Shamrock Shake

Confession, I’ve never had a shamrock shake from McDonald’s. But I love the idea of a green minty milkshake for St Patrick’s Day, so I set out to make my own, with a bit less fat and calories.

You can also freeze this into popsicles similar to these Avocado Coconut Pops. If your looking for more St Patrick’s Day festive recipes, Chocolate Stout Cupcakes with Bailey’s Irish Cream Cheese Frosting and these adorable St Patty’s Rainbow Cake Pops are a perfect treat for the occasion.

Yesterday I drove to three McDonald’s just to test them out, but no one seemed to carry them in my area, which surprised me since the commercials seem to be running frequently on my TV.

No worries, I figured I know what mint ice cream should taste like, I’m sure it’s not much different.

A lot of thought was put in on how I would make this sweet and creamy like a real ice cream shake. But, I didn’t want to add artificial green food coloring. I knew I was going to start with Stonyfield’s 0% fat vanilla frozen yogurt, because I just love it. I’m always amazed at how much it tastes like full fat vanilla ice cream. I also knew I would add a little spearmint extract to give it that minty flavor. But for the coloring, I was stumped. Then it hit me… avocado’s are green, creamy and taste great in smoothies, so it was the perfect solution.

In fact, I may drizzle a little chocolate syrup on top next time I make this to get that mint chocolate chip experience. This is a fun dessert your kids I bet will enjoy!

  1. I just saw this recipe this year. Stonyfield no longer makes frozen yogurt. Anyone find a suitable substitute?

  2. Thank you for this recipe! My husband and I have been on a weight loss journey, but really wanted shamrock shakes. This hit the spot perfectly! And tastes just like the real thing!

  3. SO SO SOOOOO GOOD! My husband and I just made this and its AWESOME. Now I can have a healthier shamrock shake year round 😀

  4. Leftover ice cream and a work shut down has made me get creative and create 2 variations of this!
    1. Skip the mint and add chocolate syrup for a chocolate shake
    2. Skip mint and sub peanut butter for the avocado and add chocolate syrup for a chocolate peanut butter shake.
Neither are especially skinny, but super delicious! I’m sure the options are limitless with this recipe as a guide!

  5. This was such a perfect st pattys day dessert! Mint chocolate chip has always been my favorite ice cream, so I added a drizzle of chocolate syrup. All the stores I went to were wiped out of frozen yogurts (of all things!) so I went ahead and got the full fat ice cream. Totally worth the splurge! I can’t wait to try the nonfat yogurt version too

This is so much better than the McDonald’s recipe.  Recently I had a McDonald’s shamrock shake while on the road and all I tasted was chemicals.  From now it’s this recipe or bust!  Your brilliant Gina!

  7. Looks great…but my stomach has a problem with avocado (stupid stomach) – any ideas for substituting that? I could use banana for creaminess, but not the green.

  8. Can I leave out the avocado? I don't like them and I have a real good taste pallet,
and would be able to taste it. Would it still be a low calorie shake?

  9. I love shamrock shakes and a skinny one is even better 🙂 will go easy on my waist. Thanks for sharing this receipe

  10. My 17 yr old son just INHALED both servings! And he loved that it has avacado in it — He eats avacado just about every day!

  11. Wow. I saw this last year and meant to make it, but never did. As I sip mine now, I know it will be a treat I make for years to come. I used Herb Pharm peppermint spirits (and a little too much avocado) and it is AMAZING. Even my daughter loves it.
