I love breakfast smoothies, a few of my favorites are Superfood PB Banana and Cocoa Smoothie, Strawberry Peanut Butter Swirl Smoothie Bowl and Skinny Green Tropical Smoothie.

If you’re wondering why I haven’t been around as much these past two weeks, I just spent an amazing two weeks on set in NYC for the Skinnytaste Cookbook photo shoot! It was a wonderful experience and I worked with a great group of inspiring people who truly love their job. I miss them already, but I’m also happy to get back into a normal routine and this smoothie was the perfect way to start my Monday morning!

I’m obsessed with sweetening my smoothies with dates. It’s the best way to sweeten a smoothie naturally without the need to add sugar plus it adds fiber. I just wish someone would invent a date paste, it would be so much easier to dissolve in the blender (does this exist?). Until then, I find it helpful to let the dates soak in a little boiling water to soften them before adding to my blender, and I let my blender run a little longer.

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk, Almond Breeze
  • 1 pitted date
  • 1 tbsp raw shelled hemp seeds, or seeds of your choice
  • 1/2 ripe medium banana
  • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds
  • 3/4 cup baby kale, or spinach
  • 1 cup ice


  • Combine all the ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth.

  2. You can make your own date paste. I saw this somewhere. Soak your date and process in food processor with a little water. Store in refrigerator. 😉

  3. There is actually a date paste that you can use. Middle Eastern stores sell it. 

  4. I discovered DATE PASTE when I did the Daniel Diet. I still use it like MAD! So easy. 8oz dates, one cup water (add if necessary to make sure dates are covered) bring to boil, lower heat and simmer for about 45 minutes until soft and mushy. Dump the dates, including the liquid, in your blender, zap, add a shake or two of cinnamon and put it in the fridge. You can add vanilla too. I sweeten my yogurt with it as well as using it as a dip for apples, spreading it on toast or biscuits, goes well with some cheeses and nuts. I’m considering switching it out for the pumpkin in your awesome skinny pumpkin granola. I never thought to put dates in a smoothie! Thanks for that and all your amazing recipes. You made cooking light fun and tasty again.

  25. Hi Gina, I tried using chia seeds in a smoothie recently and they just all sunk to the bottom but your picture looks like it is nicely blended. Should I prep the seeds in anyway before throwing them into the blender?

  26. About cleaning the Ninja..
    I was taught to put a squeeze of dish detergent and very hot water half way up with a towel over the lid and let it rip. It will clean those spots you can't get too. Just do it right after you use it.

  31. We have date paste readily available (sold in clear rectangular packages) in the oriental section of our supermarchés here in France…How much paste would be the approximate amount necessary for this recipe? Thank you for such a healthy mouth-watering brekkie!!!

    • Lucky! Just enough to sweeten it to your taste, maybe a teaspoon?

    • Hey Gina, we have dates paste "Molasses" here in the US. You can find it at any "Halal middle eastern grocery store". If you couldn't find it just let me know I'll send you some.

    • It's not supposed to have THC, but I would research this, don't want you to fail a test!

    • Hemp seeds, which are from the Industrial Hemp plant, contain less than .001% THC. You cannot fail a marijuana drug test from eating hemp seeds.

      Also, just 3 tbsp of hemp seeds contains 10 whopping grams of protein! You can use them anywhere seeds or nuts are used – in smoothies, salads, muffins, on cereal, yogurt – the sky's the limit!

  37. I NEVER thought I would spend so much money on an expensive blender. Let me tell you…IT IS WORTH IT! I have a blendtec and LOVE it. I am so glad I finally broke down an just bought it. Anxious to get some kale so I can make this smoothie!

  44. Hi. Do you need a special kind of blender to make your smoothies? The Vitamix is just way too expensive. I was looking at a Ninja Professional blender but am not sure it will do the job. Any advice?

    • I have a $20 blender I got on Amazon and it works great…I make smoothies every day.

    • I feel a good blender is worth the money if you make lots of smoothies. I realize they can be a bit pricey, I would just blend it longer until its smooth.

    • I have Ninja blender, and I would not recommend it. It's hard to clean because of the 3 rows of blades and the smoothies are not smooth. I would definitely save $ for a Vitamix.

    • This sounds delicious! Also-I have a Ninja blender that I use every morning to make smoothies, in addition to a dish-cloth, I use a toothbrush to clean the areas between the blades that I can't get to so well with the dish-cloth.

    • I make smoothies daily with a 'Nutribullet' … costs just about $100 at Kohls, Walmart, Target, wherever. I love it. It's small and doesn't take up much space and also very handy for other kitchen tasks like blending veggies into a cream based soup. To clean, just run blades under running water and put cup in dishwasher or wash by hand. Everything I blend comes out very smooth.

    • I have a Blendtec blender and I love, love, love it. I think it's better than a Vitamix — for one thing, it fits under my upper cabinets. So it sits on the counter always. Smoothie every morning! Easy, peasy!

