Last summer I made my own homemade ketchup which turned out so GOOD, I made it again this year… with a twist! I added some chipotle paste to give it some heat which you can adjust to your liking. This goes so great with turkey burgers or grilled sweet potato fries!

Finally someone came up with a chipotle paste in a tube, perfect since I never use the whole can. The brand is Olo’s which I found on Amazon, but of course canned chipotle sauce will work fine here, you’ll have to mince the chipotles.

This is so EASY to make, just put a few ingredients in the sauce pan and let it simmer for 20 minutes. If you are planning on grilling this weekend and you like things a little spicy, give this a try!

What is Chipotle?

A chipotle is a ripe chile pepper originating from Mexico that is smoked and dried and ground. You can usually find this canned as a sauce like chipotles in adobo or as a paste. It’s perfect when you want to add a hot smokey flavor to any dish.

I am making a variant of this today, but this recipe was my template. I used 10oz tomato paste, and adjusted the ingredients by 1/3 to compensate. I used brown sugar instead of honey, apple cider vinegar instead of white, and pureed chipotle instead of paste. It's simmering now, and it smells so good. Going to dip homemade sweet potato fries tonight!

  2. How much does this make? I'm thinking of doing a batch to put in homemade Christmas gift baskets

The INGREDIENTS measurments would put this at about 1 cup and 6 oz. Just shy of a
      1 and a 1/2 cups.

  3. Yes, I would think this can be canned, but this only makes a small quantity. One might want to double it to justify bringing out the canning equipment. When canning tomatoes you have to add lemon juice to increase the acidity to prevent botulism. With all the vinegar acidity should not be a problem.

  4. I also buy the whole can of chipotles, and place each pepper on waxed paper on a cookie sheet, and freeze whole. Once frozen I pop them into a freezer bag and pull out as needed! This sounds really good!

  5. Hi! I'm new(er) to cooking… I know. Silly, right? Anyway, quick question. How long would this recipe last in the refrigerator? Thanks!

Hey there, love your blog! I saw you're going to be attending the Big Summer Potluck this July. It will be my first time attending and I'm looking forward to meeting you hopefully! xo

  7. Sounds yummy. I wonder if one has chipotle pepper seasoning, http://www.penzeys.com/cgi-bin/penzeys/p-penzeyschipotle.html, how much one would add….

  8. Can't wait to try this recipe. I just wanted to mention that I regularly buy canned chipotles in adobo sauce, in an 8oz can. What I always do is empty the whole can into the food processor and puree it. I then divvy it into FOUR 2oz condiment cups with lids (I find them at GFS – Gordon Food Service). I keep one of these cups in the fridge, then the others go in a Ziploc baggie in the freezer for later use. I mix the pureed chipotles into spicy brown mustard, into my egg salad, chicken salad, and spicy chipotle cole slaw. This method of pureeing/storing the chipotles works great for me.

    1. Oh my gosh- GREAT idea! I always use one or two and then ending wasting the rest without meaning to! Thanks for the tip, Laura!
