Grilled Potatoes

Grilled Potatoes

When the weather gets hot in New York, I use my grill almost every night.  Grilling is usually my husband’s job, but I’ve been having fun exploring all the things you can make on the grill all on my own. It’s really not that hard! These grilled potato slices are like fries, only healthier!  They turn out crispy and delicious without deep frying or heating up the kitchen and you can even grill your turkey burgers or hot dogs with onions along side them. Serve them with some homemade ketchup and enjoy!! If you prefer a potato side dish to feed a crowd, try this red potato salad.

These crispy grilled potatoes are golden brown and delicious! An easy summer side dish to go along with anything you're grilling!

Why This Works!

  • No need to pre-cook or boil the potatoes. The whole thing is made right on the grill!
  • No need for aluminum foil, but if you want to make potatoes in foil try these lemon-parsley potato foil packets.

Ingredients:

  • Potatoes: Choose firm potato, such as russet or Idaho potatoes, so they taste like fries.
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt and Pepper (or use your favorite spices)

How to make easy grilled potato slices:

  1. Prepare the potatoes: Wash the potatoes thoroughly. There’s no need to peel them, but you can if you desire. Slice the potatoes into rounds, about 1/4 inch thick. Try to make the slices as uniform as possible to ensure even cooking. I like to use this crinkle cutter to get the ridges.
  2. Seasoning: Toss the potato slices in a large bowl with olive oil and your preferred seasonings. Here I kept it simple with salt and black pepper. You can try adding garlic powder, paprika, or herbs like rosemary or thyme.
  3. Preheating the grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. If you’re using a charcoal grill, wait until the coals are white and glowing before placing the potatoes on the grill.
  4. Grilling the potatoes: Reduce the heat to medium and oil the grates to prevent sticking. Place the seasoned potato slices directly on the grill grates. Cover and cook them for about 6 to 10 minutes, or until they develop a nice golden-brown color then flip and cook a few more minutes until they are tender when pierced with a fork. Flip them carefully using tongs to avoid breaking them. Remove them from the grill and transfer them to a serving platter.

What to Serve with Grilled Potatoes

These grilled potatoes are the perfect side dish with anything you’re grilling:

Variations:

  • Top then with shredded parmesan cheese, fresh herbs like fresh parsley or dill.
  • Yukon gold potatoes or red potatoes will also work.

Grilled Potatoes
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 15 minutes
Total: 25 minutes
Yield: 2 servings
Serving Size: 1 potato

Ingredients

  • 2 medium russet potatoes, washed, 13 oz total
  • 2 teaspoon olive oil
  • kosher sea salt and fresh cracked pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat grill to medium-high heat (an indoor grill would work too).
  • Cut potatoes into 1/4-inch thick slices. I used a crinkle cutter with ridges but straight cuts are fine.
  • Toss the potatoes with olive oil. Add salt, and pepper to your taste.
  • Reduce heat on the grill to medium and lay the potatoes slices straight onto the grill; close the lid.
  • Cook until the potatoes are golden on one side, about 6 to 10 minutes, making sure they don't burn and adjusting flame accordingly.
  • Turn and cook until tender inside when pierced with a fork, but slightly crisp and golden brown on the outside.
  • Remove from grill, and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

  1. It’s great to see someone posting a grilled potatoes recipe similar to the way my father and I have been doing it since the early 70s. I love the crinkle cut idea. Our recipe calls for a straight cut and (any) Italian salad dressing for basting. We serve them with sour cream. I believe our recipe originated from a old 60s Betty Crocker BBQ cookbook. A variation I started several years ago is to arrange the finished potatoes on a baking sheet, covering them with shredded cheddar cheese, and melt the cheese under a broiler. Top with bacon bits and chopped green onions – BBQ potato skins!

  2. These are wonderful!  So easy !!!  I never met a potato I did not like and now I don’t have to feel guilty about “fries”.

  4. Just made these…even my hubby (who's a picky eater) ate them. I got inspired and made grilled eggplant too (had one that was about to go bad). I paired with your Pepper Steak Stir Fry recipe…Delicious!

  5. Ohh these look so yum! My hubby loves french fries, but we all know ther are not the healthiest option! This looks like a great compromise 🙂 Thnaks for sharing!..

  6. These look great. I found a new Lawry's seasoned salt at the store that's chili/garlic seasoning. I'm going to try it with that.

  7. Gina, these were great! Grill was tied up with london broil, so I used the oven-35 min at 425 and flipped them halfway. Big hit! Thank you; new fan here!