    • I love my magic bullet! So fast and clean up if very easy!

    • I have a NutriBullet and agree with the comment above about it. It works awesome and breaks up shelled hemp seeds. That is why I kept mine!

    • I have the Ninja Professional (BL660 I believe). It came with the large container with the center blades which i can see being a pain to clean after smoothies BUT it also came with 2 single serve cups and an individual blade for them! Smoothies are a breeze and after I blend them I can just pop on my lid and go 🙂 I was skeptical at first too as I really wanted a Vitamix, but who's got $400-500 to drop on a blender?? I paid about $100 (Cdn) for my Ninja and it works amazing! It's like having a professional regular-sized blender and single-serve blender (nutribullet) in one…yet the price doesn't reflect that. They seem to go on sale all the time (at least in Canada)….definitely worth it

    • I have a Blendtec, and just got a Vitamix. I'll have to do the comparison to see if one is better.

    • You can get a refurbished Vitamix directly from Vitamix at a great price. I got mine that way and loooove it, that said, we have a magic bullet and before the vitamix it worked great for single servings. I am sure the nutribullet is even better. Main difference being the Vitamix an pulverize even the seeds of a strawberry and tons of frozen stuff at once, that wouldn't even fit in the bullet. I use the Vitamix every single day, so it was worth the investment.

    • The NutriBullet blows all blenders away; I use it daily and pack it w/organic greens, a bit of frozen fruit, vegan protein powder, chia seeds, hemp seeds, goji seeds, turmeric, cinnamon, cold filtered water and a bit of coconut water. Bed, Bath & Beyond sells the NutriBullet and then you can use your 20% off coupon to reduce the cost. For $100 before discounts, this item is well built and an amazing addition to a healthy eating regimen!!

    • We just bought a Blendtec 3 weeks ago. I am in love with that thing. I know it's a lot of money but the ease of it is just tremendous. We've made 60 smoothies since we've had it (it keeps count!). There's a smoothie button, and 45 seconds – and a lot of noise later – you have a perfect smoothie. My 12 year old who wouldn't touch breakfast has had a smoothie every single morning before school! Clean-up takes 5 seconds – rinse it out, or put a touch of soup and water in it, and pulse on machine,. REally wish I would have made the investment in our health much sooner. We bought ours at Costco with the twister jar and wild side jar for $350.

    • I have been making this smoothie in my nutri bullet before it was fashionable! I dont use the almond milk or the date. I love my nutri bullet and you can get it at Walmart for $99. It now comes in colors. I cant live without it or my smoothie every day. I am an ER nurse and I have long 12 hour shifts and when I cant make it to lunch, most days, I can drink this and grab some healthy snacks to help my feet full.

    • I love how vocal we all are about our blenders 🙂 Plus I'm in the market for a good one and these comments are helping. Any suggestions for a blender that handles greens like spinach well? Is there a blender that can actually grind and blend it to liquid?? I'm so tired of all the little bits of spinach in my cup, straw and teeth!

      • Megan – Regarding liquifying spinach/kale – I recently read that you should put the spinach/kale in your blender FIRST with just a little bit of water, and blend that until smooth. THEN add the rest of your ingredients. It really works!

    • I, too, am looking for a good smoothie blender. We just got turned on to "superfood smoothies" this past weekend, as my sister in law made one with goji berries, camu powder and hemp seeds (along with bananas, a little vanilla and berries!). She has a Vitamix because, well, she can easily afford it. I just can't see us spending that much for something to make smoothies in. I currently have a fairly cheap Black and Decker and it gets the job done. However, it isn't pulverizing something well and the smoothies seem gritty. I am thinking it might be the hemp seeds, so I want a blender which will pulverize even the tiniest bits.

      What I read about the Nurtibullet above sounds promising but I would want to make more than a single serving at a time for hubs and me. It hard to find unbiased reviews, although I did see some on CNET today. I may check into the refurbished Vitamix idea, too.

      I am hoping to get something soon, so I can explore the world of healthy smoothies!

    • My Nutribullet worked occasionally, and when it did I loved it. It started to open on the base, when it was running, spilling my stuff everywhere (even when it wasn't overloaded), and then it just ran itself right off something in the base, and got stuck. It was holding my drink hostage, and I couldn't get it out of there. Something had snapped off, holding it in place. So I don't recommend the Nutribullet.

    • I am brand new at smoothies. I've had a VitaMix for 15+ years and used it for all kinds of things.. Now that I am stuffing it with spinach, kale, chard, bananas, apples, orange, lemon, cilantro, celery, ginger, flax, hemp powder, digestive enzymes, psyllium husks, a few tablets, most of 40oz of water, etc.. I am having so much fun. A VitaMix has a good seal around the top because I end up stuffing too much in it.. It fills two large wide-mouth and one mid size mason jar. I would go to the VitaMix outlet if you need to watch your money..
