Quick Skillet Steak with Onions and Mushrooms

Meat lovers will LOVE this quick weeknight steak dish! Delicious served over rice or with a baked potato, sweet potato or turn them into Steak and Cheese Sandwiches.

Mushrooms and onions are the perfect compliment to steak, plus they add bulk, fiber and nutrients without added calories or fat. A great example of using steak as a condiment.

Originally when I made this steak dish, it was intended for my steak sandwich recipe, but since this is also so good over rice, I felt it deserved it’s own post. (Steak and Cheese Sandwiches here!) Serve this with a vegetable or starch and a salad and you have a complete meal!

Helpful Tip

Have all your vegetables sliced and ready before you start cooking, this takes only minutes to make once everything is prepped.

  1. You never say to remove either the steak or onions yet you say to add the cooked mushrooms to the steak and onions, confusing

  2. This was so good and flavorful! So simple to make and yet full of flavor. I paired it with your parmesan roasted green beans 🙂

  3. Quick, easy & very tasty !

  4. Suggest NOT cutting the raw meat into strips first. Its much easier to flip the larger pieces of meat to flash sear each side and then cut into strips after. realized this after trying it your way. Otherwise, good flavor.

  5. Delicious! I did add a touch of Dijon and a bit of coconut aminos – loved it!

  6. Can you replace beef for pork?

  7. Can you replace beef with pork?

  8. What color onion is best for this?

  9. I fixed this for dinner tonight and served it over brown rice. I also added broccoli and cooked it the same way as the mushroom and onions. I also served your roasted green beans with parmesan cheese. It was a huge success! My son and 2 grandsons were disappointed that there were not enough for seconds. I’ll correct that next time. I had this meat and didn’t have any ideas how I wanted to fix it. So I searched for the meat and your recipe came up. I’m going to start searching for other things as well. Thank you for a great dinner we all loved. Lucille

  10. Excellent, my husband gave two thumbs up! It was to cold and windy to grill our steaks so I tried to this recipe and served with Rosemary Rice Mix and it was amazing. Definitely making this again. I added a little Worcestershire Sauce at the end as my husband loves it and it turned out great.

  11. Simple, classic, delicious!!!

  12. Any recommendations for a salsa or spicy sauce that may go great with this recipe?

  13. I made this last night and it was very good. My husband and kids liked it too, which is a great accomplishment! In addition to the mushrooms and onions, I also added some peppers.

  14. I made this exactly as stated. I found my onions took a little longer to cook than the recipe stated. It was flavorful, but I felt like it could use a sauce like chimmichuri. It is a good base recipe.

  15. Loved this dish. Easy, flavorful, healthy

  16. Such a favorite in this house! Thank you for the recipe!

  17. Wondering if you meant this serves 2 instead of 4. With only 8 oz of meat, would only get 2 – 4oz servings of the meat. To get 4 servings, it would require 16 oz of meat. Just wondering as I prepared to make this. Looks delicious though.

    • You can if you wish.

      • Sorry- what confused me was when I saw the serving directions as 1/4 of the dish and in parentheses saw 4 oz. Thought that meant 4 oz of meat.  See now it means 4 oz of the recipe. Sorry- just trying to keep up with my SP for the meal. It made a large serving and would feed 4 persons easily but there would be 2 oz of meat in each serving: Tasted great! Thank you for your response. PB

      • So what is the answer? Recipe calls for 1/2 lb of meat (8oz) but serving size says 4 people at 4oz each. Is it supposed to be 1lb of beef at 4oz servings or 1/2lb of beef at 2oz each?

      • It is 1/4 of the recipe, totaling 4oz (meat and veggies) Sorry for the confusion!

  24. white or red onions ??? Kindly advise

  25. I just discovered Skinny taste and I’m so glad I did! I made the steak, onions and mushrooms and it was incredible. My six-year-old daughter said, it was “off the hook”! And if I were a chef she’d give me a 100%. It took less than 15 minutes to prepare and cook. I will definitely make this again and I’m eager to make another Skinny taste recipe!

  26. Green peppers would be a good addition to this. Sounds great. Will try it.

  27. I wonder, if you put this on a tortilla, would it be good with Bang Bang sauce on? I wish there was the calorie count for just that sauce all on it's own, it's amazing.

  28. if you truly hate mushrooms can you double up on the onions and cut out the olive oil?

  29. Plan to use green pepper instead of mushrooms! 🙂 Cant wait to try making this tonight!!

  30. this is so amazing. my boyfriend loved it! ^_^

  32. Just made this tonight….delicious….even my son's dog downstairs came up with the smell…only change I made was replacing mushrooms with spinach….placed over grain rice….so easy to make and fast….

