weather warms I will add them to my list.

  24. I'm doing WW but my husband is just counting calories. How many calories are in the marinade? Thanks so much for this site! I have lost 9 lbs in 3 weeks and my husband has lost 8 lbs now, we love the recipes and it makes eating better so easy and flavorful. Thanks again!

  25. This looks really good! Can you please add the actual calories and other nutritional information you normally add? Thanks! Can't wait to try!

  26. I used this marinade to make chicken skewers, and they were a huge hit. The chicken was nice and tender. Served with grilled pineapple and roasted sweet potatoes. Thanks for another success!

  27. Hi Gina. I live in an apartment and don't have a grill. Any ideas on the best way to cook these? I have a George Forman.

  28. Made these last night and my youngest, who is the hardest to please, gave thumbs up! I've also made the asian glazed chicken, asian turkey meatballs and the carnitas, all with rave reviews! All are SO good!

My filipino friends grandmother used to make these and we were lucky enough to be invited over for dinner several times. They were so yummy. I have these marinating as we speak and it smells just like I remember. I used pork tenderloin cut very thinly which I will skewer onin a ribbon effect. I also threw in some chicken thighs as there was plenty of marinade. Now I have tomorrow's dinner ready too!

I just found your website and I am hooked. I'm curious if you started off by joining WW? Do you have a success weight loss story to inspire me? I need all the help I can get.

  31. What are some good sides to go with the skewers? I will be making them with steak and veggies this weekend. Need some ideas on what to pair with it. Thanks!

I actually plan on making them again this weekend to photograph them. You will love this!

  33. Thinking of using this marindade with pork tenderloins then grilling whole. Would like to see a photo of the skewers though.

  34. These were a big hit in my family! My 2-year-old NEVER eats meat and I think she ate about 3 skewers worth!!

  35. Is there information on the portion size? I see how many it makes and what the points are but what exactly is a portion?