  8. This is probably a silly question but is the serving size two slices from one potato or one whole potato since we're using 2 for the recipe?

  9. my boyfriend just took one off the grill and had me try one! heavenly!!! i put rosemary and garlic salt on them which added an amazing flavor! i cant wait until they are all done!! yumm!!

  10. I tried these potatoes 2 days ago and they were delish didnt have the fancy cutter so i just cut them into round circles but it worked 🙂

  11. Yummy! Made these tonight and sprinkled them with a little Italian seasoning! Amazing! Thanks Gina!

  12. I saw a different recipe for oven fries on here, I think it was here anyway. They looked like fresh fried, french fries. Does anyone have the recipe link? Thanks!

  13. I started doing this about 30 years ago. Sweet potatoes are good cut in quarters, like joes and brushed with a little olive oil and sprinkled with cinnamon.

We're currently traveling in an RV with no oven so EVERYTHING gets cooked on our Weber Q! I've found that putting a pizza stone on the Q and then "baking" whatever I'm going to bake on tinfoil works out great. I make potato slices this way often. I just mist them with olive oil using the misto and sprinkle with salt. I think I'll try your fried pickles on the grill. Spending the summer in North Dakota I'm having withdrawals of southern food!

    Carrie @ Season It Already!

This just seems like an obvious recipe, but I've never thought of doing it. I can't wait to make them with some garlic salt!

  16. After you cut the potatoes….if you soak them in cold water and pat them dry before you sprinkle with oil they will be crisper when you are finished cooking them. FYI

    1. I have heard also to do it with a half and half cold vinegar and water soak. I think it may liven up the flavor too and require less salt! I'll have to try this. Thanks for the reminder 🙂

I have made these in the oven but never on the grill. They look so perfectly wrinkled. Time to get a new wrinkle cutter since mine is so dull. I just made some homemade ketchup but it came out so runny. I am going to try yours since it looks much thicker.

  18. This is such a fantastic alternative to greasy, deep-fried fries! I love any kind of grilled veggies, especially potatoes. I'm going to have to get that crinkle knife…hands down.

  19. I have a grilling basket that I like to use to grill my veggies so they don't slide through the grates. Is that okay to use, or should the potatoes be directly on the grill?

  20. If you cut them up like regular french fries you can use the stir fry pans (deep pans with lots of holes in them) to cook up a batch quickly and keep them from falling into the bottom while cooking other things. We do these all summer long with some seasoning salt – YUM!

  21. I love, love, love grilled potatoes. I usually don't do anything nearly as fancy though! I love the krinkle cutter.

  22. Silly question, but when you toss them (in oil)..what is the best way? Do you prefer a bowl or a ziplock baggie? Thanks!

  23. I just have to add in here, I almost never cook inside in the summer. I have even baked cookies out on the grill. Just recently while camping I used the little Webber Q grill to bake cookies.

So curious about the cookie baking on the Weber Q. We're currently traveling in an RV with no oven. I've made pizza and even tater tots on the grill. But haven't had the nerve to try cookies yet.

  24. Yum! But I don't have a grill at all. And I try to stay away from white potatoes. So I'll have to try adapting this to sweet potatoes and a broiler… 😉

    1. We make sweet potato fries all the time. A bit of olive oil and some seasoning salt and they are fantastic! We use a really dark black pan and cook them in the oven in the winter and they turn out quite good as well!

  25. These look delicious, but I can already picture them getting horribly stuck to the grill and falling through the cracks.. I would highly suggest making these on an indoor grill with LOTS of non-stick spray.

    That looks amazing!
Do you think these will work on an indoor grill?
I live in an apartment 🙁

Thanks for the time on this! 🙂 I am making these on my Foreman grill tonight & didn't know how long they would take. Now I have a good idea! Thanks so much!!

These look delicious! I will definitely give them a try on the barbecue now that it's becoming too hot to cook indoors.

  29. I have been on a potato kick lately and these look delicious (and healthy!). And I want that knife! 🙂

  30. YUMMY!!! I am going to make these tonight with the Buffalo Turkey Burgers with/Blue Cheese Broccoli Slaw!!! Can't wait! Thank you so much!

Yum! Why haven't I thought of this?! Actually thinking of making turkey burgers tonight so this came at just the right time.

  32. We make these all of the time….and I love them! We sometimes just spray them with Pam too! But we don't have the fancy ridges! I love your recipes!

  33. So simple to make! I might add a little seasoned salt (minus the sugar) to add a little flavor. Then I won't need the ketchup!