  33. I made this last nite. DELICIOUS. I used this in a Whole Wheat Pita. I mixed a little bit of light sour cream with horseradish mustard & grated 1/2 a cucumber & some garlic powder for a lite sauce for a light Beef Gyro. For my husbands Gyro I added 2% shredded cheese since everything he eats has to have cheese on it. THANKS again Gina, for a great, lighter tastier meal.

  34. Put this concoction in a flour tortilla with some pepper jack cheese

  35. Loved this! I love it when the recipe doesn't require a ton of prep or cooking time and it was very tasty.

  36. Found this on Pinterest…. made it with some venison tenderloin. I just got everything off the stove and can't wait to dig in!! Looks and smells AMAZING!

  37. Am I reading those cooking times correctly? Only a few minutes total?

  38. Made this for dinner tonight. So easy and very tasty!

  39. I am going to make this tonight. I think I will reconstitute some dried porcini with fat free beef broth and add them in for a little more "bulk". I have made so many of your recipes, and have yet to find one that we don't love. I give out this site's address at WW meetings every week.

  40. Total hit with the boyfriend! I loved it as well. We had it as sandwhiches. And super super easy!

  41. I made this tonight with fresh steamed green beans and baby new potatoes. It was so fast and so so good!

  42. I made it yesterday!
But it wasn't very fast unless of my old electric cooker.

  43. This was delicious. I served it with grilled zucchini. My only criticism is that IT didn't make enough for the four of us. We couldn't get enough. Next time I will double the recipe. The points are so low I know I'll be able to do it. this was definitely a keeper. so fast and easy.

  44. Made this for phillys the other night and absolutely loved it! My husband liked it so much that I am making it again tonight to serve over rice. So glad I found your website, I am making one of your meals every night this week!

  45. I just made this for lunch! Excellent! Thanks so much, made it into sandwiches.

  46. Yes , it is 2pts + without the rice. Made this tonight after my ww meeting. All I have to say is awesome ! I bought steak you would use making fajitas. Thinly pre sliced used 2 steaks after weighing them out & have 2 steaks for next time. Defintely will be my standby for quick & low points dinner.

  47. thanks so much for this!!! your points calculation of 2pts is just the steak and stuff no rice right? thanks!

  48. Heck with round steak, I'm cutting up some ribeye and sprinkle some Daddy Hinkle seasoning.. First I'll marinate the steak in Daddy Hinkle marinade for about 15-30 mins.

  49. My question, would you suggest any kind of sauce for this? I feel it would work well with something to top it.

  50. Made this the other day… it was AMAZING! Delish!

  51. hey, i was wondering how you calculated the calories? i tried to calculate on my own and got 137 calories per serving instead of 95. thanks! love all of your recipes!

  52. This was amazing! Thanks so much! I did have to change to chicken because beef is expensive here in Japan.

  53. I finally returned to WW after 7 years and 3 kids… this time convinced the hubby to join. Day 2 and we are excited because of all the delicious looking recipes you have come up with! Tried the steak, mushrooms and onion tonight, YUM! My husband said way better than the junk we normally eat, and so much healthier! Thank you, thank you Gina for all your time and devotion… have to admit I am a little jealous of all of your talents. Can't wait to create some of the adorable gifts that you display so beautifully. I am hooked on this website!

  54. I am also a mushroom hater-lol! But I made this with an entire onion, and 8oz mixed red and green bell peppers instead of the mushrooms and it was so good and simple! I just had mine topped with Swiss cheese but my husband had his as the sandwich

  55. I'm making this for my husband's "welcome home " dinner… the only question I have is, do I use fresh or canned mushrooms? It looks like fresh from the picture, but I just want to be sure. Thanks, it looks amazing and I can't wait to try it 🙂

  56. I am making this tonight topped with a little Tzatziki sauce and served on a Flatout 90 cal. flatbread. I can't wait!

  57. Stumbled across this recipe because I bought what I thought was "cheaper" meat. Got 4 of these little steaks for $2.69. Just made this recipe for myself with two of the little steaks, half a small white onion, and two cremini mushrooms. One word: AMAZING. Thanks so much for the idea. I believe I'll be using the other two steaks for the same thing next week!!

  58. made this with flank steak. it was delicious.

  59. I found "thin cut beef round sandwich steaks" in the beef section at walmart. You just have to really look because there's not a whole lot of them. I picked through 5 or 6 packages.
Can't wait to make this tonight. (stomach is growling now lol!) My hubby is a meat & potatoes kind of guy, so he will love this I'm sure.

