This slaw is super refreshing and takes less than 20 minutes to make. More easy side dishes using my vegetable spiralizer that I love are Raw Spiralized Beet and Mandarin Salad with Mint, Spiralized Veggie Gratin, and Spiralized Carrot Salad with lemon dijon dressing.

You don’t need a spiralizer to make this, you can of course core and cut the apples into thin strips. But, if you do have one, use it because it’s so much easier and quicker to do! No coring, and the seeds just pop out. I used the thicker blade on my Paderno Spiral Vegetable Slicer to make my apple zoodles, which are not just for zucchini! That’s why I love this tool so much. You can essentially spiralize any vegetable and use it to add into salads, bakes or simply sautee, and also as a pasta base, like my spiralized parsnip pasta with broccoli rabe and sausage!

Tips on how to spiralize an apple

I simply just remove the stems and place the thicker end in the little spokes for a better grip. Then spiralize and quickly add the dressing so the apples don’t brown (lemon juice works too).

Instructions

  • For the dressing, in a medium bowl, whisk together the olive oil, vinegar, poppy seeds, honey, salt and pepper.
  • Spiralize the apple using the larger noodle blade of the spiralizer. If the spiralizer stops turning, check to see if a seed got stuck in the blade.
  • Using scissors, cut the apple spirals into smaller 6- to 8-inch-long pieces.
  • Transfer to a large bowl along with the cabbage.
  • Pour dressing over slaw and stir to combine.
  • Eat right away or cover and place in the refrigerator to eat later.

  6. Just wondering if you prefer this spiralizer over the Inspiralizer you recommend in a different recipe. I want to get one and want the best option. By the way, I love all these recipes!! I don’t believe I’ve made one yet that we didn’t enjoy!

  7. I save time with the Paderno spiralizer by making a slit down the length of whatever I am using before turning. This keeps the spirals only one circumference in length. That way I don’t have to cut with scissors afterwards. Works fine with solid veggies, but would not work with hollow ones like a bell pepper. Really helps when sauteing the smaller noodle cuts. Otherwise the long noodles just end up in a twisted clump.

      I just made this using regular balsamic and it tastes great just not as pretty as picture as the dressing is dark. I also added a little more honey to knock it out of park.

  17. I can't wait to try this! I might make it for our Easter brunch. I know you use the recipe builder but 3 points seems like a lot here considering the olive oil and honey are the only foods that are not zero points foods. Thoughts? I guess it just is the same as the smoothie argument – counting the points vs not.

  18. At the top of the page, she gives some detailed information and tips regarding preparing this dish and using the Paderno Spiral Vegetable Slicer. She says to stem the apple, but it is not necessary to core it. Place the thicker end of the apple on the spokes for a better grip. The seeds should just pop out, but, if it jams up, check for a seed stuck in the blade. She, also, mentions that she used the thicker blade for this job. If you don't have a spiralizer, you can just slice the apple into very thin strips.

  19. You said to cut off the stem of the apple. Does that also mean to core the apple? Or leave the core in?

  20. To avoid having to snip the spiralized apple "noodles"make a vertical cut in the apple from the outside to the middle. As you spiralize the apple the "noodles" will break at the cut line and each piece will end up being equal to the circumference of the apple.

  22. Just got the 3 blade and I overall like it very much! However, I sometimes have trouble getting the suction cups to stick firmly to my counter. Is there a trick to that?

      It looks best for the first few hours, but I saved some overnight just to see and it was still fine, although the purple color from the cabbage bled a little.

    1. Gina! I bought the spiralizer attachment for the kitchen aid stand mixer and it is AMAZING!! You gotta try it.
