Blueberry Banana Oatmeal Smoothie

I absolutely love healthy smoothies for a quick breakfast. In South America, it’s common to drink avena, a delicious oatmeal shake usually made with whole milk, cinnamon and sugar. My oldest daughter loves it! I’ve made it with pumpkin, but I was curious to see what would happen if I added blueberries and banana to make it a smoothie. The outcome was really good. I added some raw sugar to sweeten it. You can even use stevia or whatever sweetener you would normally use.

This is best if you make it and drink it right away. If you only need one serving, cook all the oatmeal in water as instructed below, but use only half of the cooked oatmeal in the blender and save the other half for the next day.

  1. The first time I made this, it wasn’t cold enough for my liking. The second time I made the oatmeal ahead of time and used a frozen banana. It was so much better.

    Hi Gina,
Do you add the warm oatmeal to the smoothie or let it cool?
    Thanks,
    Michelle

  3. Hi Gina! I LOVE your site and your cookbook. I’ve bought it for all the women in my family and they can’t stop raving about you! You are be best! Question about this recipe. If I want only one serving do I half all the ingredients or just the oatmeal?

    Thanks for everything!

      1. Great thank you!  One last question…can I use coconut palm sugar or stevia instead of raw sugar? I am trying to use the least amount of calories possible. Thanks again Gina!

  4. This is really good. I loved the original one you posted so much, it took me a while to make this one. My preschooler and toddler loved it, too. I used frozen blueberries because that's what I had and it turned out great. Thanks for another delicious recipe!

I made this today without cooking the oatmeal first and without the added sugar. I just used a whole banana instead of half to add a little extra sweetness. It was great! I will definitely make it again.

  6. Love the website I found this recipe on, Dysdine, com, but havent checked out the recipes so much yet. This particular recipe sounds pretty yummy actually (for my own tastebuds) but I'm wondering if it meets the level of pureed texture I, as a speech pathologist, recommend for my clients. I would feel hesitant to recommend this recipe because there is no clarification regarding the bits of blueberry or any additions should really be strained first before drinking, to make it truly a pureed texture. Some individuals can aspirate fine bits of particles from berry skins, in this case. Maybe I missed the detailed instructions (which should be explicit for a dysphagia recipe), but I'm thinking if a recipe is included on the website I found it on, the pureed texture should be stressed and absolutely clarified for those with dysphagia. Thanks, Erin

  7. It looks sooooo delicious!! I eat oatmeal with strawberries and blueberries every morning and tomorrow I'm going to try this version 🙂

I'm confused about serving it over ice. Use crushed ice? Picture looks like ice is mixed in the smoothee.

    1. I think she means use crushed ice in the blender with everything else but then pour the smoothie over ice to keep it cold while you drink it. It's better cold. That's how I prepare it and I really like it that way.

  9. I do not like oatmeal I never have. Is this really like eating regular oatmeal? I don't want to purchase oatmeal to only find out I will not like this.

  10. I don't like oatmeal, but I think oats in the smoothie sounds great. I need some variety for breakfast so I'll have to give this a try.

  11. I read this quickly yesterday and tried to wing it this morning. I used 1/4 c of uncooked oats. and a blender stick so it chopped up the oats very well. It was AWESOME and reminded me of the European Muesli and yogurt that I love. Thanks so much for my new favorite breakfast smoothie!

  12. I didn't have any blueberries so I exchanged dark red pitted cherry and added 2 tsp of honey, it was yummy making this again! Thank you.

  13. Is that the right ratio of water to oats? My box says 1 cup water per 1/2 cup oats and it's not thickening.

    1. Melty: I just made some oatmeal this morning with the quanties as you stated above and mine thickened up after cooking on the stove for about 5 minutes, on a simmer. Make sure you measured correctly…and don't rush it. Should take about 5 minutes…Stir once or twice too.

This looks delish. I use almond milk in all of my morning smoothies, so many health benefits and tastes better than milk!

    xx

  15. In Colombia we have a drink (similar to the mexican Horchata) called "Avena Helada" or something like "Iced Oats"…. it's made with oatmeal, milk, sugar and cinnamon and you just remind me of that! 🙂 looks yummy!

My Mom is Colombian, and makes it all the time. That's where the inspiration came from 🙂

  16. Looks yummy! I love your whisk, by the way — I just recently bought a bunch of brightly colored kitchen utensils to go with my brightly painted kitchen 🙂

  17. Yum! this is pretty much my breakfast every day. I use rice milk, no sugar, and put vanilla protein powder in.

I honestly didn't love this, just made it with dinner. I think it was the cooked oats that I didn't love, I felt like I was drinking oatmeal and something about that didn't sit well with me. However, my 6 year old loved it, go figure. It's so healthy so I'll definitely make it again for him. I think I might like it better if I didn't cook the oats. Love your recipes though! You are awesome!

I will chill it and have it over ice next time, I think that would make it better. Thanks again!

  19. Yummy, I just bought half a flat of blackberries at the gardeners market this weekend. They would be perfect in this. Thank you for this recipe.

    1. There's 15 calories in a teaspoon of sugar, and 3 teaspoons in a tablespoon. So 2 tablespoons of sugar is 90 calories

I've never tried oats in a smoothie, but this sounds so good and filling!

  21. I really love a blueberry banana oatmeal smoothie in the morning! It was fun to see how you make it compared with how I make mine! Thanks for the inspiration to add some cinnamon and sugar to mine – I'll have to try that out in the morning 🙂

I've never tried cooked oats in smoothie. Usually add it raw. Bet it adds a touch of creaminess! Yum!