  60. If you have a hunter in the family you can substitute venison for the beef. you can triple your serving size and keep the same point count

  61. Instead of the oil with the mushrooms, use Worchestishire sauce (I just butchered that). It makes the dish even more flavorful!

  62. I made this tonight and it was absolutely delicious 😀

  63. how am i supposed to print this recipe?

  64. The beef steak I used was a little tough and chewy. Is this just me or is it normal? I may be slicing it wrong? I did season it and cook it first as opposed to slicing it THEN cooking it…

  65. I made this tonight almost exact. I had sirloin steak. I sliced it raw against the grain and it cooked perfectly. I used onions and mushrooms. I will add peppers next time too, I just didn't have any. I served it with brown rice. My kids ate the steak and rice, no veggies, but my hubby loved it!!!

  66. I made this tonight over brown rice and it was great. I added a cup of beef broth and reduced it for a little sauce…very, very good!

  67. I love this recipe! My husband thought it was really hearty and fatty…. little did he know it was WW!! I added green onions and zucchini. It was delicious! Then added some peppers to the leftovers for fajitas the next day! Amazing!

  68. I made this tonight and it was absolutely wonderful! Husband raved and raved. Thank you for taking the time to post these recipes!

  69. I made this tonight and added zucchini!!! Omg too die for with a hint of Mrs. Dash instead of salt and served over rice.!! thanks!!!

  70. wow this was amazing and so fast! also, very cheap…only $3 worth of meat for a lot of food. Gina, you should keep posting inexpensive, tasty recipes like this one…newly married and budget-conscious people like myself would be very grateful 🙂

  71. I am making this tomorrow…wow..another great one Gina. I am so in love with your blog. THANKS for all you do.

  72. You could but it has a lot more fat so the nutritional info would change.

  73. I'm making this today. Can I use skirt steak?

  74. I made this for dinner tonight! AMAZING! I served it over brown rice with Worcestershire sauce, fresh green beans tossed in sesame oil and toasted sesame seeds and fresh bread from the farmers market! DELICIOUS!!

  75. Im so excited to make this tonight!!! Looks great!

  76. This is the first recipe I have used from your site and may I say… I am blown away! So So So good! I will definitely be coming back for more. Have you ever thought about doing a cooking series of videos online? Like giving little tips and such?

  77. I have this on the stove cooking right now and it smells so good!!!

  78. This looks like it could be turned into stroganoff in no time flat!

  79. This was GREAT served over rice! My husband is very picky about the way this cut of meat is cooked but LOVED this. I used baby bella's for the mushrooms and even my 5 and 7 year olds enjoyed it. Keep the recipe's coming Gina!

  80. Just made this tonight!! It was so yummy, and easy to make! (I did trip the smoke detector, so next time, I'll try making it on lower heat)

  81. Christina- 4 oz includes onions and mushrooms, you'll notice this only uses 8 oz beef total for 4 servings.

So glad you all liked it, I can eat this every week!!

  82. i saw this today online and had to make it for dinner tonight… it was SOO delicious! i cant wait to have leftovers tomorrow as a steak sandwich!

  83. I made this for supper tonight. Unbelievably de-lish!!

  84. I am a little confused on the points+ because the last time I checked 4oz of steak was 4point+ am I calculating correctly?

  85. making this tonight! I love your recipes – I try one at least once a week. Thank you!

  86. Made this tonight! Delicious! Thanks again Gina for great, tasty recipes!!!

  87. This would be great over white or brown rice, whatever you prefer. Quinoa would be a nice side too.

Anon- hope you b.f. likes it!

  88. Oh boy Gina, this looks like a great one – my better half is a real meat eater; therefore there is a lot of 'heated discussion' over the meal choices – he would eat beef every night – so beef v. chicken is s hot topic; to not having to bbq steak on a regular basis would be a real treat – I'm sure that this is going to be a favourite; so many possibilities, i.e. peppers; fajitas; etc etc Thanks for all your encouragement and great recipes.

  89. Hi, Gina! I must say your recipes are always great. I have sandwich steak out for tonight & this looks really good. I think I'm going to make it. I have canned mushrooms instead of fresh, which I guess will work just as well.
Silly question. Did you use white or brown rice with it? Just wondering which would be better

  90. I have discovered a cut of beef called flat iron steak, kind of like skirt steak, but not as tough. Just marinate it in your favorite marinade, cook it any way you like, grill, stove top etc. It is really yummy! I fixed mine on my grill pan along with some thick slices of onion, really good! Thanks, Gina for all of your great recipes!

  91. Hi, this dish is a delight, I've tried, especially the onion rings are excellent, and that the dish my husband I did not cook.

