Air Fryer Bacon Wrapped Scallops

Scallops are so meaty and delicious, and take just minutes to cook which makes this a perfect fast weeknight dish. Making them in the air fryer, the scallops come out perfectly juicy and tender on the inside, with crisp golden bacon on the outside in under 10 minutes. I have been craving bacon wrapped scallops forever and finally decided to test them out in the air fryer. Playing around with them in my kitchen, I found partially cooking the bacon before wrapping the scallops gives you the best results for perfectly cooked scallops and crisp, bacon.

Helpful Cook Tips

  • For perfectly cooked scallops, be sure to pat the scallops dry. Place them between paper towels to get any moisture out.
  • One half slice of bacon fit perfectly around each scallop, you’ll need a toothpick to secure it.
  • Always turn your food halfway when air frying. The heating element is at the top, so turning it will cook food evenly on both sides.

Reasons to fall in love with air frying:

  • Food comes out so much crispier than it does in my oven.
  • It takes only three minutes to preheat, it doesn’t heat up the kitchen.
  • It’s safer and healthier than deep frying and it doesn’t smoke up the whole house.
  • The air fryer has now replaced my oven on most weekdays and nights, whether making hard boiled eggs, whipping up a side dish, heating up leftovers, or making dinner.

For crisp bacon without overcooking the scallops, I partially cook the bacon first before wrapping the scallops.

Ingredients

  • 16 large sea scallops, cleaned and pat dry with paper towels
  • 8 slices center cut bacon
  • 16 toothpicks
  • olive oil spray
  • freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat air fryer to 400F 3 minutes.
  • Place the bacon in the air fryer to partially cook 3 minutes, turning halfway. Remove and set on a paper towel to cool.
  • Remove any side muscles on the scallops. Pat the scallops dry with paper towels to remove any moisture.
  • Wrap each scallop in slice of bacon and secure it with a toothpick.
  • Spritz olive oil over scallops and season lightly with black pepper.
  • Arrange scallops in a single layer in the air fryer, cook, in batches 8 minutes turning halfway until scallop is tender and opaque and bacon is cooked through. Serve hot.

  1. It says to halve the bacon (on the website) which i did and the scallops i had were jumbo so the bacon was too small and I had to make whole slices. These turned out great following the recipe, scallops were perfectly done. I would probably cook the bacon a LITTLE longer as it wasn’t crispy even though the scallops were done.

  2. Great Recipe!

I used thin bacon to ensure it would be crispy. The temp and cooking time were perfect for my large scallops. I served the scallops over a mixed green salad with a homemade lemon maple syrup dressing.

  3. How can I make these without an air fryer?

  4. Does this work with turkey bacon?

  5. can I use frozen scallops? TIA

    • Did you try with frozen scallops? I am wondering if they will work as well.

      • I’m wondering the same thing, Has anyone else tried with frozen scallops?

      • I JUST tried this with the frozen ones from Costco. I cooked them at roughly 400 degrees for 7-10 minutes, checking in on them periodically. I flipped them halfway through and tossed a few back in for 2-3 minutes to get them as crispy as I wanted. They were pretty good! I lightly seasoned them with black pepper, but I wish I could think of a sauce to serve them with. Overall, I’d give them a 4/5

    • Sure just defrost them first

  6. AMAZING. My bacon slices were too small though after cutting in half, so next time I may just have some semi-double wrapped scallops or i’ll use the bits of bacon left over in a side dish.

  7. Oh my goodness these were delicious! Ours took a little longer, a total of 11 minutes but so delicious. The bacon and scallops were done perfectly. Love your recipes! We had this with asparagus (husband) and broccoli (me) and a combination of black rice and white basmati rice. So flavorful! Love your recipes and haven’t had a clinker yet!

  8. Thanks for the help. They were amazing.

  9. So cooking time is 10 min. per side for a total of 20 min.?

  10. Made this tonight with a side of air fryer asparagus. So delicious!!

  11. Do the scallops have to be defrosted?

  12. love this!

FYI your link to the seared scallops and parmesan risotto is incorrect.

  13. Can you cook on stove top pan?

  14. Can turkey bacon be used? They look delicious!

  15. Out. Of. This. World. My husband was like “this is so amazing but it doesn’t feel like it’s on plan.” Then I told him what a healthy dinner it was!!!

  16. If possible when you make an air fryer recipe could you include oven instructions for those of us that do not have an air fryer

    • Yes, I agree, that would be very helpful!

    • Oven set to broil. Let heat up while you wrap the scallops. Season if desired, but not necessary. Bacon and scallops have very strong nice flavors that interact well together. Half a piece of bacon per scallop, no more. Place spaced out in broiler pan. Aybe 1 to 2 inch apart. Need broiler pan with grill to handle all the liquid that comes out. Cook for 12 to 14 min. Have used this basic recipe my whole life. Scallops should be opaque or solid white when finished. Every broiler different so chop one in half to make sure cooked. Enjoy!

  17. HI Gina,

Do you cut the bacon in half before cooking or after the 3 minutes of cooking in the air fryer order to use the 8 slices for the 16 scallops?

  18. Gina, this recipe looks delicious but I don’t have an air fryer. Could I do this in the oven too? What changes to the recipe would I need to make? Thanks 🙂 I love all of your recipes and I am sure this one is going to be great as well!

  19. what is the carb count? I don’t see it listed ?

  20. Do you have instructions for baking or broiling?