  92. I'm so happy you all enjoyed it!

  93. I actually made this last night for dinner! (Only saw your recipe now, the following day). I added coriander and cumin spice to the meat to give it a more "Moroccan" flavor. Worked really well!

  94. Wanted spmething "special" for tomorrow. Gonna try this with the peppers as well and think it will be a fajita night. Gonna make your Salsa Picante Roja with it and have some light sour cream.. My mouth is watering already. Might add some Chipotle peppers as I LOVE them.

  95. I made this tonight and the boyfriend couldn't stop commenting about how delicious it was. And it was. Thank you Gina. I used eye round steak. Is that okay? I think that is the right cut of meat.

    Shannon NYC

  96. I just made this for my husband and I and it was WONDERFUL. He keeps talking about how yummy it was. I have made so many of your recipes and I just must say that I don't know what I would do without your blog. I love how you hardly ever use artificial ingredients. Thank you!!!

  97. I just did this tonight with a flat iron steak. Super tender and low fat. I make enough to throw on a salad the next day.

  98. Simple and delicious. My favorite!

  99. that looks great!

  100. You could probably also bulk this up with sliced zucchini or other summer squash instead of mushrooms. Sounds great!

  101. Round steak is pretty lean, they sell sandwich steaks that are sliced thin. Ask in the meat department. If not you could buy a London broil and slice it thin.

I used a regular yellow onion, nothing fancy! White would work too.

    Wendy, sounds yummy!

Lauren, this is a quick dinner everyone in my house loves! You can double this and have teak sandwiches for lunch the next day. Steak and cheese sandwich is posting tomorrow.

  102. I love how simple this! I feel like this is something that you know you have all the ingredients on hand and you could mix in tomatoes, green/red peppers, etc as well for a super quick dinner! Once again Gina comes through!

  103. This might be a silly question, but I don't cook with onions ever, what kind of onions do you use?

    • A sweet onion (like Visalia or Walla Walls) would be good. Or yellow. They have more natural sugar and carmelize nicely.

  104. I made something very similar this weekend with peppers instead of mushrooms. Great minds think alike. I made mine a wrap with low carb tortillas, swiss and horsey sauce.

  105. To people asking what this cut of meat is: if you can find "cube steak" or "minute steak" in your grocery store meat department, those are the same thing.

  106. I'm sure you could substitute lean sirloin without affecting the fat content too much

  107. it is round steak, cut thin. Round is a cut of beef

    • What's the difference between inside round and outside round though?
Can I use inside? And doesn't this type of steak need marinating to make it tender before cooking? Tnx

  108. What exactly is "thin cut beef round sandwich steaks"? What cut of meat is this? It looks delish and I can't wait to make!

  109. is there another name for this cut of meat? having trouble finding it in the beef section of the grocery store. thanks!

    • I would just use a nice flank steak or a round steak cut thinly across the grain. You could even use stew meat, however that might be a little tougher unless you marinate it first. A good marinade for this might be some Worcestershire Sauce. The acid helps to break down the meat a little and tenderizes it. It is also good when broiling or barbecuing.

  110. this looks perfect! mushrooms and onions are the best with steak

  111. Mushroom hater- Peppers always go great with steak and onions! Tomatoes too 🙂

  112. to the mushroom hater – lol just kidding! – I think asparagus maybe or even spinach would work well as a substitute

  113. This looks good. I think I would even consider throwing in a can of diced tomatoes.

  114. Yumm!! This looks so great! Definitely making it this week! Love how it's super easy and quick to make..I always love topping my steak with sauteed onions and I love mushrooms too so I have a feeling this is going to be a favorite recipe of mine! I can't wait to make it, thanks Gina!

  115. Anyone have a suggestion for a substitute if you don't like mushrooms? Be kind…I really wish I liked them! Life would be so much easier.

    • is it the flavor or texture you dont like about them? I didnt like white button mushrooms but the little brown ones I fell in love with, different flavor. Also large shitaki mushrooms taste more like beef. Anyway if you dont like mushrooms you can use zucchini or squash…what ever hearty veggie you do like

    • Mushrooms are tasteless to me, I am with you. How about red onions.

    • Zucchini seems to be a good substitute. Just over cook it.

  116. I'm gonna make this tonight!

  117. You can't go wrong with mushrooms, onions and steak! And you're right, the mushrooms add so much flavour without adding tons of extra calories or fat!
    – Brittany

  118. mmm … sounds delish! I bet it would be yummy fajita filling as well.

  119. The points are so low I think I'm making it again!

  120. YEAH!!! looks amazing, putting it on my list for this week!! you rock Gina!!
